The existence of ammonia in underground blasting fumes was frequently measured in various field tests (6, 7). Ammonia in fumes with a TLV (threshold limit value) of around 30 ppm (slightly different in various countries) is a toxic gas but not considered to be a high risk for the underground work force as ammonia smells very itching and is extremely annoying. This might be the reason why ammonia is hardly measured in routine underground blasting fumes control. Another reason for the lacking measurement might be the circumstance that ammonia is a very reactive gas and the ammonia sensors available on the market are very cross sensitive to other gases like carbon monoxide. Nevertheless, especially since the introduction of bulk emulsion explosives in underground blasting, complaints from miners about ammonia in the blasting fumes increased. Research work by various institutions [8] around the world relates the ammonia in the fumes back to various mechanisms. Amongst others these comprise: a) non ideal (low temperature) detonation of explosives, with NH3 in the reaction products; b) reaction between rock and non detonated bulk explosives (especially when the rock is of a basic nature (high pH value); c) reaction between shotcrete and non detonated bulk explosives. Numerous blasting tests in an experimental underground set up have been made in order to check these hypotheses for ammonia origin in blasting fumes. None of them has been found to be responsible for sometimes high concentrations of ammonia in the fumes. The major reason for ammonia concentration in blasting fumes has been found in mine water of a high pH value (either natural or from using shotcrete). The mechanism identified is as follows: the moment a non detonated ammonium nitrate bearing explosive comes in contact with mine water of a high pH value, ammonia is formed immediately. The source for the undetonated explosive is twofold: firstly there is a certain spillage of explosives when the holes are charged (especially when using bulk products) and secondly not the entire explosives detonate completely. These undetonated remaining of the explosives end up in the muck pile after blasting. In case there is water of a high pH value the reaction between the explosives and the water starts immediately. This explains also the observation why ammonia can be measured in the blasting fumes quite a long time after the blast. The majority of the ammonia is not formed during the detonation; it is formed inside the muck pile even a considerable long time after the blast.

For the majority of open pit precious metal mines in the western United States, grade control practices have evolved as a direct result of the variable geology of the ore body and the lack of a clear visual or geologic distinction between ore and waste material. These practices often include the extensive use of buffer or choke blasting, in an attempt to minimize lateral movement of the muckpile. The Mackay School of Mines is conducting ongoing research, which aims to develop a practical method of measuring the movement of discrete “targets” placed within the body of the blast. The movement experienced by these targets can then be used to interpolate the movement of the blast as a whole. Typically, the boundaries between different material types are known as digging limits or polygons and are marked using colored flagging on the muckpile. If material movement can be measured using targets placed in the blast, these digging limits can be altered to reflect the blast-induced rock movement, reducing dilution and improving value recovery.

Phase 06 of the Los Bronces mine, currently under extraction for development, has the particularity of being close to the installations and buildings of a neighboring copper mine. Therefore, the blasts must ensure the continuity of the operation without affecting the nearby structures of the neighboring district, which include Maintenance sheds and Warehouse. Specifically, the safeguards consider a scenario that includes: - Flyrock projections (<150m) - Edge profile studies - Vibrations according to the NCh3577 standard - Nitrous gases Additionally, Phase 06 is also within Los Bronces, so strict control over spillage into the pit is necessary to avoid blocking ramp access to this level. The challenge lies in protecting not only the operation and facilities of the neighboring mining district but also the operability of Los Bronces. Thus, addressing these considerations, blasting configurations are developed with prior simulation of vibration models, flyrock, and spillage in all blasts, with strict control of technical design and implementation to ensure the results. Currently, blasts are successfully executed with control of projections based on the proximity of the projects, vibration (<40mm/s) with decoupling of holes of 17 mm/s between holes, reactive rock tests for explosive selection (loading advancement), and spillage simulation inside the pit according to the loading design; thus, ensuring operational continuity and mine development.

