The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. The publication, RI8507, from the U.S. Bureau of Mines established an envelope equation that related scaled-distance to peak particle velocity in an attempt to predict ground vibration in the design phase of a blast. This has been further modified by Oriard, Dupont, Konya & Konya, and others to develop more refined prediction models for specific situations to obtain better predictions. While these equations can be an ideal starting point for a greenfield blasting project or a project with no given information, these equations can have errors.

There is not just one ANFO: ANFO explosive behaviour depends significantly on the blasting conditions and on its physico-chemical characteristics. For instance, ANFO effficiency increases whereas AN porosity is higher and consequently loading density of the explosive is less. This can be argued against generally admitted ideas. Therefore, the efficiency of industrial explosives related to ANFO (for example "relative weight strength" or "relative bulk strength") is a tool that must be used with caution.

This study aims to enhance the integration between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarrying by optimizing the size of oversize and bypass fragments, ultimately reducing energy consumption. Using simulations of multiple blast rounds at the dstgroup aggregate quarry in Portugal, the research seeks to refine blasting practices and improve crushing efficiency. Part 1 of this study, presented at the International Society of Explosives Engineers' 51st Annual Conference, introduced a baseline framework for assessing the compatibility between blasting outcomes and crusher requirements. This methodology was applied to two blasting rounds, revealing discrepancies between expected and actual fragmentation results. The assessment raised key questions, including the root causes of fragmentation mismatches and the identification of controllable parameters that can be adjusted to align the particle size distribution (PSD) with the crusher’s optimal input range. Based on these findings, six key modifications were proposed to improve blast performance: (1) reducing the drill and blast pattern to limit boulder formation in the overlapping regions of hole influence, (2) increasing both the size and length of stemming material to enhance energy confinement, (3) decreasing subdrill depth to prevent toe burden issues from toe deviation, (4) modifying inter-hole timing to relieve back hole burden, and (5) improving drilling accuracy. Part 2, presented at Fragblast 14, explored advanced modifications to the initial blast design. The first adjustment was reducing subdrill and altering stemming material resulted in an 11% reduction in D80, a 19% decrease in maximum fragment size, and a 21% improvement in blast fragmentation efficiency. These changes shifted the PSD by 15% closer to the crusher compatibility envelope established in Part 1. Despite these improvements, boulder generation persisted in the front and back rows of the blast. This third part of the study focuses on implementing the remaining recommended modifications from Part 1 to further enhance blast efficiency and ensure crusher compatibility. The findings contribute valuable insights into the benefits of integrating blasting and crushing optimization strategies to achieve more consistent and efficient fragmentation outcomes.

An understanding of explosives science and technology, and the competence to harness it is central to maintaining Explosives capability, national security, and in sustaining a competitive industry. A consequence of eroding this competence is the increased likelihood of explosives accidents. These are often catastrophic as demonstrated by accidents in Nigeria, Russia, Toulouse and Enschede. In addition to the serious loss of life there was the very significant damage to houses, domestic and industrial infrastructure and to the environment at a cost of many millions of Euros.

Meramec Mining Company's Pea Ridge underground mine is presently involved in a large scale pillar recovery program and has made use of both rotary and down-the-hole drills for large diameter blastholes. Groups of pillars have been blasted with water gels in massive blasts which have broken in excess of one million tons of ore per blast. An outgrowth of the pillar recovery program is the combination of rotary and down-the-hole drills to develop vertical "raises" between mine levels. This paper outlines the Pea Ridge procedure for pillar blasting including the use of non-electric caps. Techniques and loading rates are discussed, and safeguards against blasting damage which were developed as a result of the program are presented.

Rendering safe explosives in an urban environment presents a unique challenge due to the safety concerns and disruption to the general public. Potential damage to the surrounding homes, businesses, utilities and transportation infrastructure are some of the major concerns when planning the render-safe operation. Engineering controls to mitigate blast effects, such as damaging air over pressure levels, material ejection and ground borne vibration, need to be implemented as part of the operation. Monitoring of seismic and air overpressure during these operations are needed to protect against potential claims when controlled or unplanned detonations occur. Two recent render-safe operations conducted in and around urban environments dealt with deteriorated, sensitive dynamite and damaged blasting caps. Utilizing innovative neutralization chemicals and processes to render-safe the deteriorated dynamite, while protecting the general public, proved to be the safest, most environmentally responsible and cost-effective way to approach the problem. In both cases, the explosives, old dynamite and detonators were found in abandoned, unlocked magazines. The dynamite was in a significantly deteriorated state, which was evident due to the nitroglycerine found leaking in,around and under the dynamite cartridges. Iron wire permissible electric blasting caps were also found in a corroded condition with exposed explosives and un-shunted lead wires. With occupied buildings within 180 feet (54.86 meters) of the magazines, any procedure (e.g. transporting, countercharging, burning) that could potentially cause a detonation was not an option. In the event of an unplanned detonation during neutralization operations, several blast mitigation methods were employed to safeguard the site. This operation and a similar one with over 1,000 pounds of crushed and buried leaky dynamite were unique since all the explosives were rendered-safe and neutralized on site. The use of advanced neutralization products and filtering processes allowed for a safer, more environmentally responsible way to resolve the problem. The magazines and all residual solids and fluids were tested and confirmed by independent labs to have no explosives residues. The effluents were treated on site, tested and met safe levels, so they were disposed of at a local municipal wastewater facility.

