Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. The collisional stage is represented by epigenetic deposits including sandstone Pb deposits (Pb, Zn, Ba, F and Cu) and minor vein deposits with variable Au, Ag, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Sb, W and Mo

Pachuca tanks are extensively used for the cyanide leaching of gold and the carbonate leaching of uranium, processes in which oxygen mass transfer plays a very important role. Experiments were carried out to clarify the effect of design and operating parameters on oxygen mass transfer. Parameters such as the ratio of tank height to tank diameter, the ratio of draught-tube diameter to tank diameter and the tank design were found not to influence oxygen mass transfer. Results also showed that equal superficial gas velocities may be used as a criterion for scaling up oxygen mass transfer in both full-centre-column and free-air-lift Pachuca tanks with clear water. A volume-averaged, volumetric gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficient (k'av) was used to characterise oxygen mass transfer in full-centre-column tanks. The axial dispersion model was used to determine k'av. The resulting model used only tank geometry and air flow rate as inputs for the prediction of k'av in industrial-scale tanks. Predictions from the model show clearly that "local" mass-transfer coefficients, measured at one or two locations, may not adequately represent gas-liquid mass transfer in industrial tanks. The compilation of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation aerial gamma-ray data to produce maps of the apparent surface concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium for the conterminous USA has resulted in a reasonably accurate representation of the distribution of these elements in the surface rocks and soils. With the gradual exhaustion of natural rutile, there has been extensive research into its synthesising from lower-grade titanium minerals. The removal of Fe from pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) by chlorination was studied, using both isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetric measurements. Correlation of the results obtained from element distribution maps, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and phases detected by X-ray diffraction in the chlorinated samples showed clearly two associated processes. First, the pseudobrookite particles reacted with chlorine and iron was removed selectively as FeCl3(g), leaving a solid residue rich in the TiO2 phases anatile and rutile, separated from an inner layer of unreacted pseudobrookite by a distinct interphase boundary. Second, chlorine allowed TiCl4(g) to form in the reaction bed, where it removed iron from the Fe2O3 crystals as FeCl3(g) and substituted Ti through a pseudomorphic reaction

The gasification of lump coke with CO2 was studied in a fixed-bed reactor. The effective diffusivity of the gas was evaluated from measurements of the reactivity of the lump coke, produced by BHP Steel in New South Wales, and from kinetic parameters that were determined from the reactivity of fine grains. The grain model of effective diffusion in porous media was adopted to express the gasification rate of the lump coke and was found to fit the experimental data well. The exponential delta profile equation matches the profiles of a wide range of coal and metalliferous subaerial tailings deltas well, but the original model implies unrepresentatively low solids concentrations. A revision, based on analysis of the governing equations of mobile bed flows with high concentration values, has shown that for exponential delta profiles to form there must be quasi-steady, slowly varying flow and slow deposition as well as tailings with a log-uniform sorting-parameter distribution. Deposition on tailings deltas is slow and the flow in many natural streams and, by analogy, tailings deltas is quasi-steady and slowly varying; the assumption of such flow is justified by the strong congruence of the revised model and the available data. The predictions of the theoretical model are essentially unchanged but concentration and flow Froude number are now not explicitly limited

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. This cascade process would in time greatly enrich the lower regions in PGE-bearing sulphides and chromites

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: The database: a pre-requisite for large-scale use of AI in mining). Artificial intelligence is a term which has been widely applied to different techniques including rule-based systems using inductive and deductive logic algorithms, neural networks, learning systems and genetic algorithms. In principle it should be applied to adaptive statistical techniques. Some of these applications have been coded in languages which are specifically suited to the novel requirements of AI but are not easy to integrate with more traditional computing methods. Efforts have been made to bridge the gaps, particularly with database management systems and such efforts at integration should provide the key to future success in the application of AI. A field which has been termed "knowledge engineering" cannot be credible as such if it fails to provide easy access to raw materials of "knowledge" i.e. the data residing in databases. In the mining industry there are a number of significant areas in which AI could usefully be applied throughout the industry, but its advance is slow because of the lack or inefficiency of such database links. Current development of object-oriented database systems for geology and mining holds out hope for such integration in the foreseeable future

