"Sustainability calls for maintenance, rational use and enhancement of natural resources as well as balance consideration of ecology, economy, and social justice. The challenges in mining industry call for a sustained global effort using the leverage of available technologies and emerging new technologies. The industry uses significant amount of energy with the highest portion in comminution. To conserve energy, attempts have been made to improve the efficiency of the conventional crushing and grinding equipment. Nevertheless, the new and energy efficient comminution technologies are favorable through a longer term strategy. Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills, it is logic to conduct part of milling, in the crushing stage. After years of research and development, Sandvik introduces a new crushing technology, VibroconeTM, to change traditional crushing concepts. The new crushing device is able to crush and grind particles with a higher reduction ratio, more than two fold, than that of conventional crushers. By implementation of the new technology, a suitable feed size for milling can be provided to conserve energy as well as media and liner consumption, to reduce milling circulating load or increase mill capacity. There are other benefits associated with this machine, one of them being providing a higher surface area. This paper discusses the performance of the machine and its applications for comminuting different ores."

"South Africa is the world?s second largest producer of titanium bearing minerals, but apart from producing titanium mineral concentrate to form TiO2 slag, little further value is added in South Africa to mined minerals. Various studies were undertaken by both government and the private sector in an un-coordinated manner until 2007 when the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) planned and adopted a national strategy to establish a local titanium metal industry through the research and development of key technologies that would provide a competitive advantage to such a local industry. The strategy entailed a two-pronged approach in the development of this capability, viz. simultaneous investments in the development of high-level human capital and technology in the fields of titanium metal powder production and downstream titanium metal powder processing technologies. To date significant progress has been made to establish research and/or pilot scale facilities in the following technical areas: TiCl4 production technology, titanium powder production technology, high energy milling of titanium powder, metal injection moulding facilities, rapid production of large components using laser additive manufacturing technology, investment casting of titanium, resource efficient machining of titanium and friction stir welding of titanium. Supporting technologies are also at an advanced stage through investments in titanium powder spheroidization and direct rolling of titanium powder. The intent with investment in some of these areas is not to develop new technology per se, but rather to establish local capability that will position South Africa to collaborate with other organisations in the world so that technologies can be acquired and transferred when needed in the future."

Magneto-flotation is a recently developing technology of mineral processing. This technology combines the traditional magnetic separation with flotation and provides a magnetic and buoyant force compound field to separate different minerals based on the differences of magnetism and floatability between useful minerals and gangue minerals. Magneto-flotation is applicable to separate ferromagnetic from nonmagnetic minerals, especially to separate magnetite from floatable gangue minerals. This magneto-flotation column is equipped with pulse electromagnetic field in the middle upper part, a bubble producer and upwell water inlet in the bottom. The pulse time of electromagnetic field in the column can be optionally adjusted and the maximum intensity of pulse magnetic field can reach 35mT. Pulse magnetic field can not only restrain magnetic minerals from entering into the froth layer, but also destroy the magnetic agglomeration to ensure a higher recovery and a higher concentrate grade. The results of experiments with magnetite show that pulse magnetic field has remarkable influence on flotation process. Compared with single flotation, magneto-flotation column can improve the recovery of magnetite by ten percent. After one time?s magneto-flotation processing, the grade of iron concentrate can increase from 65.4% to 69.5%, the content of silicon oxide in iron concentrate decreases from 7.4% to 2.8%, and the total recovery is above 96%.

