The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck. "Copper-bearing gold ores have proved difficult to treat in conventional cyanide leaching process owing to prohibitively high consumption of cyanide by readily soluble copper minerals interfering with gold extraction. Cyanide leaching of gold from copper-rich ores can be improved by intensive cyanidation or application of physical and chemical pre-treatment methods (e.g., ultra-fine grinding, roasting and leaching). In this study, nitric acid leaching of a copper-bearing pyritic concentrate (0.3% Cu, 62 g/t Au and 110 g/t Ag) as pre-treatment prior to cyanidation was investigated. The mineralogical analysis of the concentrate has revealed that it is composed of mainly quartz (25%), pyrite (32.7%), sphalerite (5.37 %), galena (2.12 wt %) and anglesite (1.13 %). Arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite were also detected as minor phases present. Previous studies carried out by the authors showed that direct cyanidation (1.5 g/L NaCN) of the as-received concentrate (d80: 80 µm) produced low gold (45% Au) and silver (46% Ag) extractions. Nitric acid pretreatment of the as-received concentrate was performed for 5 hours at 1-5 M HNO3 and 80oC. In these tests, 65% Cu/Pb and 94% Zn were leached. The nitric acid pre-treatment improved the extraction of gold and silver in subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5 g/L NaCN) to 82% Au and 87.5% Ag with a concomitant decrease (up to 54%) in cyanide consumption. It can be inferred from these findings that the removal of copper from the concentrate and the liberation of the occluded gold by nitric acid leaching as pretreatments can be appropriately employed for the treatment of the copper-bearing pyritic concentrate with high gold/silver content. INTRODUCTION Refractory ores are often characterized by their low amenability to cyanide leaching resulting low (often <80%) Au/Ag extractions (Bhappu, 1990; Celep et al., 2009; Marsden and House, 2006). One of the most common causes of refractoriness is the physical or chemical encapsulation of submicroscopic or fine-grained gold in sulphide minerals such as arsenopyrite and pyrite (La Brooy et al., 1994; Vaughan, 2004). To render refractory gold ores/concentrates amenable to cyanide leaching, the decomposition of sulphide minerals within a pre-treatment process to expose the encapsulated gold grains to the action of cyanide is required. In this regard, roasting, pressure oxidation and biooxidation are commercially used processes for pretreatment of arsenopyrite/pyrite gold ores/concentrates ahead of cyanide leaching (La Brooy et al., 1994). Presence of cyanide-soluble copper minerals in the ore leads to low gold recoveries and high cyanide consumptions under conventional cyanide leaching conditions. High cyanide concentrations (CN:Cu>4) should be employed to achieve high gold recoveries from copper-rich gold ores/concentrates. This may require recovery of cyanide from effluents. In this regard, SART Process (sulphidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening) employed industrially for recovery of cyanide and copper as a by-product. This process simply relies on the addition of sulphide (as Na2S, NaSH or H2S) to the leach solution prior to the acidification to pH 4-5. This results in the precipitation of copper as Cu2S and occurrence of free cyanide which is recycled to the leaching circuit after S/L separation (Dai et al., 2012)."

Low extractions (<80%) in cyanide leaching impose the application of physical and chemical pre-treatment methods (e.g., ultra-fine grinding, roasting, alkaline leaching) prior to cyanide leaching to achieve acceptable recoveries. The effectiveness of the selected pre-treatment method is linked intimately with inherent mineralogical properties of ore. In this study, a refractory silver ore assaying 145 g/t Ag was subjected to various pretreatment tests in an attempt to eliminate its refractoriness. Direct cyanidation of the ground ore (d80: 65 µm) produced a low silver extraction of only 29.5% over 24 h indicating its high refractoriness. Previous studies have shown that silver occurs mainly as Sb/As containing sulfide minerals such as pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) and proustite (Ag3AsS3), which do not respond well to cyanide leaching. Also, silver-containing minerals are closely associated with and/or encapsulated in other mineral phases that can restrict the contact of cyanide with silver. Therefore, alkaline leaching (using 3 M of Na2S, NaOH or KOH solution) and ultra-fine grinding as pre-treatment methods were tested to improve the extraction of silver. All the alkaline leaching tests were carried out for 3 h at800C. Neither NaOH nor KOH leaching produced the desired effect on the extraction of silver (i.e., ~30%). Even, a sharp decrease in the extraction of silver (i.e., 10%) was observed in Na2S leaching. On the other hand, ultra-fine grinding (UFG) (d80: 3 µm) substantially improved the extraction of silver in cyanide leaching (95% Ag at 24 h after UFG). It can be inferred from these findings that the refractoriness of the ore is essentially physical in character (i.e. the encapsulation of silver presumably in non-sulphide minerals such as barite and quartz).

