"Over the past few years CSIRO Minerals has been conducting research aimed at developing a continuous copper converting process to replace the traditional two-stage batch process that is currently used to produce blister copper. Sirosmelt type reactors and calcium-ferrite (lime-based) slags have been used rather than the conventional iron silicate slags. The research work has now been extended to focus on the development of a single-stage continuous copper making process (so-called direct copper converting) in which copper concentrates are converted to low-sulfur blister copper in a single step, that is the smelting and converting steps occur in one continuous stage.One feature of the direct copper converting process is that copper losses to the slag phase can be high, meaning the slag produced needs to be treated to recover the copper value. The feasibility of the whole copper making process will most likely depend on the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the copper recovery stage. Flotation has been identified as the most economical option to recover the copper from direct copper converting slags where it has been estimated that a copper recovery from the slag of above 90% is required to make the overall single stage copper making process economically feasible.A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. Copper sulfide concentrates from MIM were used as feed-stocks. The objectives of this work were to develop a robust flotation process to maximise the copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process, and to establish operating conditions for future continuous flotation pilot plant trials.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu and the CaO/Fe ratio varied between 0.30 and 0.54. In general, the higher the copper content the more oxidised the slag. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases. Reagent additions were typically 200 g/t KEX and 500 g/t Na2S.9H2O and the grind size was generally a P80 of about 40 µm."

South Africa has extensive mineral processing and extractive metallurgy capacity and infrastructure for metal production from natural resources. Decreasing ore grades, increasing labor costs, and more stringent legislation have made economic metal production from primary resources challenging. Opportunities exist for metal production from secondary resources such as mining wastes and end-of-life consumer goods. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the current status of metal production from secondary resources in South Africa and to identify potential opportunities for further development. Two main classes of secondary resources, namely mining waste and electronic waste, were considered. Primary metal producers are dominating metal production from mining wastes; several of the gold, platinum and chrome producers operate low risk and low cost tailings retreatment facilities that contribute significantly to their overall production. Further opportunities exist in, for example, the treatment of more than 450 estimated gold tailings dumps in Gauteng, as well as metal recovery from slags and furnace dust. The majority of companies involved with electronic waste recycling in South Africa focus on collecting and disassembling; only a few perform preliminary physical processing, with the recovered fractions then being sent overseas for metal recovery. Projections are that the rate of waste generation will increase significantly and that treatment will become critical to comply with more stringent environmental legislation. Projects related to process development, techno-economic evaluations and environmental impact studies for metal recovery from batteries, printed circuit boards, and fluorescent lamps are underway. South Africa is ideally positioned to further explore opportunities for synergistic relations between metal recyclers and primary metal producers. Processing of electronic waste for production of technology metals, for which limited natural resources exist in South Africa, would be a key enabler for local manufacturing industries and expansion of the value chain.

The consumption of aggregates in civil construction has increased considerably in Brazil for the last years. The extraction of sand and gravel generates significant environmental impacts. As the quarries and sand deposits are getting exhausted near the big cities, the price of aggregates is increasing. Meanwhile, the extraction of quartzite (dimensional stone) in the state of Minas Gerais has been done mostly in small quarries, with very low recovery, generating approximately six million tons of wastes a year, which causes pollution, increases final prices of products, decreases the life time of quarries and ends up in the closure of enterprises. The government agencies and the quarries’ owners understand that only by finding applications to wastes there will be development to the sector. The aim of this investigation was to study the application to the quartzite wastes as aggregate in the civil construction. Samples of quartzite wastes collected in a quarry were characterized by petrographic analyses. Laboratory tests of crushing and grinding were done to analyze the viability of reducing the size of coarse material to a finer one to be used as raw material in industrialized mortars and concrete pre-molded components.

"The potential of Fe(NO3)3 modified attapulgite was assessed for the adsorption of phosphorous removal from aqueous solutions. Natural attapulgite was modified by Fe(NO3)3, and thus the composite adsorption materials could be obtained. Also phosphorous adsorption characterization on the iron-coated attapulgite was investigated in this research. Taken overall the results suggested that phosphorous adsorption capacity could be improved markedly by adopting ferric modified-attapulgite. The optimum phosphorous adsorption were developed in the experimental conditions of the solid-to-liquid Ratio 1g/L, the initial phosphorous concentration 5 mol•L-1, reaction time 120 min, temperature 25 ? and pH=4.0, the removal efficiency is 92.28% for the modified attapulgite. In comparison of batch experimental results of phosphorous adsorption onto natural and iron-coated attapulgite, it has provided much more likely the same change trend. On the other hand, the outcomes of this analysis indicated that ferric modified adsorbent was notably influenced by adsorption element over natural attapulgite. The Freundlich isotherm adequately described the adsorption course of phosphorous onto ferric modified-attapulgite with the correlation coefficient R2 goodness of fit of 0.9690."

