The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.

"In the differential metal sulfide ore flotation it is desirable to replace the toxic inorganic depressants with environmentally benign chemicals. Chitosan, as a natural and non-toxic polymer, has been proven to be an efficient depressant for chalcopyrite while allowing galena to be floated by xanthate collectors. However, the poor solubility of chitosan limits its potential applications as the flotation could only be carried out at about pH 4 where chitosan is soluble. A carboxymethyl derivative of chitosan, named N-carboxymethyl chitosan (N-CMC), was synthesized by substituting the amino groups of chitosan with carboxymethyl groups. The substitution significantly improved the solubility of chitosan. The structure of N-CMC was studied and compared with chitosan via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Flotation tests were performed on single minerals and mineral mixtures (with weight ratio of 1:1) with the addition of appropriate amount of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and N-CMC. The solution pH was varied from neutral to alkaline. The flotation concentrates and tailings were collected and analysed for the contents of copper and lead. FTIR measurements showed that new peaks of C=O stretching of -COOH and N-H deformation of -NH- appeared in N-CMC, which indicated that the carboxymethyl groups were introduced and the amino groups were the sites for the substitution. Flotation results indicated that N-CMC could depress either chalcopyrite or galena depending on the pH. The results were not affected by the sequence of KEX and N-CMC addition. Therefore, N-CMC is potentially useful in Cu-Pb sulfide separation following a bulk Cu-Pb flotation. The N-CMC was also found to have surface cleaning functions, and was able to remove contaminating copper ions from galena surfaces. Therefore, its application in sulfide ore flotation is expected to be more robust than the original chitosan."

In order to enhance the quality of iron concentrate from magnetic separation, reverse-flotation technology is often applied in an iron ore dressing plant.However, this technology has disadvantages in terms of operating cost,energy consumptionand environmental protection(Zhao, Wu& Wang,2005).Developing innovative equipment to process magnetite ore more-effectively is a way to get rid of these disadvantages of reverse flotation and improve the quality of iron concentrate.This paper describes the development of Complex Flashing-Field Magnetic Cleaner,a new kind of equipment based on the principle of combination of separation in magnetic field and separation in gravity field(Hao & Jiang, 2002).This innovative equipment possesses a tailor-made magnetic system and has the characteristics of a magneticfieldwhich can strengthen the formation of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of gangue mineralsto improvethe quality of separation.The automatic control system developed specifically for this equipment can further increase the accuracy of separation and stabilize the process.

The cohesive zone, where the ore fed into the blast furnace softens and melts, is critical to the blast furnace performance and stability due to its influence on the gas and solid flow. This paper de-scribes a project for the development of a process model to predict the cohesive zone properties and the results of its first step; the solid flow model. The process model is expected to describe a realistic solid burden flow and the formation of the cohesive zone, its shape, location, structure, permeability, and in particular the mineralogical changes within the cohesive zone. This will be achieved using various simulation and computing tools: a combination of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the DEM?CFD hybrid approach, together with models for the thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. The key benefits of the hybrid approach lie in the coupling of the continuous phase and the discrete particles, and the possibility of introducing thermodynamics and reaction kinetics into the system in a more realistic manner. Two DEM simulations are presented for a small scale blast furnace to investigate the influence of non-spherical particles on the solid flow. This influence can be observed from a more even solid flow pattern and a reduced deadman size. The results indicate the requirement to include non- spherical particles in a blast furnace simulation to achieve a realistic solid flow.

In conventional flotation machines, the recovery is strongly related to particle size. As particle size increases, the recovery also increases, reaching a maximum in the range 20 to 120µm. Beyond this range however, the recovery declines quite quickly. The reason for the decline in recovery observed with coarse particles can be traced to the effect of turbulence. Bubbles trapped in turbulent eddies rotate rapidly, and when the centrifugal force on a particle exceeds the retaining forces due to surface tension, the particle detaches. Since the centrifugal force varies as the cube of the diameter of the particle, and the attachment force varies simply as the diameter, being proportional to the length of the contact line, it is clear that detachment forces will predominate as the particle size increases. The corollary is that the recovery of coarse particles can be improved if the level of the turbulence in the cell can be reduced to a minimum. In this paper, a new type of flotation machine will be described, in which the particles to be floated are suspended in a fluidized bed. An up flow of fluidizing water is provided, by recycling liquid from the top of the cell. The recycle stream is aerated in a high-energy device that disperses the air into fine bubbles that capture the fines and ultrafines. Results are presented for several minerals and coarse coal. The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980.s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão - GO), Bunge (Cajati - SP), Fosfértil (Tapira - MG) and Copebrás (Catalão - GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

