Paleomagnetic properties of sediment cores were examined to reconstruct paleodepositional conditions in the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) manganese nodule area, located in the northeastern equatorial Pacific. The KODOS sediments studied have a stable remanent magnetization with both normal and reversed polarities, which are well correlated with the geomagnetic polarity timescale for the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. Average sedimentation rates were 1.56 and 0.88 mm/kiloyear for the Pleistocene and late Pliocene, respectively. Clay mineralogy and scanning electron microscope analyses of the sediments indicate that terrestrial material was transported to the deep-sea floor during these times. The variations of sedimentation rates with age may be explained by the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciation and subsequent climatic deterioration during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. For the Pleistocene, an increasing sedimentation rate implies that input of terrestrial materials was high, and also a high input of biogenic materials was detected as a result of increased primary production in the surface water. The down-core variations in paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic properties of the KODOS sediments were affected by dissolution processes in an oxic depositional regime. As shown by magnetic intensity and hysteresis parameters, the high natural remanent magnetization (NRM) stability in the upper, yellowish brown layers indicates that the magnetic carrier was in pseudo-single domain states. In the lower, dark brown sediments, only coarse magnetic grains survived dissolution and the NRM was carried by more abundant, multi-domain grains of low magnetic stability. The down-core variation of magnetic properties suggests that the KODOS sediments were subjected to dissolution processes resulting in a loss of the more stable components of the magnetic fraction with increasing core depth.

The age of mineralization, its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit, its capacity for sustainable extraction and, ultimately, its grade and tonnage, are key aspects in the economic viability of volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits (Ditchburn et al, 2004). Radiometric dating methods applied at GNS Science have been recently refined with the purpose of efficiently determining the ages of seafloor VMS mineralization along active intraoceanic arcs. These developments include: determining the longevity of seafloor hydrothermal systems, details of individual chimney and massive sulfide mound growth, and insights into deep-seated processes, such as the transfer of elements from magmas to their overlying hydrothermal systems. In our pursuit to better understand seafloor hydrothermal systems along intraoceanic arcs, we have thus far compiled age information for three volcanic centres of the Kermadec arc (South Pacific) and one of the Mariana arc (NW Pacific).

A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

The discovery of rich alluvial diamond deposits on Namibia?s Skeleton Coast in 1908 began a period of intense exploration and mining off the coastal sand; and shallow surf zones. In the mid-60s a Texas entrepreneur, Sam Rollins took the search to the seafloor. The inhospitable conditions encountered made the early going difficult. After a slow start, the past 10 years have seen much progress in geologist?s understanding of the deposition mechanics and the use of sophisticated geo-physical and sampling techniques to aid in the discovery of economic deposits. Diamondfields, in a joint venture with BHP and Benguela Concessions, began an exploration program in 1994 for sea-bed diamonds off the Port of Luderitz in Namibia. This program has progressed to a mine development program with the potential of creating a 500,000 carat per year operation. The mining technologies being considered include state-of-the-art, remotely operated sea-bed crawlers and high volume dredges feeding to semi-mobile processing platforms. The company's objective is to use the best proven technology to create an environmentally responsible operation with the lowest fixed operating costs and the longest and safest weather operating window of any offshore operator working Africa's diamond coast.

Polymetallic nodule mining presents mankind with a unique opportunity to advance the world?s sustainable development aspirations, particularly given the ultimate beneficiaries from polymetallic nodule mining will be the billions of people around the world that require greater access to more affordable minerals for their social and economic development. This paper discusses the importance of polymetallic nodule mining in the context of sustainable development and forecasted growth trends, supply and demand dynamics, the decreasing grade and quality of terrestrial mineral resources, and the Green Economy, as well as in light of a comparative analysis that demonstrates polymetallic nodule mining offers a socially and environmentally advantageous alternative to terrestrial mining.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. This study examines the possible relationships between compositional variability in non-hydrothermal manganese nodules and large-scale environmental parameters. In the central SW Pacific (145-180° W and 20-O° S) the level of primary productivity, the rates and proportions of carbonate, silica and organic matter supply to the sediments, and the position of the seafloor relative to the Calcium Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) appear to directly influence nodule composition. Four zones of nodule composition are apparent. These zones correlate fairly well with the level of primary productivity in surface waters, as estimated by satellite-based measurement of chlorophyll content. The observed correlations between surface productivity and nodule composition are consistent with the contention that the dominant source of several transition metals in these deposits (i.e , Mn, Ni, Cu. and Zn) is provided by removal of fine-grained particulate matter from the water column by biological means. Subsequent decay of organic matter in sediments augments the content of these metals in the nodules through oxic and sub-oxic diagenesis. The opposite behavior of Fe and Co content may in part result from mineralogical and dilution effects.