In the recent past, a paradigm shift in terms of resource utilization and beneficiation practices is experienced by the Indian mining and mineral sector. Depleting iron ore reserves coupled with increasing demand for low-alumina iron ore fines to improve blast furnace performance in terms of productivity and reduced slag rate necessitate intensive beneficiation of iron ore. The task is even difficult for Indian iron ores, which are generally high in iron content and at the same time characterized by aluminous gangue. In 2006, M/s Tata Steel commissioned a state-of-the-art Jigging Plant (Batac Jig) at Noamundi Iron Mine (NIM), mainly to reduce alumina in iron ore fines. The jigging plant is incorporated in the existing beneficiation circuit to treat ?10+0.5mm size fraction of classifier fines. Over the course of plant stabilization while the plant could deliver desired ore upgradation and average product alumina, variability in terms of alumina content has been a concern. This paper discusses a case study of process parameters optimization in jigging operation to achieve consistent product quality while improving the effectiveness of gravity concentration for the beneficiation of Noamundi iron ore also to take care of inferior plant feed (input) grade year on year. The operating variables used to optimize jigging operations include bed height, pulsion and suction time, particle size, strokes, and plant throughput rate.

"The recovery of oxide Cu minerals by flotation is a longstanding challenge in the minerals industry, especially for high acid-consuming ores which would not be economical for direct acid leaching. Sulfidization (often using controlled potential sulfidization or CPS) using NaSH (or Na2S) followed by flotation using traditional sulfide collectors is the widely used technique. CPS has certain limitations: a) inability to recover certain oxide Cu minerals because they are refractory to sulfidization, b) high consumption of NaSH (or Na2S), and c) potential health and safety hazards associated with NaSH (and Na2S). Flotation of oxide copper minerals using alkyl hydroxamate (AHX) collector has been studied extensively. Investigations using single minerals and laboratory ore flotation have been conducted in the past to demonstrate the efficacy of alkyl hydroxamates. The technology has been used intermittently in plants. One of the main challenges in plant use has been quantifying the true potential for alkyl hydroxamates for recovery of various oxide Cu species in complex and variable ore systems and identifying the most suitable conditions for optimal use. Quantitative mineralogical analysis using QEMSCAN was used in this study to characterize flotation products lab flotation samples. Analysis of concentrates and tails from hydroxamate flotation and CPS flotation stages demonstrated that certain oxide Cu minerals respond exclusively to alkyl hydroxamates and not to CPS. The hierarchy of interaction of AHX with the various oxide Cu minerals could be inferred from these studies. Finally, these studies also allowed quantification of a group of minerals species, which (erroneously) report as part of the Acid-Soluble Cu [ASCu] but cannot be recovered by flotation, thereby facilitating an estimation of the true recovery potential for alkyl hydroxamate.INTRODUCTIONCopper that is economically recoverable occurs in three major types of ores, which are defined by the modal mineralogy of Cu. For sulfide ores, Cu occurs as sulfide minerals and is satisfactorily recovered by flotation using sulfide collectors. Non-sulfide ores, which contain Cu in the form of oxides, phosphates, carbonates and silicates, described in the industry as “oxide” ores (or ores containing “acid-soluble” Cu or ASCu), are currently treated using hydrometallurgy, which involves leaching with dilute sulfuric acid followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, unless the ores contain acid consuming gangue minerals such as dolomite. For mixed sulfide-oxide ores (i.e. containing both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals) that do not contain acid consuming gangue minerals, Cu values are easily recovered by flotation of sulfide Cu minerals followed by leaching of oxides (only when a leach plant is available). However, when the ore contains acid consuming gangue minerals flotation is required to recover both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals."