The structural, textural and mineralogical properties of the slate formations of NW Spain make it the most important district in the world for quarrying roofing slates. Over the past 10 years the introduction of new methods has increased yields from 2 to 13%. The main factors affecting quality are quartz grain size less than 75 micrometres, homogeneity of slaty cleavage and S0-S1 intersection angle, very low metamorphic grade, absence of secondary foliation, beds 10-12 m thick and low content of oxidisable Fe sulphides. The two main controls on fissility are lithology and deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The minimum natural block size should be 0.6 m3 but this volume can be reduced for modern cutting tools such as diamond wire, chain and circular saws. Structural analysis is crucial in exploration and quarrying, as shown by the prospecting methodology applied at Dominio de Truchas in central Spain and the computer analysis of rock mass discontinuities at Casaio quarry

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effects of roasting temperature, soaking period and quantity of soda ash added. At a laboratory scale, under optimum conditions of roasting at 873 K for 2 700 s with soda ash 10 wt% in excess of stoichiometric, molybdenum recovery was 99%. The investigations indicate the technical feasibility of producing high-purity MoO3 by combining the roasting process with carbon adsorption/desorption. The process uses low-cost chemicals, can be scaled up readily and is free of the SO2 pollution generated by conventional roasting, as the sulphur content of the concentrate is converted to sodium sulphate

The reef is a PGE-enriched sulphidic zone, stratigraphically associated with and overlapping the C1d chromitite layer, that was formed by magmatic processes at the 1e-1d subunit boundary. Analysis of 62 samples show that the sulphides throughout the igneous stratigraphy have a magmatic signature, with the exception of the uppermost gabbros and the lowermost basal thrust talc-carbonate lithologies. Mean delta-34S values for whole-rock samples from harzburgites, dunite pods in harzburgite, crustal dunites and wehrlites, the main and high-level pyroxenites and gabbros suggest that the primary sulphides derived their sulphur from a magmatic source enriched in 34S. This finding is compatible with the proposed origin of the ophiolite above a subduction zone. Values for pyrite mineralisation in the uppermost part of the gabbros are thought to result from precipitation from a seawater-derived fluid, while isotopically light sulphur in the basal thrust could have been introduced from underlying metasediments. The replacement of pentlandite by heazlewoodite has not led to sulphur fractionation

For Greek kaolin producers, a considerable proportion of whose output is from deposits containing more than 4 wt% Fe2O3, the colouring resulting from iron oxide impurity represents a serious problem that necessitates upgrading of the ore to meet commercial specifications. Autoclave leaching with oxalic acid for 1 h at 120 degrees C and 5-6 bar was shown to reduce Fe2O3 by up to 90% without affecting the structure of the kaolin, which maintained its physicochemical properties. The iron oxalate product can either be removed from solution or precipitated as iron hydroxide with recycling of the oxalic acid

A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems

Tool performance and the unit cost of cutting depend on a number of operational variables (peripheral velocity, pull-back force, water injection rate, angles of the sections of wire outside the rock) as well as on the geometric features of the cut itself (area and shape). Cutting rate and wire productivity are also influenced by the type and number of diamond beads per unit length of wire and by the characteristics of the rock (granite or marble). A computer program aimed at handling a problem of this complexity has been developed and tested with the use of available field and laboratory data and has been found acceptably reliable. Discrepancies between current industrial data and some of the results suggest future lines of research, while the simulation should also be extended to include different types of rock and tool and a variety of bench face geometries

Twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture, presented at the Tunnelling '94 symposium held in London, 5-7 July 1994. In describing 18 projects with which he has been involved over a period of 36 years, the author aims to illustrate how technological change and an increase in scientific knowledge have influenced tunnelling practice, which he nevertheless maintains does continue to be an art. The potential of eccentric cone crushers for fine crushing has been improved by increasing the swing frequency of the moving cone, balancing the crusher, ensuring uniform feed via a rotating funnel with sideways discharge, introducing hyperbolic motion and employing the inertia crushing method, but further improvements to the specifications of existing cone crusher designs are limited by the rigidity of their kinematic coupling. A new design has been developed which combines two crushing modes, stone on liner and stone on stone, each with its own advantages. The main aims are to produce finer materials and to reduce liner weight. The benefits include an increase of more than 10% in the output of fine particles, improved protection of the liner against wear, as a result of filling of the cavities by material being crushed, and the use of almost 20% less material in casting of the liner. The chamber can be used in place of the usual liners of fine cone crushers

Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits
