The aim of this paper is to evaluate the suitability of a coal sample from the mine Jaworzno (Poland)- locality for bacterial leaching. Laboratory research used a pure bacterial culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The results showed that bacterial leaching was effective, with a one month leaching time, when 65% of total sulphur and 85% of pyritic sulphur was leached. The paper describes changes to the pyrite during and after bacterial leaching.

Co-precipitation of dilute toxic anions with ferrihydrite is an important removal mechanism in wastewater treatment system. Although, numerous qualitative studies have been published on removal characteristic from wastewater of dilute anions by co-precipitation treatment, detail mechanism or quantitative characteristic is not well understood. This paper discussed the co-precipitation mechanism of As(V) and Cr(VI) with ferrihydrite by comparative experiments between co-precipitation and simple adsorption. In this study, co-precipitation experiments and simple adsorption ones were distinguished closely. In the former, precipitation of hydroxides and adsorption of anions develop simultaneously, but in the latter, anions adsorb onto prepared hydroxides. Although high affinity anions for hydroxides (e.g. As(V) for ferrihydrite) showed quantitative difference of removal ratio between co-precipitation experiments and simple adsorption ones, low affinity anions (e.g. Cr(VI) for ferrihydrite) showed quantitative agreement in spite of deferent forms of ferrihydrites between them, that is, amorphous ferrihydrite was formed in co-precipitation experiments, but goethite was formed in simple adsorption ones. In order to discuss the mechanism of co-precipitation phenomena, three experimental studies have been carried out: (i) adsorption isotherm measurement in the co-precipitation experiments of As(V) or Cr(VI) with ferrihydrite, (ii) zeta potential measurement of co-precipitated or simple ad-sorbed ferrihydrite with As(V) or Cr(VI), and (iii) XRD analysis of co-precipitated As(V) for ferrihydrite. All experimental results suggested the main mechanism in co-precipitation phenomena of As(V) was not only a surface complexation (simple adsorption) but also a surface precipitation.

"The most common agglomeration technique in iron and steelmaking is sintering, which requires the use of iron ore/concentrate mixtures, limestone and dolomite as fluxes and coke as fuel in order to produce the required melt at high temperature to cause agglomeration of the particles. Sinter feed blends containing high proportions of magnetite concentrate are difficult to granulate and to produce granules of high permeability, and sufficiently robust quasi-particles for successful sintering operations. Since the granulation of iron ore sinter feed requires no use of a binder, the added fluxes play a vital role in holding the granule particles together until they sinter. The fluxes also help to improve the granule quality and control slag composition in the blast furnace. It is well-known that the particle size distribution of the fluxes affects the granulation effectiveness and green bed permeability which determine the productivity, physical and metallurgical properties of the granules and sinter. Hence it is necessary to understand the role of flux particle size on granule properties so as to improve the granulation of iron ore sinter feed blends containing high magnetite concentrate. In this study, laboratory granulation experiments have been carried out on iron ore sinter feed blends containing high proportions of magnetite concentrate at different addition levels of limestone and dolomite mean particle sizes, to understand the influence of limestone and dolomite particle sizes on granulation rate processes and granule properties.INTRODUCTION Increases in iron ore production to meet the global demand for iron and steel products has led to the depletion of high grade iron ores and thus the current utilisation of low grade iron ore fines and concentrates. However, sinter, pellets and the lump are the required feed types used in the blast furnace. The high basicity sinter is the main iron bearing feed accounting for 70-85% in the blast furnace due to its good metallurgical and mechanical properties that allow high productivity, efficient processes and low production cost (Adam et al., 2017)."

The utilization of acid leaching tailings was studied. It is obvious that the Fe in acid leaching tailings can be leached into solutions as Fe2+. In this paper, the influence of conditions, including the concentration of ferrous sulfate, pH, temperature and velocity of air flow was investigated. The optimum conditions for preparing seed crystal are as follows: the concentration of ferrous sulfate is 20 g/L; pH is 9.5~10; reaction temperature is 10~20?; velocity of air flow is 0.4m3/h. The optimum conditions for preparing iron oxide red are as follows: the concentration of ferrous sulfate is 5 g/L; reaction temperature is 80~85?; velocity of air flow is 0.13m3/h. At last, the product of iron oxide red could be prepared by ammonia method.

"Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

Extensive literature exists on the motion of single bubbles and the behaviour of swarms of bubbles. This contribution describes work to track and reveal the motion of individual bubbles in a swarm. The technique is based on high speed cinematography and tracking of multiple moving objects. Image processing algorithms were implemented in Matlab to isolate and measure geometric proper-ties of the bubbles in image sequences recorded at 2 ms interval; and these properties were compiled into a data structure. To track a bubble, the geometric properties and a matching criterion were applied on consecutive pictures to identify the bubble. The bubble trajectory was reconstructed from the data structure for the matched objects. The methodology is briefly described. The new technique was tested for bubbles produced at slot-type spargers (i.e., approximately 2-D swarms) in the presence of two frother types ('strong' and 'weak'). Two observations are discussed: a) that bubble motion in a swarm describes a velocity-size relationship dictated by the dominant bubble size class; and b) that surfactant type influences bubble rise velocity for bubbles in the range 0.1 mm to 4 mm. The latter suggests surface viscosity rather than surface immobilization determines bubble rise velocity.

"In general the electric pulse treatment is composed from two processes – electric pulse grinding and electric explosive (electric discharging) activation. The electric pulse grinding with the effect of selective destruction refers to a major slag fraction, more that 2-5 mm, when a one can see a physical prerequisites for electrical breakdown of the slag particles. The electric pulse treatment of slag is considered as an additional operation in the technological scheme extraction of non-ferrous metals from copper smelting slags in addition with mechanical grinding, flotation enrichment and acid leaching. Studies of the reprocessability of pelletized slag have shown the possibility of higher extracting non-ferrous metals via flotation after electric pulse disintegration (EPD) treatment. By using EPD of slag pellets, it is possible to increase the non-ferrous metal yield to concentrate by 18-24%.INTRODUCTION The use of the explosive effect of the plasma discharge channel at electrical breakdown of a solid at a pulsed high voltage is the physical basis of the electric pulse method of destruction of geomaterials (Vorobiev et al., 1971; Andres, 1995; Semkin et al., 1995). The flowing of a pulsed current in the discharge channel is accompanied by a sharp increasing of plasma’s temperature and pressure, leading to a supersonic expanding of the discharge channel, the formation in the solid of intensive mechanical tension field, spreading of cracks, and eventually, to the destruction of the solid. Fragmentation and grinding of ore and mineral aggregates by electric pulse method due to a number of specific physical mechanisms of power load and crack formation, belonging only to this method, is different by high selectivity of destruction. This ensures better liberation of grains of individual minerals and their better preservation from destruction and less formation of a slurry output. These features creates the prerequisites for a more complete extraction of a useful mineral in the concentrate during ore dressing, to improve the quality of concentrate. In contradistinction to mechanical methods, electric pulse technology does not contaminate the product with instrumental metal, material of lining and grinding bodies. The possibility simply and in a wide range to change the dynamic load character allows to regulate the granulometric composition of the product of grinding, to obtain a narrower class of product size than is possible with mechanical grinding. The product of electric pulse grinding is characterized by less roundness and large specific surface area of grains due to the trait, that a new surface is formed in the process of splitting during the expanding of cracks. The degradation product has increased sorption and reactivity in chemical reactions. Liberation of the mineral inclusions particle better corresponds to their initial natural state in the rock and this is the great importance for the study of mineral raw materials."

In this study, approximately 3 tons of coal sample taken from thickener entrance was prepared by mineral processing techniques and cleaned by gravity methods. The samples were classified to 5 size fractions by wet screening. The size fractions of +1mm and -1 +0.500 mm were chosen for direct consumption or cleaning by spirals. The studies by Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) were carried out with the -0.500 +0.280 mm and -0.280 +0.020 mm size fractions where the -0.020 mm fraction does not used in the experiments. The clean coal fractions of +1 mm and -1 +0.500 mm obtained by classification were subjected to lower calorific value (LCV), ash and total sulphur analyses. The results were 4168-4946 kcal/kg (on dry basis), 31.01-38.54 % ash and 4-4.27 % total sulphur content respectively. The results of the clean coal concentrated by MGS experiments in -0.500 +0.280 mm fraction was found 5918 kcal/kg LCV, 19.82 % ash content and 80.47 % combustible recovery. The results for the -0.280 +0.020mm fraction were 6004 kcal/kg LCV, 19.19 % ash content, 80.47 % combustible recovery respectively. With reference to the above experimental results, pre-economic evaluation studies were completed and decided to construct an additional unit to the plant. Capacity of the constructed unit is 75.000 t/y which corresponds $ 2.600.000 income in a year. General Directorate of Turkish Coal Enterprises concluded to apply this project to the other coal washing plants in the country due to the successful results of this study and laboratory studies has been going on by MTA currently. "A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The methodology incorporates a flotation simulation program “SUPASIM” which translates flotation performance from bench-scale tests to full-scale plant. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist. Kelsall’s unmodified equation incorporating two rate terms describing slow and fast floating components is used as the basis of the method. The flotation behaviour of an ore is described by a set of numbers, which can be compared in the evaluation of ore types, mineralogy and operating conditions. In so doing a precise relationship is developed between metallurgical performance in terms of grade and recovery and flotation kinetics.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, encompassing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum and various slags. In three cases, plants have treated more than one type of ore. The method has successfully been used to predict and design four flotation plants using data generated from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted. In the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants in South Africa and the Americas. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants."

