Given the global scarcity and value of potable water, interest in the use of water of lower quality in mineral processing has grown significantly in recent years. Previous laboratory batch flotation tests conducted at CSIRO have shown that chalcopyrite floats strongly without collector in distilled water and that the collectorless flotability of chalcopyrite is unaffected by the use of brackish water, sea water or hypersaline water. In contrast, bornite is moderately flotable without collector in distilled water but all three lower-quality waters have a detrimental effect on the recovery of bornite. The depressant effect is so strong that the little recovery achieved in these waters was only slightly above what might have been expected from entrainment alone. This work has now been extended to another important copper sulfide mineral, chalcocite. In contrast to chalcopyrite and bornite, chalcocite does not exhibit collectorless flotability so the chalcocite tests in this study were performed in the presence of a standard collector (potassium ethyl xanthate). The results reveal that chalcocite is flotable with xanthate in distilled water but the lower-quality waters have a detrimental effect on the recovery of chalcocite. This effect is partly reversed by increase collector additions. Further tests were completed in order to investigate the effect of the different ions present in the saline waters on chalcocite flotation. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed in terms of the pulp chemistry of the system.

"The diffusion rate of cupric ions and limiting current density are important factors that determine the rate of copper mass transport in electrolytes proximal to the electrodes used in electrorefining. As a result, diffusion can critically affect both the rate and morphology of cathodic copper deposition thus it is crucial that it be optimized to improve production. The diffusion coefficient of cupric ion (DCu(II)) in copper electrolytes has been previously researched but the values detailed in the literature show significant variations and moreover arsenic - a common impurity - is generally excluded. Furthermore, in previous studies the models have only been validated with model solutions rather than real industrial electrolytes. In this study, the limiting current density and diffusion coefficient of cupric ion were defined for synthetic electrolytes containing copper (40–60 g/dm3), nickel (0–20 g/dm3), sulfuric acid (130–220 g/dm3) and arsenic (0–45 g/dm3). The cathodic limiting current densities were measured at three temperatures (50, 60, 70 °C) with linear sweep voltammetry using the rotating disc electrode (RDE) as the cathode. By utilizing the limiting current density, models for the DCu(II) were constructed using Levich equation. The validity of the DCu(II) model for technical use was confirmed through their application to industrial electrorefining electrolytes with known element concentrations. Consequently, this study provides improved models for limiting current density and diffusion coefficient of cupric ion that can be utilized for industrial process optimization.INTRODUCTION For an efficient copper electrolysis process, the mass transport of copper ions has to be effective. The main mass transport types of copper ions in copper electrorefining are diffusion and convection while the effect of migration is negligible. In order to maintain good mass transport, it is beneficial to keep both diffusion and convection high to maximize the limiting current density (jlim) (Bard and Faulkner, 2001). jlim is the highest current density that can flow in the cell, thus by maximizing jlim the deposition time can be minimized and the good quality of cathodic copper can be ensured. Thus, it is important to research possibilities that increase and optimize diffusion since slow diffusion in the electrolyte limits the rate of the process (Levich, 1947; Moats et al., 2000; Subbaiah and Das, 1989)."

Based on the scientific investigations on mechanochemical synthesis of metal sulphides from metals or metal compounds and sulphur or sulphur compounds, the article describes the industrial production of nanoscale metal sulphides. Special operational conditions such as inert atmosphere, size and type of the grinding balls, grinding time and specific energy input are taken into consideration. A system configuration for the manufacturing of sulphides at a capacity of 100 kg/h is presented.

It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.

Tailing slurry is usually abrasive and possesses high viscosity. This paper examines the existing iron ore beneficiation process and focuses on some of the key environmental issues related to the disposal of tailings. It identifies that almost 32% of the iron ore extracted ends up as tailings and they are usually disposed in slurry form in tailing ponds. By the year 2000, 27 Mt of iron ore tailings were generated in India, which has become one of the biggest waste handling problems to the industry. Characteristics of the tailings vary widely. So the physical nature of tailings cannot be considered separately in isolation without considering the mill effluent from the beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, studies were carried out in three iron ore mines in India to evaluate the characteristics of tailings from the beneficiation plant. The tailing samples were collected from different locations during a time period of one year and analyzed. The results will be discussed and the characteristics of the tailings have been evaluated. The disposal system of tailings at the three mines was evaluated. The research on the settling characteristics of tailings indicates that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation tests are essential to design appropriate tailings pond with respect to size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested that an additional unit process, i.e. sedimentation tank be added to the process before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.

