The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

Drill and Blast (D & B) is one of the main operations in the mining production cycle, which aims to fragment rock according to a pre-defined plan for proper loading, haulage and processing specifications. In this sense, data from a Brazilian iron ore mine was analyzed, given emphasis on blasthole length, subdrilling and stemming. The D & B report, including mining data such as number of blastholes, length, and diameter and stemming aspects, was analyzed in order to be able to compare these results with the blast design. The study showed significant differences between the designed blasting pattern and that one obtained by the operation. As a consequence, problems such as inadequate fragmentation, incorrect size distribution and loss of energy, were identified. For example, when stemming has a different length than it should have, noise and flyrock can occur, including inadequate fragmentation and vibration in both situations. Therefore, a comparison between the usual D & B procedures and recommended D & B design based on literature reveals the most important deviations and their consequences. The study intends to identify solutions for simple problems, improving D & B operations and safety practices.

The restrictions imposed by the Brazilian environmental legislation regarding natural caves lead to a block of substantial amount of mineral reserves. Mining activities can released caves, as long as the company ensures that the activities will not cause any damage to them, requiring profound and time-consuming studies. Since the use of explosives in the mine are potential sources of some damage to any structures, it leads to a deep need for controlling the rock blasting activities. In this context, the maximum charge per delay used in operations close to cave regions must follow some internal blasting assumptions that have been developed during specific tests and mining activities. By the seed wave technique, it is possible to determine the behavior of a seismic wave, which travels through a rock mass and it is generated by blasting a known explosive charge. This technique has proved to be an effective tool because it is able to accurately include the physical characteristics of the rock and different lithologies. This paper discusses about modelling blasting induced vibrations in order to improve caves protection, which surround the mining operations.

Mining tradition holds that a parallel round underground can not be any deeper than it’s smallest face dimension. ln other words, a mine using a 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’ (7.3 m) wide room and pillar mine, the deepest pull that can be achieved is plus or minus 12’ (3.7 m). After experience with decking of rounds in a 12’ (3.7 m) diameter shaft to achieve more than 12’ (3.7 m) advance per round, the concept of deepening the pull on horizontal parallel rounds seemed to be a feasible concept. Tests were conducted in a conventional room and pillar metal mine with a round size of 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’(7.3 m) wide. Standard rounds were drilled with a 16’ (4.9 m) steel as parallel rounds to an average depth of 14.5’ (4.4 m). The average depth of pull on these rounds was about 13’ (4.0 m). Using the available drilling equipment, 20’ (6.1 m) drill steel was used to drill holes to an average depth of 18’ (5.5 m). Five rounds were drilled and shot with a resulting aven$e pull of 16.2’ (4.9 m) or 90 % of drilled depth. Rounds were designed with decked bum cuts to maximize depth of pull in the cut area An innovative method of de&mining drilling accuraq was used to estimate it’s effect on depth of pull in the rounds. This method used a standard automatic 35-mm camera and scaling to determine the average drill deviation for many of the holes in the rounds.

The period from 2009 to 2012 has witnessed a large rise in the number of blast-generated fume events in Eastern Australia, where highly visible oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are produced from coal mine blasting. Fume production mechanisms have been poorly understood by mine operators, and practical measures to reduce fume were initially elusive. Over time, data on fume events has been collected and analysis has pointed to a range of contributing factors associated with fume production.

The following is a case study of how LuckStone Corporation improved their blast monitoring and documentation program. A number of resources already at their disposal have been utilized to improve the body of data collected from each blast. The tools being used include GPS, aerial photos, and a user-friendly push button format excel spreadsheet. The data collected include product by product records of materials used, distances to all concerned neighbors, seismograph data, etc: The spreadsheet has been designed to perform an ongoing analysis of blasting trends. The program has been carried out at a corporate level and is in use by blasters at each location. This paper addresses the advantages and drawbacks of this program. It also addresses the ways in which the various tools were integrated, Discussed as well is the need for simplicity when bringing “new” technology to the field and the steps taken in familiarizing the end user to changes.

Alabama USA based Drummond Ltd. operates two open pit mines in the Cesar Coal Basin of Northern Colombia. The mines produce a combined total of over 25 million tons (22.7 Mt) of thermal coal per year which is transported by rail to Puerto Drummond, a direct ship loading facility, where it is exported to over 15 countries. The company has proven and probable reserves in excess of one billion tons of thermal coal.

A simple and cost effective technique to increase fragmentation and burden velocities without making major modification to the overall blast design is with ALTERNATE VELOCITY LOADING OR BOOSTERING OF ANFO. The technique requires the placement of a cartridge or slug of explosive, having higher density and detonation velocity than ANFO, every few feet in an ANFO column. The greater the difference in density and detonation velocity of the Alternate Velocity Load to ANFO, the more pronounced are the results. Emulsions were selected as the Alternate Velocity test explosives because they detonate closer to ideal conditions than most other commercial explosives.