"Lithium discovered in La Vi deposit, Quang Ngai province in the Central of Vietnam was estimated with a reserve of approximately 1.5 million tones of lithium ore, which was characterized by mainly lepidolite with muscovite, albite, and quartz. This study investigated reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions of enrichment technology for lepidolite from the mined ore by flotation process, and producing Li2CO3 and LiCl from lepidolite concentrate by hydrometallurgical process. The significant conditions for froth flotation of lithium ore including particle size, pH of ore slurry, pulp density, chemical spending (collectors, activators, depressants, and frothers), stirring and flotation time were investigated. The identified reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions for froth flotation the La Vi lithium ore processed lepidolite concentrate containing up to 4 wt.% Li2O with a recovery of 87.61 wt.%. The processes of sulfation roasting lepidolite concentrate using FeSO4.7H2O, then leaching in H2SO4 solution, and removing impurities were carried out to prepare a pure lithium-bearing solution for producing Li2CO3 and LiCl. The products containing 99.05 wt.% of Li2CO3 and 99.02 wt.% of LiCl were obtained with recoveries of 82.97 wt.% and 85.77 wt.%, respectively. The obtained results indicated that lithium ore in La Vi deposit can be processed to produce commercial lithium products and lead the study to develop technology for a new industry of lithium processing in Vietnam.INTRODUCTION Lithium is the lightest metal, which has many superior properties in both metal and compound (such as Li2CO3, LiCl...) states since its discovery in 1817 by Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson. Lithium is a favourable material for many high technology fields such as aerospace industry and chemical industry. Some industrial fields which present the main consumptions of lithium include ceramic, glass, aluminum alloy, lubricants, rechargeable Li-ion batteries, synthetic rubber, and pharmaceuticals. The worldwide production of lithium in 2014 was 31,700 tones, continually increased in 2015 of 5% presented 32,500 tones (USGS, 2016). The demand for lithium tends to increase because of the raising in consumption of lithium batteries. Lithium is mined from salar brines, mainly in Chile and Bolivia, but also from granites and pegmatites, which contain minerals with high lithium content such as spodumene - LiAlSi2O6 (Heinrich et al., 1978; Linnen et al., 2012); petalite - LiAlSi4O10 (Sitando & Crouse, 2012); zinnwaldite - KLiFe2+Al(AlSi3O10)(F,OH)2 (Paukov et al., 2010; Kondás J. & Jandová J., 2006); lepidolite - K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2 (Luong et al., 2013); and amblygonite - LiAlPO4F (Garrett, 2004)."

Mechanism of BK501 in desiliconization from bauxite was studied by use of flotation test, EDS, ?-potential, FTIR. Results of flotation show that almost all of diaspore can be depressed when BK501 is put into pulp ranging from pH 4~12, in the meanwhile kaolinite is slightly activated. In the light of surface analyses, it is concluded that the adsorption of reagent on the diaspore is dominant by chemical interaction. Moreover, kaolinite may float more by addition of BK501 because of flocculation.

Impeller speed and air flow rate are two influence parameters on coarse particles flotation and collision and attachment angles. So, in this research recovery of quartz particles at four diameter classes carried out and collision and attachment angles investigated. It is found that maximum flotation response was observed at Impeller speed of 1100 rpm and 15 L/h air flow rate. For either more quiescent (Impeller speed<1100 rpm) or more turbulent conditions, flotation recovery decreased steadily. Furthermore, amount of attachment probabilities is calculated using suitable equation. According to this study, with decreasing particle size, air flow rate and impeller speed, probability of attachment increased and with increasing contact angle, probability of attachment increased. For various air flow rates, impeller speed and particle size, collision angle has been calculated. Maximum collision angle obtained at with 15 L/h air flow rate, particle size of 256 µm and impeller speed of 700 rpm and minimum collision angle obtained at with 45 L/h air flow rate, particle size of 545µm and impeller speed of 1300 rpm. "The global demand for the copper metal is continuously increasing however, the high-grade copper ore deposits are constantly depleting. As a result, ore bodies with complex mineralogy characteristics and rich in arsenic-copper bearing minerals are increasingly processed. Arsenic-copper sulphides such as enargite can represent a significant amount of arsenic in concentrate, which causes high financial penalties by smelters. On the other hand, arsenic (As) is a highly toxic inorganic pollutant, which causes human health and environmental problems. Recent research studies have demonstrated promising results showing the possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from copper sulphides using controlled pulp potential (Eh) flotation at laboratory scale. However, the selective removal of arsenic-copper minerals in real ore systems is not well understood. Two ore samples were selected from the Tampakan copper-gold deposit located in the Philippines named the HAS (high arsenic sample) and the LAS (low arsenic sample) samples and the mineralogical analyses were performed on both samples. The floatability of enargite in a batch flotation system under controlled pulp potential conditions was investigated for the HAS and the LAS samples. It was observed that it is possible to selectively separate enargite from other copper minerals after reducing the pulp potential to about -200 mV SHE at pH 11 in the LAS sample. However, no separation between enargite and other copper minerals was observed at a reducing potential for the HAS sample. Mineralogical analyses and surface chemistry studies were undertaken for both samples to find out the reasons for different observations. This study has an important implication in sulphide flotation to achieve sustainable development in the utilisation of arsenic-copper mineral resources. INTRODUCTIONAs the demand for copper is increasing, the extraction and development of resources including complex deposits is becoming necessary. These complex deposits often have issues such as: lower grade ores, floatable non-sulphide gangue, very fine-grained ore and therefore poor liberation and significant regrinding, mixed copper mineralogy, complicated galvanic interactions, economic levels of gold and silver, and high levels of impurities such as arsenic. There is currently no established methodology for separating arsenic-bearing copper minerals from other copper sulphide minerals by flotation. The possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from other copper minerals by controlling the potential of the flotation pulp has been shown in previous studies. However most of these studies were conducted on single mineral systems and the selective removal of arsenic-copper minerals in complex ore systems is not well understood. The flotation behaviour of arsenic-bearing minerals within complex ores differs significantly from that of pure mineral systems due to the effects of mineralogical composition, the degree of liberation, and the surface oxidation. The understanding and manipulation of these effects can lead to improvements in the selective flotation recovery of arsenic-bearing species from complex ore systems."

