An experimental study on interparticle breakage of three iron ores was carried out by compressive stressing of particle-bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing were five narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.2~3.2 mm respectively and a wide size fraction of 0/4.0 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 360 MPa. The results show that the energy absorption of the particle bed increases linearly with the pressure; the increase of the product fineness with the pressure declines as the pressure goes up; and the product size distributions resulting from interparticle breakage of different narrow size fractions have no self-similarity. Using data obtained from the piston-die compressive stressing test, the suitability of a previously-developed material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for these ores. It is shown that the particle-bed compression test conducted with piston-die device in lab-scale may provide a cost-effective way of studying and modelling size-reduction of ore materials by interparticle breakage.

"Bacteria that grow in autochtonous communities of gold heap leaching (HL) wastes are adapted to high concentrations of contaminants and environmental conditions. An example of a mine in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic showed that the bacterial factor had a significant influence on cyanide breakdown and copper and nickel removal in the conditions of HL ore pile zoning compared to chemical oxidation. The diversity of bacterial communities growing in natural and simulated conditions of a HL ore pile was determined for the purpose of the study. The identified bacterial communities included genus Achromobacter and Serratia, which were found to be adapted to a wide range of temperature and can be considered as potential microorganisms for detoxification of gold HL wastes. INTRODUCTION Technologies and systems of passive treatment are of a special interest in relation to solving environmental problems of gold HL wastes detoxification, when neutralization time is not considered as a limitation (Alvarez et al. 2005). Passive treatment methods are based on reagentless spontaneous breakdown of cyanide caused by natural factors, including activity of autochthonous bacterial communities. Implementation of a reagentless biodetoxification technology for mature HL operations provides reduction of environmental impact on industrial site locations and substantial economic benefits compared to conventional chemical processes of neutralization that prevail in the Russian Federation territory. Passive treatment of cyanide-containing wastes was investigated by M. Botz, T. Mudder, S.V. Petrov, L. Simovic, A. Smith, C.A. Young etc. However, the bacterial factor (autochtonous bacterial communities) role in this process is practically unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study included the investigation of a bacterial factor influence on passive treatment of gold HL wastes and the identification of functional groups of bacteria involved in passive treatment."

"Graphite has unique properties such as high thermal resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good thermal and electrical conductivity, and is often utilized as coating materials for electrical conductors, TV Brown tubes, electromagnetic shields, and so on. Additionally, its excellent lubrication property is widely used in oil and solid lubricants. Finely ground graphite particles in the sub-micron range are commonly used for these applications.Sub-micron fine graphite particles are typically prepared in liquids by vibration ball mills. However, it is known that the wet process takes long periods of grinding time like 24 hours or more and requires a series of subsequent highenergy operations such as de-watering, drying, regrinding and classification. On the other hand, there would be numerous advantages if fine grinding could be done effectively in dry atmosphere. However, since crystalline graphite has a layered structure giving a high lubrication property, its dry grinding, especially when obtaining sub-micron size particles, is extremely difficult. The shape of the graphite particles is also important for its utilization since particles with flaky shape can maintain relatively high electrical and thermal conductance as well as lubrication ability. Therefore, it would be necessary to reduce the size of graphite particles into fines with flaky shape while grinding proceeds. Dry grinding characteristics of natural graphite under various atmospheric conditions with gases using different mills were studied, and fine flaky particles by grinding the graphite intercalation compounds and the exfoliated graphite were produced. However, there were no sufficient investigations on the size reduction of natural graphite at low atmospheric pressures in attritional milling conditions. The main purpose of this paper is to provide sub-micron fine grinding characteristics of natural crystalline graphite at various degrees of low atmospheric pressure, and to discuss the size reducing models in an attrition mill"

"The uranium deposit Curilo located in Western Bulgaria for a long period of time was a site of intensive mining activities including both the open-pit and underground mining techniques as well as in situ leaching of uranium. The ore was rich in pyrite and, apart from uranium, contained some non-ferrous metals. The mining operations in the deposit were ended in 1990 but since that time the deposit is a permanent source of acid drainage waters. The generation of these waters is connected mainly with the oxidation of pyrite and other sulphide minerals by the indigenous acidophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria.Laboratory and pilot-scale studies revealed that an efficient clean-up of the above-mentioned waters was achieved by means of passive systems of the wetland type. In 2001 a wetland was constructed in the deposit to treat a portion of the acid drainage waters which were discharged to a small ravine. This ravine reaches into the Teina, a small river that is a tributary of the upper reaches of the Iskar river.The wetland was constructed in the ravine and its bottom was located on intrusive rocks with a very low permeability. The rocks were covered by a 30 – 50 cm layer consisting of a mixture of soil, plant compost and crushed limestone. The wetland was characterized by an abundant water and emergent vegetation and a diverse microflora. Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia and Phragmites australis were the prevalent plant species in the wetland but species of the genera Juncus, Eleocharis, Carex and Poa as well as different algae were also well present.The acid drainage waters treated by the wetland had a pH in the range of about 2.5 – 4.1 and contained uranium, radium, some heavy metals (iron, manganese, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The watercourse through the wetland covered a distance of about 0.2 – 1.0 l/s."