"Current status of question about grinding stage effect to electrochemistry parameters of operation preparation slurry before intermediate selective flotation was assessed in the present scientific work. Needs of more detail study chemical reactions in the slurry preparation and flotation processes were shown. The ores are polymetallic sulphide type and the one are most difficult for mineral processing. The methodology allows increase information base during floatation tests. Ionometric methods and elements of neural network have been used in the study of mineral processing questions.We have also identified the relationship between the received values of the electrochemical parameters and the technological results in selective flotation. The optimal values of the electrochemistry parameters in operation of the preparation slurry before selective flotation has been found. The main effect of using the proposed methodology is to obtain scientifically based solutions to improve the technology parameters of flotation polymetallic sulfide ores. Challenging issue of selectivity of sulphide-polymetallic ores will be considered using case study of sulphidepolymetallic ores. It was shown that several factors are formed in ore grinding: formation of hydroxyl oxides of iron compounds, copper cation leaching, metal-sulphide and metal-sulphite complexes formation. The chemistry was revealed for current processes in slurry preparation operation before selective flotation. Quantitative assessment of interrelations between electrochemical parameters of slurry and process performance was given with using electrochemical control methods. Neuron network-based model was estimated based on data array and was allowed to establish optimum electrochemical conditions of metal-sulphite complex formation to provide maximum efficiency of selective flotation.INTRODUCTIONPhysical and chemical processes that take place in ore grinding have a significant impact on flotation selectivity and can cause low selectivity of the flotation process. "The research study has been devoted to point out the better way to process a colemanite concentrate characterised by a high content of two kind of As sulphides (realgar and orpiment) finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to determine all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.There is a not neglectable part of realgar highly disseminated into the colemanite crystals.The orpiment recurs in small acicular crystals of 20÷30 µm in length and 5 µm in width, very difficult to liberate from the colemanite mineral particles.The colemanite concentrate, in fact, has been addressed to a chemical plant which products were boric acid and gypsum, the contaminated by As. It was unacceptable for further applications and very dangerous if rejected in the environment.Grinding tests under dry and wet conditions have been carried out in order to evaluate the liberation modality of the As sulphide minerals from the colemanite.Some difficulties have been overtaken in order to obtain a selective liberation of the As sulphides from the colemanite even if a certain decreasing in As grade in the higher size classes has been registered.All the comminution products have been analysed by SEM monitoring the liberation degree of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out after different comminution flow sheet adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:• collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;• kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise the mineral recovery in the froths;• kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;• conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and to avoid segregation of Asbearingparticles together with colemanite ones;• solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant."

"One of the most important advances in the world gold metallurgy is the introduction of adsorption technologies for processing of ores and concentrates. «Adsorbent-In-Pulp» process allows to eliminate pulp filtration that is especially important during processing of clay and slime bearing ores. “Adsorbent-In-Leach” process is one of the ways for processing of preg-robbing (carbonaceous) products. High efficiency, increased metals recovery, decrease in capital and operational costs, possibility of easy control and adjustment are the advantages of adsorption processes. Anion-exchange resins and activated carbons are used as adsorbents. This paper presents Irgiredmet experience on gold adsorption technology using both adsorbents (RIP, RIL, CIP, CIL processes). It includes results of long-term studies of different theoretical and practical issues of adsorption processes. Irgiredmet started development of ion exchange technology (RIP, RIL) in 1964. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for 15 RIP plants of the former USSR. During this test work a great number of newly synthesized resins including strong- and medium-base resins was studied, different types of adsorption feed (ores and concentrates) were tested; some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption for silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, designs of technological equipment for adsorption, elution, electrowinning processes including pulsation columns, electrowinning cells etc. were developed. Irgiredmet took part in commissioning of practically all RIP plants in the former USSR. Due to its efforts RIP process became to be the standard technology. Last Irgiredmet RIP projects include the development of adsorption technology using medium-base resin for the three mines owned by GC Petropavlovsk (Amur region, Russia). The complex of the testworks on activated carbon gold adsorption technology including the search of prospective activated carbons; study on gold adsorption mechanism; development, testing and introduction of process flowsheets and the equipment for their realization was conducted. The original gold elution process was developed. The developed CIP technology was firstly introduced at Lebedinsky gold plant (Yakutia). Now carbon adsorption technology is widely used at Russian gold mines as CIP, CIL, CIC processes. The most relevant example of CIP introduction is Svetlinsky gold plant (Ural, Russia) with capacity 8 Mt of ore/ year."

A low volatile medium coking coal from Jharia coal field, India was used for this investigation. The proximate analysis of the sample shows that it contains about 25% ash, 21.4% volatile matter and 52.4% fixed carbon. The sizewise ash analysis of -0.5 mm coal indicates that -0.5+0.15 mm fraction contains lower ash (21.9%) than -0.15 mm fraction (29.7%). The flotation characteristics of the -0.5 mm coal were determined by release analysis. The study reveals that recovery of combustible at 15% ash is about 27% and 43% at 17% ash level. The low recovery is due to the presence of high ash in finer fraction. In order to improve the recovery, the -0.5 mm feed was classified into -0.5+0.15 mm and -0.15 mm fractions, and subjected to flotation separately. The recoverable combustible obtained from the release analysis of -0.5+0.15 mm at 15% ash level is 46%. The effect of collector dosage, frother dosage and aeration rate on flotation was studied. The responses of these variables in collectorless flotation of the -0.5+0.15 mm fraction containing low ash were also studied. A lower aeration and frother dosage favored the generation of clean coal with low ash. The ash content in the tailing stream from -0.5+0.15 mm flotation circuit is close to that of the original -0.15 mm fraction. The former is ground to -0.15 mm and the two fractions are processed together. As -0.15 mm fraction contains relatively higher ash, collector aided flotation using sodium silicate was performed to recover the clean coal with 17% ash. The products of the overall flotation circuit having different ash levels were recommended for use in different applications. The reject from -0.15 mm flotation circuit contained 56.4% ash which can be used for fluidized bed combustion (FBC). This eventually leads to complete utilization of coal.

"It was developed in this work a computational tool to aid in anomaly detection present in the operation of ball mills. The tool uses a torque estimator that is based on measurements taken exclusively in the drive motor. The ball mill equipment widely used in the mining industry has, inherent to its principle of operation, high energy consumption and low efficiency. These characteristics are accentuated when the mill operates outside the ideal conditions of velocity and loading. Direct measurement of these variables is extremely difficult because it requires the installation of sensors in moving parts of the mill. Thus, systems that can help monitoring the operating conditions and predict anomalies are useful because they contribute to improving the performance of the process, help to reduce the energetic consumption, wear on the mill surface and frequency of maintenance shutdowns. The detection strategy implemented in this work is based on the fact that operational anomalies such as an inadequate percentage of balls and incorrect angular velocity manifest itself as a change in spectral components of the torque signal in the mill driven by an electric motor. The mill torque was estimated by processing motor variables measured by sensors commonly used for control purpose and installed exclusively in the motor. The mill was operated at various fault operating conditions and signals from electric motor and vibration on the mill shaft were measured. The spectral components present in the estimated torque signal were then compared with signals from a vibration sensor in order to establishing a correlation with anomalous operation condition of the mill. The experimental results showed that the signals obtained has an excellent correlation with other variables obtained by direct measurement and have potential to be used to construct a system for automatic fault detection in the operation of ball mills."

