The Hamersley Province is located 1000km to the North of Perth the Capital City of Western Australia and is of major economic significance due to the mining of extensive deposits of Haematitic Iron Ore for both domestic and export use. A small but significant proportion of the waste associated with these deposits presents problems due to its ability to spontaneously combust and react with explosives resulting in premature detonations.

In the office, on the wall to the right of my desk is a large map of the world. Some people stick pins in maps like this to show where they’ve been. If I did that my map would be a mess and look like a pin cushion. I was so fortunate to have been able to see how people live and blast in other parts of this beautiful planet. We l l , maybe some parts weren’t so beautiful and maybe some parts that were beautiful were hell holes for those living t h e re . Every time I re t u rn to the good old US of A, I say a small prayer in thanks for having been born and raised in a land of freedom and plenty. So many places and people have not been so blessed.

Mining Engineers throughout the world have an appreciation for the importance of the role of the Blasthole Drill in one of the primary elements of the mining process. This paper highlights areas that could influence the overall cost effectiveness of that process of breaking rock and the associated downstream mining and ore recovery activities - and how the drill is designed and configured to meet that challenge. Factors influencing drill productivity and overall cost effectiveness are addressed, particularly regarding the benefits which are not necessarily reflected in the drilling process and therefore more difficult to quantify. This paper explores some of the downstream benefits of what we do to the drilling process.

The cable television show, Mythbusters, contacted the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology requesting a pressure gauge to be used in underwater testing. The requirements for the gauge were: it must be passive (i.e. require no power to function), it must indicate when a certain, pre-determined pressure was reached, and that indication was to be visual. A pressure gauge was developed, using standard, commercially available rupture discs, set to burst at 500 psi. Underwater testing was conducted using a 400 lb Pentolite charge. Test devices were set out at ranges from 50 to 200 feet from the seat of the blast. The rupture discs showed a lethal range up to 100 feet, but not at 150 feet. This result matched well with the behavior predicted through modeling and simple shock physics calculations. Additionally, the geometry between the incoming shock and the pressure gauge did not seem to have a strong effect on gauge performance.

ABSTRACT : The Tournai’s region in Belgium is characterized by outcrops of limestone that were mined out long ago by different companies for cement and crushed materials. The region is densely populated and the vibrations generated by blasts in the quarries are of big concern. The occurrence of electronic detonators and development of computer sciences brought a new expectation in controlling the vibration level and, hence, carry out bigger blast operations. In this paper we present the results of two experimental blast programs that have been carried out by the Nobel explosive Belgium Company on the Gaurain-Ramecroix quarry to understand the effect of the delay on the vibrations generated in the neighborhood. The first program has been implemented during the early use of electronic caps in Belgium (1996) by performing some unit shots. An attempt to model the effect of the production blasts by the hybrid method (Hinzen 1988) gave promising but poor results compared to infield measurements. A new program (more than ten blasts) has been implemented in 2006 in which the delay and blast firing sequence (i.e. the order in firing adjacent holes in a row) have been changed; a new attempt is made to build unit signals by deconvolution and then try to model production ones. A comparison of the two approaches is made.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advice of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

Investigators have reported that charges which are decoupled from the borehole wall produce different fragmentation then those which are fully coupled. The difference in effect could be as a result of energy doss during transmission across the air gap or it could be due to the change in detonation characteristics of the explosive as a result of the change in confinement on the charge during detonation. In order to better understand the phenomena of decoupling, a research project was conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Station, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was decided to use shock and bubble energy tests along with simultaneous velocity measurement to determine the mechanics of decoupling and energy transmission. Two explosives were selected for the test, one dynamite and one water gel. Test results indicated that decoupling could both boost the total energy output of the explosive and that further decoupling would drop the energy output.