Whilst a significant body of research has been carried into air overpressure levels that arise as a result of the use of explosives, few published studies have actually tried to relate the movement of a quarry face to the resulting air overpressure produced. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to monitor a number of quarry blasts at two different limestone quarries. The first using multiple separately initiated deck charges in a multi borehole blast, the second using single column charges in a multi borehole blast.

ANFO is the most used industrial blasting agent in the world, and is often used as a reference for comparison of other explosives. It is known to work very well under dry conditions in large borehole diameters, whilst in small borehole diameters increasing amounts of toxic fumes (CO, NO and NOz) can be formed. In underground blasting, problems can also occur with reduced visibility caused by unreacted ammonium nitrate and overall composition of the detonation fumes. ANFO is made by mixing Ammonium Nitrate Porous Prills (AN-PP) and fuel oil. A few years ago, the term Track & Trace for explosives was only known in Europe and Brazil at most; the introduction of this technology is experiencing an undreamt-of boom worldwide. More and more countries are enacting legislation to introduce Track & Trace of explosives and follow Europe and Brazil on this path. At present, the world's leading manufacturers are already using such solutions, are in the process of implementing them, or are in the planning process. However, based on the experience gained in Europe, there are outstanding challenges for all manufacturers. These are questions of compliance, logistics, distribution, and, of course, especially, the necessary adaptation of the production environment. However, this development involves considerable effort on the part of the manufacturers. New devices for marking the explosives and digitally recording the data are integrated into the production process. This should be done as cost-effectively as possible, without restricting production capacity and speed, and with as few process changes as possible. This paper uses real-life customer experiences examples to explain paths from project design to real implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of European explosives manufacturers are presented, missteps are described, and solutions are identified. Individual steps along this path are explained, and solutions are told to avoid pitfalls and bottlenecks. Finally, it refers to the risk analysis and concrete examples in implementing the planning into production. Methods of marking various explosives are shown, and the use of Track & Trace to solve logistics tasks in picking and shipping explosives, including the data exchange with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.

In use, blasting powder is exploded by a spark from fuse, electric squib or miner’s squib, or by a primer of some high explosive, the last being employed only in heavy charges on open work. In mining, and sometimes in light charges on open work, blasting powder is made into cartridges by means of a paper tube or cylinder sealed at one end, which is known as the Du Pont tamping bag. Sometimes the paper cylinder is made by the miner by coiling a section of heavy paper, known as blasting paper, around a wooden pin, called a cartridge pin, and securing it with what is called blasting soap. The removal of the pin leaves a cylindrical cartridge open at one end, into which the powder is poured and the top folded and sealed with blasting soap.

Cumulative sum (CUSUM) statistical process control methods have been used in many industries to monitor quality control results. CUSUM charts are a method to determine when small changes in data indicate a major change in results. E.S. Page at AT&T developed the method in 1954. In many blasting situations, vibration and air blast readings vary slightly from blast to blast. Whether the change is significant or not can be hard to interpret from the raw data. CUSUM charts can assist in determining whether a major change is taking place and when the change began.

Mine blast vibration modeling and prediction is becoming more important as a consequence of interactions by mining activity with an ever closer public. Many communities (all over the world) close to mining activity often complain about airblast and vibrations produced from blasting activity. It is important for the mining industry to have tools and understandable methodologies to model and predict blast vibration. These tools can then be used to predict and control vibration at neighboring structures.