"The separation of valuable and gangue minerals according to their surface hydrophobicity in a froth flotation tank occurs in both its pulp and froth phases. In the pulp phase, hydrophobic particles must be brought into contact with rising bubbles introduced at or near the bottom of the tank. In a mechanical froth flotation tank, this is primarily achieved through the agitation of the pulp by an impeller or by a rotor-stator system. However, the turbulent and mixing effects of such an impeller or rotor-stator system, necessary to promote bubble-particle interactions in the pulp, are not confined to the pulp zone, but are transmitted into the froth zone at the pulp-froth interface. This impeller-induced turbulence at the pulp-froth interface is compounded by the impulse of buoyant bubbles entering the base of the froth phase, reducing the stability, and thus separation performance, of the resulting froth. Hence, turbulence improves separation performance if it occurs deep in the pulp phase, but diminishes it if it occurs close to the pulp-froth interface. For this work, a performance-enhancing pulp phase insert was designed to isolate the impeller-induced turbulence from the pulp-froth interface in a laboratory-scale, continuously-operated froth flotation tank. The result was a shifted grade-recovery curve that allows the insert to be designed to maximize the recovery from the system without sacrificing the grade of the concentrate, or vice versa, along a spectrum of improved performance. This paper will present the insert design and development process that resulted in this improved grade-recovery curve, as well as a set of heuristics that could be used to design a similar insert for pilotand industrial-scale validation and deployment.INTRODUCTIONAn almost ubiquitous design feature of commercial flotation tanks is the enclosure of the impeller to create a concentrated turbulent zone (Mavros, 1992). These turbulent zone enclosures are varied-- from the rotor-stator design of, for instance, Outotec cells, to the air disperser design of Wemco cells-- but all share the same rationale: that turbulence is desirable to promote bubble-particle interactions (Ralston, 1999), and to produce smaller bubbles (Wills, 2006), but also undesirable because it promotes the detachment of valuable mineral particles from bubbles, and exacerbates entrainment-inducing mixing at the pulp-froth interface (Jameson, 2010)."

A tertiary amine containing polyamine in its back bone was grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide by means of a series of chemical reactions.The synthesized amine functionalized polyaniline grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide (EGAMPANI) was characterized using various techniques such as, FTIR, TGA, Raman, and X-Ray diffraction.The synthesized EGAMPANI was blended with carbon paste electrode, and used to study the response of Hg2+ in acetate buffer solution.Preliminary analysis showed that the anodic current intensity using the EGAMPANI modified electrode was higher during a potential sweep and 10-4 M concentration of mercury could be detected which could be improved to 10-6 M using anodic stripping voltammetric technique. "This paper contains description of research results of technology development for copper recovery from weathered tails of iron processing plant. The predominant host mineral that contains valuable component is chalcopyrite occurring in its free form and in associations with ore and rock-forming minerals. Copper grade is 0.26-0.30%. Emulsion inclusions of chalcopyrite in pyrite and sphalerite were noted. Major problem is low copper recovery (30-35%) by flotation. When studying chalcopyrite in primary concentrate it was determined that the surfaces of many chalcopyrite grains are covered with oxide films which prevented collector attachment onto them. Second issue was deep association of chalcopyrite with pyrite and sphalerite. Sulfidizing reagent addition did not help to reach the required level of copper recovery to concentrate. In the result of research performed the technological flowsheet was developed including preliminary treatment of head material in a special unit aiming at oxide films removal, followed by copper rougher flotation on head size tails, crude concentrate regrinding and a number of cleaner flotation operations. After the treatment of weathered tails according to the flowsheet developed, copper recovery to flotation concentrate became 71.53%, at 23.46% copper grade. The suggested technology allows one to solve the issue with treatment of technology-related copper-containing stockpile material, as well as to include the ores where copper is represented by sulfide minerals covered with oxide films into processing."

"The aim of the study was to develop and implement more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collectors. A hypothesis has been formulated on the action of dialkyldithiophosphates in the flotation of sulphide ores based on the assessment of their complexing properties and surface activity at the liquid-gas border. Dialkyldithiophosphates form weaker complexes with cations of heavy metals compared to xanthates, and are characterized by a large difference in the strength of their complexes with heavy metal cations. It provides higher selectivity of dialkyldithiophosphates in the separation of non-ferrous metal sulphides and iron sulphides from them. To make a quality assessment of the impact of surface activity of the synthesized collectors on their selectivity of action and collecting power, an assessment of the surface tension of their aqueous solutions has been performed using the stalagmometer method. It is well known that a stronger collector is characterized by a greater surface activity, in contrast to a more selective collector which is characterized by a lower surface activity. Based on studies, new dialkyldithiophosphate collectors BTF 163 and BTF 1552 are suggested for use in the flotation of sulphides to increase the recovery of copper, gold and silver. The collector BTF 163 was introduced at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan and has been undergoing industrial testing in the sulphide cycle of scheelite-skarn-sulphide ores in a factory in the far east of Russia. The collector BTF 1552, which increases the recovery of silver and gold by 3%, was approved for industrial testing in another far-eastern factory. A modification of the reagent BTF 1552, the new reagent BTF 1522, was introduced in the flotation of copper-zinc ore at a factory in Kazakhstan."

"In this paper, an alternative beneficiation process was developed to recover nickel minerals from low-grade weathered ores. The studied sample, 0.3% Ni grade, is essentially composed of nickel sulfides (pyrrhotite and pentlandite); magnetite and silicates (mostly talc and amphibolites) are the primary gangue minerals. The particle size distribution was controlled using a grinding operation to avoid producing an excess of fine particles by overgrinding. The sample underwent a grinding step for the fine degree of liberation. The slimes (-20 ?m) were removed via two desliming stages in hydrocyclones (diameters of 1.5" and 2"); the ground material, which was classified in a range of (-150+20) ?m, was processed by column flotation in three different stages: rougher flotation for magnesium silicates, rougher flotation for sulfides, and cleaner flotation for sulfides, using pilot flotation columns (2" and 6" in diameter and 20 ft high). The goal of using the preliminary magnesium silicate flotation step was to remove hydrophobic minerals (mostly talc) that would float naturally with the sulfides, which would decrease the Ni grade in the concentrate, as well as to reduce the MgO content because this compound is considered harmful in metallurgical processes when a grade greater than 9% is used. The final concentrate obtained in the cleaner flotation step reached up to 2% Ni and 7.0% MgO. The global and flotation recoveries in the process were approximately 30% and 60%, respectively, due to the losses of Ni during the desliming process. Despite this low global recovery, the adopted beneficiation process can be considered an interesting alternative to produce nickel concentrate from tailings or waste materials."

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture.In particular Davy derived an equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. Furthermore, this covariance can also be used to measure the variance of the composition distribution of each mineral.This paper shall present results verifying this equation. The experimental method was based on obtaining particle information from serially-sectioned particles. Particle samples selected for serial sectioning displayed a range of natural textures including liberated, binary and composite particles. The exposed surface of the polished sections were analysed using QEM*SEM. This procedure was repeated until all of the grains have been polished away. The covariance of mineral distributions were calculated from the serial sections and compared with that calculated using Davy’s equation."

Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.