"Recent advances in technology and the growing environmental concern have laid emphasis on the usage of fine clean coal. Coal fines are also generated in large amounts during various coal processing operations and are difficult to be treated, handled and disposed. Since most of the operations use water as the carrying medium, the fines so generated contain lot of moisture. Conventional technique for processing coal fines includes flocculation by a polymeric reagent followed by moisture removal using a rotary drum or a pressure plate filter, which produce a product with more than 30% moisture. Polymeric flocculants though required in small amounts, need high shear mixing for good performance and operate only in a narrow pH range. Moreover they increase the viscosity of the solution by many folds. Hence it becomes imperative to emulate newer methods for efficient fine coal processing. One such method is the novel use of microorganisms in coal processing.The present investigation deals with the utilization of two gram-positive microorganisms, Mycobacterium phlei and Bacillus subtilis, as bio flocculants and dewatering aids in fine coal processing. Preliminary characterization done on J-coal and M.phlei showed that they are negatively charged over most of the pH range. B.subtilis was found to possess positive charge below pH 4.7. The adhesion studies proved the high potential of microorganisms for adsorption to surfaces. Adhesion tests were conducted at various experimental conditions by varying parameters like pH and ionic strength of the suspension. Results obtained showed that adhesion is always higher in the presence of an electrolyte like KNO3 and most of the adhesion takes place in 15 minutes. With change in pH the amount of B.subtilis adhering on to J-coal remained almost constant and for M.phlei it decreased at higher pH values. Increase in ionic strength did not increase the adhesion of bacteria. Flocculation experiments confirmed the ability of the bacteria to act as bio flocculants. It was seen that about 98% of the coal settled in about 2 minutes on the addition of bacteria along with the addition of the electrolyte. The electrolyte was found to be indispensable for efficient flocculation of the coal suspension and for the attainment of a clear supernatant after flocculation. Also the optical micrographs revealed the formation of large, tight flocs when the electrolyte is present along with the bacteria. Further, flocculation tests were done in the pH range of 2-10 and the flocculation efficiency was found to be independent of pH."

The paper discusses the experiences of a fast-track curriculum designed to provide the industry with engineers capable of working in minerals processing industry. The course has been done once before and the second course has been started. Students chosen have graduated from other fields of engineering. For the first course, twelve students were chosen from 152 applicants and for the second the twelve students were chosen from 96 applicants. The basic idea of the curriculum is to alternate between theoretical studies at the university and working experience periods at industrial sites. In addition, there are several one week assignment tasks at industrial sites. The theoretical periods are six to eight weeks long and there are three of them. During the first period, the teaching concentrates on unit processes and their chemical and physical background. The theme of the second period is mineral engineering systems; flowsheet development, process dynamics, control systems etc. The last theoretical period teaches environmental issues, leadership, project work and other similar topics. Each of the theoretical periods ends with an assignment week at industrial sites. The assignments are designed to wrap up the teachings of the period. For the industrial periods, the students are given learning goals, which have been discussed and designed with their industrial mentors. They are required to find relevant literature, make experimental designs, implement those designs, present the data, and make conclusions of their results. During these periods, a weekly meeting over the Internet is compulsory. In the article results of experiments over jaws? linings in jaw crushers with different shaping of working surface were presented. Following sets of jaws were under investigation: immobile plain jaw and moving jaw with grooving surface. Grooving jaws have groves with circular, triangular and trapezoid cross section. In order to evaluate efficiency of comminution both the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains were determined, as well as the size of crushing forces and process efficiency were measured. For the combination: plain jaw with grooved one, a good results were obtained as regards the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains. Crushing forces were higher at crushing with mixed types of jaws (the one plain, the second grooved), in comparison to crushing with using both grooved jaws. Efficiency of the process was definitely higher for mixed jaws.

The shortage of water supply in some regions of the globe is particularly problematic and forces mining companies to adopt alternatives like pumping sea water from the ocean up to the mining sites. Although deaeration of sea water or the use of lined pipelines are known options to prevent corrosion during pumping, a recent development of a new corrosion inhibitor allowed the use of simple mild steel pipelines for this purpose. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the recent advances of this technology in protecting against not only general corrosion but localized corrosion, main cause of corrosion-related pipeline failures. Corrosion studies were carried out using electrochemical techniques, weight loss balance as well microscopy surface analysis in order to measure and therefore evaluate the treatment efficiency. The right dosage of corrosion inhibitors may vary depending on water composition and characteristics of each system. Differences were observed depending on the sea water source. Pretreatment of metallic surface impacts the observed corrosion rate which can be as low as 3.6 mpy. The absence of pitting or localized corrosion was achieved in aerated seawater.

"INTRODUCTIONMetals losses amount up to 50% in coarse fractions in (>100 µm) and composite particles, and to 20- 25% in fine fractions (<10 µm) at non-ferrous floatation concentrating plants of the CIS. Therefore, reduction of metals losses in difficult fractions is of high significance.IMPROVEMENT OF FLOATABILITY OF COARSE AND COMPOSITE PARTICLESReagent regimes with application of strong collectors – xanthates ?5-?8, combination of butyl xanthates and aerofloats ?10-?12, butyl xanthates with hydrocarbons are proposed for this purpose. Application of such reagent regimes for copper and copper-molybdenum ores permitted to increase copper and molybdenum recovery by 0.5-3.9%.Studies, performed by means of specially designed non-frothing flotation machine with independently controlled agitation intensity and narrow size-ranges of air bubbles, established that the best results are achieved with employment of bubbles of 0.5-0.8 mm size regarding particles of any size, with small amounts of up to 2 mm size “transport” bubbles to be expediently used for floatation of coarse particles.Energy dissipation in the main volume of floatation cells must be lower than 0.2-0.25 m2/s3.Performed experiments permitted to formulate requirements to development of machine for floatation of coarse and composite particles. Such floatation machine with volume of 8.5 m3 provided for weak agitation in the main volume of floatation cell and uniform distribution of coarse particles throughout the depth owing to establishing of pulp circulation with upward flows. In addition, in the upper part of floatation cell where agitation is considerably weaker, favorable conditions are created for attachment of particles to bubbles. Testing of this floatation machine demonstrated a 7.5% increase in recovery of +0.2 mm particles in pyrite floatation and a 12-14% increase in recovery of +0.2 mm particles in apatite floatation as compared with a reference floatation machine."