The world?s data available on near sea-bottom gas-hydrate accumulation and deep-water fluid-discharge areas are presented in this paper. Gas-hydrate accumulation associated with fluid discharge (mud volcanoes, gas seeps, gas-saturated water seeps) is characterized by the following. First, the largest hydrate accumulations in sediments are located at shallow subbottom depths and have well-defined limits, especially in the upper subbottom part. Second, gas-hydrate formation in fluid-discharge areas is a present-day process, with the global occurrence of deep-water fluid-discharge areas numbering up to about ten thousand, and with all the seep areas being favorable for the formation of near-sea-bottom gas-hydrate accumulation. Third and principal, gas resources in the hydrates can be considered as renewable. Estimates of possible gas volume in single accumulations of hydrates and the global budget, as well as possible methods of gas utilization from such gas-hydrate accumulations are discussed in the paper.

Many attempts have been made to design and build an AUV that is small, meets the sensing objectives and is cost effective. Many inventors have already designed smaller vehicles but the problem observed is an increased vehicle instability resulting in instrument instability where data gathered is not trustworthy. Additional problems include instrument weight to vehicle weight ratios and the lack of space for power storage and electrical components. The UFOceanic seeks to remedy these concerns by employing a completely different design and propulsion system. Still in the design stage ? now with a mock-up unit for testing, the results are encouraging. We have chosen a very low voltage embedded systems design using multiple PIC processors and fuzzy logic programming. We are designing the craft to rotate for stability and to provide friction reduction to minimize the need for instrument stability compensation and propulsion power. Additionally, we are looking and experimenting with a number of power plant drive systems including flywheels, GNP (plasma), fuel cells and more conventional systems. We of course plan for the UFOceanic to run for months at a time supported by a self-charging system.

A very extensive spatial and temporal database on benthic infauna and associated sediment metals has been collected for Island Copper Mine on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada from 1969 (pre-discharge) to 1998 (3 years post-discharge). The tailings deposited as organically impoverished, copper-rich, clays, silts and sands distributed according to particle size, bottom turbidity currents and strong, vertically mixed tidal currents. In addition, a large deposition of coarser waste rock along the north shore of Rupert Inlet contributed substantial material in the shallower, near-field area.

The paper concerns with some questions of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) control system design, which allows a motion at rough undersea terrain. The AUV advantages reveal itself completely during exploration of such objects as seamounts and reefs area. These objects are characterized by steep slopes (30 degrees and above) and chaotic situated obstacles (rock debris, pinnacles, escarpments). Uses of other technical facilities for operating in such formations are difficult, dangerous or impossible. These regions take an interest due to the presence of iron-manganese crusts. Modern AUV can estimate density of mineral by means of still camera or video recorder. For this reason the vehicle has to move with the distance of 3-5 meters from seabed. Under such conditions micro- and mesorelief presents a considerable danger for AUV. The AUV can bypass underwater obstacles in the various ways. However, in any case AUV motion will be characterized by intensive maneuvering on various speeds (from 0 up to 1.5 m/s), circular change of tractive force vector and, hence, a circular flow about the hull. So, AUV is equipped with the propulsion system, which provides free modes of motion.

The Zacarias gold-silver-barite deposit appears to be a Precambrian analogue of present-day exhalative deposits on the sea floor. Geochemical, stratigraphic and structural studies of the latter can be useful in elucidating the ore environment at Zacarias, thereby assisting exploration. The Zacarias mine is about 300 km north of Brasilia, within the Goiás Massif, Brazil. It is the southernmost of three auriferous quartzite occurrences along 1 km of a northeasterly striking amphibolite. Zacarias and its neighboring smaller deposit to the north, the Central Pit, contained a premining ore reserve of 650,000 tons at 4.4 g/t gold, 48 g/t silver, and about 20% barite. Gold mineralization is hosted by concordant quartzite strata also containing layered barite, pyrite, barium-mica, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, magnetite, sulfosalts, free gold, and electrum. The host amphibolite is intercalated with barren mica-quartz-chlorite-pyrite schists that are more voluminous in the footwall and are associated with the ore horizons. Above the amphibolite in the hangingwall lies a thin graphitic shale, then a feldspathic arenite. The strata and regional foliation strike northeast and dip 42° northwest. Crenulation and small-scale folds plunge 30 to 40° to the west.