In India, bauxite deposits are concentrated in Central India, Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. Bauxites from various regions in Gujarat were identified during the present investigations of geochemical mapping. Different types of Bauxites samples were collected from Kachchh, Jamnagar, Porbunder, Junagarh, Bhavnagar and Amreli areas of Gujarat state and were studied in detail for their geochemical signatures to plot the data on Geochemical map. Raw bauxites were characterized by using powder XRD, XRF, ICP and optical microscopy techniques (with the help of Model microscope having both transmitted and reflected light setups) and were later examined to grade their quality. Most of the bauxites from Kachchh region were of high-grade (gibbsitic) type; while those of Sourashtra region were of low-grade (lateritic / calcitic) types. Most of these bauxites were either of ferruginous/lateritic or of calcareous/calcitic types. Based on the mineralogical composition, such as gibbsite, hematite and/or goethite, Kaolinite and calcite minerals present in particular bauxites, the deposits were graded. Finally, the Geochemical mapping of Bauxites for Gujarat region was prepared and discussed.

The biggest chromium mineral processing plant in Albania is Bulqiza plant. It has been in operation for more than 20 years, treating low-grade chromium ores grade 20 ? 26 % Cr2O3 and producing chromium concentrates grade 48 ? 50 % Cr2O3. About 2 million tons of tailings with 13 % Cr2O3 content are stocked in a dam close to the plant. Mineral processing of low-grade chromium ores with less than 16% Cr2O3 content is unprofitable because the mining expenses are high comparing with the current market prices of chromium concentrate. Recycle and enrichment of existing tailings is profitable, because there are no underground mining expenses in this case and because that this kind of raw material does not need expenses operation of crushing and grinding. The existing plant is in operation for more than 8 years treating existing tailings as raw material. Grade of concentrate in the value 40 % Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 recovery in the value 30-35% in the plant are considered low. The main reason of low concentrate grade and recovery is high content of particles under 100 microns, the slimes, in raw material. In the paper is described the study carried out to improve enrichment of the tailings, as well as analyses of existing process, raw material and products. It is concluded that majority of lost is present in the slimes which are not separated in existing spiral separators and shaking tables. Basing in the study is composed the new flow sheet of recycling and concentration of the tailings to produce chromium concentrate grade 41 ? 42 % Cr2O3 and recovery 60 %, decreasing in this way the concentrate production cost two times. In the paper are presented the tests and results of concentration of particle size fraction under 100 microns, using gravimetric, magnetic and flotation methods, as well as equipment and machines suitable for slimes treatment and concentration.

Experiment results and operation practice on reutilizing old tailings dumped at SCIM (Shang-chang Iron Mine) of KISCO (Kunming Iron and Steel Corp.) are presented. In a production period over 30 years SCIM dumped about 8 million tons of iron ore tailings. For improving resources utilization instead of wasting, experiments on processing for reutilization of the old tailings are con-ducted. These tailings are fine size fractions of weathered iluvial ores rejected out by classification- des-liming in ore washing and dressing processes, containing TFe 21%~22% in hematite mainly and limonite occasionally. Their particle size distribution, in average, is of 72.26% minus 0.037mm and 30.88% minus 0.005mm. Existence of plenty of micro-fine particles makes the tailings refractory to process, resulting in poor metallurgy. The whole sample of the old tailings without size-classification is fed into experimental process. Slon-100 type high grads WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separator) with cyc-pulsing is adopted, which magnetism-focusing rod?s diameter is changed from 3mm into 2mm. Operational conditions of optimizing rougher separation tests are strengthened. An iron concentrate assaying 52.21% Fe at quantity rate of 18.39% and iron recovery of 44.40% is obtained. Operational practice shows that metallurgy and economy of the old tailings treatment are close to what achieved at experiments. It is estimated, therefore, that some 1.4 million tons of this iron concentrate may be recovered from the old tailings. This means that KISCO has moved its key one-step in re-mining and reutilizing the secondary resources, which would be a good demonstration in this industry. This is also of social and economic significance in response to China government?s request on reducing consumption of resources and establishing society with economy for achieving sustainable development.