"Pulp handling in mineral processing circuits is very complicated due to its inherent different specifications compared with other fluids such as water. Because any variation in ore property (e.g. size and abrasion index) and pulp specification (e.g. density, solid content and pressure) causes problem in this part and reduces the plant availability and throughput as a result. The most common issues in the hose system are sumps and pipe-line blockage, wearing of the pumps impeller and liner, and pipe tearing specially at elbows and bends. High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) is employed in a closed circuit with a screen as the first stage of grinding in Zarand Iranian Steel Complex (ZISCO). Wearing of the pump and pipeline transferring the screen undersize stream was the main problem from the plant commissioning. The plant couldn't achieve to the design capacity because of this defect. Although various practical solutions such as improving the pipes and impeller material quality and eliminating the elbows, as much as possible, were done in order to downtime minimizing, but damages didn’t vanish. Since HPGR discharge contains somewhat rough and abrasive particles, the mentioned modifications didn't effective very much. Therefore, converting of the wet screen to dry and using of belt conveyor to the screen undersize handling was employed based on the plant capability evaluation and experimental and pilot trial results. Although this reformation imposed another additional cost (for conveyor system), but it had significant advantages such as increasing the plant availability up to 96%, reducing the operating costs of the wear parts, providing more stable operating condition for the HPGR performance and decreasing abrasion rate of the HPGR rolls liner because of the lower moist feed."

"The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated in two slurry systems, i.e. gold cyanidation and geopolymerisation. The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."

India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. "The need to reduce fresh water consumption has pushed many Chilean mining companies to utilize seawater obtained from distant locations. At the same time, increasing amounts of fine particles in copper tailings raise new operational challenges, in particular, the thickening and transport of tailings featuring significant fine fractions, which are predominantly clays. In the present paper, we study the role of salinity – using seawater and NaCl – on the flocculation efficiency of copper sulphide tailings to which kaolinite was added. To mimic the water recovery stage in thickeners, flocculation has been induced in jar tests and the corresponding aggregate size distribution has been estimated from chord length distribution data obtained using a focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) probe, at various mean turbulence intensities. Results show that for constant flocculant dosing, a measurable influence of the salt on the resulting aggregation exists. For each case, resulting optimal turbulence levels are also reported, a particularly interesting feature when comparing flocculation efficiency of the coarse and fine fraction. INTRODUCTION The concentration of copper minerals through comminution and flotation is intensive in the use of fresh water. The need to reduce the consumption of fresh water and the environmental standards associated with increasingly demanding mining operations have driven improvements in the techniques of recovering water from tailings. The challenges are even greater when required to treat minerals with high clay contents. In Chile, kaolinite is one of the most important clays to consider due to its abundance in the tailings from many operations. The most common and highest throughput unit operation in the mining industry for the recovery of water from tailings is gravity thickening, with sedimentation of fine particles assisted by flocculation. Flocculation is the process of forming aggregates by contacting the suspended particles with a flocculant. The flocculant is typically a water-soluble synthetic long-chain polymer, where copolymers of acrylamide and sodium acrylate are the most common types used in the Chilean mining industry. The aggregation mechanism includes the following key steps: (1) flocculant distribution through the suspended particles, (2) flocculant adsorption onto particle surfaces, and (3) collisions between particles leading to polymer bridging to form aggregates, but concurrently (4) breakage of aggregates becomes a factor under prolonged shear (Gregory, 1988)."