The Chatham Rise is a submarine topographic feature lying off the east coast of New Zealand between the South Island and the Chatham Islands and within New Zealand?s jurisdiction. The Chatham Rise hosts economically significant deposits of rock phosphate and other potentially valuable minerals. The deposits comprise nodules lying on, or just below the surface of the seabed in shallow waters. Rock phosphate is an essential ingredient of fertilizer and can be applied directly to pasture. There is a realistic opportunity the phosphate deposits could supply New Zealand?s agricultural requirements for an estimated 30-year period at current rates of consumption.

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where the southeast and northeast trade winds converge, is the effective climatological barrier that separates the southern and northern hemispheres in terms of dust budget. Asian and N. American dusts dominate in the Pacific north of the ITCZ, while Central and S. American dust prevails south of the ITCZ. In order to understand the nature of latitudinal and depth-related variations of mineral composition in terms of position relative to the ITCZ, deep-sea core sediments were collected from 9°N to 17°N at a 2° intervals along the 131.5°W meridian and analyzed for mineral composition. The amount of illite in surface sediments decreases gradually from 65% at 17°N to 31% at 9°N. In contrast, smectite increases from 11% to 56% southward. The observed mineralogical variation toward the ITCZ is attributed to the increased supply of volcaniclastic material transported via the southeast trade winds from the Central and South America source regions. Smectite-illite transition, a phenomenon that the amount of smectite increases over illite, occurs at around 10°N, the northern margin of the ITCZ. This result indicates that the change in latitudinal position of the ITCZ in the geological past could be recorded by the smectite-illite transition in deep-sea cores. The cores studied show down-core variation of mineral composition from illite-rich at the surface to a smectite-rich clay suit at depths, similar to the latitudinal variation. The smectite-illite transitions observed in these cores are likely the records of changes in latitudinal position of the ITCZ. The depth and age of the smectite-illite transition is getting shallower and younger towards the equator, implying that the ITCZ was located farther north during late Tertiary and has shifted southward to the present position of 5°N~10°N.

A program of surveying and studying the surficial sediments of northern Juan de Fuca Strait was undertaken between 1988 and 199 1. Detrital sediments were mapped from the intertidal zone down to 100 m depth along the slopes of a series of shallow coastal marine terraces. The sand heavy mineral content was examined over this region and sediment geochemistry and assays were performed on selected samples both offshore and from beaches along the coast. The coastline of southwestern Vancouver Island has numerous streams, with a history of small Au placer extraction, which empty into the strait to the south. Only very minor evidence of this was seen in values from isolated locales. However, one beach presented a remarkably different mineralogy and geochemistry from the remainder of the coastline. From the beach to 800 meters offshore heavy mineral contents were greatly elevated and Ti values were as high as 1.4% of the sand fraction. Minerals were relatively fresh and angular, with mineral percents distinctly different than those found elsewhere along this coastline. No stream of substantial size crosses this largely sandy-gravel beach. A series of studies identified the source of this small marine placer as having its origins n the tailings from a submarine pipe broken short in the next bay. A Cu-Au mine 1.5 km upstream, closed by the mid 1970's, had processed its ore underground and piped the crushed tailings to the submarine discharge pipe. The crushed material has been transported and concentrated with the longshore current and been sorted by strong coastal swells. Ilmenite/titanomagnetite from the homblendized basalt of the mine is the source of the Ti enrichment.