"The use of ultrasonic in industrial processes has increased during the last few years. Ultrasonic vibrations are used in sieving, grinding, ore washing, cleaning, and flotation in mineral industry. There are also some attempts for the utilization of ultrasonic treatment in separation and removal of fine particles from gases and liquids. In Kalemaden A.S. (Turkey) four different types of clay mixtures (1. A mixture of clays from Balikesir-Düvertepe and Istanbul-Sile, 2. A mixture of clays from Ukrania and Balikesir-Düvertepe, 3. Sögüt-Kadikelimesi, 4. A mixture of clays from Sögüt and Istanbul-Sile) and kaolin from Balikesir-Düvertepe (Turkey) are concentrated before their use in ceramic production. Dewatering is the important step in those types of concentration plants. Sedimentation of concentrated clay has always been difficult and taken long times due to their nature and having small particle sizes. Flocculants can be used to enhance the sedimentation, but they are not preferred by the ceramic industry since they affect the quality of ceramic products. For this purpose, ultrasonic treatment is used in the sedimentation of clays mentioned above for solving the problems encountered related to the ceramic industry and promising results were obtained.Kaolin sample, subjected to this experimental study, from Balikesir-Düvertepe region of Turkey was brought from the plant as a pulp in containers and throughly mixed with a stirrer before sedimentation experiments. A two liter graduated cylinder and an ultrasonic bath (with 25 kHz frequency and 0.5 KW power) were utilized in the tests. Superfloc A-120 (1% concentration) was used as a flocculant. The settling distance was reported against the settling time during the experiments. Initial and final pulp densities were also determined. The effects of several parameters such as pulp density, flocculant addition, and ultrasonic treatment on the sedimentation of kaolin were investigated and the results are represented in terms of settling distance versus settling time."

"One of the oldest mining areas in the World exist in Africa and the Middle East. This area is being exploited by foreign and local mining entities. Several large plants, both foreign and local as well as small operators, conduct their mining business on a scale which would be could be prohibited in any other part of the world. Relatively recent European disaster with tailing disposal and breakout has highlighted the problem.More important to the author is that the presence of foreign entities in zones which have not remedied the situation but has heightened the concern due to those entities using similar outrageous methods in treatment of waste. The abject misuse of technology cannot be permitted to continue and the lack of any metallurgical knowledge in the treatment of gold ores is considered deplorable for the majority of third world countries.The destruction of cyanide is simple and straightforward and requires no special skills. In South America, we developed a system that is modular, compact and can be operated in batch mode to cater for several clients, as required. Larger installations would require a separate module, as treatmentwould be on a continuous basis."

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement. Among these, MLAs (Gu, 2003) provided by JKMRC (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center) is critically acclaimed all over the world. This analysis system can measure mineral phases composition and content, particles size, minerals occurrence and liberation degree directly."

"The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

In this study, a hydrometallurgical treatment involving solvent extraction of zinc using D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) has been investigated to recover zinc from an industrial zinc leach residue. The residue was leached with sulfuric acid producing leach liquor which was subjected to solvent extraction for enrichment of zinc and removal of impurities. Operating variables for the zinc extraction process, such as pH of the mixed solution (0.5~5.0), concentration of D2EHPA (5%~40%, w/w), temperature (25~60°?C), A/O volumetric phase ratio (1/2~4/1), concentration of tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier (3%~7%, w/w), concentration of NaR2RSOR4R in aqueous phase (0.05M, 0.1M, 0.2M) were also studied. Practically all zinc was extracted from the aqueous solution at pH 2.5 with 20% w/w D2EHPA in kerosene. At this operating condition, zinc could be extracted at one theoretical stage at A/O phase ratio of 1/1, as calculated by the McCabe-Thiele method.

In this research bioleaching or extraction of iron present in a kaolin from La Virgen mine, Anti-oquia/Colombia, was carried out. Organic acids produced in SF with Aspergillus niger were used in the process. The fermentation process was carried out in 3 L aerobic stirred bioreactors, at a temperature of 30 °C, a stirrerd speed of 700 rpm, an initial pH of 4 and a fermentation time variable between one to 8 days, obtaining broth fermentation samples daily per bioreactor. For iron extraction, fermented broth from second to sixth day of fermentation was evaluated and it was found that the fermentation broth of the third day showed a larger potential for iron removal, 786 ppm, by using kaolin with an initial iron content of 1401 ppm. A set of tests using commercial organics acids such as citric acid and oxalic were carried out because those were found in the fermentation broth and it was found that oxalic acid presented three times more iron removal than citric acid.