At present, Russia is engaged in processing, 3new plants of hard-to-process potash ores with increased content (up to 10 - 12%) of insoluble impurities (insoluble residue ? I.R.). This required additional research to improve the process of potash ores flotation. Based on the study of the effect of dispersive properties of frother and its flow rate on the efficiency of aliphatic amines with different length of the hydrocarbon radical (as sylvite collector) there was showed the possibility to apply high molecular amine with length of hydrocarbon radical C20 ? C26 by normal temperature of circulated plant salt solution (saturated solution KCl ? NaCl ? H2O). There was designed and tested in plant conditions the modified amine collector with the length of the hydrocarbon radical C16 - C26, improving flotation of Sylvite under normal temperature of circulating salt solutions at potash flotation plants. There was made the study of the influence of the hydrocarbon radical length of alkylmorpholine on the Halite flotation from intermediate products of sylvite recleaner flotation with different content of I.R. (silicate-carbonate slimes), at normal and elevated temperature of salt solution. On the basis of the application of modified alkylmorpholine for Halite flotation, there was developed the process of further beneficiation for the intermediate products of sylvite recleaner flotation from potash ores with increased content of insoluble impurities, which can eliminate the circulation of the intermediate products in the process flow sheet of sylvinite ore processing and increase the KCl recovery into the finished product. "At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Among the beneficiation technologies of low grade uranium ores with complex minerals assemblage, flotation is the common process which is used to reduce production cost and eliminate the acid-consuming minerals (Li et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2015)."

It is now well known that the size distribution of the particulate solid has a significant effect on the breakage behavior of particles in the wet as well as dry modes of ball milling operation. In the context of the size discretized batch grinding kinetic model, grinding behavior of particles is characterized by the breakage rate parameters, k, and breakage distribution parameters, B. Understanding the nature of variation of these two sets of parameters with particle size distribution is important for simulation and control of operation of production mills. However, so far it has not been possible to track the variation of both the set of parameters with grinding time simultaneously. In this paper an attempt has been made in this direction by using a modified functional form approach with time dependent constants. "It is great significance to realize the efficiently and comprehensively utilization of iron, manganese and aluminum from refractory high-aluminum and high-manganese iron ores. Aimed at the two types of low grade refractory iron ores, mineralogical characteristics were studied. The direct reduction behaviors and evolution of mineral compositions of single iron ores and their blended ones were analyzed, and the corresponding reduction mechanisms were demonstrated. The results showed that only a part of iron oxides in high-aluminum ore are transformed to metallic iron after reduction, while the other react with aluminum and silica to form fayalite and hercynite which are difficult to be reduced. For the high manganese iron ore, most iron oxides can be reduced to metallic iron and manganese oxides can combined with aluminum-silica minerals to form galaxite and tephroite, promoting the reduction of iron oxides. Co-reduction results demonstrate that reduction of high- aluminum ore can be promoted by adding with high-manganese ore. Metallization and metallic iron grains increase dramatically by elevate high-manganese blending ratio. At the ratio of 60% high- manganese iron ore in the pellet feed, iron-slag separate well with a slag assaying 28.51%~36.35% Al2O3 and the recovery of iron and manganese can be reached 93%, respectively. The high-aluminum rich manganese residue was recycled with H2SO4. INTRODUCTION The growth of the Chinese iron and steel industry has been pushed forward by its rapid economic development in recent years, and 1126 million tons of iron ore have been consumed in 2014, where 933 million tons were imported according to the data from World Steel Association [1]. However, iron resources are limited, and especially the reserves of high-grade iron ores are declining, so it is of significant importance to optimize the mining rate of iron resources [2] and to utilize low- grade refractory iron resources, such as high-aluminum iron ore."

