"This study investigates seismic wave propagation from two production shots in a limestone quarry. Our motivation is to investigate the efficiency of two superpositioning techniques. The production shots consisted of an 18 and 20 hole explosive array detonated in a single row with constant delay times of 32 and 20 ms, respectively. A single shot was fired on a neighboring part of the quarry bench. The experiments were instrumented with 20 three component seismometers (35-120 m range). The computer-controlled electronic firing system resulted in firing time deviations of less than 1.4% of desired fired times. Linear superpositioning with the observed single shot data produces seismograms which adequately reproduce temporal effects of the multiple explosions; however, spatial effects due to the extended source length (68-76 m) are not modeled with this method. Linear superpositioning with individual half-space Green's functions for each explosion in thearray convolved with a calculated Mueller-Murphy source produces seismograms which match the time duration of the observed production shot seismograms and differ in absolute peak amplitude by less than a factor of three. Parameter estimation for the source is taken from chemical explosion study results. The single source model differs in amplitude from the observed single source seismograms by a factor of 2.3."

The detonation of explosive charges releases large quantities of energy that can produce rock and soil deformations far from the detonation point Extensive data are available on blasting in general and on the performance of certain structures subjected to blast vibrations. However, only limited information is available on the performance of earthfill dams and other hydraulic structures subjected to blasting. The limited data indicate that, whatever the cause, one or several cycles of repeated strains in earthfill dams may cause residual porewater pressure increases. Limiting the peak particle velocity to less than 2.5 cm/s for operating dams constructed of or having foundations consisting of saturated, loose sands or silts and to less than 5 cm/s for other earthfill dams, should keep strains below the threshold strains required for residual porewater pressure increases to occur. Porewater pressures should be monitored throughout a blasting operation, and they should be allowed to dissipate, if necessary, before subsequent charges are detonated.

To preface these remarks, it is not intended that this paper be a criticism of anyone or any organization involved in drafting the current regulations, for it appears that everyone involved in the process has made an extreme effort to be safe. We wish to show that in this case by making huge safety margins, we have created an unsafe condition in another area. That is by creating vast safety margins in the area of mobile transmitter intensity versus distance scales we have caused a severe handicap in the use of the mobile transmitter in securing blasting areas. The use of these mobile transmitters, which are absolutely essential in clearing areas where there are woods, mountains, or urban structures is virtually eliminated because of the safety factors prescribed in the regulations. We wish to show that these mobile transmitter safety factors are much too great, and can be traded off to increase the margin of safety in the ability to clear blasting areas.

Blasting techniques, which have been used for a long time in Turkey, are powerful and economical tool in producing raw material in mining, quarrying, construction .etc. industries. However, the expansion of such activity has been matched by an increased public awareness of environmental issues, particularly when it occurs in relatively close proximity to residential areas. One of the most troublesome issues facing the mining, quarrying and construction industries when carrying out their blasting activities is that of ground vibration. Because, blasting induced ground vibration can reach to very far distances from the source and has the potential for damage to concern to the inhabitants of property.

A series of experiments have been performed to characterize fragmentation and microcracking in quartz monzonite copper porphyry. The flyer plate impact method was used to generate plane shock waves in rock specimens for impact pressures between 1.6 and 7.3 GPa and impact pulse durations between 1.1 and 7.0 µs. The effects of pressures up to 4.8 GPa and pulse duration on fragment size distributions and microcrack densities were studied. The results show that pressures effect particle sizes to a greater extent at higher pulse durations. However, changes in pressure and pulse duration show little influence on the density of microcracks induced during explosive loading. These results indicate that the nucleation and growth of microcracks in rock subjected to shock waves occur uniformly throughout. A substantial decrease in particle sizes for high pulse durations is attributed to more time allowed for microcracks to grow and coalesce, forming individual particles.

Blasters with the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) have developed techniques for opening access holes in floating sea-ice where the use of conventional drilling equipment is impractical. The blasting techniques have proven successful in sea-ice ranging from 8 to 15 feet thick. Previous published work has treated in detail blasting holes in floating ice from 2 to 6 feet thick.

In situ, most Taconite is heavily pre-fractured; because of the high cost of comminution of taconite, maximum fracture of pre-existing blocks is desirable. Sustained borehole pressure plays a significant role in fragmentation, especially by penetrating pre-existing fractures. The distribution of explosive-induced energy in the burden in three dimensions was calculated. Data on the comminution of single particles was used, with the distribution of energies and the distribution of pre-existing block sizes, to calculate fragmentation for a case study. The calculation agreed well with the measured fragmentation. Sequential comminution events are much more efficient than single ones, and enhanced fragmentation may be possible with alternative blasting practices. Some important factors in the dependence of comminution on energy input are discussed.

We have all heard the stories of the tree stump that came down through someone’s roof, of the windows that were broken, of the casualties that occurred when a blast was not properly guarded. What was done following these incidents? In the mind of the public, not enough.