The scorched desert sands and life giving waters of the River Nile in Egypt have been the back drop to awe inspiring engineering feats for over 4,700 years. The latest engineering marvel to grace the land of the Pharaohs is the Mubarak Pumping Station Project at Toshka. This ambitious project aims to open up an area of 607,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) of barren desert to irrigation based farming with the supply of 29 million tonnes (32 million tons) of water per day, drawn from Lake Nasser on the river Nile. It is anticipated that this currently unpopulated area of southern Egypt will soon flourish and become home to several million Egyptians who will conduct their lives around the water supplied by the 230 kilometers (144 miles) of concrete canals. An integral part of the pumping station is the intake canal. The canal was excavated in two sections – the dry excavation, and the wet excavation. The wet excavation comprised of some 5.5 million cubic meters (7.2 million cubic yards) of rock to be drilled, blasted, and excavated, from the surface of the lake. The challenge at hand was how to achieve this safely, quickly, and cost effectively, with water depths of up to 45 meters (148 feet), excavation depths of up to 47 meters (154 feet), blast production rate peaks of up to 30,000 bank cubic meters (39,200 bank cubic yards) per day, blistering summer air temperatures up to 60°C (140°F), and security concerns about the storage of large quantities of explosives in the Middle East region. The solutions to these challenges were engineered by UEE Explosives and centered around the use of a microgel bulk explosive called Rioflex™ and an international team of engineers and operators from three continents. The microgel and accompanying pumping system allowed pumping rates of up to 17,400 kg (38,400 lb) per day, and more importantly, enabled the bulk product to remain as an oxidizing matrix whilst in transport and storage, transforming into an explosive only moments before being pumped into the blastholes. This case study outlines the underwater drill and blast process employed at the Mubarak Pumping Station Project at Toshka, and the novel solutions to the unique challenges encountered.

The Vulcan McCook quarry has been in operation for about 100 years. It is located about 17 miles from downtown Chicago and is surrounded by both industrial and private structures. Recent issues have forced the quarry to blast very close to structures and this will be necessary years into the future. This paper discusses the implementation of electronic detonators to McCook. The first seismograph was developed around 132 AD. Much has happened since then. The “modern” seismograph (> 1920) has seen a lot of changes. From falling pin seismographs to magnetic tape units to today’s Z-curve analysis models, the blasting seismograph remains a necessary and useful tool to the blasting community. But why so many changes? What forces drive the advancement of the seismograph? There are many answers and aspects to this question. Research, regulation, and technological advances are the primary forces behind innovation in our industry. But these three forces also drive each other. Research drove our industry from displacement seismographs to particle velocity seismographs. Technology took us from 80 pound seismographs to units weighing less than 5 pounds. Regulation (and litigation) - the driving forces behind the Z-curve analysis units. How have these innovations helped today’s blaster? Have there been any negatives? It is important for today’s blaster to understand how we got here and why.

SAFEX International, as the name suggests, is a global organisation, which has the fundamental objective of improving the safety of operations concerned with the manufacture, storage, transport, and use of commercial and military explosives and pyrotechnic products throughout the world. It is a nonprofit making organisation of manufacturers of explosives from all parts of the world, founded in 1954 with the aim of exchanging experiences within the explosives industry. Every third year SAFEX organises a Congress during which members present papers on selected themes and discuss reports of significant incidents that occurred since the previous Congress. Admission is for SAFEX members only, thereby creating a safe environment for discussing problems “within the family”. The XV Congress will celebrate the Association’s 50th anniversary in Geneva where it was founded. An overview of the Congress indicates its structure and covers aspects such as the training event, technical seminars and the themes for the plenary sessions and associated workshops. The paper also highlights the special event for the chief executives of member companies and the review of incidents that occurred in the industry since the last Congress. The Congress concludes with a social programme for delegates and their partners on the last day.

In the early 1980s, a method for controlling blast vibrations other than by modifying the Scaled Distance came into use. Research studies had indicated that blast vibration could be simulated by detonating a signature hole with the vibration monitored at critical locations, and then using a computer to superpose the waveforms with varying delays. By choosing delay times that create destructive interference at frequencies that are favored by the local geology, the “ringing” vibration that excites structural elements in houses and annoys neighbors could be reduced.

Flyrock is a complex issue involving interaction between the charging crew, the blast design, and the local geology, and once conditions on the shot meet certain criteria, the probability of a flyrock incident becomes unacceptably high. It is essential that flyrock awareness be built into the blast design process, requiring an engineering approach to understanding and controlling the outcomes and managing the associated risks. Based on previous studies of flyrock and published literature relating to fragment motion at high velocity in air, the equations to predict maximum flyrock range, and the size of particle achieving the maximum range, for blasts of varying rock density, hole diameter, explosive density, and state of confinement have been developed. These equations, and other associated correlations, permit the flyrock footprints to be established for any charge configuration, in any size blasthole, in rock of any density, and with particles of any known shape factor. The equations developed, and the mechanisms they reflect, allow engineers to go a long way towards understanding the primary factors controlling flyrock generation, including the rock mass, the blast design, and the quality of blast design implementation, i.e. the human factor. The paper presents guidelines as regards use of the equations to establish personnel clearance distances as a function of charge design and implementation, and equations to estimate appropriate stemming lengths when blasting must be conducted close to occupied or sensitive structures. The equations are amenable to definition of, and quantification of Flyrock Risk.