Co-precipitation of dilute toxic anions with ferrihydrite is an important removal mechanism in wastewater treatment system. Although, numerous qualitative studies have been published on removal characteristic from wastewater of dilute anions by co-precipitation treatment, detail mechanism or quantitative characteristic is not well understood. This paper discussed the co-precipitation mechanism of As(V) and Cr(VI) with ferrihydrite by comparative experiments between co-precipitation and simple adsorption. In this study, co-precipitation experiments and simple adsorption ones were distinguished closely. In the former, precipitation of hydroxides and adsorption of anions develop simultaneously, but in the latter, anions adsorb onto prepared hydroxides. Although high affinity anions for hydroxides (e.g. As(V) for ferrihydrite) showed quantitative difference of removal ratio between co-precipitation experiments and simple adsorption ones, low affinity anions (e.g. Cr(VI) for ferrihydrite) showed quantitative agreement in spite of deferent forms of ferrihydrites between them, that is, amorphous ferrihydrite was formed in co-precipitation experiments, but goethite was formed in simple adsorption ones. In order to discuss the mechanism of co-precipitation phenomena, three experimental studies have been carried out: (i) adsorption isotherm measurement in the co-precipitation experiments of As(V) or Cr(VI) with ferrihydrite, (ii) zeta potential measurement of co-precipitated or simple ad-sorbed ferrihydrite with As(V) or Cr(VI), and (iii) XRD analysis of co-precipitated As(V) for ferrihydrite. All experimental results suggested the main mechanism in co-precipitation phenomena of As(V) was not only a surface complexation (simple adsorption) but also a surface precipitation.

"Vizcachitas is an advanced stage copper–molybdenum porphyry deposit, fully owned by Los Andes Copper and located in Central Chile. The property contains an indicated resource of 1,038 million tonnes grading 0.37% Cu and 0.012% Mo, and an inferred resource of 318 million tonnes grading 0.345% Cu and 0.013% Mo (Coffey & Alquimia, 2014). The deposit occurs in the same geological belt as several other giant copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits including Río Blanco-Los Bronces, Los Pelambres-Pachon and El Teniente. In 2018, the original Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) study from 2014 was updated; this paper presents the geometallurgical testwork that was performed to support that update. The testwork focused on the metallurgical characterization of 40 DDH samples and the development of a more profound orebody knowledge by relating geological features with metallurgical performance. The scope of work included complete chemical and mineralogical QemSCAN characterization; SAG, ball mill and abrasion testing; complete rougher and cleaner kinetics including locked-cycle-test; environmental ABA and settling tests on rougher tailings. The results show that the ore can be classified as medium-hard, with a hardness that is slightly below the average for large Cu/Mo deposits in the region. A good correlation was found between lithology and breakage characteristics, implying that the specific energy consumption (kWh/t) is well correlated to rock type. The results of the flotation tests were very encouraging and did not show significant variability. An overall Cu recovery of 91% can be expected for the flotation circuit. The use of a relatively coarse primary grind size gave good final recovery and grade for both Cu and Mo, and deserves further attention in future work, as this impacts positively both energy consumption and water recovery.INTRODUCTION Los Andes Copper Ltd. is a Canadian exploration and development company focused on the acquisition, exploration and development of advanced stage copper deposits in Latin America. The paper presents the results of experimental investigations of the effect by high-power nano-second electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) on change of surface composition, physical-chemical and flotation properties of pyrrhotite, and search of optimal combination of flotation reactants providing increase of metal extraction from disseminated copper-nickel ores. Preliminary electropulse effect on products before flotation allows to create optimal conditions for flotation separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite owing to forming the new phases and defects on the surface of sulphides. It was established, that the yield of monomineral fractions of pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalkopyrite increases by 5%~15 %, compared with flotation with one butyl xanthenes (BX), during usage of combination of thionic carbamate (isopropylmethylthionocarbamate (ITC) or isopropylethyl- thionocarbamate (Z-200) with butyl xanthate (BX). Sorption of investigated reactants and strength of their fixing on the surface of minerals are examined; it helped to reveal the cause of rise of floatability of sulphide minerals for the case of combination of reactants. Preliminary high-pulse processing and reactant conditions with usage of combination of thionic carbamate and xanthate have been tested on the sample of disseminated copper-nickel ore from Norilsk region.