"A specially designed mill which allowed the control of pH throughout grinding was used to study the effect of rgrinding conditions on galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite. The various reactions occurring on the mineral surface were investigated by a range of techniques, including OH- addition to maintain the grinding pH, EDTA extraction, XPS and ToF-SIMS measurements.Galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite were strongly dependent on the metal oxidation species produced on galena and pyrite surfaces under different grinding conditions. Iron oxidation species depressed both galena and pyrite flotation, whilst lead oxidation species activated pyrite but had little effect on galena. Optimum galena flotation and galena selectivity against pyrite were achieved by selecting grinding conditions that enabled lead and iron oxidation production to be controlled."

Recovery of Co from slag is a recent advancement in the extractive metallurgy of nonferrous metals. In this study a DC arc technology at laboratory scale has been applied to investigate the selective recovery of Co from slag, under three different flux types with an emphasis on influencing the activity of FeOx, SiO2 and CoO in the slag. It is known that reduction of slag by carbon is only up to a certain level after which, the recovery will depend on the chemistry of the slag, hence the need to modify the slag chemistry. Two power settings were employed to induce higher temperatures and aggressive agitation. The results were interpreted by comparing how much Co and Fe was in the slag and alloy. TiO2 reduced the amount of Fe in the product alloy compared to when CaO and CaF2 were used. The change in power did not seem to have had a major effect on the recovery although the amount of material lost to flue dust was more at a higher power rate.

"The Jameson Cell is a type of flotation machine in which air and pulp are brought together in a vertical tube called a downcomer. Within the downcomer the air and pulp are dispersed into a dense foam of fine bubbles, which creates a favourable environment for bubble-particle collision and subsequent collection of hydrophobic particles. The intense collection zone within the downcomer can be considered similar to the zone between the rotor and stator in mechanical flotation cells.Research into the bubble-particle collision and fluid dynamics of mechanical cells rotor-stator zone has been limited by the difficulty of achieving accurate measurements in production sized machines. With the Jameson Cell the downcomer is largely external and separated from the flotation tank, allowing ready access to the primary contacting zone for measurement and analysis.An investigation has been undertaken into the operating characteristics of the downcomer relating to bubble-particle collision. An effective mapping of the downcomer has been made through measurements of void fraction and bubble size taken across cross sections of the downcomer. Analysis of these measurements has provided an interpretation of the variations in the air and fluid dynamics, bubble size and distribution throughout the downcomer chamber."

The mechanisms taking place during the leaching of chalcopyrite when it is in contact with other sulphide minerals, particularly pyrite, is still a matter not fully solved. The GalvanoxTM process has been suggested as a technical solution to extract copper from chalcopyrite at commercial level inhibiting passivation phenomena widely reported in the field of hydrometallurgy. Although there are some rules of thumb to implement the process in fully flooded stirred conditions such as the optimum pyrite/chalcopyrite mass ratio should range between 2 and 4, among others; not many research studies have been focused on studying the effect of the surface contact area between chalcopyrite and pyrite to reach best copper extraction conditions. The aim of this research work is to determine the effect of the mass and surface area ratio between the minerals and the surface area of each of the mineral species effectively exposed to the leaching solution. Different particle size distributions of pure pyrite and chalcopyrite were contacted in a small column and subjected to leach tests using sulphuric acid in concentrations close those used in industrial leaching processes. The mass and surface area ratios which optimize the extraction of copper were obtained. It was found the best leaching conditions were attained when reducing the particle size distribution of pyrite regardless the particle size distribution of chalcopyrite. Further analysis concerning the impact of this conclusions on large scale operations is presented and discussed.

