Deep sea mining of manganese nodules actually will have an environmental impact to the seafloor and to the water column. However, we are far from being able to predict the possible consequences. Therefore, in 1992 environmental studies were conducted with the R/V Sonne in a manganese nodule field of the Peru Basin. The bathymetry of the seafloor was mapped using the hydrosweep system and the distribution and type of sediments were investigated by the parasound system and by collecting surface samples and sediment cores. Deep towing of a side-scan sonar system revealed a Mn encrustation of sediments and a nodule coverage of variable density. Along the tracks of a photo sledge a great variability of bottom fauna and of bioturbation was observed. Bottom-mechanical investigations of surface-near sediments were completed on board. Additionally water samples were collected near the sea floor to determine character and amount of dissolved and suspended particles. Manganese nodules and crusts were collected at 80 locations. In many aspects the nodules differ from those of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone: Big cauliflower-shaped nodules with growth rates up to 160 mm/ Ma may reach a maximum size of 24 cm in diameter, maximum abundance may be 44 kg/m2, the mean size of buried nodules is greater than that of surface nodules. The reason for that difference is due to the relatively high bioproductivity in surface waters and to a Mn redox boundary in the sediment column 10 cm below the seafloor. Histograms of nodules showing the distribution of size and growth type clearly indicate that the growth history is different for basins, slopes and tops of seamounts and ridges. Nodules with diameters >7 cm show mainly diagenetic and to a minor degree hydrogenetic growth. Smaller nodules of the same assemblage are composed mainly of hydrogenetically grown Mn oxide. The optimum diagenetic growth occurs within the sediment immediately above the Mn redox boundary, a level which is not reached by the small nodules.

A program of surveying and studying the surficial sediments of northern Juan de Fuca Strait was undertaken between 1988 and 199 1. Detrital sediments were mapped from the intertidal zone down to 100 m depth along the slopes of a series of shallow coastal marine terraces. The sand heavy mineral content was examined over this region and sediment geochemistry and assays were performed on selected samples both offshore and from beaches along the coast. The coastline of southwestern Vancouver Island has numerous streams, with a history of small Au placer extraction, which empty into the strait to the south. Only very minor evidence of this was seen in values from isolated locales. However, one beach presented a remarkably different mineralogy and geochemistry from the remainder of the coastline. From the beach to 800 meters offshore heavy mineral contents were greatly elevated and Ti values were as high as 1.4% of the sand fraction. Minerals were relatively fresh and angular, with mineral percents distinctly different than those found elsewhere along this coastline. No stream of substantial size crosses this largely sandy-gravel beach. A series of studies identified the source of this small marine placer as having its origins n the tailings from a submarine pipe broken short in the next bay. A Cu-Au mine 1.5 km upstream, closed by the mid 1970's, had processed its ore underground and piped the crushed tailings to the submarine discharge pipe. The crushed material has been transported and concentrated with the longshore current and been sorted by strong coastal swells. Ilmenite/titanomagnetite from the homblendized basalt of the mine is the source of the Ti enrichment.

In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

China, India and South Korea are three developing/newly industrialized countries that can show a very positive economic development in latter years. Moreover the three countries also feature amongst the countries with the highest level of activity in deep seabed mining today. India was the first country to achieve Pioneer Investor status in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The country has carried out comprehensive exploitation of nodule deposits in the Central Indian Basin. India has an active programme for development of mining technology and internationally, India is probably the leading nation today as far as processing technology is concerned. China for its part has established a central coordination unit for its deep seabed involvement and its exploration and technology development is already well underway. South Korea has applied for Pioneer Investor status and much indicates that it will be allocated its own minesite in the autumn of 1994. The three countries are in mutual contact in the area of the Law of the Sea. Korea contacted both China and India when drawing up its application for pioneer investor status and allocation of minesite. However, no cooperation exists between the three regarding for example technology development, economic analysis or in studies of the environmental consequences. The main purpose of this paper is to focus on why and how the three countries would be well advised to cooperate in the above areas. Economic, technological and organizational aspects all point in that direction.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

Submarine hydrothermal mineralization occurs in at least three locations along the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Weak hydrothermal discharges occur off Kos and Nisseros at the eastern end of the arc and off Milos at the western end. In both cases the hydrothermal solutions are rich in iron and manganese and are precipitating iron oxides variably enriched in minor elements. This points to the likely presence of sulphide minerals at shallow depth below the sea floor at these locations. By contrast, at Santorini, in the centre of the arc, the hydrothermal discharges are much stronger and rate of deposition of the hydrothermal minerals much greater. Indeed, in one of the two hydrothermally active embayments off Santorini (Nea Kameni) hydrothermal deposits are accumulating up to five times as fast as in the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these deposits have been accumulating for about 100 years. In the other embayment off Santorini (Palaea Kameni), hydrothermal deposition has taken place over a longer period (more than 1,000 years) but the deposits are not so hydrothermally enriched due to the simultaneous deposition of biogenic silica and detrital mineral with the hydrothermal deposits. The observed pattern of increasing intensity of submarine hydrother¬mal activity from the extremities of the arc towards its centre argues for additional hydrothermal mineralization on poorly explored areas of the sea floor between Milos and Santorini and between Kos and Santorini.