In conventional flotation machines, the recovery is strongly related to particle size. As particle size increases, the recovery also increases, reaching a maximum in the range 20 to 120µm. Beyond this range however, the recovery declines quite quickly. The reason for the decline in recovery observed with coarse particles can be traced to the effect of turbulence. Bubbles trapped in turbulent eddies rotate rapidly, and when the centrifugal force on a particle exceeds the retaining forces due to surface tension, the particle detaches. Since the centrifugal force varies as the cube of the diameter of the particle, and the attachment force varies simply as the diameter, being proportional to the length of the contact line, it is clear that detachment forces will predominate as the particle size increases. The corollary is that the recovery of coarse particles can be improved if the level of the turbulence in the cell can be reduced to a minimum. In this paper, a new type of flotation machine will be described, in which the particles to be floated are suspended in a fluidized bed. An up flow of fluidizing water is provided, by recycling liquid from the top of the cell. The recycle stream is aerated in a high-energy device that disperses the air into fine bubbles that capture the fines and ultrafines. Results are presented for several minerals and coarse coal. "A weathering-crust niobium-rare earth-bearing deposit is formed by the weathering alterationof alkaline granite, which is refractory due to its low grade and complex properties. The mineralogicalcomposition of ore, the grain size of majorminerals as well as the occurrence of Nb and REE are studied in this paper using MLA combined with traditional methods. According to the results, a wide range of Nb-Ti-REE compound minerals including titanoniobite, uranpyrochlore, chlopinite, samarskite and ilmenorutile areformed for the extensive isomorphous substitution among the elements of Nb, Ta, REE, Fe, Ti, U and Th. The occurrence of REE is extremely complex. First, the REEexistingas rare earth minerals including monazite, xenotime, bastnaesite,etcaccount for 21%. Second, the REEexist in the lattice of Nb and Zr minerals as isomorphous additions, which account for 18%. Third, the REE exist as colloidal rare earthdeposit,which account for 35%. Last, the REEexistingas ion-adsorption-type rare earth,which are adsorbedon the kaolinite in the form of hydrated hydroxyl ions, account for 26%.Based on the results of mineralogy, the combined technology process "mineral processing- hydrometallurgical separation" is needed to deal with the ore. The mineral processing tests show that, for the feed ore containing Nb2O5 0.065%, REO 0.13%, an Nb-REE concentrate containing Nb2O5 1.38%, REO 1.98% can be gained by "high intensity magnetic separation-regrinding-gravity separation by shaking tables". The recovery of Nb2O5 and REO is 62.42% and 44.78% respectively. The Nb-REE concentrate is dealt by the metallurgy process "direct reduction- acid leaching & acidulating- neutralization & precipitation- chlorination & distillation" and the rare earth oxide of 92.34% REO as well as the Nb-Zr oxide of 24.62% Nb2O5 can be obtained with the recovery of REO and Nb2O5 being 76.83% and 59.37% respectively."

The flocculation and dewatering behaviour of kaolinite (non swelling) and smectite (swelling) clay dispersions has been investigated using hydrolysable metal ions Mn(II) and Ca(II) and anionic polyacrylamide-acrylate copolymer (PAM) at pH 7.5 and 10.5. A pH-dependent, specific metal ion adsorption behaviour, accompanied by a marked reduction in particle zeta potential and slurry shear yield stress, was observed to have a profound influence on the colloid stability of both types of clays. Due to the differences in the cation exchange capacity, the smectite clay dispersion required a higher amount of metal ions than kaolinite dispersion to produce similar effects. The adsorption density of the anionic PAM at the negatively charged clay particle surfaces correlated well with metal ion hydrolysis and adsorption behaviour, all of which had a strong effect on slurry settling rate and extent of consolidation. At pH 7.5 where Mn(II) ions hydrolyse, metal ion and flocculant adsorption densities were both greater in the presence of Mn(II) than Ca(II) ions. At pH 10.5, however, where Ca(II) ions begins to hydrolyse, higher adsorption densities were observed for Ca(II) ions in comparison with Mn(II) ions, as the latter hydrolysed completely and precipitated. The metal ion mediated flocculant adsorption led to improved hydrogen bond driven particle bridging and facilitated charge neutralisation flocculation mechanisms which significantly enhanced the dewaterability of both clay dispersions.

