According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. Mechanochemical activation of starting minerals and their effect on the solid-phase synthesis and properties of ceramics with lower thermal expansion coefficient was examined. The mineral mixture, pyrophyllite-gibbsite-lithium carbonate, was prepared for the synthesis of ?-eucryptite (Li2O•Al2O3•2SiO2). Dry grinding using a planetary ball mill promoted the amorphization of the starting mixtures. XRD and FT-IR results showed that the crystallization of the target materials occurred from the ground mixtures by calcination. The crystallization of them increased with increment of grinding time and calcination temperature. In the synthesis, the trace of undesired phases such as quartz and cristobalite once formed during calcination at the temperature range from 750 to 850 °C almost disappeared and monophase ?-eucryptite was formed in the ground mixture at 950 °C. "Frothers offered by different manufacturers are marketed with some information on their chemical and physical properties (e.g. density, viscosity, color, water-solubility, safety/toxicity, etc.). But frothers are used in flotation to generate fine bubbles and to stabilize the forth, and this information is only provided in a very qualitative description of the visual appearance of bubbles and froths. The terms “powerful” and “selective”, which have been commonly used to characterize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning.This paper introduces the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) plotted vs. CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) diagrams to classify flotation frothers (Fig. 1). The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers."

The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels."

"The objective of this work is the scientific justification and development of efficient and environmentally-friendly method of bulk concentrate preparation for selection with application of microbiological practices. This research suggests to apply Pseudomonas Japonica bacterial culture to the bulk concentrate before the selection circuit in order to clear the surface of sulphides from the xanthate skin. It is also suggested to apply bacterial consortium Ochrobactrum ?nthropi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa JCM 5962 for desorption of diesel residual concentrations. High-efficient and environmentally friendly method of copper-molybdene and lead-zinc bulk concentrate selection was developed based on theoretical and experimental research work with application of microbiological practices. In comparison with conventional methods (steaming, sodium sulphide washing) the above suggested bio-technological method of bulk concentrate preparation before selection cycle will allow to reduce material and power expenditures, and it is also environmentally friendly. INTRODUCTION High-efficient selection of sulphide bulk concentrate is gained exclusively after collecting agent is removed from mineral surface. Therefore, the problem of bulk concentrate preparing before the selection cycle is acute, since the further technological parameters of the subsequent separation depends on the effectiveness of pulp preparation. Existing traditional ways of bulk concentrate preparation. such as washing or steaming, are characterized by high energy and material costs in industrial conditions [1,2]. The microbiological treatment before separation of the bulk concentrate into different kind of concentrates appear one of perspective processes for treatment of bulk concentrates [3,4]. At the present time, the world practice of processing mineral raw materials demonstrates the wide application of technologies using microorganisms: bacterial leaching and oxidation, purification of industrial wastewater. Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. "High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) is increasingly being chosen for comminution circuits for its energy-efficiency for hard rock mining operations. Despite HPGR’s growing popularity, geo-metallurgy programs are still prohibitively expensive because of large sample requirements. Traditionally, sizing HPGR application requires a significant amount of sample, in the order of 1 to 10 tonnes, depending on the level of study and complexity of the resource. Therefore, engineering and design of HPGR circuits typically are reliant on few composites that are required to be representative of the resource and mine plan. Three bench scale HPGR test methodologies were developed in 2015 at NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) capable of defining the energy size breakage relationship of pilot HPGR. These methodologies were developed to allow bench scale testing for different levels of study from PEA (Preliminary Economic Assessment) to detailed design and operations. The Piston Press test defines the energy size reduction relationship by measuring specific energy consumption and corresponding feed and product size distributions. The advantage of Piston Press testing is the small sample requirement of 5 to 10 kg. Small sample requirements allow multiple samples to be tested across a deposit. Piston Press testing allows extensive geo-metallurgy programs that can determine ore variability and inform in optimization and production planning. To date, the Piston Press methodologies have been validated on a pilot-scale HPGR unit located at UBC. Recently, testing was conducted to calibrate and validate the Piston Press test against full-scale HPGR on a gold sulphide ore deposit. The program included the collection of operational data with the respective HPGR feed and recycle sample. Sample collected was used both for Piston Press testing and HPGR piloting. This paper discusses the test-work and results as carried out during this program, using the aforementioned methodologies."

"In current flotation circuits it is customary to grind the whole of the mill feed to an initial size, which is determined by the liberation characteristics of the ore, and the ability of the flotation machines to float the fully liberated particles. Usually, the product of the primary mill will be ground further in a ball mill, to improve the liberation of the values and hence the product grade, before passing to rougher flotation cells. The final grind size is ore-dependent, and is a balance of factors including the relation between surface liberation and grind size, the grain size of the valuable particles within the host rock, and the feed grade. The P80 for the feed to flotation may be as high as 300 µm for free-milling copper ores, and as low as 53 µm for finely disseminated complex ores. The grinding of the feed ore requires considerable input of energy. The rate of replacement of wear components such as mill liners and media, is proportional to the energy input. The costs of these two factors - energy and wear - are usually comparable and together they form the major part of the running costs of a concentrator, and indeed, of the whole mining operation. The energy required increases as the final grind size decreases. This talk will focus on the reduction of milling costs that could be achieved, using a fluidized bed flotation technology that can give high recoveries at coarse particle sizes. A number of different circuit designs will be presented, using the new technology. Calculations show that reductions in the running costs of a mine and associated concentrator of the order of ten to twenty percent could be achieved."

