"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. "In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

The quality of final concentrate in froth flotation circuits is largely dictated by the correct implementation of the froth washing operation in flotation cleaning stages, which are commonly installed in column flotation cells. In flotation plants, this aspect has been largely overlooked and the froth washing is restricted to the use of perforated piping through which process water flows producing a similar effect to that observed in "fountains": jet created with low energy crosses the froth phase washing out entrained particles as well as particles weakly attached to bubbles. The aim of this research study is to assess the efficiency of traditional froth washing systems theoretically and experimentally. A theoretical model was implemented using Fluent® software where a jet of variable speed was introduced in a continuous soft matter phase with physical properties similar to those observed in a froth phase in wet and dry conditions. In addition, a simple experimental protocol was designed to validate the model. It was found that the water process jet-like flow influences the behavior of 2 to 3 times the equivalent volume in the froth phase. Such influence zone is dramatically reduced as the froth phase becomes drier. These results were confirmed by the experimental findings indicating that a better froth washing technologies must be assessed and implemented. Some aspects of the ideal froth washing system are derived and discussed in details.

"Flotation is a complex process with many factors that influence the performance of a cell. This paper examines the impact of several key variables on the performance of flotation cells. The study makes use of a simulator for the froth phase of the flotation vessel, as the main purpose of this study is to separate the impact of different variables from one another.In experiments it is very difficult to separate the effect of variables from one another as a change in a singe input parameter, such as air rate, invariably also affects many of the other key variables, such as bubble size and bubble bursting rates. This interaction between variables makes it very hard to experimentally separate the impact of, for instance, the air rate from that of bubble size or bursting rate. In the simulator, though, it easy to make independent changes to these variables.In order to achieve this a base case simulation that is typical of many of the rougher cells found in sulphide flotation circuits was carried out. Four key variables, air rate, incoming bubble size, surface bubble size and the fraction of the bubbles flowing out of the cell unburst, were varied in order to obtain the system’s response.The most significant results were obtained when the bubble size was varied. An increase in the incoming bubble size has the effect of reducing the pulp zone recovery, but increases the froth zone recovery. If it were possible to vary the incoming bubble size without influencing the overflowing bubble size, the impact of the change would be unclear because of these two competing effects. The effect of a change in the overflowing bubble size has an opposite effect on the froth recovery, with larger bubbles resulting in lower froth recoveries."

In a small-scale mining in Brazil?s northeast, scheelite were exploited since 1940?s using a traditional gravity concentration flowchart (composed by jigs and shacking tables) that operates with low efficient for fine particles. Tailing of this plant was submitted to chemical, mineralogical and size characterization. Results pointed 50% smaller than 74µm with a grade of 0.11% WO3. The particle?s size is an important operational variable to heighten recuperation by shacking tables. Tests using Falcon SB40 centrifuge concentrators and shacking table were realized, optimizing their operational variables. Based on the tests results a new flowchart was proposed for concentrating and tailings recovery.

"This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. There are four types of copper ore formations in the Küre region. The so called disseminated ore contains 60-70% siliceous minerals of which Cu content is around 0.5%. The remaining three ore types in the region are generally named “massive ores”. The massive ores may assay up to 15% Cu and the major gangue mineral is pyrite associated with relatively little amount of silica. The main copper mineral in all formations is chalcopyrite that is generally finely disseminated in pyrite therefore satisfactory liberation requires ultrafine grinding especially in the case of the massive ores.A blend of these ores, containing 1.7% Cu on average, is fed to the Küre Copper Concentrator whose capacity is 1.2 million tons of ore annually. Unfortunately, today the plant operates below its designed capacity treating around 550,000 tons of ore per year. The design of Küre Copper Plant was undertaken by the Outokumpu Company of Finland. The operation of the plant is almost automatically controlled and the feed, the concentrate and the tailings are assayed for copper by on-line XRF analysers. The particle size analysers are also connected to the grinding circuit. The feed material is ground almost below 50 µm and the flotation is conducted around pH 11.2 using Hostaflot X-231 (a trade mark of Hoechst) as the collector. Apart from the rougher cells, there are four cleaning stages after which the final concentrate is produced. A very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu leading to copper losses around 20% in the tailings that contains 0.3% copper."