The signature hole method uses a convolution operation to predict the waveform of a production blast based on the record of a waveform produced by a single blast hole. Convolution is a mathematical operation on two functions, (generally the product) to produce a third one. Recent research communication and publications highlight a lack of discussion in the literature about the available methodologies to calculate the convolution for blast vibration prediction. The goal of this paper is to discuss and present in detail for students in ground vibrations from blasting, several techniques to calculate the convolution between signals when the signature hole method is used. Convolution is a straightforward operation when signals produced by each hole are assumed the same, however; variations in the signals from each hole in a production blast require a more complex convolution operation. A graphical procedure is shown in this paper to solve a convolution when signals vary hole-to-hole (as expected in a mining production blast). The graphical methodology was tested using a recorded blast event and the results were compared to the regular mathematical procedure (convolution) and the results from a commercial software used in the mining industry. Results show that the graphical procedure is in agreement with the results from the other two.

The Mont-Wright mine is Canada's largest open-pit iron ore mine with multiple open pits in operation. It is operated by ArcelorMittal Mining Canada in the northeast of the province of Quebec, near the town of Fermont. Fragmentation of rocks with explosives generates vibrations and gas expansion that damage intact rocks, affect existing crack networks, reduce the shear strength of discontinuities and the quality of the rock mass of the highwalls. The efficiency of its blasting operations is challenged by the need to optimize production and manage the risk of mine slope instability caused by vibrations from successive blasts. This paper presents a Multiple Seed Waveform (MSW) vibration model that was established at the mine for this purpose. Near-field signature hole blast vibration monitoring was conducted in multiple areas to establish site characterization as input to the blast vibration modeling at the highwalls of the site. The vibration attenuation laws were established and the effects of different blasthole diameters, shifting frequencies and presplit design were evaluated. Based on the results obtained from the near-field blast vibration monitoring, the calibrated MSW vibration model was used to select blast design parameters to control blast vibration while maximizing productivity of blasts at Mont-Wright mine.

The first public garage in the city of Dubrovnik has been built in highly urbanized area, on location Ilina Glavica. The excavation of the building pit has been done partly by construction machinery, i.e. by hydraulic hammer for excavations and partly by drilling and blasting. In the vicinity of the building pit there are houses, buildings and two schools. Drilling operations and blasting have been performed during the working hours while regular school classes have been held and activities in other buildings took place. The nearest structures are some 5 to 10 meters (16.4 to 32.8 ft) away from the building pit, which makes it even more difficult to perform blasting operations in the urban environment. For the purpose of determining safe and permissible oscillation velocity limits, i.e. the proportion of seismic effects of blasting, a trial blasting has been conducted. The permissible mass of explosive charge has been determined by original method respecting the requirements of existing standards (ISO 4866, DIN 4150, US BM 8507), which determine the permissible oscillation velocities in relation to their frequencies. According to measuring results of the oscillation velocity during the test blasting the design parameters of blasting field have been corrected and zones have been established within the excavation area considering the possible effect of blasting to the building pit environment. Further blasting operations have been performed in stages, in smaller blasting fields with deck charge within a blast hole while respecting the requirements of the transport possibilities for the blasted rock mass within the building pit and performance of control measurements of oscillation velocity for each blasting. Through application of all the protection measures, design solutions and systematic control of performance of activities the complete excavation by blasting has been completed without any damage on neighboring structures/buildings. This article presents these solutions and methods for reduction of seismic impact of blasting to the environment.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

Shockwaves that generate vibration in the surrounding environment of a blast, are one of the most important factors to control drill & blasting works near delicate buildings as well as in sensitive structures (wall control). On top of the damage to the buildings themselves, sensitive equipment such as computers, measurement apparatus and medical devices can be also compromised. The most commonly measured values from vibration are PPV (peak particle velocity), acceleration and displacement. Some devices and techniques have been developed in the last decades to measure the impacts of these vibratory phenomena. This information can be used to predict levels of vibration for future blasts and improve their quality of design using the attenuation law. From traditional studies to modern seismographs, a range of solutions are used for this propose. The main problem of applying this kind of technology is the high cost associated with each measurement device. In order to measure the ground vibration using new technologies while lowering the cost, a device has been developed using a microcontroller and electronic sensors commonly found on the market. This new equipment was tested side by side with traditional seismographs and the results were sent to a server for analysis. After several blasts, the necessary data was generated for the validation of the prototype. Through numerical mathematical processing (Taylor’s approach and numerical derivation) the original data supplied by the accelerometer’s sensors was transformed into velocity and, after the data mining, a statistics residue analysis was applied in order to evaluate if the data from the prototype and from the traditional seismographs were similar. The data from each system was used to estimate the attenuation law and the results are shown in this paper.

