Productivity, customer relations, and effectiveness of work depend to an ever-increasing extent on a functioning logistics system tailored to the needs of the user. Of course, it is not possible to cover and explain all aspects of the logistical requirements of even a small part of an industry, in a single article. The article speaks specifically about the particularities and differences in the logistical requirements in the explosives sector. Starting with questions of safety, handling and quality up to the legal basis, there are special requirements regarding the logistics in the explosives sector. The results of innovative logistics solutions are presented using three examples from daily work practice.

Regardless of the care exercised by a blaster, seismic and acoustic effects produced by blasting can be disruptive and alarming to many people. With the general trend toward larger blasts, increased population, and urban sprawl, as well as sensational accounts of explosives - related incidents by the news media, fear and concern often leave residents searching for damage to their property. As a result, many blasting companies today find themselves at the center of litigation at an accelerating rate. Obviously, the best strategy for handling vibration and airblast complaints is to operate in a manner that does not create grounds for them in the first place. During the bidding process, ask questions. See the actual site to perf o rm an “exposure analysis.” Collect as many facts as possible before blasting including geological issues, contractual obligations, zoning, historical use of site, disruption of daily life to local residents, demographics of the surrounding area, as well as any unfavorable public opinions or prejudices connected with local construction projects or mining operations. A consultation with local pre-blast firms may assist in tracking down previous problems in the area.

In the past, cap and fuse has been the only economical and efficient initiation system capable of providing sequential timing, ease of loading and hookup, and unlimited borehole number for backstope rounds. Unfortunately, in spite of these advantages, several negative factors inherent to the system have always been noted. Due to the long, narrow nature of backstope rounds at the Sunshine Mine, the cap and fuse system results in very long, inaccurate delay times. The system was also occasionally unreliable under all the conditions encountered, which in turn could cause potential safety hazards.

Sharp transient stress waves generated during the delay blasting of underground coal can damage unfired borehole charges remaining in the delay pattern. These tremendous stress pulses in coal bear a strong resemblance to underwater shock waves, despite differences in rise times, damping rates, and scaling relations. "Shock wave" terminology is adopted to distinguish the sharp transient waveforms propagating through the coal from the gas-driven stresses that rift the coal. Reported waveform characteristics of shock waves through underground coal were utilized to design a simulator test for rating the impact resistance of cap-sensitive explosives. Theoretical minimum borehole separations were determined for each cap-sensitive explosive from the requirement that worst-case waves hitting an unfired charge would not exceed its impact resistance rating. Rugged explosives have higher impact resistance and will function properly at smaller borehole separations. Additional work is required to verify the findings from the simulator technique and modeling relations reported here.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of the explosives laws codified in the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970, Title XI. To meet its responsibilities ATF has special agents, inspectors and specialists who regularly interact with the explosives industry. However, with just over 2,000 special agents and 800 inspectors and specialists, it is difficult to visit the almost 10,000 explosives licensees and permittees in the United States.

The detonation characteristics of non-ideal explosives, especially the emulsion explosives, are critically affected by the confinement of case. In this study, we focused the shock wave propagating in case as confinement factor. Therefore, the objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the influence of shock wave propagating in case on the detonation characteristics of explosives in laboratory scale.

AECL Research (AECL) has constructed an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) as a facility for research and development in the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The objectives of the program are to develop and evaluate the technology to ensure safe, permanent disposal of Canada's nuclear fuel waste. Several multidisciplinary experiments and engineering demonstrations are planned for the URL over the next ten years.

I had the opportunity recently to visit a magazine site of a major explosives company. It was fun to see the storage areas again and it was really interesting to see one of the old magazines that probably dated back before my time. Now that’s an old one. As son Tom says, “When Dad was young the Dead Sea was just sick.” While the magazine has been upgraded with a modern lock to match today’s standards it still has the old tumbler lock that is opened with the large bronze key. Those old tumbler locks were just about standard on magazines years ago. Those bronze keys were heavy and would make a good display item today or maybe a substitute for a blackjack. I don’t think the old locks would stop the modern criminal but then in those days we were all less sophisticated. And maybe I shouldn’t say this but honesty was a bit more prevalent then. Maybe ‘cause old fashioned police brutality still prevailed.

Africa has a long history of mining and has been one’of the world’s greatest sources of gold and other mineral resources since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs. Mining in Africa has been dominated by South Africa since World War II. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, other African countries are beginning to slowly catch up with South Africa. Ghana, formerly called the “Gold Coast” is located on the West Coast of Africa. Ghana has been involved in mining activities for well over 100 years. Most of the mining activities centered on the mining of gold and were to a large extent limited to underground mining methods. With a more liberal economic policy regarding the exploration and exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources, mining activities are beginning to evolve to a much larger scale. Drilling and blasting which is an important aspect of this evolution is also changing due to the involvement of foreign-based mining and explosives companies.

There have been many papers and articles presented over the last 60 years questioning the relevance of the 8-millisecond blasting delay window as an ‘Industry rule of thumb’. The concept of using delays between blast holes to minimise vibration is well understood and agreed upon. The means for evaluating what that minimum delay interval needs to be, for a particular site given their ground conditions, design parameters and blasting techniques, is much less established. Some sites haven’t even recognised their required minimum delay value may not be 8-milliseconds!

After 30 years of development and introduction, electronic initiation systems are now well established in blasting applications, both mining, quarrying and civil works. In terms of blast technology, it could be considered that timing is the new challenge: how to define the most appropriate sequence to improve fragmentation, reduce vibrations, avoid dilution, eliminate damage… Some classic tools have been updated and adapted to the new scenario, and are giving us good performance; on the other hand, others should be considered obsolete, given the accuracy of electronic initiation systems has exposed these tools to incoherent conclusions. Besides, other tools have appeared and are in use, providing new approaches to old issues. Additionally, not only the technical side has to be considered: safety, security, economics are well present in daily blasting activity and affect to the final decision: are electronic initiation systems the right answer to my blast?

Meramec Mining Company's Pea Ridge underground mine is presently involved in a large scale pillar recovery program and has made use of both rotary and down-the-hole drills for large diameter blastholes. Groups of pillars have been blasted with water gels in massive blasts which have broken in excess of one million tons of ore per blast. An outgrowth of the pillar recovery program is the combination of rotary and down-the-hole drills to develop vertical "raises" between mine levels. This paper outlines the Pea Ridge procedure for pillar blasting including the use of non-electric caps. Techniques and loading rates are discussed, and safeguards against blasting damage which were developed as a result of the program are presented.

I was lucky to land a job in the powder business. I was looking for some way to support my wife and first child to be when I saw an ad in the Hercules magazine, “Explosives Engineer” for technical representatives. I answered the ad in hopes that a geologist might find something else to do besides sit oil wells or “doodlebug” for oil. Both of these occupations I had tried and while the money was good the life was a bit erratic. The Army also wasn’t made for a guy who asked too many questions although my two plus years in uniform were interesting and in a few cases fun.

Laboratory studies have indicated that the crystallization and desensitization of microballoon sensitized emulsion explosives start immediately after shocking or pre-compression. However, the question of whether or not the shocked emulsion could be worsened by the growth of crystallization or recovered by rebounding back to lower densities has been rarely examined under actual rock blasting conditions. This study was primarily intended to investigate the desensitization characteristics of two commonly used emulsion products in terms of blasthole spacing and delay duration. In the experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.