This paper will be presented jointly by El Dorado Chemical Co. and Arch of Illinois. It will deal with the simultaneous blasting of multiple overburden seams in surface coal mining. With the development of a new pit in Southern Illinois, production personnel with Arch were faced with serious equipment cycling problems. The solution to the problem was the development of a procedure that reduced drill movements on the highwall.

To meet the needs of South Korea's rapidly expanding economy, a large number of infrastructure projects are under way to improve transportation efficiency within the nation. These projects include high-speed rail links between major population centres and improvements to the road network. Being densely populated and geographically mountainous, infrastructure development in Korea requires a significant amount of tunnelling. Owing to the predominantly hard granitic nature of rock, drill and blast is the preferred method of tunnel advance. The Korean tunneller, however, faces the same pressures as those of his international counterpart in that both cost and production targets need to be achieved while meeting expectations of both community and regulator.

Blasting is the most effective and economical tool available to fragment and move rock for most applications. If properly executed, it can improve down-stream operations such as loading, hauling and crushing. It is not possible, however, to have full control over the energy released by the explosives when a poorly designed blast pattern is used. A poorly designed blast can produce serious damage to equipment and create a potentially hazardous condition to people. Advanced mining technology has been developed to address these potential hazards and optimize the blast pattern. This profiling technology can assist with blast planning and provide quick, precise data about the condition of the rock structure to be blasted. The 3G BlastMetrix system presented here uses three-dimensional (3D) stereo photogrammetry to model the rock mass in a fast, practical and safe manner. Through the image overlapping method, a 3D model is created with thousands of points that provide a significant amount of data regarding geology, geometry and topography conditions. The blasting plan can then be made in a way to optimize the rock fragmentation and avoid areas that could create flyrock. This paper is a case study concerning usage of stereo photogrammic surveying and borehole survey systems in a blasting operation at the Brazilian Quarry, Incopel. One 3D image of a drilled bench was generated using photogrammetry survey technology and the borehole survey data collected using the rodded Boretrak borehole survey system. Utilizing the minimum burden profile reports, explosive loading could be done accurately, resulting in an optimized blast with good heave and fragmentation as well as increased safety.

This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

SAFEX International, as the name suggests, is a global organisation, which has the fundamental objective of improving the safety of operations concerned with the manufacture, storage, transport, and use of commercial and military explosives and pyrotechnic products throughout the world. It is a nonprofit making organisation of manufacturers of explosives from all parts of the world, founded in 1954 with the aim of exchanging experiences within the explosives industry. Every third year SAFEX organises a Congress during which members present papers on selected themes and discuss reports of significant incidents that occurred since the previous Congress. Admission is for SAFEX members only, thereby creating a safe environment for discussing problems “within the family”. The XV Congress will celebrate the Association’s 50th anniversary in Geneva where it was founded. An overview of the Congress indicates its structure and covers aspects such as the training event, technical seminars and the themes for the plenary sessions and associated workshops. The paper also highlights the special event for the chief executives of member companies and the review of incidents that occurred in the industry since the last Congress. The Congress concludes with a social programme for delegates and their partners on the last day.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research on the secondary explosion hazards associated with the mining of oil shale under gassy mine conditions. Explosive incendivity tests have been conducted in a 28 m~3 (1000 ft~3) gallery to evaluate the relative incendivity of experimental emulsion-ANFO blends. The incendivity was measured by determining the minimum inert stemming requirements for preventing the ignition of a methane-air atmosphere by the discharge of hot detonation products from a 5.7 cm (2.25 in) diameter borehole.

As part of a $3.5 billion program to improve the antiquated waste water system in the city of Atlanta, the Nancy Creek Tunnel is being constructed across the northwest portion of the city. This tunnel is over eight miles long and is being constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for the majority of the tunnel and conventional drilling and blasting for three shafts, starter and tail tunnels and four connecting tunnels, totaling 2400 feet in length. An extensive public relations program was developed for this project. A group effort by the owner, engineer and contractor produced a public relations program that both informed and educated the public of the anticipated perceptions and effects of the blasting and TBM activities.

Blasting operations took place on Channel coast NW of France to extend Flamanville Nuclear Power Plant (EPR new generation). The closest operating reactor building was monitored by a 24 remote vibrations transducers network to fulfil, on one hand, the severe environment constraints and satisfy high degree of productivity required by the project, on the other hand. Although these requirements usually are incompatible, this challenge compelled to introduce a seismic modelling technique to optimize blast designs using electronic initiating system. The “Hybrid Seismic Modelling” (MSH) uses blastholes signatures (seismic vibrations records) which are greatly dependent on geology and alteration of rock mass, explosives, charge geometry, blast configuration, and the final excavation shape. In order to respect severe vibrations limits, excavation layout was divided into areas with specific blasting modules - type and number of charges, single charge, initiating sequence. Thanks to this technique, it has been possible to reach lowest blasts vibrations levels and a better productivity compared to classical blasting operation at the same location in the past. After the modelling method presentation - principle and use precautions, technical improvements are reported.