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. "We have developed a technology to improve the quality of low-grade concentrates containing minerals of tantalum, niobium and tin on the basis of given conception by the way of improving selectivity and using certain reagents composition. The basic collector presents a traditional or complex-forming collector used together with organic diphilic reagents – the secondary reagents regarding the basic flotation regiment, capable of forming associates with the main collector on the surface of the mineral, thus altering the interaction energy. In the given process the main collector is the fraction of hydroxamic acids C7-C9, the reagent of the secondary action – sulphosuccinamate, which added in moderate concentrations range provides for a synergistic effect.We have determined the parameters of the process stability and necessary modifying reagents for a selective recovery of tantalum, niobium and tin minerals from refractory products. Variants have been studied where the main collector and the secondary action reagent were substituted with some more efficient flotation reagents. A possibility of a more flexible reagent compounding for the process has been shown. The flotation process is highly stable regards the saline composition of the liquid phase in the pulp. It can operate under conditions of the complete water recycling with the total salt content up to 12 kg/m3, iron up to 1.2 kg/m3.The given results consider the efficiency testing of the suggested technology for the gravitation products, which were obtained from ores of various genesis and contain large quantity of the most refractory minerals, such as topaz (80%), gamet (55%), tourmaline (30%). High selectivity of the process has been registered with the metal recovery about 92-98%, which appears to be similar to hydrometallurgical operations under certain conditions."

Certainly, laboratory tests will not be able to substitute completely industrial ones, but allow reducing the amounts of the industrial tests, that vastly reduces the cost of technological forecast and preparation of data for projection.Calculation of the potential indexes of mineral technology (mass yields and the metal content in products) is fulfilled on the base of results of measurements of the mineralogical liberation parameters using special formulas.The quality of the concentrate ßc = a + ?l • ?s • ?i (ßt - a) can be achieved on a level of the theoretical metal content of a mineral - ßt only if coefficients of mineral processing, of liberation ?l and selectivity ?s of grinding, effectiveness of separation, will reach 1 (a - metal content of the row ore).Increase ?l by overgrinding automatically decrease ?s, and only by destroying of particles of ore along surfaces of accreting of minerals (?i = 1) and when values of all three coefficients will aim to 1, then ßc ? ßt.The degree of liberation of the useful mineral is the ratio of mass of free grains of the useful mineral in the product to general mass of the same mineral in this product. "The article highlights the new procedure of choosing special methods of disintegration for very complicated rare ores. Especially, there is a complex approach to criteria of comparing different types of crashing machines. Criteria are as follows: degree of crashing, degree of grinding, degree of slime creation and the new creations criteria for selection. The procedure is tested on tantalium and zelestinium ore. A new methods was shown the preference impact crashing machine MD-7 for zelestinium ore. In product of crashing 0,050 mm size are 9.4 %, 0,005 mm size – 2.5 %.This is gut result, and show the best indexes of slime creation. The check of the proposed new methods was done when comparing the crushing of tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers and roller press. A research was conducted different crashing machines under laboratory and semi-industrial conditions. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion and degree of crashing showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) and roller press (RP) has the lower indexes than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). Degrees of crashing for different crashing machines are:centrifugal impact crusher – 10.1;roller press – 10.8;cone inertial crusher – 14.2. The crusher CC the selection criterion is 0,632 units, RP – 0.730, where as for the crusher CIC – 0.848 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 0°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1420 r.p.m, specific energy consumption- 4.99 kW*t/t. Crusher CIC-300? is the best for tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit. The new methodic are verification.INTRODUCTION Rare metal concentration circuits are complex, energy-intensive, and costly. The reasons for this include the multimetal nature of the rare metal ores, their volatile material composition and low grade. That is why careful selection of ore preparation circuits is of great importance for minimizing the energy inputs and maximizing the liberation of the valuable minerals. Recent research (Khopunov, 2011, Gazaleeva, 2015) has demonstrated that the most efficient comminution processes available to the mineral processing industry are selective disintegration, crushing and grinding, allowing to liberate the mineral particles along the cleavage in the comminution process. These methods are indispensable for the processing of finely disseminated refractory ores prone to slime formation. Many rare metal ores found in Russia are of this type."