"In this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 - 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 - 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 - 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration.For gold recovery from the pregnant solution, the trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) was used in this investigation as an extractant to extract gold from thiosulfate solution without pH and other adjustments. The effects of gold concentration, pH, ammonia, thiosulfate and cupric ionic concentrations, extractant and diluent concentrations and retention time on the gold recovery were investigated. It was found that 180 mol/m3 extractant diluted with n-octant at O/A ratio of 1:1 could extracted the 100% of gold in 0.6 ks from the thiosulfate solution at the optimal leaching conditions. The 100% gold stripping could be achieved with 10% thiourea solution."

Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial waste from the production of phosphate fertilizer. The utilization of PG is restricted by its containing impurities, and the pretreatment is crucial to eliminating these impurities. The purpose of the research is to recycle pretreatment PG as raw material for preparation of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (a-HH) by salt solution method. The effect of pretreatment technologies of lime neutralization and washing on dehydration rate, phase composition and morphology evolution of a-HH were investigated by crystal water content analysis, XRD and SEM. Furthermore, the change of pH in the reaction process was also discussed in detail. The results show that the dehydration rate of conversion PG to a-HH increases and the corresponding induction period, crystal growth period and total time decrease with an increase in CaO dosage from 0.2% to 0.6%. In the presence of 0.4% CaO or 0.6% CaO, the a-HH presents a long hexagon-prism-shaped crystal with a purity of 94%, and the end face of a-HH presents polyhedron. The system pH sharply decreases with the reaction time under different CaO dosage, and the pH variation from the initial alkalinity to acidity. The main reason is that as the co-crystallized phosphorus dissolved and released HPO42-, and with the pH decreasing to 4-5, HPO42- transformed into H2PO4-. The dehydration rate of washing PG is lower than that of original PG. Compared with the original PG, a-HH with the larger width and smaller aspect ratio can be achieved from the pretreatment PG subjected to lime neutralization and washing, meanwhile the crystal surface is more smooth.

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. The North-West Russia for 70 years is one the main producers of Cu, Ni, Co, Al, P, REE, Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Fe ores and other minerals in the Europe. The largest mining companies locates in the Murmansk region, and they extracts about 100 mln. tons of ores and damps up to 250 mln. tons of waste annually. Nevertheless an environmental situation in the region is stable due to rational management and treatment of wastes on a base of the Noosphere Concept for Nature-using suggested by Vladimir Vernadsky. The Concept was performed practically in the Fersman’ scheme of “non-waste mining and metallurgical complex”, published in the monograph “Minerals of the Kola Peninsula: current status – analyses – prognoses” (1941) and served till now as a sort of “Bible” for industry managers lightening a strategy for an industrial “trophic chain”. The recent status of this scheme is shown on the picture below, and one can see that our concept is coincide with modern ideology known as the “Industrial Ecology”. Moving along this mainstream in the Kola Peninsula since 1929, when the first mining company “Apatit” was established, we provided the water close circuit in mineral dressing plants, hydrometallurgical treatment of slag and tailings, productions of building materials and adsorbents of wastes. The innovation set of technologies designed by the Kola Science Centre allow recently to involve tailing damps in re-exploitation as the technogenic deposits of valuable raw materials for fertilizers, tanning and cleaning agents, pigments, concretes and etc.

In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

The response of the air/water interfaces to deformation in presence of surfactants is affected by the adsorption/desorption rate, re-orientation and exchange rate of surfactant. These surface properties can be observed using equilibrium and dynamic surface tension and surface elasticity measurements. However, the effect of these parameters on bubble size in dynamic conditions has not been studied due to the difficulty in capturing freshly formed bubbles in dynamic conditions. The paper presents a new experimental set-up designed and built at the Aalto University, called Shear Force Observation Chamber(SOC). The setupallows the monitoring and analysisof freshly formed air/liquid interfaces in dynamic conditions and facilitates the study of the effect of dynamic surface tension and surface elasticityon freshly formed air bubblesin presence of surfactants. The method helps to establish correlation between bubble size and dynamic interfacial properties and bubble-bubble interaction in turbulent flow. Dowfroth 200, Nasfroth 240 and Dowfroth 250 commercial flotation frothers were tested in this study. The results show a marked difference between results obtained in dynamic conditions compared to the static conditions. The results are presented and the reasons and implication to flotation modelling are discussed in the paper. Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.
