Most Blasting Programs are developed focussing on the environmental impact with respect to blast vibration and airblast. Compliance with existing regulations or policies limiting the immissions are generally achieved through constrains in the blast design, or monitoring programs. Efficient monitoring programs combine compliance monitoring and blast assessment. Signals, which are obtained in the area of direct influence of the seismic source, can contain valuable information about the blast design parameters. Techniques to analyze blast vibration signals have advanced and can assist in understanding the contribution of individual blast parameters to blast vibration and airblast. Advanced signal analysis encompasses magnitude analysis, Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) and frequency scans in the frequency domain, as well as filtering in the time domain. Through examples, the advanced signal analysis techniques and their limitations are described and discussed, showing the impact of blast timing, timing accuracy, charge configuration and the geology dependent transmission behavior. Optimization criteria and pragmatic monitoring programs can be developed on the basis of the most influential blast parameters. In addition, however, safety and the cost efficiency of the blasting program are essential to the success of an operation. That is where advanced signal analysis techniques can interface with blast planning, computer assisted modeling and information systems. A valuable process can be developed to ensure compliance with existing regulations and efficient risk management for mining operations, while tracking cost and supporting operational decisions. A conceptual blasting information system is presented.

With the ever-increasing population growth and modern trend to urban development, the expansion of utilities is a stable, mad or, and constant source of income for many. Blasting is a "necessary evil" to the utility contractor. It can make or break even the most solvent. Housing development expansion and higher treatment of effluents are causing utilities to appear in more congested areas. This paper discusses some of the aspects of utility blasting in the State of Virginia. Consideration is given to bid procedures, pre-blast surveys, record-keeping and practical application.

Commercial explosive use in China has been dominated by powdered AN-TNT mixes. Water gels and emulsions are now gaining market acceptance because they offer potential for better performance. Although raw material costs for emulsions initially may be more than AN-TNT mixes, the more expensive technology improves sensitization and leads to lower costs overall for mining operations. A recently completed study in northeast China compared microsphere-modified emulsions to AN-TNT and lower-cost emulsions. Testing of microsphere-modified emulsions at several pH levels indicated a high degree of stability and consistency of VOD. Using 42 mm blastholes in underground mines and 170 mm holes in sandstone open pit mining demonstrated the superior performance of glass microsphere sensitized emulsions. Comparisons of explosive cost, drilling cost, secondary blasting cost and muck pile profile were favorable to the microspheres-sensitized-emulsions. Noxious fumes with AN-TNT or with water-based systems that partially fail during detonation are also a concern. Efficient detonation of emulsion products sensitized with hollow spheres appears to reduce fume generation. Prolonged storage or exposure to water also is not a problem.

In the March/April 2006 issue of the Journal, we published an ethical dilemma called “Blowing the Whistle.” We received many interesting responses to the article as requested. Some of the responses are printed here. We’ve also included “Blowing the Whistle” again in this issue as a refresher on page 37. Dear Editor, It is in my own personal belief that it would be extremely important if I were the blaster to take the following steps. 1. Hold an immediate emergency meeting with the contractor to convince them to stop work at this point.2. This meeting would need to be held with all powers that be in this construction company. This helps eliminate the hearsay (excluding the farmer). 3. Explain the entire situation to the contractors as it has been presented to the blaster by the farmer. 4. Recommend calling in an engineering or geological firm with the expertise to investigate this matter immediately, and take all immediate action based on findings. 5. Follow up with farmer allow him to speak, (a.k.a. vent) and assure him proper steps are being taken to come to resolve this matter. 6. Be a good listener, and communicator with the farmer while investigation is being conducted. 7. Should the contractor not want, or take any of these recommendations, the blaster himself and his company should question even working for this company ever again. This in itself would not be the class of people we would want to be associated with EVER.

This study explores how different geometries affect the shock tunnel’s performance and is broken down into three phases. Phase 1: Open arena testing in which theoretical energies produced by the detonation of small (<1.0 kg) charges are compared to actual experimental values. Phase 2: Shock Tunnel testing in which realized energies are experimentally recorded for the UK and S&T shock tunnels. Phase 3: Analysis of the data to begin building a pressure-forecasting tool for the UK shock tunnel given the explosive characteristics, sample size and desired pressure and impulse.