"Evaluation of inequalities of the partial sums defining cumulative grade and recovery prove that cumulative grade has an upper bound not dependent on the bank number and cumulative recovery possesses an upper bound proportional to the bank number. This explains one observed characteristic of cumulative grade versus cumulative recovery curves. The existence of such maxima combined with the observed shape of cumulative grade-recovery curves leads us to postulate that these curves can be well described by rectangular hyperbolae. Rectangular hyperbolae are characterized by asymptotes at right angles to each other. It is proven that this property can be used to derive an equation for the cumulative mass flow of the concentrate in terms of the asymptotic values of cumulative grade and cumulative recovery. Fitting hyperbolae to experimental cumulative grade cumulative recovery plant data then results in estimates of the maximum grade, the maximum recovery and a constant which may be taken as a performance coefficient of a row. Normalization of the cumulative grade and the cumulative recovery by their respective maxima gives rise to a graphical representation that can be used to evaluate the operating performance of a row of floatation bank cells. The normalization procedure removes the bias that is introduced by inevitable variation in mass flow of the feed and variation in feed mineralogy or feed particle size distribution. Reduction of the normalized data collapses all cumulative grade-recovery data onto one and the same curve. This removes the differences caused by the variation in row performance. The reduced cumulative grade-recovery data scatters around a common hyperbola. This can be used to gauge the validity of the assumptions made. Normalized cumulative mass pull is determined from the fitted values of the maximum recovery and maximum grade. This may serve as an alternative performance indicator of the floatation row."

Column flotation has now gained wide application in the recovery of various minerals. The performance of the flotation device depends on the mixing characteristics of the phases inside the devices. In this work, quality of mixing in a flotation column has been analyzed by using information entropy theory. Empirical models have been developed for flotation column with the parameters which affect the quality of mixing. The efficiency of the particle separation in the flotation column has been enunciated based on the quality of mixing. The present analysis on the quality of mixing in flotation column may give insight into a further understanding and modeling of flotation devices in industrial applications.

Geopolymerisation has emerged during the last few years as an industrial and ecological approach to construction and waste management. By utilizing waste materials and their reactive properties, it is now possible to create geopolymers systems that not only mechanically durable enough to be used as construction materials but are also potential stable immobilisation systems for toxic waste. Previous studies by Van Jaarsveld et al. (1997) and Van Jaarsveld et al. (1998) have reported on the numerous applications of geopolymers in the immobilisation of toxic metals. Research into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as an encapsulation media for organic waste has however been rare. This paper therefore provides an insight into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as a binder for hazardous organic materials.

"In 1992, Ingeniería de Minerales started with the introduction of pneumatic flotation technology in Chile and South America. This technology consists of vertical cells and gyratory cells, used mainly under actual operational conditions, with pilot units directly installed in the concentrator circuits of the industrial process. Successful industrial applications have been observed at Los Pelambres, in the molybdenum plant; at Codelco Andina in the molybdenum plant as pre-rougher to produce directly a final concentrate; in the copper circuit at Las Luces as pre-rougher producing final concentrate using sea water; at Minera Valle Aconcagua where a full automatic plant produces pre-concentrate from fresh tailings as feed; at the silica and silicate reverse flotation circuit of Compañía Minera del Pacífico; in cleaning the final concentrate of Zn by reverse flotation removing ultrafine carbonate; and in a plant that reprocesses fresh tailings from a copper slag flotation process. Positive operational changes in the design of the flotation circuit have been seen in plants using G-cells and V-cells, improving the performance of flotation circuits and the quality of final products. The high concentration of bubbles and micro turbulence produced by the pneumatic aeration units provide a high probability of collision and attachment, reducing dramatically the residence time. Though it is a pneumatic flotation, no compressed air is needed, and the equipment is characterized by low maintenance costs, full automation, savings in investment and energy."