"The present paper contains study results of gold morphology and grain size distribution in flotation concentrates produced from original ore samples from deposits of different genesis. Pre-concentration methods were used with selective dissolution of rock minerals and mineral heavy medium separation to obtain statistically valid data on gold grain size and morphology in concentration products. Special attention is given to study of flash flotation concentrates that is mainly used for coarse gold, underextracted in gravity circuit. Analysis of geometrical optics has allowed to establish that during flash flotation gold grains more than 150 µm can be extracted from 10 to 35%, and in some cases single gold grains above 300 µm. INTRODUCTION Distinctive features of gold that have a significant impact, and in some cases, decisive influence on its recovery into saleable products are mineral shape, grain size and morphology of metal particles, paragenetic associations of gold. Peculiar feature of coarse gold is its easy extraction during grinding from associated mineral components like quartz, sulphide and other and almost complete recovery into gravity concentrates (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Morphology of native gold is so diverse that different gold grains are better extracted using different methods of concentration. Compacted and rounded particles are easily processed using gravity concentration but low cyanidable and hard to process using flotation. On the contrary, lamellar, flake, dendrite and capillary aggregates of high specific surface are easily cyanidable and under definite conditions it has strong floatability (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Flotation of gold-containing sulphide minerals and free gold takes place simultaneously during flotation concentration. In case of low-sulphide ores, native gold takes the basic load, having the high density (15.6 to 18.3 g/cm3, for pure gold – 19.3 g/cm3) it has limited size and morphology for successful flotation. It is known that flake gold and fine-grained gold up to 0.1 mm are easily extracted (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Authors of the present paper performed a study of gold granulometry and morphology in flotation concentrates produced from gold-containing ores from two deposits of different types: gold-copper oxidized hematite ores and low-sulphide gold-quartz ores. Ores are different by both host rock composition, mineralogical and petrographic features, gold grade in mineral assemblage and morphology and size of precious metal. Common for both ore types is low-sulphide content and presence of free gold."

China is rich in iron ore resources, but most of these ores are low-grade, polymetallic and refrac-tory ones. Furthermore, with the rapid development of chinese iron & steel industry, the comprehen-sive recovery of these ores is becoming more and more important. The tin, zinc-containing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones, and great reserves of them are found in China. At present, they have not been efficiently utilized. In this paper, based on the investigation of basic physicochemical properties of the tin, zinc-bearing iron concentrates, taken from a mineral processing plant, the mineralogy reason that these concentrates are so intractable and refractory is found out, using advanced microscopic testing methods, such as optical microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), etc. It is found that the symbiotic relationship of iron, tin and zinc metallic minerals are very complicated, and magnetite in the concentrate is closely symbiotic or enwrapped by fine cassi-terite and sphalerite. So it is difficult to separate tin and zinc completely from the iron concentrates by simple regrinding and physical separation method. This investigation provides theoretical guid-ance for developing new approaches for utilizing these concentrates.

Deposit of Jinbaoshan platinum group metals (PGMs) ore ranks the second in Yunnan province, China. Study on process mineralogy shows that the grade of copper and nickel in the ore is just 0.16% and 0.20% respectively. Moreover, the impurities magnesium and iron and silicon are rich in the ore. The copper and nickel sulfides in the ore, especially the minerals of PGMs, are finely disseminated with the gangues like serpentine. Fine grinding is necessary, and high content of MgO in the concentrate is inevitable through traditional flotation technology on the basis of process mineralogy studies. Achievements on process mineralogy studies are applied to guide the flotation tests successfully. Progress on flotation has been made through comprehensive studies. Suitable grinding by two stages is required for the finely disseminated PGM sulphide ore to achieve the liberation of valuable minerals. Stage grinding and stage separation shall be conducted for a better recovery of valuable minerals. The oxidation state of mineral surface of sulphides has a profound effect on flotation of the ultra-fine sulphides, especially the pentlandite. The combined use of collectors enhances the selective collecting on the ultra-fine and low-grade valuable minerals, is of critical importance.