A method for hybrid modelling of blast vibrations in time domain is developed. Field seismograms of single shot experiments are combined with computer simulations. In this way firing times of blastholes in a pattern can be optimized due to diverse criteria like maximum velocity amplitude and frequency content of the vibrations.

Soft rock mines are distributed through out P.R.C. And drilling and blasting is still the main method of driving a tunnel in these mines. Traditional smooth blasting has been widely and deeply studied and put into practice in P.C.R since 1970s. But the cartridge and blast hole are both columns, the stress field in the rock around blast hole at the beginning is symmetry around hole axis, and the original cracks in the rock can be activated randomly. So serious overbreak and underbreak at the boundary of an excavation occur often, especially when the excavation is in soft rockmass, and the rates of half-hole marks are generally about 50% in medium rock, and 20-30% in soft rock in Chinese coal mines. For the sake of overcoming the situation, we have been studying directed crack blasting since ten years, and have got some obvious achievements in this respect. Slotted cartridge control blasting in soft rock is studied in this paper. Through model experiments, reasonable decouple coefficient range and slot width are gotten, and unsymmetrical dynamic strain field is analyzed. Through underground test in soft rock with a strength lower than 1OMpa in Dayan Mining Bureau, The results of which the rates of half-hole marks and the nonsmooth grades of the cut contours are 83.3% and 1OOmm respectively have been achieved.

This paper outlines the process for designing a hard rock blast in an underground coal mine. The coal mine is located in Western Kentucky and operates four continuous miner units at 7 unit-shifts per day. The mine operates in the Western Kentucky No. 11 Seam with local variations from 4.5 - 5.5 feet seam thickness. The seam has sporadic siderite deposits. Usually these deposits do not significantly interfere with the mining process. When previous siderite deposits were encountered they were small enough to drop an entry for a couple of crosscuts. The blasting plan was called for after a siderite deposit was encountered in the belt entry at about one third of the panel length. The other sides of the panel had been previously mined and sealed so the decision was made to mine through the siderite deposit with the continuous miner instead of abandoning the panel. The deposit was approximately 300 feet in length down the belt entry. Mining through the deposit with the continuous miner was expensive in both terms of production and of wear and tear on the continuous miner. A blasting plan for the siderite deposits was designed to minimize damage to the continuous miner should a similar situation occur.

When speed and accuracy are most necessary in blast preparation an efficient and precise method of wiring is required. After loading a large number of holes and being pressured for time, due to lack of daylight, equipment shutdown, etc., an effective hook-up plan can eliminate many last minute problems. It is the intention of this paper to offer a simplified wiring proceedure which when employed can save precious time and encourage efficient and economical utilization of blasting personnel and material.

As part of a series of seismic experiments designed to improve the understanding of the impact of mining blasts on verifying a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, a sixteen station network of three-component seismic sensors were deployed around a large cast shot in the Black Thunder Mine. The seismic stations were placed, where possible, at a range of 2.5 kilometers with a constant inter-station spacing of 22.5 degrees. All of the data were recorded with the seismometers oriented such that the radial component pointed to the middle point of the approximately 2 kilometer long shot. High quality data were recorded at each station. Data were scaled to a range of 2.5 kilometers and the sum of the absolute value of the vertical, radial, and transverse channels computed. These observations were used to construct radiation patterns of the seismic energy propagating from the cast shot. It is obvious that cast shots do not radiate seismic energy isotropically. Most of the vertical motion occurs behind the highwall while radial and transverse components of motion are enhanced in directions parallel to the highwall.

The Sarcheshmeh Copper mine will be developing its open-pit in order to reach to the remaining ore in the deposit. One of the problems regarding the development plan is the ore handling system from the pit. After its development, the pit depth and its daily production will be increased. Therefore, the present transportation system (shovel and trucks) can no longer be used efficiently. It is necessary to use a new system that can reduce transportation costs and handle the new amount of blasted material at the same time. Studies show that an in-pit crusher and conveyor belt is the most suitable system that could be used in this situation. One of disadvantages of the conveyor belt, however, is its limitation in the particle sizes that it could carry. Consequently, size distribution resulting from the fragmentation process is an important parameter in choosing an efficient conveyor belt system. The size distribution of the fragmentation process also affects the operations following blasting. The determination of this parameter allows the optimization of blast design and explosives. Hence, during this project, the size distribution of blast fragmentation in the different types of ore at the Sarcheshmeh mine was determined by the image analysis technique. Numerous digital pictures were captured of the different blasted faces to prepare a representative sample of each kind of rock. They were then analyzed using the GoldSize image analysis software. Results show that fragmentation in the blasted rock is relatively high. It is therefore expected that an appropriate conveyor belt could be selected for further developing the open-pit mine at Sarcheshmeh.

The principal methods used involved the preparation of an informative video recording which presents various aspects of the blasting operations, the design of a distinctive flyer which is attached to residential doors, and pre-blast meetings for information dissemination.
