Security engineering is similar to other forms of engineering – the design is guided by the loads, materials, and desired function. For facility design, the load is the threat. Facilities that are designed with considerations for explosive hazards are designed with a shot, or series of shots, of a given size and distance from key locations. These facilities range from office buildings and industrial sites in developed nations to military and police stations in contingency areas. The challenge is the design shots are not often communicated to facility owners and managers. If the hazards change, whether it’s due to an increased capacity to cause damage by a threat or a decrease in capacity by a structure, not knowing the design shot means not knowing if security design needs to change. Blast modeling is an engineering tool that can be used to reverse engineer what a facility is suitable for, as well as be a tool for modifying security design for new conditions. This paper will examine military and civilian examples, including a case study of a military facility that did not know their as-built conditions and had to be rapidly closed; due to the determination their security engineering shortcomings could not be mitigated.

Having been retained as a legal expert for the fatality at the Canberra, Australia project, it made me aware of how good intended blasters profess to be implosion experts. Owners and contractors can be misled by these representations, seeing a video of Directionalized Structures constructed of reinforced concrete may be impressive to watch, but lack sound evidence of the true mechanics of an actual “implosion”; on steel structures more prevalently. If any well intended blaster comes to a determination that he can implode a structure, it should be not be construed he cannot. It should be well investigated that the specific blaster has verifiable experience. What happened in Australia reflects on all end users of explosives. I have heard a direct quote in our project in Alberta, “We don’t want to have what happened in Canberra”. Such a tragedy could have, and should have been avoided. Simple by using the “Right Tool for the Job”. We should sideline egos and economics. Would any competent blaster compromise his or her reputation, company or insurability? More importantly, have an honest conscience knowing that if the proper explosive is available, use it, don’t shortcut it. If possible expand the schedule. Better, yet, examine all avenues before the project, and last, cancel the project. A human life is our best asset and should not be compromised.

Systematic drilling & blasting techniques are currently being viewed in the mining & construction industry as a correct 8z scientific approach for optimization process in rock excavation, as drill & blast costs usually represent major share in total cost of production and also the environmental impacts plays an important role in designing of the operations. Designing a blast is a complex planning task, which for optimization, includes deciding the bench geometry with respect to the rock properties & geology of the area, capacity of the excavators, choice of explosives & detonation method, tiring sequence, etc. Optimization of blast design needs a detailed comprehensive study of all the above intersecting elements. Preblast & Post blast surveys are required for further improvements in blast designs. However, the choice of blast design depends upon the the requisite blasting results opted for and the cost you are ready to pay for the same. The blasting operation, in general, also involves numerous side effects namely, ground vibrations, fly rocks, dust, noise & gas pollution, air blast effect etc. Again these effects can be made tolerable up to a certain extent depending upon the limitations of the environmental obligations as may be specified by the concerned authorities.

Secondary or boulders blasting is a regular feature of quarrying operations in Pakistan, especially in cement and stone crushing industries. The main reason for secondary blasting is the production of a large number of boulders during the production blast. These boulders are larger than the feed hopper of crushers and require further breaking. The complex geometry of boulders, relative lack of restraining burdens, and the availability of number of free faces make this kind of blasting more hazardous than production blasting. Secondary blasts have generally unpredictable results and may cause flyrock, airblast, and over-crushing of rock material. Thus, it is essential to have an appropriate amount of explosive charge/powder factor, and for it to be properly distributed in the blast hole. The greater the amount of explosive over the required amount, the more violent is the blast, which will result in more flyrock, airblast, and excessive crushing of boulders.

Recently there has been an unprecedented marketing effort to promote the advantages of various non-electric initiation systems. This activity has probably been influenced by a major manufacturer's decision to discontinue electric detonator production. Subsequently, distributors of explosive materials, rather than introducing new electric detonator brands, are emphasizing the use of existing non-electric systems. In many cases, such methods fill the need of explosive users in the quarry industry. However, the use of any initiation system should be based on performance, rather than the bent of the market or convenience to the supplier. This analysis is an evaluation of the performance of non-electric systems with emphasis on double trunk line and loop (redundant), as compared to precise electric detonators in use by Martin Marietta. Redundant non-electric detonators, even though more costly, offer the most reliable method of non-electric initiation. However, state-of-the-art precise electric detonators give the best overall performance, except in an environment involving extraneous electricity.

Cave mining offers a flexible technique to exploit large, low grade, deep ore bodies with low operating costs. It is typically done in either a top down approach; i.e. sublevel caving, or in a bottom up approach; i.e. block or panel caving, to extract ore bodies that may have been previously considered unfeasible to mine. Sublevel Cave (SLC) mining, in particular, is a cave mining method based upon the utilization of gravity of blasted ore while the overlying host rock fractures and caves under induced stresses and gravity. Thereby the caved waste originating from the overlying rock mass fills the temporary void created by ore extraction to achieve a controlled collapse of the roof.

Previous studies have shown that the pressure load on a target by a buried explosive charge is not smoothly distributed. The effort reported here was undertaken to explore the mechanisms believed to cause this uneven pressure distribution: jets from the surface originating in instabilities caused by the explosive shockwave interacting with surface irregularities. Small-scale tests using conical, hemispherical, and cylindrical indentations in the sand surface above a buried charge were conducted to identify trends in the velocity and form of the resulting jets. In these tests, the most important factor affecting the resulting jets was the distance between the bottom of the indentation and the top of the charge. Cylindrical indentations resulted in higher jet velocities than those from comparable hemispherical and conical indentations.