The occurrences of polymetallic minerals within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of many Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have been confirmed through marine scientific researches and seabed minerals exploration in the last forty years, and are increasingly being recognized by nations as a future potential source of revenue and economic development. For many of the smaller PICs, this may represent the only exploitable natural resource sector apart from fish. SOPAC (then under the CCOP/SOPAC) was actively involved with deep sea mineral exploration in many countries in the South Pacific between the 1970s and early 1980s that led to the discovery of a number of seabed mineral occurrences within the EEZs of these countries. In collaboration with SOPAC, a number of multinational consortia and national agencies were involved in this early stage of seabed mineral prospecting in the region. This was followed by a twenty-year (1985-2005) marine mineral prospecting in the Pacific through the collaborative effort of the Government of Japan and SOPAC as well as the Ridge 2000 program. Other mineral prospecting and marine scientific research initiatives have been conducted in recent years and the most notable one is the Nautilus Minerals advanced exploration in the Manus Basin in PNG. Based on the results of previous exploration, a number of countries in the region with moderate to high deep sea mineral resources potential are identified. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits have been confirmed in PNG, Tonga and Fiji while the Cook Islands and Kiribati have high manganese nodule resources potential in addition to significant occurrences of Cobalt-rich Crust within the EEZs of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. Despite the recent surge in deep sea minerals interest and activity around the Pacific, specific policy, legislation and regulations necessary for the governance of deep sea mineral resources are lacking. Also lacking is the specific technical and human resources capacity essential to ensure that PICs are able to effectively manage these seabed resources. Consequently, SOPAC under the EU funded Deep-Sea Minerals (DSM) Project will work with Pacific ACP States to develop a regional regulatory framework from which they can develop their national frameworks for the sustainable management of their marine mineral resources. The work is of critical importance if PICs are to have effective environmental, fiscal and social management instruments in place for the exploration and exploitation of deep sea minerals that could support economic growth within the region as a whole.

Under the provisions of the U.N. Law of the Sea Convention Ireland is likely to have mineral rights to an area of continental shelf some six times its present land area. Apart from the major potential hydrocarbon basins which are currently the focus of active commercial exploration, little is known about the mineral resources of this vast area. In recent years a variety of mineral resources however have been identified from the coastal region. These include Sand and Gravel aggregates, Calcaraeous Algae (Lithothamnion), Heavy Mineral Sands and Coal deposits. The potential also exists in the coastal zone for buried placer deposits and base metal deposits. Several million cubic metres of gravel and hundreds of millions of cubic metres of sand have been identified by the Geological Survey of Irelands (G.S.I) Marine Unit off the east coast. The greater part of these deposits lies within the 10 metre depth contour and are easily recoverable. Irish aggregate needs at present are well supplied by onshore Pleistocene glacial deposits. Commercial interest in offshore deposits is in supplying coastal areas which are locally poor in aggregate and major coastal construction works. The possibility of supplying the large British and Continental European Market nearby also exists.

New Zealand lies astride a convergent plate boundary that extends north-eastwards from the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) to Tonga. This boundary is marked by the Kermadec arc, c. 1200 km of which falls within New Zealand’s EEZ, and which is host to numerous volcanic edifices both on the arc and in a zone immediately behind the arc to the west. In 1999, thirteen volcanic centres in the southern 260 km of the arc were surveyed for their hydrothermal plumes with seven of them discharging vent fluids into the surrounding ocean. Three of the seven volcanic centres have had mineralised rocks recovered from them during dredging and submersible operations, namely Brothers, Rumble II West and Clark. Presentday plume data combined with mineralogical evidence indicate that the vent sites at Rumble II West and Clark are waning, although the presence of Cu-rich sulphides in samples recovered from Rumble II West suggest there may be a massive sulphide (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ba ± Au) deposit located within the caldera. Brothers volcanic centre is host to the largest polymetallic mineral deposit discovered along the Kermadec arc and has numerous, up to 7 m tall chimneys within a c. 600 x 200 m area located on its NW caldera wall. Geochemical data indicate that concentrations of base metals are variable and depend critically on sample type. When combined with mineralogical and plume data, this indicates addition of a magmatic fluid component to the vent fluids.

Within New Zealand?s extended EEZ there exists a vast submarine hydrothermal mineral resource associated with the Kermadec intra-oceanic arc. Along this arc more than thirty submarine volcanoes have been explored by GNS-lead researchers and, of these, c. 60% are known to be hydrothermally active and a site of active seafloor mineralisation. Assessment of whether this mineralisation is economically viable in terms of grade and tonnage is now underway. A key aspect of these investigations is determining the age of the mineralization which will have a direct bearing on its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit and, ultimately, its capacity for sustainable extraction. Intact barite-rich ?black-smoker? chimneys similar to that depicted here (86 cm long) have been recovered from Brothers volcano in the southern part of the arc. These and other hydrothermal deposits provide evidence of active volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) mineralisation along the arc, the age of which can be determined from the disequilibrium between isotopes within the thorium or uranium decay chains. A chimney from Mariana arc has also been dated using these radiometric methods. The principle dating technique for chimneys up to 15,000 years old uses the decrease in 226Ra/Ba due to radioactive decay after the VMS was deposited. An initial ratio is obtained from chimneys that are proven to be less than 100 years old and this involves dating with 210Pb, 228Ra and 228Th that have short half-lives compared with 226Ra.