The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The addition of copper sulfate to mineral slurries in order to ?activate? sulfide mineral surfaces for enhanced collector molecule adsorption, and hence enhanced recovery via flotation, is a com-mon mineral processing practice. It has been established in a laboratory situation that the addition of CuSO4 in conjunction with xanthate collector increases the flotation rate of pentlandite as compared to the addition of collector alone. However, it remains unclear whether the addition of CuSO4has a similar effect within mineral processing circuits. We examine here the effect of pre-activation oxidation on the copper activation of pentlandite and monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite. All activation experiments were carried out at pH 9 using a total solution content of copper ions equivalent to one monolayer (0.210 -4 moles, 110-4M). Copper loss from solution was extremely rapid in all cases with less than 10 % remaining after 10s. EDTA extraction and solution analysis clearly demonstrated that copper activation was via direct surface adsorption and not an ion exchange process, as is the case for sphalerite, and that most copper on the surfaces is in the form of Cu(I). ToF-SIMS analyses of the mineral surfaces subsequent to copper activation show increased surface oxidation on increased conditioning time prior to copper activation. However, there is a significant decrease in surface oxidation on comparison of samples that have otherwise been prepared in the same manner but where one has been exposed to copper solution rather than water. This suggests that copper activation stabilises the surface and reduces the propensity for oxidation. Regardless of the length of pre-activation oxidation time only Fe(III) (no Fe(II)-S) was observed by XPS analysis, indicating a highly oxidised surface layer dominated by Fe-O-OH species. The presence of Cu(II) on the mineral surface is indicative of the formation of Cu(II)-containing precipitates and indicates non-mineral specific activation resulting in increased recovery but lower grade. Mineral specific copper adsorption, as evidenced by the presence of Cu(I), is required to improve both grade and recovery. Prolonged oxidation prior to copper activation causes a reduction in the Cu(I) to Cu(II) ratio on the mineral surfaces as compared to either fresh surfaces or surfaces oxidised for 1 minute only. This strongly indicates that the copper activation process is less effective on highly oxidised surfaces.

A cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column (FCSMC) is an effective separation device for fine grain treatment. The separation of fine ilmenite by FCSMC was explored in this work. The influence of reagents dosage (regulator, collector and auxiliary collector), pulp density, circulation pressure and aeration quantity on TiO2grade and recovery wasinvestigated.The optimal conditions of a rougher are follows: pulp density 45%, pH 5.0, MOH collector dosage 2800 g/t, diesel oil dosage 700 g/t, circulationpressure 0.19 MPa, aeration quantity 0.8 m3/(m2•min). The optimal conditions of a cleaner are follows: pH 4.0, circulation pressures 0.16 MPa, and aeration quantity 0.5 m3/(m2•min).A pilot plant continuous test with a rougher-cleaner by FCSMC for 72 hours was proceeded under the optimum conditions. Compared with industrial flotation machines, the concentrate grade of FCSMC is 48.11% with an improvement of 1.08 percentagepoints, while the recovery is 82.36% with 13.64 percentagepoints increment. Moreover, the flowsheet is simplified from six parts (a rougher-two scavenger-three cleaner) in flotation machines to two parts (a rougher-cleaner) in FCSMC. Proofs were also provided by the analysis of the by-size grade and recovery of concentrate.Results show the FCSMC is an effective separation device to recover -74 µm size fraction.

A red copper plate, discovered in the ruins of Dachengshan in Hebei province, was recognized as a forged one rather than a cast one, which means it was probably made from natural copper during the Longshan Culture period (2200~2208 BC) in the Chinese history. The copperware, found in the Niangniang Tai relics in Wuwei city, Gansu province, contains 99.6% copper and 0.4% Sn, Pb, Sb and Ni, which was guessed to be made during the Qijia Culture about 2000~ 1900 BC in the Chinese history in the late Neolithic before Shang dynasty. This shows that Chinese ancestors were able to distinguish, sort and use some native metals and minerals more than 4000 years ago.

Hydrodynamics and mixing are fundamental to the operation of mineral process systems such as flotation cells and metal precipitation reactors. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique has been employed in the present work to study the hydrodynamics in a mixing vessel stirred with either a Rushton turbine or a pitched blade impeller. The multiple frame of reference (MFR) approach has been used to model both impellers. A draft tube was used only in the Rushton turbine stirred vessel. The flow profiles for the pitched blade impeller have been studied in three regions; below the impeller tip, at the middle of the tank, and near the liquid surface. The simulation results were compared with literature data obtained using a laser Doppler velocimetry in the three regions of the vessel, and it was found that the model predictions were better in the impeller region. There was a poor prediction of the experimental results in the region closer to the liquid surface; however, this was improved when the turbulence parameter (C2) in the k-e model was set to a higher value. The value of the impeller clearance at which the Rushton turbine generates an axial impeller type flow has been determined and it has been shown that, at this clearance, a draft tube can be used to enhance axial flow in a Rushton turbine stirred reactor.