In October of 2002, the author was retained by Public Works and Government Services Canada, on behalf of the Department of National Defense, to design, construct and test the effectiveness of a bubble curtain system at an underwater demolition range, near Victoria, BC. The purpose of the bubble curtain was to reduce the potential for fish mortalities at the site. This paper presents some of the elements of the design, along with the results of overpressure monitoring during blasting and compares the results of fish mortality and animal behaviors with and without the bubble curtain in operation.

This paper presents a fragmentation model for large production blasts. The model uses peak particle velocity (PPV) induced from the blast as a controlling parameter to predict the fragmentation size distribution. The PPV can be related to shock pressure or strain under a given rock condition. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within the blast volume. The grid size defines the calculation resolution of the model. The fragment size distribution is assumed to be in the same form as the crack distribution within a cube (of the size equals to the grid size) surrounding a grid point. The crack distribution in rock from impact is based on the finding from previous researchers (Seaman et al., 1976). The fines and oversized blocks are calculated explicitly. The summation of the size distribution at all calculation grid points over a specified volume of the blast yields an overall size distribution for the volume.

The lift shot is an essential blast design in the execution of mine creation and expansion plans. Whether it be opening a new quarry, creating a new level in an existing operation, or for control of water, lift shots are utilized to create the desired results. Lift shots by their nature differ from conventional production blasts because they have no free faces for relief of the blast. Due to this fully confined state, the primary direction of the rock movement is vertical, and the potential for excessive vibration and fly rock generation is great.

Extensive blasting was required to construct an underground tunnel for a 90 inch sewerage relief line. The tunnel and required excavation extended under an upper middle-class residential area in Atlanta, Georgia for more than a mile and a half and required the use of more than a half million pounds of explosives in the immediate vicinity of houses and residential apartments valued at more than 16 million dollars. Other houses and property valued at more than 80 million dollars were within range to claim blasting damages. An effective blasting damage control program was carried out which limited the number of blasting damage claims to less than 2-1/2% of the total number of potential claims. All but three of the small number of blasting damage claims which were made were effectively denied without any resulting legal actions and less than $3,800 was paid for settlement of the three claims.

As everyone knows, blasters are required to file blast reports of every blast for regulatory purposes. To this day, the authors see many handwritten blast reports. Handwritten blast reports are notorious for containing errors or omissions. This is not because the blaster intends to misreport information. It is because blasters have many tasks to complete in a day, are sometimes in a rush, and could accidentally miscalculate data, omit items, or record incorrect data. In most cases, blasters do not suffer consequences to these errors because blast reports are seldom reviewed in detail. In some cases, such as when a blasting operation undergoes some sort of litigation process, the reports are reviewed in detail and the blaster is ultimately held responsible. If the reports contain errors, the blaster can be fined, have his/her license revoked, or worse. Electronic blast reporting and centralized data management can help reduce or eliminate the potential for accidental blast reporting errors to occur. This paper presents many ways that electronic blast reporting can reduce or eliminate blast reporting errors, decrease time and extra costs spent reporting, and improve efficiencies in the field and the office.

A new alternative technique designed to reduce rock scatter and flyrock during boulder blasting is being developed at UMR. The method uses small explosive charges and is designed for shooting in close proximity, while utilizing common blasting products found on the operators’ site. This ongoing work is being conducted internally as graduate and undergraduate level research. A paper describing the general technique was published in last year’s proceedings. This particular portion of the work was performed as an undergraduate research project as part of the requirements for the explosives emphasis degree option at UMR. Previous model work was performed using cubes of concrete. However, in real life boulders are often flat and irregular rather than perfect cubes. The purpose of this work was to determine how to deal with flatter boulders. The work comprised using different geometry blocks (simulated boulders) of the same volume (1 cubic ft.). Square concrete boulders using an 8.5bag concrete mix were cast using different width to height ratios (varying from 1: 1 to 3.7:1). Single 5/8 inch holes were drilled to 2/3 the depth of the blocks, charges placed approximately l/2 way in to the holes and the holes filled with water. The explosive charges comprised ICI Masterdets containing a OSg High Explosive base charge and incremental added weights of C4 explosive. In the experiments, the block height was progressively reduced and to compensate the charge weight was increased until acceptable fragmentation was achieved. It was found that a significant increase in charge wt is required to achieve the same fragmentation as the width to height ratio increases (the boulder becomes flatter). Furthermore, the increase in charge weight required is proportional to the width to height ratio. Basically, you have to use a higher powder factor for flatter boulders.