This paper describes the investigative studies carried out at Vale´s Center of Mineral Development (CDM) for a nickel sulfide deposit aiming to develop an adequate flotation flowsheet. The CDM facilities comprises of very well equipped laboratories to develop hydrometallurgical, comminution, flotation, physical separation processes, besides chemical and mineralogical laboratories, that are required to accomplish pre-feasibility studies, new process routes developments and, eventually, brownfield projects. Close association of the flotation group with the geometallurgy and the mineralogy teams play a key role during greenfield project development. Most of the information required by process engineers responsible for the flowsheet development can be provided by the mineralogy team and its mineralogical laboratory at CDM. During the flowsheet development of this nickel sulfide deposit, two ore types were identified as the most abundant in the deposit, named biotite-chlorite hydrothermalite (HID) and magnetite hydrothermalite (MAG HID). Six samples were selected for the investigative studies based on this initial information. Nickel grade varied from 0.39% to 1.95%. The main nickel-bearing minerals were millerite and pentlandite whereas the main non-sulphide gangue minerals were quartz, plagioclase, biotite, chlorite, actinolite, and/or magnetite. Electron microprobe (EMP) identified the presence of nickel in solid solution in gangue minerals such as biotite, chlorite, and actinolite. Nickel deportment in silicates varied from 3% to almost 40%. Magnesium was distributed in biotite and chlorite, except in sample MAG HID, in which talc was responsible for almost 50% of the Mg content. Liberation studies indicated that the optimum feed grind size was around 150µm and that pyrite occurred highly associated to the nickel sulfides. The flotation tests were planned based on the information provided by the mineralogical data. Rougher flotation tests indicated that the optimum P80 of the primary grind was 212µm for the HID type and 150µm for the MAG HID. From the reagents tested, amyl xanthate proved to be the most efficient in the recovery of the sulfides. In the MAG HID sample talc was well depressed by dosing 600g/t of CMC. Nickel recoveries in the rougher stage were lower than 90% due to the nickel distributed in silicates. However, sulfur recovery was around 95%, indicating high recovery of the total sulfides. Open circuit and locked cycle tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the regrind size in the nickel grade and recovery (P80 of 44µm and 20µm). Nickel recovery decreased from 70% to 65% when finer regrind size was tested. Although nickel recovery decreased by 5%, the finer regrind size lead to a higher Ni grade (from 11% to 23%Ni) and lower fluorine grade (from 1138ppm to 700ppm) in the concentrate. The value creation with kaolin clays depends on removing the colored impurities which manifests in to higher brightnessone of the most sought after properties on applications such as paper coating, paint and others. The processes for removing impurities include magnetic separation, froth flotation and selective flocculation. While the flotation and selective flocculation processes exploit the physico-chemical differences between the surface properties, the magnetic separation uses the bulk magnetic susceptibility differences between the diamagnetic clay and ferro- and para-magnetic nature of the impurities. The major advantage with magnetic separation remains high yield and no or low reagent usage. However, the magnetic separation technology suffers from low separation efficacy when finer colored impurities (<1 µm) are encountered in the feed. Use of stronger magnetic intensities during magnetic separation showed limited success; nonetheless the adverse effect due to finer size range remains a dominant effect even at 5 Tesla magnetic field. Furthermore, the presence of diamagnetic colored impurities irrespective of their sizes can not be removed. Cytec Industries has recently developed a ?bolt-on? chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation that essentially embraces the best product performance attributes of flotation and selective flocculation while keeping the chemical usage to a minimum level and using the readily available magnetic separation equipment. The paper will outline the technology and illustrate optimization work at pilot plant magnet on a wide variety of crude accommodating the process needs and plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation include: 1) simple extension to existing magnetic separation technology, 2) ability to produce comparable product in quality with cost effectiveness compared to flotation and selective flocculation, 3) removal of impurity minerals over wide size range, 4) removing non-magnetic impurities, 5) providing robust process with high process yield and 6) operation-friendly nature. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for re-moving impurities at low levels in other mineral systems as well.

