In the past, cap and fuse has been the only economical and efficient initiation system capable of providing sequential timing, ease of loading and hookup, and unlimited borehole number for backstope rounds. Unfortunately, in spite of these advantages, several negative factors inherent to the system have always been noted. Due to the long, narrow nature of backstope rounds at the Sunshine Mine, the cap and fuse system results in very long, inaccurate delay times. The system was also occasionally unreliable under all the conditions encountered, which in turn could cause potential safety hazards.

In the latest years, the use of innovative blasting techniques has become more frequent in mines all over the world. Such techniques allow the miner to be more aggressive in the distribution of explosive energy into the rock mass, e.g., stretching blasting patterns to improve fragmentation. Considering the different rock mass conditions and more energetic blasting designs, misfired shot events have occurred. After cause investigation, initiators have shown evidences of deformation by impact and/or loaded boreholes have resulted in emulsion desensitization, both presumably affected by dynamic pressure.

Based on CMRI investigations in nearly 50 mines, the authors have developed two empirical formulae for the effective determination of burden and spacing in any kind of rock deposit. Along with charge loading parameters, decoupling effect and bench height, the equations consider rock characterisation parameter by incorporating 'RQD' i.e Rock Quality Designation. The value of 'RQD' may be obtained either by core recovery using diamond drilling or theoretically from the characteristics of joints or bedding planes. The derived equations may be used in any rock mass under varying geologic and charge loading conditions. The Formulae suggested herein, are explicit, simple in form and easily applicable in field purposes. The values obtained from the present equations are verified against various field data generated by CMRI during the past several years.

Due to the advancements in technology it becomes easier to obtain accurate measurements for mining, quarry, and construction operations even in the most remote places. The use of off-the-shelf photogrammetric imaging technology and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more common in the mining industry for blast design and surveying. Pattern optimization, face profiles, pre and post blast volumetric, stockpile measurements and mine mapping are all areas where these technologies can be used with ease.

In order to comply with the latest European Highway Standards, the highway Salerno - Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, had do be widened and upgraded to reduce its vulnerability to earthquakes. Reinforced concrete viaducts, no longer needed for the new road, had to be demolished. Many bridges still to be used for the highway required refurbishment due to 50 years of wind, frost and salt corrosion. This re-furbishment and new construction had to be carried out simultaneously. To keep the highway open dur-ing the renewal process, all traffic was directed to one side of the road. Demolition was conducted ex-tremely close to operational roadways and viaducts, as close as only 2 cm (0.8 in). Care had to be taken to ensure that the stresses (vibration levels), resulting from the demolished pylons and decks hitting the ground, were below the no-damage thresholds for the nearby acceptors (structures receiving the vibra-tion stresses). These structures included bridges, houses and buried pipelines (water, oil and gas). In some cases, care also had to be taken to preserve the existing pylons supporting decks that were being demolished; since the same pylons were going to be used for the new viaducts (bridges). New continu-ous decks in weathering steel replaced the old reinforced concrete decks.

Subdivisions include surface and underground (large and small), metal, nonmetal and coal. The requirements for certification, class of license, available training, types of testing and enforcement practices are discussed. Included are recommendations of some of the industry trade organizations.

There have been many different brands of high precision caps introduced on the US market in the last five years. High precision timing definitely effects the performance of the blast. One should be able to optimize fragmentation and minimize environmental effects with the use of high precision caps and selection of the proper time period. The consumer who purchases the caps may not be fully aware of the tolerances in firing times of caps used in the field. This paper will discuss results of field tests of cap tolerances from an independent study conducted by Precision Blasting Services.

However, the applications of total energy (engine horsepower) in the majority of rotary drilling technology, has remained virtually unchanged over that period. While advancements have been made in components, efficiency, and types of hydraulic systems used on drills, the application of current hydraulic technology to improve drilling productivity has not been interactive with end users. This paper presents an investigation about how the motions of blast induced vibration waves were affected by the presence of the fault planes. This study was carried out at Espey Open- Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, ground vibration components were measured for 8 shots using 9 vibration monitors, considering the direction of the fault. Measurement stations were located around the fault line that intersects the open-pit mine in the north-south direction and on different benches along the fault plane. Then, the data of the vibration components obtained from the 77 recorded events were analyzed and the results were presented.

Hanging Lake Joint Venture recently excavated two conventional 42 foot diameter highway tunnels in the difficult ground conditions of Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. This paper outlines the type and success of the various Controlled Blasting Techniques that were used to minimize overbreak in the portal and tunnel excavations. The different Smoothwall and Cushion Charge loads used in the different ground types are described in detail. Delay Timing and Drilling Pattern variations are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines obtained blasting accident data from the Mine Safety ant Health Administration (MSHA), U. S. Department of Labor. These data were analyzed to determine the most frequent causes of accidents in mine blasting. Accident totals for 1971 through 1981 are tabulated for metal-nonmetal and coal mines both surface and underground. In the past 11 years (1971-1981, inclusive) there has been an annual average of 9 fatal and 121 nonfatal blasting accident victims. Underground mining averaged 6 fatal and 93 nonfatal injuries each year.