In an effort to reduce the cost of bulk explosives, Vigo Coal Company found that the addition of coal mined at their Friendsville Mine, not only reduced explosive costs, but also appeared to actually enhance blasting performance. The Friendsville Coal lies at the base of the Mattoon geologic formation within the Mcleansboro Group of the Missourian Series of the Pennsylvanian Geologic System in Southern Illinois. Vigo Coal Company commissioned VIBRONICS, INC., an independent blasting consulting company to quantify actual blasting performance. Insitu sonic velocity testing of overburden was conducted to determine the P-wave velocity of the sandstone present at Vigo’s Cypress Creek Mine, where the initial testing was conducted. Numerous VOD (velocity of detonation) recordings were obtained for varying blends of ANFO/Coal (now named Carbo*Prill). Cast blast percentages were determined for both Carbo*Prill and non coal blended bulk explosive blasts. The VOD of the coal blended product was intentionally reduced so as to more closely match the P-wave velocity of the sandstone overburden. Explosive blends containing as much as 40-50 percent coal were tested. Explosive blends containing greater than 30 percent coal, have been used in Cypress Creek Mine overburden production blasts. The coal blends appear to produce better fragmentation and yield excellent cast blast performance. Safer mining conditions were also observed. Flyrock potential was reduced. The blasts produced less back break, producing a safer highwall. Stripping dozer and shovel production rose during the testing period and equipment repair costs were lowered due to an increase in overburden fragmentation. Blasting vibrations were reduced, in part due to the lowered detonation velocity of the ANFO/Coal mixture. The Friendsville Coal Seam appears to contain inherent chemical and physical properties that enhance blasting performance. The use of Carbo*Prill has been approved by MSHA, BATF, the State of Illinois, and the State of Indiana. This paper will provide details concerning testing procedures, blast performance analysis, recommendations and conclusions for using this alternative blasting mixture.

During blasting, stress waves propagate through a rock mass, inducing stress and strain changes. This applied deformation affects intact rock, existing discontinuities, mine excavations, and engineered structures in the proximity of the blast. Traditionally in blasting, stress waves are quantified in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV) or peak particle acceleration (PPA), based on the method of measurement and the specified allowable tolerances. During analysis, the peak particle motion is coupled with an explosive source through various scaling laws to develop rock-specific attenuation relationships. Some studies have expanded this practice to the development of damage threshold values based on measured or predicted peak particle velocities. PPV-related thresholds are generally based on empirical models, where observation of overbreak, cracking, or fall-off are used to quantify damage. This method is often paired with the application of elastic plane wave equations to calculate the blast induced strain or the PPV threshold for tensile rock failure. Other factors that must be viewed critically in such models are the methods used to collect and analyse blast vibration data and the application of inappropriate vibration attenuation relationships.

A user-friendly model for environmental effects from underwater explosions is presently available. The model by Munday et al. (1986) is effective for determining fish mortality radii from underwater shooting. The IBLAST program (Coastline Environmental Services 1986) from this model includes estimates for both borehole-loaded explosives for demolition or rock removal purposes and midwater shots. Midwater shots may be used for fish population assessments or some seismic surveys. The program produces approximate mortality distances for planning purposes. IBLAST does have serious shortcomings of which users should be aware.

This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of pressure on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine in various media. The tests are conducted by using saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Different stand-off distances are investigated. Kolsky bars and pressure sensors are used to determine the free-field pressure - time profile of the output of the charge at any location on the vehicle bottom. For verification of the pressure results at certain distances, the specific impulse measured by utilizing different size round plates are employed. In order to investigate the loading mechanisms, high speed cameras are applied. The small-scale test results can be scaled to full scale by using verified scaling laws.

Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.

International Training Resources is a company consisting of personnel with extensive law enforcement and military special operations experience, The staff members are qualified to train and certify, assist and advise law enforcement officers and agencies, at any level, in critical incident policy, procedures and tactical resolutions. Successful critical incident resolution is comprised of many elements of professional skills and personnel. (Command staff, negotiators, snipers, tactical teams, uniform patrol, K-9, bomb squad, etc.) Recently, tactical teams have been developing the capability for the use of explosive methods for rapid entry into crisis locations. This document ‘will briefly describe the environment, operational issues and courses of action associated with developing a complete tactical breaching program for utilization by SWAT teams in response to operational conditions in critical incident situations. This topic is being presented to the I.S.E.E. evaluators under “Interesting Blasting Projects” and “Public Relations” categories. Tactical operations differ significantly from traditional industry practices and we appreciate the opportunity to show the industry other professional applications of explosive materials and techniques. Presently, of the few schools from which law enforcement officers can receive training with explosive breaching methods, International Training Resources is the only company currently teaching and certifying officers which has received total endorsement by the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) and the state blaster’s licensing commission. We have pioneered the combining of law enforcement needs and blasting industry technology to train tactical officers, nationwide, in the mission essential skills necessary for explosive breaching.
