Destructive wave interference has been studied in theory for many years. In application however, limited information can be found. Recently, circumstances have enabled a multidisciplinary team to utilize electronic detonators and seismograph analysis to create destructive wave interference in an underground production blasting application. Springfield Underground, located in Springfield, MO, in conjunction with Orica, ETI, White Industrial Seismology, and the University of Missouri – Rolla has shown the ability to use destructive wave interference in underground blasting to reduce ground vibrations directly above.

The paper presents the results of several industrial and laboratory blasting, crushing and grinding tests and experiments investigating how blasting can influence the subsequent crushing and grinding operations. The paper also describes how these results can be used in order to optimize the entire comminution process from solid ore to a semifinished or marketable product. Two cases are presented, one looking at the processing of fine grained taconite ore, and the other discussing the processing of raw milling product for cement burning.

The challenge of a Bulk Trucks or Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMUs) manufacturer is to take the objectives of the regulatory agencies and the explosives manufacturers and responsibly design and build MMUs that are safe, compliant, and cost effective without compromising serviceability.

Business says that location is a primary component of being successful. So too is the importance of location in blasting. For blast seismograph data to be useful, the location of the blast and seismograph must be clearly documented. Another location of importance is that of a nearby structure. Establishing the spatial relationships between the blast, seismograph and nearby structures, allows the blaster to correctly interpret the data, evaluate the performance of the blast and gauge the validity of any complaints.

This paper describes the application and results of a more efficient method of breaking boulders using dynamite and water. This method is being used for the disposal of boulders that result from pinnacle and cap rock remaining after blasting on highways and job sites. This method is a faster and less expensive use of dynamite to reduce oversized boulders than the conventional rock hammer. The problem with excessive fly rock has been substantially reduced when using this technique over traditional methods.

At the time of my visit to the Peoples Republic of China I was employed by the E.I. DuPont Company as a Technical Specialist in the Explosives Department. The purpose of my visit was to observe the use of explosives in mining and tunneling in a coal field 500 miles south of Peking near Hsu Chou in Kiang Su Province. The DuPont Company was preparing a proposal for the sale of a Tovex water gel plant to the Chinese Government.

Coal strip mine operators in Western Canada often mine steeply-dipping multiple coal seams in mountainous terrain. The ability to fragment the rock waste layers above and below these seams with minimum disruption of the seams in large blasts normally involves decked charges in large rotary boreholes. Mining these seams may take two or more separate blasts to break the waste wedges above and below the coal, but these wedges can be blasted in a single shot for better mining efficiency.

A 440 Volt AC power line is a typical power source for energizing electric blasting cap circuits in driving hard rock tunnels. A common misconception exists that the caps actually see 440 Volts. This paper describes an analysis of the entire blasting circuit determining the current flowing and the voltage drops through each component. If, from such an analysis, one determines that the current to the caps is too low or too high, the components that require changing are easily recognized.

Explosives provide a very concentrated source of energy which is often well in excess of that required to adequately fragment the surrounding material. Blast design, environmental requirements, production requirements and the lack of detailed insitu geological data generally limits the degree to which the explosive energy distribution within the blasthole can be significantly altered using, for example, different explosive formulations or variable loading techniques. However, increased flexibility can often be exercised over a blast through the use of air-decks.

The Bureau of Mines has monitored structural responses to airblast overpressure produced by munitions disposal at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. The Purpose of this study was to determine if the blasting caused vibrations, airblasts or structural responses that could possibly be responsible for cracking or other damage observed in nearby residences. Monitoring took place during a 3-month period at 10 selected residences surrounding the plant. By the end of the monitoring period, nearly 2300 blast-related events had been recorded.

Quadrex-L is a two component liquid explosive which was developed by J. S. Brower & Associates, Inc. to facilitate handling and shipping, and use in unique applications, while emphasizing safety. It may be advantageously used for all explosive applications. Quadrex-L can be introduced into a preinstalled container configuration and may be easily drained or flushed from these containers when necessary to do so. This characteristic can be effectively utilized to reduce the hazard period during assembly or disassembly operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded PCL Civil Constructors the project to build a new visitor's center and parking lot structure at the Hoover Dam. The excavations for these structures present many blast design challenges. The visitor center, a 30 foot deep excavation was blasted in the Nevada side of the canyon wall, 600 feet above the existing power plant. This excavation also included a through-cut underneath the existing road that carries the traffic over the Dam between Nevada and Arizona.

The determination of the number of primers necessary to efficiently initiate an explosive column charge is essential to good blasting. If the number of primer is insufficient, the total energy stored in the main charge will not be released. On the other hand, the use of too many primers will be counterproductive and raise the blasting cost. Tests were conducted by the authors to determine the correct priming procedure for a basalt quarry. This paper describes the results of those tests.

New technology in video equipment, such as Super Video Tapes, Super Video Camera Recorders equipped with high speed electronic shutters, and VCR's with editing capabilities make it possible to resolve high speed events to still frames with an event elapsed time of 17 milliseconds (ms). This is far from the 2 ms resolution available with a High Speed 16 mm Film Camera such as the LOCAM at its maximum 500 frame persecond speed, but is adequate for many field blast evaluations.

A large portion of these damages occurs to public roads and highways, forests, agricultural resources, and other property from flooding caused by beaver dams. The United States Department of agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services (WS) program is a non-regulatory Federal program directed by Congress to assist resource owners with managing damage caused by wildlife.