"A typical Chilean producer in the Large Copper Mining Industry today is characterized by high production level with economical results decreasing but still attractive. Operational activities are developed within a low-productivity environment, with high cost and complex relationship between the company and communities, government authorities, providers, clients and their own workers. Decreasing copper grades and limited availability of energy, water and workforce are structural problems which require the State intervention in collaboration with the relevant actors and benefits would be evident in the middle or long term. Main opportunities in the short term are found in the sub optimal conditions we have at many plants today. Robust solutions to control existing operational management system as well as to supply systematic optimization options are needed. These should be oriented toward effective fulfillment of specific operational set points and also to reduce variability in crosscutting tasks. Solutions should include easy connectivity to existing information systems as well as to a suite of simulation and optimization tools settled in a highly interactive communication platform. Relevant issues include minimization of specific energy and fresh water consumption, maximization of the use and performance of critical equipments, minimization of damage to environment and control of effective application of good operational practices. Several specific examples are given."

"Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is the most prevalent industrial disease. It is ranked on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) priority list for major work related injuries. Uncontrolled noise not only has a physical effect, but is also a psychological hazard affecting the performance and well being of man. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is irreversible, yet it is preventable. The first defence against noise (noise control engineering) is a high priority in the mining industry. Second defences should be a last resort when the engineering control of noise is inadequate. Hearing conservation programs and the use of conventional hearing protection devices seem to have failed in the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. If compensation payouts that quadrupled in the past ten years are used as a barometer for the success of existing hearing conservation programs, then new strategies and technologies need to be investigated. The best practice Hearing Protection Device (HPD) may be seen as the minimum standard for second defence noise control.Conventional hearing protection is widely applied, but also misused in the industry as well as in the mining sector. Empirical research results, ownership, general attitudes of workers as well as qualitative aspects will be explored. The paper provides reasons, evidence, case studies and strategies regarding the best practice hearing protection philosophy (the Noise Clipper Model) as implemented in the Implats Mining Group. Worldwide tendencies towards custom-made HPD’s, findings that indicate improvements in hearing conservation programs and finally the successful application of Custom-made Hearing Protection Devices, will be outlined."

"The development of the SAG Power Index (SPI) Test in Canada has created a new and accurate way to measure ore hardness in a SAG environment. Coupled with the standard Bond Ball Mill Work Index Test it is now possible to determine from these two relatively inexpensive laboratory tests, the amount of energy required to grind an ore from the primary crushed size to the desired liberation size. By testing multiple samples to discover where the hard and soft ore zones are located, the representative hardness distribution for the ore body can be determined and grinding equipment selected that is capable to meet production targets for all mining areas of the deposit.Previously, it was deemed prudent to select up to 50 t samples of ore for Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests and a second 5 t sample for metallurgical pilot plant work. The methods outlined in this paper show how the 50 t sample is no longer required for SAG design because it is better to measure the representative hardness distribution of the ore body than the hardness of a “chosen” representative sample. This is demonstrated to be true by the fact that the lower horizons of an ore zone cannot initially be accessed to recover 150mm pieces, and the bulk samples taken, rarely represent the desired design hardness of the ore. Median hardness will not yield a good result in most cases and a clear understanding of the location and extent of the hardest zones is imperative to achieve a truly successful grinding circuit design.This paper discusses two plants (Kubaka and Agnico Eagle) that have been designed using SPI and Bond with no pilot plant test backup. Both have been very successful in that they can grind design tonnage on the hardest ores in the mine. This guarantees that the mine’s profitability is protected in any mining sequence. It also allows the extra power to be converted to higher throughput on softer ores if additional cash flow is needed. The advantages from the owner’s point of view are dramatic. This procedure will be attractive as well when considering the costs for test work, and the samples for testing. Existing diamond drill core is normally used and this allows the inclusion of data from the deepest regions of the mine. In addition, it is also clear that the decision to use a crusher can now be made at the design stage of a project based on measured parameters and the estimated capital costs of alternative designs."