"It is difficult separating fluorite from Ca, Ba, Si intergrowth minerals than simple from Si, using common reagents such as combination of oleic acid or paraffin soap and water glass, but the finest quality fluorite concentrate whose grade is over 96%F must be required in chemical plant.This paper studies the flotation process of native fluorite from calcite, barite and silicate minerals whose flotation properties is similar to fluorite, using new effective collector H602 and new depressor S602 that is cheaper in cost, and describes the flotation properties. In order to determine optimum flotation separation condition, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents on flotation were investigated and the flotation result was provided by oleic acid collector and the results of collector H602 were compared with those of collector oleic acid in the test. The test result of ore samples shows that at moderate pulp pH values (10.5-11.5) and other moderate technical conditions, the fluorite mineral can be obtained by new reagents and the rational reagents combination. The conclusion is 98%F of fluorite concentrate can be obtained, using the combination of H602 and S602 and only 5 steps in techniques. The paper discusses the mechanism of the flotation separation of fluorite mineral from intergrowth minerals."

"Accurate assessment of the liberation state of crushed ore particles is important for efficient mineral processing. In general, the liberation state is assessed by two-dimensional (2D) measurement of polished ore sample sections. However, this 2D measurement inevitably suffers from overestimation of the degree of liberation, known as stereological bias. This arises from the fact that biphase particle sections of which only one phase happens to have been cut are indistinguishable from liberated particles. To date, several stereological correction methods have been proposed, but their applicability for various types of particles has not yet been sufficiently examined, and this tends to undermine their practicality. We have addressed this problem using a numerical-analytical approach in which various types of biphase particles are modeled, and the 2D sectional information is compared with actual three-dimensional (3D) information. Through simulations, we revealed a general relationship between the internal mineral structure of particles and the stereological bias. Finally, we have developed a unique stereological correction method in which the texture (a 2D pattern characteristic) of particle sections is used to estimate the internal structure of particles, and thereby the stereological bias. KEYWORDS Mineral liberation, stereological bias, texture analysis INTRODUCTION Mineral liberation assessment of 2D particle sections inevitably suffers from stereological bias; that is, overestimation of the degree of liberation. Stereological bias is caused by the fact that a composite particle can be misidentified as a liberated particle when only one phase happens to have been cut in sectional measurement. Stereological bias has attracted attention since Gaudin pointed out its importance in 1939 (Gaudin, 1939). Several attempts have been made to measure the 3D liberation state directly, avoiding the bias, using X-ray computed tomography (Gay and Morrison, 2006; Lin and Miller, 1996; Miller et al., 2003; Miller et al., 2009; Reyes et al., 2017; Videla et al., 2007). These have provided useful information through laboratory testing, but further technical refinement is necessary for practical usage, to overcome the technique’s limitations in terms of resolution, assessment of minerals of similar density, and speed. Therefore, for practical purposes, detailed information regarding mineral phase geometry is obtained by sectional analysis, using automated scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX)-based analysis (e.g., with a mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) (Fandrich et al., 2007; Sandmann, 2015)); and the development of an effective method of stereological correction, which predicts the relevant bias and transforms the measurable 2D degree of liberation into its 3D counterpart, is an important research aim."

"Froth structure and stability are known to play an important role in determining flotation recovery and selectivity. An industrial sampling campaign was performed to develop a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability and the role played by the resulting stability on flotation performance.Froth stability was estimated as the fraction of bubbles bursting on the surface of the froth through image analysis and the solids loading on the bubbles at the top surface. The image processing was performed using the Smartfroth software on the top surface of the froth. The system gives measurements of bubble size distribution, average bubble size and froth velocity. The froth velocity was used to estimate the volume of bubbles overflowing the weir yielding to the fraction of air overflowing the cell. This measurement is the complement of the rate of bubble bursting on the top surface. Also samples of the lamellae were taken by touching the top surface of the bubbles with a glass slide. Then, the amount of solids and liquid per unit area in the bubble lamellae was estimated gravimetrically. Both measurements were used to establish stability criteria.It was generally found that high air flowrates resulted in a drop of froth stability showed by a drop in the fraction of air overflowing and a decrease in the solids loading and simultaneously produced low copper recoveries and low concentrate grades. Deep froths only allowed a small fraction of air to overflow and consequently produced low recoveries. An increase to high frother dosage did not result in an improved fraction of air overflowing, hence producing low recoveries. Likewise, low frother addition only allows low recoveries because the resulting unstable froth cannot support itself. Low aeration was found to be preferential as it allowed high particle loading, therefore high bubble stabilisation, and low gangue entrainment, resulting in the highest flotation performance."