The energy output of crushed AN/FO, crushed AN/FO mixed with Aluminum (5%, 6.4% and 9.4% A1 by mass) and a commercial emulsion explosive has been measured using a detonation calorimeter. The charges had a diameter of 10 mm and were heavily confined by a 11 mm thick copper shell. In order to achieve stable detonation glass microballoons were used in the explosives so that the density of the AN/FO charges would be around 1.1 g/cc. The charges were detonated in vacuum and the detonation products were analyzed using gas chromatography. It was found that energy values were very close to calculated values obtained by ideal detonation codes.

In 1998, the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section of the International Society of Explosives Engineers formed a working group to collect and compile a list of regulations limiting ground vibrations from blasting. The goal was to locate those countries, states, provinces, and cities that have such regulations, identify which governmental body enforces them, and determine what limits on ground vibrations are imposed upon the blasting operations. In the course of this study, data was collected from over 60 jurisdictions where peak particle velocity restrictions range from non-existent to very stringent. Some of the regulations were found to be based upon standards grounded in good science, while others possess little or no technical justification. This presentation will summarize the findings of the subcommittee, focusing primarily on what the limits are, which type of blasting operations must adhere to them, and to what structures they apply. The degree to which these regulations are based upon valid scientific and engineering research will be discussed. The work described in this paper comprised the master’s thesis work of the primary author and was conducted at the Missouri S&T experimental mine. The objective was to determine if rubber tractor treads could be used as an alternative material for blasting mats. These treads are made from steel cable and vulcanized rubber and are very tough. However, once they reach the end of their life on mobile equipment, they are destined for a landfill, or dump site, because they are too tough to recycle. A potential alternative use for them is as blasting mats. Several discarded treads were obtained from Kolb Grading in St. Louis.

Statutory records must be held to preserve operational licenses and well-maintained monitoring records are a vital defence for today.s litigious society. During the past year, the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM), McGill University, Montreal, has been involved with INCO Ltd.'s Manitoba Division in investigating the extent and mechanisms of blasthole deviation. Drilling accuracy can well be regarded as perhaps the single greatest "controllable" factor influencing dilution in INCO's open sloping operations. As INCO and other underground mines seek to minimize dilution, while attempting to maximize productivity, issues of drilling accuracy become increasingly significant. It is important therefore, that means exist by which true blasthole trajectories can be determined, so that if needed, modifications to hole loading instructions or redrilling of holes can be ordered, thus avoiding poor blast results.

Blasting is the application of highly complex science that, in some cases, could be viewed as an art. Many variables are involved in a blast, including geology, pattern design, timing and firing sequence, and explosives selection. Assuming that better results can be achieved by only increasing the powder factor is inaccurate. The Drill-to-Mill (D2M) concept has been in the mining industry for over two decades. The D2M approach is commonly viewed in an oversimplified manner, assuming that by simply increasing drilling and the amount of explosives used (both of which add operational costs), the downstream value will be created. An optimized D2M initiative should combine the smart application of explosives at the beginning of the mining process, matching the dynamic properties of the rock to the explosive selected to improve the efficiency of the energy created by the explosive to the rock mass being blasted, and to bring benefits to the mining operation across the entire mining and processing value-chain. This paper reviews the principles behind matching the shock impedance of the rock and the explosive and compares the traditional use of explosives versus the smart application for two hypothetical blasts.

Detonation pressure, or Chapman-Jouguet pressure, is an intrinsic property of an explosive, and like detonation velocity, is an indicator of explosive performance. Pressure and velocity are also important for calibrating computer codes and for other calculations such as the stress imparted to rock or metal by an explosive. The detonation pressures, P~cj, of many "ideal" explosives have been measured indirectly by recording some hydrodynamic flow variable other than pressure, with P~cj being inferred from hydrodynamics and the assumed Chapman-Jouguet equations. One such method is the difficult and expensive "aquarium technique''.] Commercial explosive manufacturers generally rely on estimates of P~cj generated by computer codes not explicitly designed for non-ideal explosives typically used in commercial applications. Over the last decade, U.S. national and government laboratories have developed in-situ gauge techniques such as the manganin gauge, for direct measurement of detonation pressure. Manganin is an alloy of copper, manganese and nickel, and is ideally suited for use as a pressure transducer because its electrical resistance changes with pressure, but is nearly constant with changes in temperature. A simplified manganin gauge technique adapted for use at a commercial test site is described and some initial results from measurements on commercial emulsion explosives are presented.