"Molybdenum is currently the most important by-product of Chile´s copper mining industry. This mineral has gained international relevance over the years, because of its price. At mining deposits in Chile, copper and molybdenum are extracted together and then separated in a concentration process consisting of several flotation steps using sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) as copper depressant. However, there are environmental issues related to the potential emisions of toxic hydrosulfide gas and bad odours, which affects nearby communities and suppose a risk for operators. This problem has led to the need for development of new technologies to eliminate the use of NaHS in the process of selective flotation of Cu and Mo minerals. In this work, results of flotation tests in which lignin derivatives reagents are used to obtain the selective separation of Cu and Mo minerals by flotation are presented. In this technology molybdenite is depressed by the action of lignin derivatives (lignosulfonates), while copper sulfides remain hydrophobic and float. The use of lignin derivatives in the selective flotation of copper molybdenum minerals represents a non-toxic alternative to NaHS.INTRODUCTIONSeparation of copper sulfides from molybdenite is commonly achieved through a two-stage flotation process. In the first stage the collective flotation of copper sulfides and molybdenite is promoted to generate a collective concentrate which is then treated in a second stage with sodium hydrosulfide (2.5-3.0 kg/t NaSH) to depress copper sulfides flotation without affecting the flotation of molybdenite. As a result a copper concentrate with 30-35% Cu, and a molybdenum concentrate with 50-52% Mo are generated. Although this process is widely used at industrial level, environmental issues related to the risk of H2S generation and bad odors have always been a concern. Thus there is a need in the industry for a more environmentally friendly process to separate copper sulfides and molybdenite."

"Process automation as an engineering discipline is more than control systems since it includes industrial instrumentation, such as sensors, transmitters and actuators, as well as control and supervision systems, collection and transmission of data and real-time software applications to supervise and control the operation of plants or industrial processes. In the last several decades, accelerated technological development has provided a variety of software and hardware tools to aid development, maintenance and continuous improvement of automated systems. These developments however seldom reach their full potential in real plants. There are many factors to be considered, among them human capital specific training and the organization model. In this paper, a methodology for training engineers in advanced control and supervision of flotation plants is presented based on study of the application of these technologies in hybrid pilot plants. Since experimentation in real plants may present undesirable risks and costs, and simulation studies are usually limited to some unrealistic conditions, a laboratory where on-line measurements of the hydrodynamic behaviour of a pilot plant is mixed with phenomenological models has been created. In this form, an environment as close as possible to a real plant can be recreated. A flotation column and a circuit of three pneumatic cells are fully instrumented and connected to a PLC and PC network. In the control room, students learn applications of classical PID control in a DCS environment, advanced predictive control, on-line process operation diagnosis, fault analysis, virtual sensors and expert-fuzzy systems. Several undergraduate and graduate courses and theses are supported by this Process Control Laboratory infrastructure. Examples of these applications are discussed."

China is a country with abundant resources of tungsten, taking one of the world?s top-positions regarding both the total reserve and the amount of industrial production. China?s tungsten resources occur mostly in multi-metallic deposits rather than in single-metallic deposits. China?s multi-metallic tungsten ores have the characteristics of coexistence with other valuable components such as molybdenum, bismuth, copper, sulfur and fluorite. These ores are usually low in grade and difficult to process. The technological challenge in mineral processing lies in separation of multi-metallic components in these complex ores and a comprehensive utilization of natural resource. Several cases of industrial practice of processing China?s typical multi-metallic tungsten ores are presented.

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. "The paper presents the results of study of the sorption and flotation properties of the reagents of plant origin - tannin and natural extracts of the oak bark and stems of plants, with a view to their application as a low-cost environmentally friendly modifiers of iron sulfide flotation for the recovery of minerals containing precious metals. The technique of preparation of plant extracts with a fixed content of extractable tannins has been developed.The mechanism of flotation reaction of tannin extracts has been identified as based on their adsorption on the surface of pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite to form strong complexes with iron (III) at concentrations below micelle concentration. It has been found that adsorption of plant extracts occurs without displacement of primarily adsorbed xanthate, and preliminary adsorption of xanthate did not preclude fixation of tannin on the mineral surface.It has been shown that plant extracts having hydrophilizing properties at low concentrations could be applied as selective depressants for pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in a weakly acidic, neutral or weakly alkaline medium. The use of plant modifiers could help to increase the quality of gold- and platinumcontaining concentrates and reduce the ecological impact on the environment."