"Froth flotation has a long history of success for the recovery and concentration of a wide variety of minerals of commercial interest. Both the art and science of flotation have progressed greatly, and as our knowledge has increased so has our ability to improve mineral separations and recoveries.One area of interest in recent years has been the flotation of refractory gold ores to recover the goldbearing sulfides. In many instances, the use of conventional air flotation to concentrate these values has achieved only limited success. However, as a result of intensive research, Newmont Mining has expanded the boundaries of flotation, and it can now be used to successfully treat many gold-bearing sulfide ores as well as platinum and palladium ores. This has been achieved through the use of the patented N2TEC technology, which utilizes nitrogen as an inert gas in the flotation process."

"The Olserum deposit located in Sweden hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes over 0.6 % TREO, exhibiting a relatively high proportion of HREE. Beneficiation of a composite drill core sample was studied in the flowsheet of magnetic separation of magnetite followed by REE minerals flotation. Primary testwork was performed to select an effective REE mineral collector and then the parameters of grinding size, collector and depressant dosages, slurry pH and density, conditioning time and temperature, and flotation time were tested for optimization of REE flotation. The studies of process mineralogy showed that the REE-bearing minerals monazite, xenotime and apatite were successfully enriched from the concentrations of 0.6%, 0.31% and 2.6% in the feed to those of 17.0%, 8.9% and 65.0% in the concentrate with the recoveries of 79.0%, 81.3% and 71.0%, respectively. INTRODUCTION The Olserum deposit located in Sweden comprises lower grade placer material with higher grade apatite-magnetite veins and hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes at 0.6% TREO, with 34% of that being HREO (EURARE, 2017). The mineralization was studied by Andersson et al. (2018). At early stage, high-temperature REE is characterized by abundant monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) coexisting with fluorapatite and subordinate amounts of (Y,REE,U,Fe)-(Nb,Ta) oxides. During a subsequent stage, allanite-(Ce) and ferriallanite-(Ce) formed locally, partly resulting from the breakdown of primary monazite-(Ce). Alteration of allanite-(Ce) or ferriallanite-(Ce) to bastnäsite-(Ce) and minor synchysite-(Ce) at lower temperatures represents the latest stage of REE mineral formation. The mineralogy and beneficiation were firstly studied by GTK Mintec in the EURARE project for a composite drill core sample. The Olserum is considerably smaller than the Norra Kärr deposit. However, REE are hosted by xenotime and monazite, both of which have well established processing pathways, and meanwhile, the Olserum has a high contribution of the high value critical REE (dysprosium (Dy), yttrium (Y), neodymium (Nd) and terbium (Tb)), which provide a unique advantage for its exploration (Tasman Metals Ltd., 2013). In this paper, flotation of the REE minerals in the Olserum ore was studied."

This paper describes a new magnetic separator integrating dynamic permanent magnetic force, gravity and flow dynamics to enhance the quality of the iron concentration. This equipment can increase the grade of concentrate by controlling the formation of magnetic agglomerations to reject most gangue. Test results indicates that the compound force field separator can be applied in improving the quality of iron concentrate and has a wide range of potential market applications. Principles of ecologically friendly geo-technologies construction are formulated on the basis of the works of the leading scientists in the field of rational processing of mineral resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of these concepts is a new direction in rotational disintegration of mineral and technogenic raw material with the purpose of effective subsequent enrichment. A large amount of practical experience has been accumulated in the industry on selective destruction by application of vibrational method on initial material with consideration of its physical-mechanical properties and mineral structure. This method is successfully realised in a conic inertial pulverisation devices constructed by Mekhanobr Institute (St.-Petersburg). A new construction of conical-inertial pulverisation with a modification of disintegration force has been developed recently at Mekhanobr Institute. It allows, in some cases, to increase selectivity of subdivision and to avoid over-disintegration. Advantages of “wet” subdivision methods in conic inertial disintegration devices are proved. The efficiency of such subdivision can be increased due to rational use of the phenomenon of a dislocation-dynamic diffusion. Its advantage is proved by the effect on disintegrated material by frequency-modulated variable electrical fields of low power. It was shown in industrial conditions, that the productivity of the spherical mill can be increased by 10 %, and that it also prevents ecologically harmful surface active substances (SAS) in milling zone and it reduces the dust content in the air. The techniques of tentative estimation of efficiency of various proceedings technogenic materials and their classification are created. The scientific fundaments of rational, ecologically friendly technology of processing and regeneration of various kinds of technogenic raw material are developed. A number of effective technologies on processing of wastes is developed and inculcated in concentration factories and metallurgical factories.