The study is devoted to the earth's surface protection and is aimed at improving the ecological safety of the territories in the mining industry. Identification of the diagnostic signs and quantitative criteria for the disturbance of soil geochemical properties and water chemistry represent an important scientific task in anthropogenically disturbed landscapes in the context of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources. The study is aimed at geological and ecological analysis of the migration peculiarities of the man-caused chemicals and elements in soils and soil-surface water environment. We received new results. These results assist in estimating the peculiar features of distribution of heavy metals total and mobile forms (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb), depending on the physical and chemical parameters of the disturbed soils. We obtained the empirical relationships describing heavy metals localization and accumulation processes depending on buffer properties of soils (pH, N, Corg), salinization factor and contamination with oil products. Anthropogenic geochemical barriers spontaneously formed in the area of industrial facilities were revealed in the territories of industrial facilities. These barriers prevent the further distribution of elements and pollutants in the landscapes. This makes it possible to create their artificial analogues in order to limit further migration of pollutants and to immobilize valuable components. Analysis of diagnostic features of soils geoecological state and factors influencing the distribution of heavy metals in the soil-surface water geosystem allows the identification of the geochemical barrier type with the aim of elements immobilization in a limited area of the territory. We applied modern physical and chemical methods of analysis, a package of statistics programs in Excel and modeling techniques. The proposed approach is innovative and therefore can be attractive. The accumulation of useful components losses in mineral resources exploitation is a promising reserve for their recovery from the soil with specifically arranged properties. The methodology of this research is also promising for the prediction of the environmental emergencies of the anthropogenic nature. This is consistent with the requirements of state control of environmental safety in the course of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources.

In order to deal with the problems of existing comminution models a new approach towards the development of mechanistic models has been made so as to better understand the physics of milling processes and environments. Despite enormous improvement in this field a comprehensive study of rock breakage characterisation, appropriate for use in these types of models, is still scarce. This paper reviews the existing models of comminution according to ore characterisation techniques and parameters. The authors have looked into the existing testing methods and their applied mechanisms of breakage, using standard test results available at the JKMRC. The study includes classifying testing devices such as the drop weight tester, rotary breakage tester, slow compression, and piston and die based on the few major fundamental mechanisms of breakage that are experienced by rocks in the breakage process. The paper compares the range of particle size and energy utilisation, applied strain rates and loading mechanisms for the equipment. The product size distributions from the various equipment is compared for equivalent input energies, various loading rates but the same level of energy intensity, a broad range of energy including low energy utilisation and fines generation rate for equivalent specific energy input. The results clearly show that the outcomes and conclusions on competence and energy for breakage are a function of the test method that is applied. In ongoing work, it is proposed to investigate common tests that can be applied to characterising ores in a manner suited to modelling a range of comminution devices.

Coal preparation plants usually operate with water in a closed circuit mode. In this practice, large quantities of water is continuously being recycled. To compensate the natural losses, only small quantity of fresh make up water is added into the circuit. As a result, a gradual build up of residual concentrations of flotation reagents (frothers, collectors, coagulates etc.) take place in the water and the concentration levels of the contaminants increase. Besides, the recycled water accumulates higher amounts of total dissolved components (1600 ppm) and hardness (740 ppm) than the fresh water. Nearly 80 ? 85% of the process water used in a coal preparation plant is utilized in treating the coal fines in flotation circuit. The presence of certain alkali earth metal ions (e.g., Ca++, Mg++) may adversely affect the flotation performance as they precipitate sparingly soluble hydroxyl complexes on the coal surface and change its surface charge. These studies showed that the use of recycled water in flotation has a significant effect on the selectivity and kinetics of the flotation process because, the dissolved compounds, both inorganic and organic, alter the chemistry radically. By treating the recycled water through a softening process, the concentrations of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced significantly. The concentration of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced to 10 ppm and 35 ppm respectively in the softened recycle water. From the selectivity studies, it has been observed that the flotation yield and recoveries increased by four to seven units by softening the recycled water. The kinetic studies indicated that the clean coal particles followed first-order kinetics. The kinetic parameters namely, flotation rate constant (k) and maximum recoveries (R8) of flotation, were found higher with softened recycle water than the recycled water. This reduces the residence time in the flotation cell and thereby, increases its productivity. "Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"

Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.