"Current empirical Semi Autogneous Grinding (SAG) mill models contain assumptions concerning the amount of energy available for particle breakage, how this energy is distributed in the mill media and the rate at which the energy is transferred. Despite these assumptions the JK SAG model is highly functional with a proven track record. DEM provides a numerical framework to greatly improve on these assumptions that were necessary due to a lack of available input data.This paper identifies key outputs of the Discrete Element Method (DEM), such as energy spectra and impact probability distribution. It describes how they can be incorporated into current mill models utilising practical rock breakage data. The rate at which energy is transferred is shown to be dependent on particle position and mill rotational speed and not once per cycle as previously assumed. Based upon this an improved energy transfer methodology is presented. The fundamental outputs of the DEM are validated against experimental three-dimensional particle tracking data, so as to establish whether the DEM produces correct energy transfer predictions on the inter-particle level, which is crucial to this work. • Effective Experimental ValidationAn automated 3D tracking technique is employed to study the motion of plastic particles deep within the charge of a 142mm diameter experimental mill. A Biplanar Angioscope is used to film the mill with X-rays in two planes simultaneously at 50 frames/s, with a shutter speed of 1/3000s. A marked ball within the charge is tracked for over 2 minutes and the resulting digital images processed by a fully automated imaging technique, which locates the 3D coordinates of the particles to within 0.2mm. With over 250 circulations, this provides statistically rigorous and accurate data for verification in the numerical modelling of mills.A series of validation techniques have been developed to compare the experimental trajectory data with the outputs of both 2D and 3D DEM simulations. The techniques describe the shape of the charge and the particle motion within mill, allowing objective comparisons to be made of key features of the charge, such as the equilibrium surface and the centre-of-circulation."

"Comminution not only is the major energy cost in mineral processing but it also can limit the grade of ores that can economically be processed. Rittinger first postulated that the energy for comminution is proportional to the new surface produced. Because most of the strain energy needed to initiate and propagate cracks in particles cannot be recovered, researchers reported woefully low comminution efficiencies. Recognizing this, Schoenert proposed that the baseline for assessing comminution efficiency should be the mechanical energy needed to break single particles. After extensive single-particle studies, Schoenert turned to comminuting beds of particle in piston dies. Finding particle-bed comminution to be energy efficient, he had the brilliant conception of making the process continuous, namely his invention of the choke-fed high-pressure roll mill (HPGR). Practical comminution involves masses of particles, which can lead to energy efficiencies far less than that of single-particle breakage. A three-way classification of grinding modes in terms of the mobility of the particle mass provides the necessary insight into the low efficiency of different comminution machines: namely, single-particle breakage, confined particle-bed grinding (HPGR), and loose-bed grinding (ball mill). Examples are given for determining and comparing comminution efficiencies. The size distribution of comminuted products become self-similar, and a single parameter, the median size, can be used to quantify the extent of comminution. The reduction ratio, expressed in terms of the mean size of the feed and product, varies linearly with expended energy and the slope of such plots is a measure of the grindability of the mineral. This approach clearly gives the order of energy efficiency as single-particle > particle-bed > loose-bed comminution. HPGRs are more efficient at low reduction ratios but lose that advantage at higher reduction ratios. Extensive hybrid grinding experiments carried out with our instrumented ball mill and HPGR showed significant energy savings by first comminuting the material in the HPGR and followed by the ball mill. At Cerro Verde an industrial-scale hybrid HPGR/ball mill system is reported to have a 13 percent energy savings over a SAG mill/ball mill system."

"Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

"It is well documented that xanthate adsorption on sulphide minerals is electrochemically controlled process. Under well controlled potential conditions the adsorption of xanthate takes place at different potential on each mineral, hence, each mineral component can be selectively separated from ore. This was demonstrated in the past for single mineral systems. In real flotation this concept never works out for two reasons: the potential of single mineral particle results from its interaction with solution as well as from galvanic contact with other particles present in the flotation pulp. Thus, the potential of a single particle results from complex surface reactions controlled by solution chemistry and the presence of other mineral particles that also interact with the solution. In flotation it is not possible to control mineral particle potential as it was demonstrated in voltametric studies of single mineral.In this study adsorption of xanthate on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite has been investigated in the presence of those minerals. The second mineral was in solution: (i) without any physical contact with the first one, (ii) in direct contact (non-liberated grain or connected by wire), (iii) in collision type contact similar to that observed in real flotation.The adsorption of amyl xanthate on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite was monitored by infrared external reflection technique directly on mineral surfaces. Type of the adsorbed species and their amount were concluded from the recorded reflection spectra. The presence of second mineral in solution without any physical contact does not influence adsorption. The minerals behave as if they were separated (at least during 30 min of the experiment). However, any type of galvanic contact between grains of two different minerals has tremendous consequence on the adsorption of collector on the both minerals. The detected changes are dramatic, from no adsorption to a few monolayer coverage formation.For example, pyrite that adsorbs amyl xanthate strongly in single mineral system in its galvanic contact with galena practically shows no adsorption of the collector in the same solution conditions. On contrary adsorption of xanthate on galena is tremendously enhanced during the galvanic contact with pyrite. The observed changes in the surface reactions are discussed and mechanisms of xanthate interactions in different galvanic contact are proposed."