"The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

"The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.One of the simplest separators is the sluice, in which separation takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in so-called hindered settling mode.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates.The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ‘law of the wall’ model.Particle concentration distributions were described using Hunt’s sediment transport model, assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Settling velocities were calculated using either the Richardson and Zaki or Brauer and Thiele models. The latter takes into account particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration.The resulting predictions of particle separation are remarkably good, even though the model does not model the local settling velocity in the slurry."

Adsorption of Thiooxidans ferrooxidans and Mycobacterium Phlei on the surface of pyrite and galena was studied. From the experimental results, it was observed that Mycobacterium Phlei adsorbed preferentially on pyrite than on galena at neutral and alkaline pH values, while Thiooxidans ferrooxidans is not at all pH range, and the scanning electron microscopy photograph also indicated that. FTIR and XPS of two strains of bacteria indicated that there are much functional groups on surface of them, such as O?H, N?H, C-O, C?N, C?O etc, but S-O group occurred on Thioox-idans ferrooxidans cell surface and the P-O group appeared on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface, and the content of C?O?H and C?O?C groups on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface is higher than that on Thiooxidans ferrooxidans cell surface, this also been known from UVS investigation. The affinity of these groups to metal ions on sulfide minerals is able to explain the selective adsorption.

"Sustainability calls for maintenance, rational use and enhancement of natural resources as well as balance consideration of ecology, economy, and social justice. The challenges in mining industry call for a sustained global effort using the leverage of available technologies and emerging new technologies. The industry uses significant amount of energy with the highest portion in comminution. To conserve energy, attempts have been made to improve the efficiency of the conventional crushing and grinding equipment. Nevertheless, the new and energy efficient comminution technologies are favorable through a longer term strategy. Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills, it is logic to conduct part of milling, in the crushing stage. After years of research and development, Sandvik introduces a new crushing technology, VibroconeTM, to change traditional crushing concepts. The new crushing device is able to crush and grind particles with a higher reduction ratio, more than two fold, than that of conventional crushers. By implementation of the new technology, a suitable feed size for milling can be provided to conserve energy as well as media and liner consumption, to reduce milling circulating load or increase mill capacity. There are other benefits associated with this machine, one of them being providing a higher surface area. This paper discusses the performance of the machine and its applications for comminuting different ores."

"The flotation process, largely used for mineral concentration processes, which is based on air bubble adhesion to the dispersed solid phase, is also being used for wastewater treatment purposes. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is based on the separation of the solid-liquid phases with the aid of small air bubbles (10-100 µm), with high values of interfacial contact area, improving the process efficiency. In the process, the air bubbles and particles or flocs form aggregates, which rise to the surface of the flotation cell to be collected. The advantage of producing small bubbles is directly related to the fact that smaller bubbles result in greater bubble-particle interaction. Wastewater produced in alumina refinery - from the red mud filtration step - has a red colored aspect due to the presence of very fine particles of red mud and also dissolved matter that still remain in the filtrate. This wastewater might be treated, aiming to reuse the water in the refinery or discharge it properly in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the DAF process efficiency for the treatment of red mud wastewater in order to decrease suspended particles and dissolved solids contents, in addition to mitigate the high causticity of this wastewater. The process efficiency was evaluated by comparing turbidity removal and total solids concentration in the treated wastewater to the feed. The influence of important variables of the DAF process as type and concentration of coagulant and flocculant were evaluated. It was possible to obtain good turbidity removal efficiencies (up to 90%) using low concentrations of coagulant (50 mg/L) and flocculant (0.5 -1.0 mg/L). In addition, for most of the experiments, the specification for effluent diposal, according to the Brazilian environmental regulation 430 (Conama, 2011): pH range 5 to 9 and turbidity < 40 NTU, was attained. These results emphasize the possibility of using the DAF as an alternative technique to settling and filtration process, that are traditionally used, for treating wastewater from the alumina industry, allowing the reuse of water in the plant or adequate discharge with less environmental impact."

"It is well known among flotation practitioners that the contact angle can be correlated with the amount of material recovered from feed by flotation. The contact angle of solids can easily be modified by the addition of a collector. However, some collectors also have frothing properties thus altering the solid and bubble surface properties simultaneously. To avoid this problem, a technique has previously been used in which silanol groups are attached to the surfaces of the particles, but this method has its own problems. In this work, silica particles with various surface hydrophobicities were prepared using an esterification process. By using alcohols with different hydrocarbon chain lengths, from 4 to 12 carbon atoms, surfaces with a wide range of contact angles could be prepared. The technique was used in the modification of silica particles that were tested in a fluidized bed flotation column, and a laboratory mechanical flotation cell. In parallel experiments, dodecylamine (DDA) was used as a collector. It was found that irrespective of the type of flotation machine and surface preparation method, there was a close correspondence between flotation recovery and the contact angle of the particles. The silanation process has known drawbacks relating to the presence of moisture during the reaction, and the stability of the silane coating after it is been prepared. Esterification does not suffer from these disadvantages. This work has shown that the esterification technique is a robust alternative method for preparing hydrophobic quartz surfaces."

"Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001)."

The conventional Canadian oil sand processing, the Clark Rowe process, is associated with many risks for the environment and high energy costs. To recover the bitumen from the oil sand (tar sand), large quantities of water have to be heated up and mixed with caustic soda and the oil sand. During this process, tailings with stabilized clay colloids are formed and dumped in tailings ponds. To avoid these disadvantages, a new, non-aqueous extraction process is to be established. Organic solvents are used instead of water and caustic soda to mobilize the bitumen from the sand-clay mixture. Pressure filtration, washing and steam pressure filtration are part of the new concept. A mixture of organic solvents and the oil sand is first pressure filtrated in a nutsch filter until a saturation level of one is obtained. After the cake has been formed, the filter cake is washed with organic solvent to flush the bitumen loaded solvent out of the cake. The following steam pressure filtration mechanically and thermally removes the remaining volatile components of the solvents from the filter cake. The filtrates from the pressure filtration, the washing phase and partly from steam pressure filtration are subsequently thermally treated to recover the organic solvents and obtain a higher bitumen concentration in the mixture. This mixture is then lead to an upgrader to win synthetic crude oil (SCO). The recovery of bitumen in the conventional hot water extraction process based on the Clark Rowe process can, in highly optimized plants, achieve between 88 and 92 %. Variation of oil sand properties leads to an actual range of between 80 and 90 % of bitumen recovery. With the alternative process based on organic solvents, the bitumen recovery exceeds the recovery of the conventional process by up to 16 percentage points. The composition of the two organic solvents in the first step of forming a suspension with the oil sand is important. The aromatic component is crucial for liberating and solving the asphaltenes, which tend to flocculate. The order of the two components of organic solvents is also important in the washing step. The paraffinic component is essential to achieve successful steam pressure filtration with respect to fast steam breakthrough and a filter cake free from organic compounds, as a result of its lower boiling point. Calcined calcium oxide from limestone is hydrated to manufacture calcium hydroxide, and then precipitated calcium carbonate is synthesized from calcium hydroxide. Precipitated calcium carbonate of various morphologies is obtained by controlled conditions of each step and characteristics of limestone, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. Especially characteristics of calcium hydroxide have the most influence on morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate character. In this study, therefore, it is investigated the specific surface area of calcium hydroxide and morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate according to hydration temperature. Calcium hydroxide hydrated at high initial temperature has larger particle size than that hydrated at low initial temperature. And formation yield of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate has improved by using calcium hydroxide had larger particle size (hydrated at high initial temperature).

"Chelopech concentrator (part of Dundee Precious Metals) is located in central-western Bulgaria. The current process plant utilizes conventional primary crushing and SAG mill grinding, copper and pyrite rougher and cleaner flotation stages to produce a marketable gold-rich copper and pyrite concentrates. As in the most processing plants, the pyrite depression is carried out alkaline media using lime. The subsequent activation of pyrite mineral is achieved by adding sulfuric acid, which has an adverse effect on the flotation equipment. Therefore, a series of laboratory flotation experiment for activation of lime depressed pyrite by ammonium salts, such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4 and ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3), have been conducted. The obtained results showed that ammonium bicarbonate proved to be the most appropriate reagent choice for pyrite mineral activation. These results are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), performed to determine the surface chemistry of pyrite in its natural state, after lime treatment and subsequent treatment by NH4HCO3. The registered XPS spectra indicate that the hydrophilic phases on the pyrite surface could be efficiently removed by using the ammonium salt NH4HCO3. The industrial use of NH4HCO3 as an activator of lime-depressed pyrite is a possible alternative for sulfuric acid replacement as a most widely used pyrite activator. Flotation experiments with addition of 200, 400, 600 and 800 g/t from each of the studied ammonium salts have been conducted. Furthermore, the impact of the flotation pulp pH within the scope of 9.00 – 10.50 was also investigated. The obtained results from the laboratory flotation experiments, showed that the pyrite activation with ammonium bicarbonate is an excellent possibility for replacing the sulfuric acid as main pyrite activator reagent, in order to eliminate the gypsum accumulation during the flotation of pyrite in Chelopech concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Chelopech deposit, located about 60 km east of Sofia is one of the largest Cu-Au deposits in Europe. The ore have complicated mineralogical and chemical composition. The main ore minerals are represented by pyrite, enargite (luzonite), tennantite, chalcopyrite and bornite. The average copper content of the mined ore is about 1.1 % and the gold content is about 4.0 g/t."