An unusual combination of ten new, deep (-100 m) coreholes and an extensive high-resolution seismic reflection network enables us to produce a detailed study of the phosphorite resources in the Tertiary strata of the Georgia continental shelf. These strata are mixtures of a terrigenous facies, notably quartz and clay along with minor amounts of other aluminosilicate minerals, and of a marine facies, notably phosphorite and carbonate. Phosphatic sediments occur throughout the cores, however the richest phosphorite beds are in the middle Miocene (Serravallian) sediment, where they constitute up to 70 percent of the sediment mass. Major zones of phosphate enrichment occur chiefly at major unconformity boundaries (tops of Oligocene, lower and middle Miocene, upper Miocene, and lower and upper Pliocene) and at prominent intrastratal reflectors representing minor unconformities within units. Phosphorite co-occurs with the clay minerals, especially palygorskite, but correlates inversely with carbonate and detrital quartz, indicating a low-energy depositional environment. The clay minerals present in these strata, which have an environmental consequence on recovery of the phosphorite, are varying concentrations of smectite, kaolinite, mica, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Phosphatic resources have been determined within only the Miocene strata. Sediment volume for this unit to the 100 m isobath on the continental shelf has been established using the high-resolution seismic reflection network that has been calibrated using the deep coreholes. Phosphorite grains larger than 0.1 mm average about 40% of the sediment. In turn, most of the remainder of the sediment in this size range is quartz, which is separable from phosphate grains using conventional flotation techniques. Our estimate is that 300 Gt of phosphorite lie within the Miocene strata of the Georgia continental shelf.

In October-November 1993, the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Victoria jointly carried out reconnaissance surveys at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland. Pine Cove is the site of a multi-year study examining the environmental impact of a shallow water small-scale marine placer gold mining operation. The reconnaissance survey data collected will be used to develop a multi-year environmental effects monitoring (EEM) program for Pine Cove, Baie Verte, but more generally an EEM protocol for shallow water small-scale marine placer mining, which meets the requirements of Canadian government regula¬tors such as Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Pine Cove mining operation is currently scheduled for the summer of 1995, and will use two mining methods: a hydraulic suction dredge in shallow water (<10 meters) operated by a scuba diver, and a hydraulically actuated clamshell dredge in deeper water (-30 m). A centrifugal concentrator will be used to extract the heavy minerals from the mined marine sediments, and the tailings will be returned to the sea floor via a suspended discharge pipe. The reconnaissance work at Pine Cove included geophysical, geochemical, oceanographic and biologi¬cal surveys, providing data which will enable prediction of the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mining operation. In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

Many of the Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits of the Bathurst area in northern New Brunswick, Canada, are intimately associated with laterally continuous iron formation (IF) (Figure 1). This IF is a fossil laminated, exhalative, chemical sediment. Together, the IF and the Brunswick #12, Brunswick #6, and Austin Brook deposits (rightmost discontinuous horizon on Figure 1) are collectively referred to as the "Brunswick Belt". To date we have only studied the Brunswick Belt and have not examined the horizon along which the QSR, CNE and Flat Landing Brook deposits lie. The Bathurst area is underlain by the Tetagouche Group (Figure 2), a Cambro(?)-Ordovician sequence of metasedimentary and bimodal metavolcanic rocks that was intruded by mafic to felsic plutons and subsequently deformed during the Taconic Orogeny. The stratigraphic sequence consists of shales and greywackes that are overlain by carbonaceous shales and felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks; these are in turn overlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The massive sulfide deposits and IF occur within the upper portions of the felsic volcanic rocks in close association with carbnaceous metasedimentary footwall rocks (Figure 2).

The Zacarias gold-silver-barite deposit appears to be a Precambrian analogue of present-day exhalative deposits on the sea floor. Geochemical, stratigraphic and structural studies of the latter can be useful in elucidating the ore environment at Zacarias, thereby assisting exploration. The Zacarias mine is about 300 km north of Brasilia, within the Goiás Massif, Brazil. It is the southernmost of three auriferous quartzite occurrences along 1 km of a northeasterly striking amphibolite. Zacarias and its neighboring smaller deposit to the north, the Central Pit, contained a premining ore reserve of 650,000 tons at 4.4 g/t gold, 48 g/t silver, and about 20% barite. Gold mineralization is hosted by concordant quartzite strata also containing layered barite, pyrite, barium-mica, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, magnetite, sulfosalts, free gold, and electrum. The host amphibolite is intercalated with barren mica-quartz-chlorite-pyrite schists that are more voluminous in the footwall and are associated with the ore horizons. Above the amphibolite in the hangingwall lies a thin graphitic shale, then a feldspathic arenite. The strata and regional foliation strike northeast and dip 42° northwest. Crenulation and small-scale folds plunge 30 to 40° to the west.

Massive sulfides discovered in 1991 and further explored in 1993 in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, north of Papua New Guinea, represent one of the few modem seafloor occurrences known to he associated solely with highly siliceous volcanic rocks. As such they are very close analogs of ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) ore deposits, and hence an excellent natural laboratory for developing new approaches for land-based VMS exploration. The Manus Basin lies between the active New Britain subduction zone and volcanic arc to its south and the opposed inactive Manus subduction trench to its north. It is being extended in a complex pattern of short neovolcanic zones and oblique transform faults. In its western sector, relatively mature back-arc spreading has created predominantly basaltic segments with characteristics and mineralization generally similar to those of mid- ocean ridges. At its far east, however, the basin is distinctly immature. The East Manus Volcanic Zone lies between two members of the Manus transform set, and is an en-echelon series of neovolcanic edifices constructed on extensionally thinned island arc crust formed during the earlier manus subduction episode. Individual edifices range from predominantly basaltic to predominantly dacitic in composition. Two of the edifices are known to be hydrothermally active, and a particulate plume with unknown source occurs in the seawater column above a third.

The Urals massive sulfide deposits are concentrated in Silurian -Devonian fold belt extending for 1500 km with length from 50 to 150 km. By paleodynamic reconstmction it is established that they were formed in submarine parts of island arcs, in inter arc and back arc basins, marginal seas. When "black smokers" were found in rift zones of present oceans, problem searching their analogues in the Urals Paleozoic complexes was arisen. For solving this problem and demonstration of seafloor origin of massive sulfide many quarries and drill cores were carefully sketched and studied. Particular attention was given to correlation between ores and synchronous sedimentary rocks and fossils. Various laboratory methods were used for comparing sulfides from ore hills with ore-clastic sulfides.

In the western Woodlark Basin, propagation of seafloor spreading is occurring directly into the continental crust of Papua new Guinea. The spreading is not strictly in a back-arc tectonic setting, rather it appears associated with microplate rotations related to the complex convergence of the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southeastern Pacific region. Volcanic rocks along the western Woodlark spreading axis range from normal mid- ocean ridge basalts to basaltic andesites with back-arc geochemical affinities. Rare peralkaline rhyolites also occur. Hydrothermal deposits occur at a basaltic andesite volcano located on the neovolcanic zone near its westernmost propagating tip. Franklin Seamount is a 250m-high cone constructed largely of pillow lavas and talus which sits astride a 450m-high ridge of similar lavas oriented subnormal to the spreading direction. At its crest, 2150m below sea level, there is a 100m-deep caldera.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. Much advance has been made in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in India. But the same amount of success could not be achieved in the case of other offshore minerals which are amenable for mining. However, employing present technology, there should not be any difficulty in successful exploitation with minimum environmental hazards. A demonstration is provided by considering the conditions prevailing in the Kerala offshore (southwest coast of India) scenario of monazite, ilmenite, phosphatic mud and calcareous deposits. Mud banks are unique phenomenon of the Kerala coast during monsoon season. Acting as barriers to waves, mud banks protect portions of the beaches from being eroded and trap sediments from either side facilitating growth of adjacent beach. The easy minable possibilities of the phosphatic mud during non-monsoon season with less pollution hazards and dumping back the waste material after processing for phosphate at the breaker zones to reduce the erosional effects on the coast make the exploitation economic and ecofriendly unlike the benefication of the lowgrade phosphate ores on land on a comparatively larger area and subsequent crushing, transport and resulting pollution.

The Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) has started the project in the fiscal year of 1989 under the administration of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry &apos;(MITI). The purpose of this study is to assess the impact on the ocean environment caused by manganese nodules mining. Summary of research and survey of MMAJ is as follows: 1. Evaluation of environment impact The aim of this study is to assess impact for ocean environment by manganese nodules mining. It is studied by using three-dimensional hydrodynamic prediction model and by carrying out cultural experiment of surface fauna with adding deepsea water and sediment. Development of hydrodynamic prediction model for discharged water at ocean surface has started in 1989. On board cultural experiment was carried out in the Japanese application area in the eastern Pacific in May 1991 and in May 1992.

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides. Plumes are subject to bottom currents which push them in preferred directions, just like smoke plumes in the atmosphere are subject to the vagaries of wind direction.