The Miraí plant from Votorantim Metais, has two screening stages to the bauxite classification after scrubbagem. The final product has hold the larger size of 0,84 millimeters (20 mesh). There are two sieves Haver & Boecker (model R-TE 3658 x 10972), which have four modules with cut size sieves of 10 mesh (1.70 millimeters) and ¼ inch (6.35 millimeters) on the primary screen, and 20 mesh (0.84 mm) on the secondary screen, all made of polyurethane. The actual configuration was established according to the empirical tests realized that aimed the increase material load on the secondary screening. However, having in mind the screening process improvement and use the fractions smaller than 0,84 mm, which have significant levels of Alumina and low reactive silica, was proposed a new test of change the sieves opening for 6 mesh in the primary screen and 28 mesh for the secondary sieve. The objective of this work was measure the ore alterations on the particle size distribution on the screening steps, increasing the plant weight and ratio recovery before and after the test.

High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line is a new type High Gradient Magnetic Separator product. It is found that as the rougher for weakly magnetic minerals separation, High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line has more stable metallurgical performance and cheaper running costs than other types of High Gradient Magnetic Separator when the properties of the ore change greatly and there is in the case of embedded fine particle size distribution. "The deleterious effect of carbonaceous matter during cyanidation of gold ores (so called preg-robbing) has been recognized for many years. Based on this, a new method using flotation to reduce the content of carbonaceous matter was developed. Low-sulfide gold-bearing ore with carbonaceous matter of 0.14% from a Russian deposit was processed. The purpose of these tests was to compare two flow sheet options. Option I comprised removal of carbonaceous product prior to sulfide flotation. Option II comprised removal of carbonaceous matter from flotation concentrate. It was found that the content of carbonaceous material can be reduced in sulfide gold-bearing concentrate prior to leaching. High gold recovery was observed during the separation of carbonaceous material prior to sulfide flotation using Option I. Due to lower reagent consumption the costs for reagents were decreased using Option II. The results have shown the effectiveness of a new method. Patent No. 2783808 was obtained for removal of carbonaceous material prior to sulfide flotation. This information will be used to design a large processing plant flow sheet in Russia."

"The depletion of the high-grade chromite ores and the inefficiency of the gravimetric methods to process fine particles has shifted the industrial and research interest from gravimetric separation methods to flotation. However, the response of the minerals to various flotation schemes is not clearly established. In this work, the physicochemical behavior of chromite and olivine is studied using a fatty acid collector.The minerals used were from Vourino area (Kozani, Northern Greece). Macroscopically pure samples of chromite and olivine were selected by hand picking, crushed and subsequently ground to the required size. Each sample was then submitted to panning and magnetic separation for the removal of impurities. The mineralogical and chemical analysis of the purified samples revealed the following: a) The purity of chromite was 95% while the minor constituent was mainly magnetite. Its chemical analysis was: 12.50% Fetot, 2.50% SiO2, 54,54% Cr2O3, 9.31% Al2O3, 0.47% CaO, 13.10% MgO. These analyses show that Cr3+ has been substituted by Fe3+ and Al3+ as well as Fe2+ has been significantly substituted by Mg2+. b) Forsterite is the main constituent of olivine either as pure forsterite (Mg2SiO4), which is the prevailing form, or as iron-forsterite [(Mg,Fe)2SiO4] in less amount. Chrysotile, which belongs to the serpentine group, was also detected at a percentage of 10-15%. The chemical analysis of olivine was: 36.90% SiO2, 0,53% Cr2O3, 7,43% Fe2O3, 0.72% Al2O3, 0.91% CaO, 47.00% MgO, 6.02% LOI.The electrokinetic behavior of the minerals was studied in a electrophoretic mass transport equipment Model 1202 of Micromeritics. The reagents used were sodium hexa-metaphosphate of commercial grade and sodium oleate."

"The main purpose of geometallurgy is to improve the mine planning by mapping hardness and throughput into the mine block model using geostatistics to eliminate the large production fluctuations caused by the ore hardness variability coming from different parts of the pit. However, not all grinding testwork available commercially can be applied to geometallurgy because of large amount of sample required and the associated cost per test. Geometallurgy is now being used in designing grinding mill but as the mining project progress, the accuracy of engineering must improve from 30-35% during the scoping study to 10-15% at the bankable feasibility stage and less than 5% for Engineering Procurement and Construction Management. For SAG milling, the SAG Variability Test (SVT) is an abbreviated version of the standard SAGDesign test developed for this geometallurgical need. The same amount of ore than the original test is ground for three cycles into an open batch SAG test and then the SAG pinion energy is predicted to the standard end point of 80% passing 1.7 mm. For ball milling, a Bond Variability Test (BVT) was also developed using the SAG ground ore from the SVT. The Bond ball mill grindability (Gpb), corresponding to the average of the net grams per revolution from the last three cycles of the Bond test, is also predicted from the third cycle. The relative error for both the predicted SAG ore hardness (WSVT) and Bond Work Index on SAG Variability ground ore (Sv-BVI), in kWh/t, averaged 5.5% and 3.8% respectively compared to the SAGDesign testwork values and are within 7% and 10% respectively from plant benchmark and within 7% from the samples sent to all partner laboratories. Both tests can be continued to measure the true hardness necessary for mill sizing. This article discusses the development of these two new tests, SVT and BVT, their potential use and accuracies in any geometallurgical program."
