Understanding the mechanisms which are taking place during the propagation of a stress wave generated by an explosive charge is of high importance in the detection, characterization and prediction of blast induced damage to the rock. Vibrations caused by the detonation of an explosive are suspected to contribute significantly to the extension of the damage zone. Vibration monitoring close to a blasthole is a relatively new field of research, the hindrance being the scarcity of transducers capable of sustaining extreme accelerations without damage. This paper focuses on the vibration monitoring aspect of a blast induced damage study; the experiment took place at Queen's test site and was meant to record near-field vibration as close as 1 m from 100 mm diameter blastholes.

This paper considers the current methods of analysis employed, the validity of assumptions made and the reliability of results and predictions derived; where appropriate, alternative methods are proposed which are more accurate and can be applied with greater confidence. In regard to data collection, new local blasting data has been analysed and conclusions drawn but, due to the restricted amount of space available, reference to data set A only has been made in the text. The problem of mathematical model choice is considered and results for two and three parameter power laws are compared. The very important matter of parameter determination is discussed fully, with major emphasis being placed on the comparative merits of log-log linear, log-log planar and direct power law regression. Supporting data analysis examples are included. Assumptions regarding the normality of ‘best-fit’ regression model residual distributions are questioned and the reliability of associated safety limit determinations is discussed.

The word “Enron” has taken on a totally different meaning since its leaders were caught juggling the books, President Clinton’s reputation was destroyed not by what he did but by how he tried to cover it up, Martha Stewart spent time in prison for not being honest. Our society is tolerant of mistakes we humans make but has become very critical about what we do following those mistakes. The blasting industry is in a similar position. We have all heard the stories of the tree stump that came down through someone’s roof, of the windows that were broken, of the casualties that occurred when a blast was not properly guarded. What was done following these incidents? In the mind of the public, not enough.

The level of performance demanded by the customer will typically coincide with his or her individual needs. In the ensuing years nitroglycerin-based dynamites will continually be replaced by water-based explosives. Until recently, the choice of a high explosive water-based product was limited to some type of water gel. Now, there is another choice. New emulsions are available having several degrees of sensitivity over a wide range of diameters. This paper discusses the properties of these new emulsions, e.g., physical and thermochemical; the relationship between diameter and explosive properties; and the effects of aluminum on total energy. There is also discussion of some of the unique properties of emulsions, their advantages, and how they differ from water gels.

The authors were responsible for a series of large scale multiple chamber charge blasts conducted in the granite mountain area for making construction space on the southeast sea coast in China during 1993-1996. This paper describes the blast design and damage control of one mountain blast 320m in length and 280m in width in the vicinity of two wharfs and a dam. In order to obtain better rock fragmentation and muckpile, the explosive charge should be well-distributed in the mountain. The charge pattern, therefore, was designed with mainly 5 rows of tunnel charge in regular terrain in combination with a chamber charge in irregular topography area and the maximum burden was limited to be less than 38m. In order to protect the dam and wharfs the firing sequence was carefully arranged in 29 intervals and the distance between different charges of the same delay to the dam or wharf was taken into account as an additional delay interval based on the difference of p-wave propagating times. The maximum charge fired in an interval was also limited to less than 34t explosives through dividing the larger charge by a stemming deck.

In the construction field and to a lesser degree in mining, flagman are often necessary to move traffic and or pedestrians through work zones. Everyone readily recognizes that they are essential for the safety of the general public and the employees on the job. What is not often considered is the safety of the flagmen themselves. Actually, let’s call these employees “flaggers” recognizing the fact that there are as many women as men doing this job. The first problem we need to overcome is the misperception that flagging is a low skill function that can be done by any untrained employee. The reality is that the flagger works in a very hazardous position with serious responsibility for the safety of his fellow employees and the public at large. And to do this job properly re q u i re s that the flagger receive sufficient training before being sent out to the highway. It is also necessary to convince the flagger of the value and importance of their job in order to motivate them to do a professional job.testing, documentation of both, and accurate re c o rdkeeping are key aspects of HM126F. Of course, training and documentation requirements will vary depending on the type of operation involved, and there may be some differences in the application of requirements depending on your jursdiction. Nonetheless, failure to train and properly document such training can result in heavy fines and/or penalties.

During my nearly 30 years with ATF, (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives), I conducted hundreds of inspections. In many cases hours of time were wasted because the licensee or permittee, who had basically done everything right, was not prepared for the audit. In these cases, required documents were scattered, personnel were unprepared and no plan was in place. This paper will provide some simple steps to avoid these embarrassing delays. A list of common violations is also provided.

This paper relates some of the experiences, good and bad, of blasting adjacent to residences of the primary author during his 15+ years of field blasting in the Northern Great Plains region. During this highly-rewarding blasting career, the author has become aware of two major issues in residential blasting: 1) What we call “Risk/Reward Ratio.”Some questions that must be asked by the blaster prior to taking on any blasting job include: - Can we eliminate or minimize the risk? - Is the reward worth the risk? - Do I have a measure of “nervous confidence” about the shot? 2) Public Relations. Two key elements to public relations are: - Notification - Education All the education in the world to the adjacent populous of what’s happening, of blasting in general, or of what to expect from the blasting does little good without notification. Good public relations is a key to controlling the cost of liability in a litigious society.

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

However, this synopsis of the changes contained in the September 2000 Orange Book, ATF P 5400.7 was current at the time of this writing. Success of a blasting pattern in Blasting-off-the-solid (BOS) in Bord (Room) & Pillar method of coal mining is judged by the percentage of pull achieved vis-à-vis the yield of coal produced in a blasted round. Improper blast design and distribution of explosives in shot holes normally causes poor breakage i.e. a major portion of shot holes left unbroken resulting into reduced yield per blast. Over and above the disturbance to the roof is also due to excessive vibration caused by explosive energy not properly utilized in fragmentation.

There are wide variations in the values of heats of explosion and detonation as reported in literature. These values are not “stand-alone” or sole properties of the explosives. Specifications of the conditions under which they were determined are necessary to characterize these values. This paper proposes that these values are dependent on their oxygen content and the surroundings their products “work against” upon expansion. Also, the heats of explosion and detonation values can have the same values, but different products, showing that the products can take “independent paths” but have the same values.