This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a generic global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. As a point of departure we propose that it is not possible to place metals in the context of the sustainable development of society without paying due regard to the entire metals value chain. Thus, the starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions around the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions. The aim of these case studies is to highlight to the minerals processing and metals refining industries their potential role in a more sustainable global society.

"Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels."

"The uranium deposit Curilo located in Western Bulgaria for a long period of time was a site of intensive mining activities including both the open-pit and underground mining techniques as well as in situ leaching of uranium. The ore was rich in pyrite and, apart from uranium, contained some non-ferrous metals. The mining operations in the deposit were ended in 1990 but since that time the deposit is a permanent source of acid drainage waters. The generation of these waters is connected mainly with the oxidation of pyrite and other sulphide minerals by the indigenous acidophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria.Laboratory and pilot-scale studies revealed that an efficient clean-up of the above-mentioned waters was achieved by means of passive systems of the wetland type. In 2001 a wetland was constructed in the deposit to treat a portion of the acid drainage waters which were discharged to a small ravine. This ravine reaches into the Teina, a small river that is a tributary of the upper reaches of the Iskar river.The wetland was constructed in the ravine and its bottom was located on intrusive rocks with a very low permeability. The rocks were covered by a 30 – 50 cm layer consisting of a mixture of soil, plant compost and crushed limestone. The wetland was characterized by an abundant water and emergent vegetation and a diverse microflora. Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia and Phragmites australis were the prevalent plant species in the wetland but species of the genera Juncus, Eleocharis, Carex and Poa as well as different algae were also well present.The acid drainage waters treated by the wetland had a pH in the range of about 2.5 – 4.1 and contained uranium, radium, some heavy metals (iron, manganese, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The watercourse through the wetland covered a distance of about 0.2 – 1.0 l/s."

In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect. Theoretical study of the behavior of grinding medium presented by TBP (tetraballpebs) was conducted by computer modeling of the position of grinding medium at different speeds and different drum fill factor. For the modeling were used known equations of motion derived for the ball load. Algorithm was created by SolidWorks software, allowing determination of center of gravity of the load in the mill and energy for grinding. These results were compared with similar results obtained by ball grinding medium. The capabilities of both grinding media are demonstrated by graphics under the following conditions: 1.Equal dimensions of the experimental model of the mill; 2.Equal mass of the grinding loads; 3.Comparison of grinding bodies with the same number, mass and density. Vanadium-titanium magnetite from Panzhihua was crushed with open and closed circuit process by high pressure grinding roller (HPGR). The particle size characteristics of the crushed product were analyzed and the micro-cracks generated by HPGR during the crushing process were studied. The results showed that, in crushed products, the reduction ratio increases and the size distribution becomes more uniform with increasing of the pressure on roller?s surfaces. The fine fraction content of crushing products from -3.2 mm classification closed-circuit by HPGR increases obviously compared with that by Jaw Crusher and particle size distribution is more uniform. Large amount of intra-crystalline cracks and cleavage cracks are generated in vanadium-titanium magnetite crushed by HPGR, which makes the specific surface area larger and Bond grinding work index (objective particle size is 0.074 mm) decreased by 14.05% than that by Jaw Crusher. And the liberation degree of monomer of the product crushed by HPGR increased compared with that by Jaw Crusher with the similar fineness of grinding.