In mining and mineral processing, ammonium and nitrate from residues of explosives and other sources are discharged to the aquatic environment. Nitrogenous compounds in mine water can adversely affect the aquatic environment. The aim of this work was to study the biological removal of nitrate from cold inorganic mine water at the pilot-scale in an operating underground mine. Seven-months pilot testing on biological removal of nitrate from inorganic mine water was successfully performed in denitrifying fixed-bed biofilm reactors. The feed to denitrification bioreactors contained 11 mg NO3--N/L. Methanol was added as an external carbon source to the denitrifying bio-reactor since the inorganic mine water contained only traces of organic compounds (<CODCr (50 mgO2/L). Nitrate removal reached 75 g NO3--N/m3/d with removal efficiencies above 95% at temperature below 4°C. Thus, removal of explosives-residues from cold inorganic mine water was shown in pilot-scale biofilm reactors.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates an iron ore mine, three beneficiation plants and three pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation in the beneficiation plants are wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the WLIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Currently, the high-grade iron ore deposit of Kiirunavaara has a low grade of silica in situ, of approximately 3.0% SiO2, but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit with a complex silicate mineralogy. An increasing silica grade will affect especially the production of direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets), one of the main products of LKAB in Kiruna with an average silica grade of under 0.75% SiO2. The silica grade in the magnetite concentrate is normally limited to a maximum level of 0.55% SiO2 in order to achieve the required chemical composition in the pelletizing process. In order to study the possibility to reduce silicate content in the magnetite concentrate (pellet feed) in the beneficiation plants in Kiruna obtained by wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS), enlarged mineral processing test work was carried out in the LKAB’s mineral processing laboratories in 2016. The test work consisted of comminution, low intensity magnetic separation and reverse cationic silicate flotation at laboratory scale, complemented by screen analysis, chemical assays and mineralogical investigation. The results of these mineral processing test work showed that the magnetic separation is not sufficient to reduce the silica content in the magnetite concentrate, particularly in the case of the high-SiO2 ore type B2-a. The reverse cationic flotation can be regarded as a possible solution to reduce the silicate content in the magnetite concentrate obtained by WLIMS and to achieve the required silica grade of less than 0.55 % SiO2 in the pellet feed. The results of this study provide a good basis to understand the behaviour of different silicates in the existing beneficiation process. Furthermore, it serves valuable information for development of new beneficiation processes and for investment in new equipment at the beneficiation plants in Kiruna in the future.

"Copper anode slime is a precious secondary source for the recovery of silver. However, current recovery process are constrained by either sever pollution or high cost. To cover the drawbacks of current process, this research employed a novel strategy by using the manganese dioxide as the oxidant in acid solution, which avoided the generation of sulfur dioxide while high silver extraction rate was achieved. The effects of manganese dioxide, sulfur acid concentration, stirring speed, temperature and leaching time on silver extraction rate were investigated. The silver recovery reached to 91.68% under the conditions of 1.2 g manganese, 2.0 mol/L H2SO4, 300 rpm, 80 °C and 6 h. INTRODUCTION Copper anode slime is generated from the electrolysis refining of copper and is extremely precious for its containing noble metal such as silver (Chatterjee, 1996; Amer, 2003; Yldrm et al., 2014; Syed, 2016; Wang et al., 2017). Therefore it is of great significance to extract silver from anode slime for the full utilization of resource. Pyrometallurgy is the most mature process for the extraction of silver because of its stability and adaptability (Hait et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2017). However, it also suffers the drawbacks of high operating cost, low extraction rate of silver and severe pollution of smoke dust (usually containing lead and arsenic) (Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). To cover the drawbacks of pyrometallurgy process, more and more attentions are giving to the semi-hydrometallurgy process which usually includes a pretreatment process of sulphatising roast or low temperature oxidizing roasting (Tishchenko, 1964). After pretreatment, the refractory silver bearing phases (silver selenide, silver sulfide and silver) are converted into readily leached forms which are often extracted by ammonia, sodium sulfite in alkaline solution (Valiuniene et al., 2010; Wojciech, and Kitka, 2017). Despite its relatively high extraction rate and low investment, it still has the disadvantages of releasing harmful gases since the sulfur dioxide are generally generated in the pretreatment process. In addition, the use of ammonia can easily lead to a leaking into the atmosphere once not carefully dealt with (Aylmore and Muir, 2001). As for silver recovery by sulfite leaching, the consumption of sodium sulfite is rather high which often results in a pipe blocked (Yang et al., 2006)."