Rock excavation in both surface and underground mining is largely accomplished using the drill and blast technique. At the perimeter of such excavations, cautious blasting procedures are often employed to minimize unwanted damage to the remaining rock. Of the several different techniques available, the use of explosive charges with a diameter smaller than the holes in which they are introduced (so-called decoupled charges) is the most common. In spite of the long and widespread use of the technique, a technically sound basis for relating the borehole wall pressure to the explosion pressure is still lacking. The problem of rock hang-ups in underground mining operations has been a continuing one since the days of the “hang-up man”. This position commanded the highest pay of any underground worker in many historical Western U.S. underground bulk-mining operations, due to the occupational hazards of the job. Although underground mining techniques and especially work practices have changed greatly since then, the hang-up problem is a continuing one in many mines which use gravity flow of coarse rock in their transport systems or in those mines where stressed ground causes rock slabs to spa11 and bridge rock passes and stopes. In addition, with mechanized underground open-stoping mining methods now being used in many different types of ore deposits worldwide, this problem has again emerged as a very significant one in many of these highly mechanized operations. This is especially so where the remote operation of loaders is used for removing blasted rock from underground open stopes.

Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) with remote wireless programming and initiation capabilities have been successfully used for almost two years now. This system has been used in blasts mainly in South Africa, but also in South America and other countries in Africa. Initially the industry was slow to accept the idea of remote programming and blasting. The advantages were not fully understood and there were some safety concerns. With close to 200 successful blasts as a reference, a much better understanding exists. The advantage of such a system becomes even more significant when the programming of the detonators is digitally integrated with the blast design software as used by the Blast Engineer. It is now possible to import a survey file into the blast design software, to do the blast design using actual hole positions and to then export the designed firing times directly to the detonators down the hole via remote wireless communication. Mines that have been exposed to this technology favour it to the extent that wireless centralised programming is becoming the norm against which other electronic delay detonator technologies are measured.

The paper presents the vibration and sound emission measurement campaigns carried out in 2007 in preparation for the Ceneri-Basistunnel construction. We also present the vibration measurement campaign conducted during the construction of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel. Both tunnels form an integral part of the Swiss Federal Railway Company Neue Eisenbahn Alpentransversale project (NEAT). This strategic project comprised the construction of several new tunnels. Its aim is the improvement of the existing infrastructure. The improved infrastructure will be able to accommodate a larger volume of railway traffic that is also crossing the Alps at higher speeds. The construction of the Ceneri-Basistunnel commenced in 2006. Both the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel and the Ceneri- Basistunnel are located underneath densely populated areas. Therefore, noise and vibration emissions have to be kept to a minimum and must not exceed applicable codes of practice. In order to identify the most appropriate blasting strategy for the yet to be constructed Ceneri-Basistunnel, blasting trials were conducted. The paper presents the findings of these trials and identifies ways to reduce both noise and vibration emissions from blasting. The construction of the first phase of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel took place between 1999 and 2003. While the first phase is already in operation, the construction of the second phase has been postponed (commencement originally due in 2007). The Zimmerberg-Basistunnel connects the outskirts of Zürich with the city centre. As the tunnel site was not located close to the surface near populated grounds, no special measures were needed to reduce the noise emissions from blasting. However during the construction of the tunnel, the vibration emissions from blasting were monitored on more than 50 locations on the surface. The paper presents the analysis of some of the data. An emphasis is placed on the appropriate synopsis and presentation of data for documentation purposes.