Rock blasting is an inherently difficult field to quantify independent & dependent variables and the specifics of how the energy interacts with the material for a number of reasons. Independent variables such as geology are innumerable and stochastic, thus, on a laboratory and full-scale basis these variables are assumed to be homogenous across the desired rock boundary. Dependent variables are difficult to quantify in the laboratory based on the specific aspect of the fracture mechanisms that caused the fracturing. The same variables are difficult to quantify in the field because of the shear amount of material being blasted. The energy interactions with the material are difficult to quantify due to the rate of the reaction and the lack of quantification of independent variables. The second main issue with laboratory scaled rock blasting is the nature of the small form-factor explosives required for use in a scaled setting. These explosives that are utilized, traditionally PETN detonating cord, have a greater ratio of potential energy converted to shock energy rather than gas energy when compared to traditional field explosives, such as emulsion or ANFO. Research over the past decades has indicated that gas pressure has the greatest contribution to rock blasting performance, such as fragmentation and material throw. The factor of varying ratios of energy production has not been discussed in any of the reviewed publications. Publications discuss dimensionless scaling, dynamic similitude, and length-based scaling, however, none of these scaling methods discuss the ratio of energy production. The main focus will be correlation of energy production ratio of shock versus gas to dependent variables. This paper analyzes previous publications within rock blasting and related field as they pertain to scaling procedures and will highlight the similarities and differences in the various publications and detail the observed omitted variables that possibly lead to skewed data.

For assessing the safety of structures during underground explosions, ground particle velocity gives the best damage criteria, and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity has been internationally accepted as the threshold value of safety (no damage). Results of extensive controlled underground explosion experiments conducted by the author to study the effects of ground vibrations on specially prepared concrete blocks, and also on low rise buildings and dams showed that no damage normally occurred when ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Analysis of a large number of accelerograms from a dam site in India also indicated that no damage occurred to normal structures when integrated ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Major damage in well built structures like a dam was noticed for ground particle velocity as high as about 350 mm/sec. These results are also generally substantiated from damage data obtained for various structures during other earthquakes, including Elcentro (1940), Taft (1952), Parkfield (1965), and San Fernando (1971). These studies, therefore, suggest that the damage criteria during underground explosions and earthquakes are similar; and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity seems to be the general threshold value of safety (no damage) against ground vibrations.

Drill and Blast processes in hot and reactive ground conditions are a severe challenge in mining, especially in the blasting process. Our main objective is safety issues without compromising the blasting outcome. Safety concerns include unexpected detonation, product damage, and misfire. However, apart from the issue of blasting safety, it is also crucial to maintain good results such as fragmentation, loader productivity, and ore dilution control. Therefore, we use a different product selection method to produce a safe and efficient blast. Pit Araren is one of the pits of the Tokatindung Gold Mine Project in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, classified as hot and reactive ground conditions that range from elevation of 25mRL temperature could reach to 98⁰C (208,4⁰F) based on actual measurement. The previous practice for blast holes with temperatures above 70⁰C (158⁰F) loaded with the primer that was specifically designed for hot and reactive ground conditions consisting of detonating cord and packages emulsion that specifically formulated to inhibit exothermic reaction then tied in with a combination of non-electric surface delay detonator and detonating cord initiator (short length non-electric surface delay detonator housed in plastic connector).

The technology and the knowledge about the behavior of explosives and detonation accessories allowed to create new products for different situations by the restrictions imposed by the market. In a Brazilian underground copper mine the restriction occurred in the use of high grammage Det Cord in the development heading blasts perimeter holes. Enaex Brazil has developed Densiex UG™ (Low-Density Bulk Emulsion), a water-resistant bulk gassing emulsion with a density ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 g/cm³ to replace the high grammage Det Cord in blasts. That product is pumped in the same Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU) as Enaex Brazil's standard underground (UG) bulk emulsion. This product has a Lower Velocity of Detonation (VOD), vibration, and detonation pressure, which contributes to a better finishing of the drift, lower impact in the support structures, and lower generation on unstable rocks in the perimeter of the drift. This case aims to summarize the results of the work on the application of the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion in perimeter holes in an underground development gallery at an underground copper mine in Brazil. During this work, 10 horizontal drift blasts were performed using the Low-Density Bulk Emulsion, which presented an average density of 0.64 g/cm³, increasing safety, a 25% reduction in overbreak, a 23% reduction in scaling time, elimination of rework, and a saving of $135,000 per year for this business partner that immediately implemented this new product in all blasts at this mine.

"The impact on vibration model accuracy by input data that is inaccurate was previously unknown, butthought to introduce significant error. This paper explores the impact of accuracy of different GPSreceivers, bulk truck density fluctuations, and charge weight location convention on the accuracy of the final vibration model output. GPS accuracy is compared between a professional Differential GPS, a “prosumer” GPS unit and a standard consumer GPS chip commonly found in cell phones. Bulk truck density fluctuations are compared from the density given by the operator and the actual cup density measured in the field. Charge weight locations explored are from the bottom of the blast hole, center of the powder column, and collar of the hole. The findings show that the weakest link in vibration model creation is actually low seismograph accuracy standards. Errors introduced from such are generally greater than those introduced from other sources."

The Colowyo mine is a unique surface coal mining operation because it is a multiple seam pit. Using a combination of a shovel-truck and dragline operation, Colowyo mines 8 seams of coal to a depth of 400 ft. Over the past 3 years a number of operational changes have occurred, one of which is the implementation of blast casting. Through this implementation Colowyo has been able to eliminate over one million cubic yards a year, which would have had to be removed by the shovel-truck operation. This has also brought about a significant decrease in the stripping cost per ton within the dragline operation.