"In froth flotation, frothers are commonly added to the pulp to modify the interfacial properties of bubbles. These properties may be modelled using commercial software packages. The volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to track the interface motion during the post-rupture oscillation of the newly formed bubble. The aim of this research was to provide an insight into the modelling of viscoelastic phenomena through the coalescence dynamics of two bubbles in solutions of various surface tensions using a three-dimensional computational study. Different surface tensions were used to simulate changes in methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) concentration. The computational results were evaluated by comparing the oscillatory motion of the newly formed bubble for the different MIBC concentrations. For known MIBC concentrations, the deviations of the computational damping constants from the experiments were quantified, revealing possible deviations in the VOF surface tension model. In addition, the analysis provided insight into the flow patterns of the fluids and the effect of frother concentration on the velocity magnitude in the liquid and air phases. This analysis provided a further understanding of coalescence dynamic and post-rupture oscillation in froth flotation. Such a process is believed to affect the stability of particles at the interface due to the release of surface energy when the bubble surface is reduced.INTRODUCTIONIn froth flotation, bubble coalescence is an important phenomenon that is highly dependent on the interfacial properties of the liquid film between bubbles. It is known that the frother adsorption at the liquid-air interface changes the interfacial properties, resulting in an increase of surface elasticity and reduction of surface energy (Pugh, 2016). However, in a two-phase system, it is the frother type, concentration, frother molecule conformation at the interface and viscoelasticity properties that dictate film stability (Pugh, 2016). The viscoelasticity phenomena can be explained in terms of surface viscosity, which quantifies the energy dissipation at the interface and surface elasticity that represents the energy absorbed at the interface as result of bubble oscillation (Pugh, 2016). In the case of systems stabilized by nonionic frothers, it has been shown that surface forces alone do not account for film stability, but the viscoelasticity represents the ability to damp external disturbances in the thin film separating the bubbles and prevent coalescence (Santini et al., 2007)."

"Various methods are used to identify the grain composition of fine-grained materials because so far the best notion of the grain size has not found and there is no single method to define grain size. In practice the most important are the following grain sizes: sieve diameter dt, effective diameter de, substitute diameter d2 and statistical diameter dst. The mentioned sizes are connected with the methods of analyses. Methods are correct but measure of different diameters of grain and their results are different.The most important methods of granulometric composition analyses are the following: the sieve analysis, the sedimentation method and the conductometric (Coulter-Counter) methods. In each of these methods various physical features connected with the grain size are measured.Sizes of grains defined by different formulas or measurement methods are associated mutually by dependencies, which are results of differences in their determination or calculation ways.In order to determine principles of results comparison the classification analysis results on linearly or non-linearly connected was made. Analyses which results demonstrate the same type of grain size distribution are treated as linearly connected. It is based on the general formulae which determines the probability density function of random variable which is the function of another random variable having the known density function.In order to show the difference in the grain composition of the same material qualified by different methods, three methods of investigations were distinguished. They are: the sieve analysis performed on precise sieves, the sedimentation analysis performed by means of a sedimentation balance “Sartorius” and the microscopic analysis performed after preparing a microscopic slide where the grain size was measured by the Martin’s method.The materials selected for the analysis were quartzite and glass, which are the material of high purity.The obtained results of mentioned above three types of analyses were approximated by distribution function of four distributions: Weibull, log-normal, cut Weibull and Gaudin-Schuhman."

"The tailings of the Bigadiç Colemanite Concentrator at the West of Turkey which contain 18 % B2O3 and 1.57 % SO3 are collected at the tailing dams near the Concentrator. In this research, it was aimed to obtain colemanite concentrates with a minimum content of 40 % B2O3 and a maximum 0.5 % SO3 from the tailings. At the experimental studies, decrepitation methods were systematically applied following attrition scrubbing and sizing. At the end of the tests, the best decrepitation result were described, at 500oC temperature for 15 min. duration, the final concentrate having 57.84 % B2O3, 0.44 % SO3 with 73 % recovery was obtained.Boron ores reserves of Turkey are about 2.5 billion tons and Turkey has the 63% share of the World’s boron reserves. The boron reserves are located at Eskisehir (Kirka), Kutahya (Emet), Balikesir (Bigadic) and Bursa (Kestelek) districts in Western Turkey. In 2002, the total amount of boron production of Turkey was about 1.4 million tons, which is 40 % of the World boron production.Bigadiç colemanite (Ca2B6O11. 5 H2O) ore with a content of 30-31 %B2O3 are concentrated by attrition tumbling and classification process. So the final concentrates with contents of 40 and 42 % B2O3 are obtained at the size fractions of –125+25mm and –25+ 3 mm respectively. The tailings materials with an 18 % B2O3 content are collected at the tailing dams near the Concentrator. In this research, it was aimed to obtain colemanite concentrates with a minimum content of 40 % B2O3 and a maximum 0.5 % SO3 from Bigadic tailings having 18 % B2O3 and 1.57 % SO3.In experimental tests, attrition scrubbing, wet sieving, gravity separation, electrostatic separation, flotation and decrepitation were adopted to the colemanite tailings, and optimum beneficiation conditions were obtained."
