Explosive initiated afterblast dust explosions can occur in high sulfide ore mines when the flame generated by the detonating explosives ignites the sulfide dust produced from the blast, from previous blasting, or from other mining activities. The dust explosion can be a devastating, self-propagating fireball that will damage or consume any flammable object in its path. Damage to ventilation tubing is a frequent occurrence. These explosions also produce large quantities of sulfur dioxide and other noxious gases that can take several hours to clear from the mine. Thus, these occurrences can result in substantial losses in productivity to the mine.

Determining the transitions from run-up to optimal cut length and optimal cut length to run down, without bias, from the penetration of a linear shaped charge (LSC) is difficult. The stresses applied to the targets during explosive testing can distort the targets in such a manner that determining the true distance of cut, penetration, or fracture can be demanding. Through the course of this research, it was observed that the researchers made many of the errors involved in the collection of data. Among these errors researchers found problems in: determining and fitting the sample to a single plane from which to read measurements, determining where along the path of cut the three phases of penetration transition, and the precision of measurement based on handheld tools and the human eye. This study looks at three methods of recording the data of a series of linear shaped charge tests. The tests resulted in samples which are not ideal for measuring with common laboratory devices like measuring tapes, calipers, or rulers. The first method utilized these common laboratory devices and the difficulties the authors experienced are described in this paper. The second and third methods involve digital photography, image manipulation, and the use of AutoCAD. Methods two and three are then compared to the simple observational method and discussion is made in regards to the precision and accuracy of each method.

A constitutive model for the simulation of fracture and fragmentation processes in rapidly loaded rocks is studied. The model was included in a wave propagation finite element code. The results obtained from two different configurations of explosive charge and reflecting surfaces in a plane strain problem were studied. The evolution of the time-dependent fracture pattern is presented.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, "The cheapest crushing is done in the pit", appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of: powder, selected wear materials and electricity; indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone.

An increase in construction and quarry operations has necessitated blasting activities in areas once considered rural and in the close proximity of transmission pipelines. A method to determine the maximum allowable bending stress by the formulas outlined by the Battelle Memorial Institute report of October, 1962, and the assumed stress comparison with actual measured data is presented. A direct relationship between pipe stress and ground particle velocity is shown, and a method to predict stress by relating stress to charge weight and distance from the shot point is discussed.

The phenomena of post detonation gases in muckpiles is reasonably well known. It causes the 'rumbling' noises occasionally heard after a blast in open pits or quarries and is thought to occur due to initiation of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, etc. by 'hot' spots within the muckpile. The problem usually occurs with highly aluminized products, but can occur with any oxygen deficient product. This phenomenon was never a problem underground due to restriction on access to blast areas, ventilation criteria, etc. until the advent of large diameter blastholes and particularly their use for specialized applications such as drilling for blasting down 'hang-ups' in ore passes.

Qinling Tunnel is the longest tunnel in China. The rock stratum is very hard rock - intact mixed gneiss. At the beginning of the construction, drift-pilot excavation is very costly due to the use of regular drill and blasting methods. After tests on the acoustic impedance match between rock and explosive, watergel explosive, which has a high velocity of detonation and high brisance, has been used for hard rock blasting. In addition, different cut plans have been compared. It was found that four-large-hole cut is the most effective. And the number of drillholes and specific charge cut down and the average advance reaches more than 94% of the blastholes depth. Thus, the difficult problem of hard rock blasting in drift pilot is successfully solved, while safe and quick construction is guaranteed.

"Due to a drainage problem, the Lanzhou to Chongqing high-speed rail line had been out of service during the 2015 wet season, so a drainage tunnel is to be constructed for the line and required to be accomplished before the 2016 wet season. This drainage tunnel is only 5 meters below the line which is in service, therefore blasting vibration needs to be strictly controlled. This paper introduces all theapplied blasting methods, parameters and detonation throughout the entire project, finally bringing in the electronic detonator stagger phase technique and corresponding time difference for detonation."

Confined explosives upon detonation produce a chemical reaction generating expanding gases that result in fragmentation of matrix a chemical to mechanical transition. A 100% energy conversion during transition is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. There are numerous variables that affect energy transition. Although fragmentation is the most often used criteria to determine shot efficiency, the escaping energy profile provides additional data as to the efficiency of a blast. Escaping energy can also have deleterious effects in the form of ground motion.

Numerous large diameter water wells are used to dewater the pit at the Sleeper Mine. Occasionally, a well will be located inside the boundaries of a blast. Although one might expect that wells so located would become inoperable due to blast-induced damage, in most instances this has not proven to be the case.

Active avalanche control is the intentional triggering of avalanches while people are kept out of the hazard area. Explosives are frequently the most effective tool for triggering avalances. In a highway setting an avalanche control program will reduce total highway closure time, while providing greater safety to motorists and maintenance personnel. Avalanche control with explosives is effective when the snow is somewhat unstable and almost ready to slide naturally. Forecasting this condition involves having a network of local meteorological stations, examining snow structure, using mountain weather forecasts, doing snow strength tests, and having the results of ski and explosive tests. The method of delivery of explosives to an avalanche starting zone is governed by the accessibility of the starting zone. Common methods include; hand placing or throwing charges, remote delivery cableways, or "trams", surplus military weapons, and a compressed gas charge launcher, or "Avalauncher". Charges dropped from helicopters are also occasionally use. We have increased the effectiveness of our program by use of large elevated charges. Efforts are being made around the world to develop and utilize better methods for the safe, remote initiation, but procedures have varied dramatically between individual control programs. There is now a movement to review and standardize operational guidelines for avalanche control. Highway avalanche control is often done at night, during winter mountain storms. Heavy rain or snow, high winds, and high avalanche hazard, are common work site conditions. Commercial and economic pressures are increading, so methods that redice highway closure time are important. There are also many safety issues to be addressed in avalanche control work.

The Yarrie Iron Ore mine is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia some 200km eastsoutheast of Port Hedland, the closest large regional centre. The mine is owned by BHPIO who has contracted a large Australian mining contractor Roche Bros to be responsible for the total mining, crushing and trainloading functions. This paper describes a drill and blast optimisation program, resulting from the introduction of a new emulsion matrix called Titan@ Red used to manufacture both HANFO and pumped emulsion ANFO blends.

Construction of a dock facility for the Lake Erie Development Project of Stelco Steel involved underwater blasting in commercial fishing waters near Port Dover, Ontario. The most stringent environmental constraints were imposed and a monitoring program involving water overpressure recordings, using equipment developed specifically for this assignment, correlated with observation of caged fish specimens at various distances from the blast source, was undertaken to determine the effects on fish life and to establish whether a protective air-bubble curtain system should be installed around each blast area.