An underground room-and-pillar limestone mine in Western Missouri acquired a new primary crusher, physically larger in every dimension than the unit it replaced. Due to the space constraints within the mine, resetting the truck dump and feeder to account for the larger crusher was unfeasible. Mine management determined the most practical solution was to increase the available area for the new crusher via blasting. Fitting the new crusher into the existing area required the removal of 6 feet (1.83m) of limestone from the original floor grade. Blast parameters had to be designed to effectively break this shallow depth of rock while controlling movement to avoid contacting the mine back 23 feet (7.01m) overhead, an apron feeder 13 feet (3.96m) above the southern extent of the area, and the original crusher which was still in place 15 feet (4.57m) from the first pattern. Additionally, work needed to be completed within an aggressive schedule set forth by the mine, allowing little room for delay or error. This paper will examine the efforts taken to safely and effectively blast the rock while protecting nearby equipment and integrity of the mine back. Subjects covered will include blast design, adjustments made to account for drilling and equipment-related constraints, and how seemingly small changes in load parameters can significantly impact performance with small-diameter blast design.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Brisbane Hospital complex in Australia, a number of antiquated buildings were to be demolished and replaced by newer, modem facilities. Aside from the decommissioning of the hospital buildings, the project called for the removal of approximateIy 24,000 bank cubic metres (bcm) of varying quality rock material. Given the sensitivity of the project, in particular the close proximity of the required excavation to the existing hospital structures (-3 metres at the closest point), and the requirement that these were to remain lily operational during the construction phase, it was initially proposed to use hydraulic rock hammers as the primary means of excavation. Poor production rates and unexpected dif3icuIt rock conditions led to a revision of the excavation methods and a feasibility study on drill and blast practices was undertaken. Subsequent to an initial series of trial blasts to illustrate that vibration and flyrock could be adequately controlled, drill and blast methods were used in conjunction with mechanical methods of rock breakage. This paper reviews the drU and blast processes and the practices which were necessary to comply with the multiple constraints imposed on the project. The project has highlighted that modified drill and blast practices remain a cost-effective method of excavation, even in sensitive areas which are commonly deemed inappropriate for such methods.

Flyrock is the unwanted throw of rock fragments to excessive distances in opencast blasting. The incidence is relative in nature incorporating the distance of objects of concern like structures within and outside the mine, equipment within the mine & near the blast and persons within and off the mine. Several attempts to predict and defi ne fl yrock made worldwide could not address the problem since the phenomenon is not a regular feature in blasting. This probabilistic nature of fl yrock allows for risk calculation. CIMFR, India developed a Factor of Safety based risk criterion (10, 14) for evaluation of throw/ fl yrock in opencast mines that incorporates all the above in terms of distance and allowable limit of throw – which in turn determines the risk. The criterion provides the blaster a tool for mathematical evaluation of fl yrock risk in terms of a Factor of Safety and threat ratio (defi ned for the 1st time), thereby enhancing confidence when blasting. The method is easy to use and has been applied to several mines in India and the results are signifi cant. This paper details the evolution of the concept and its application in three limestone mines of India and the results obtained. The application of the method for defi ning a fl exible danger zone is also discussed.

On May 14, 2011 a chimney blast took place in Vienna, Austria. The blasting operation was part of the demolition works at a former railway fabrication. The demolition works on this ground were done under the leadership of the Austrian construction and demolition company PORR. In agreement with the civil organizations which were involved, the commander of the Regional Military Command of Vienna, Brigadier general Dr. Karl SCHMIDSEDER ordered a reserve force engineer company to demolish the chimney. The concrete planning of the chimney blasting was done by specialist Markus SEWALD who belongs to the HEERESTRUPPENSCHULE (combined armed force school) of the Austrian armed forces.

A large iron ore open pit mine in Brazil operates with reduced blast sizes, due to the imminence of red alerts in the rainy season and the proximity of plant and dam structures that demand control of the maximum load of fired explosives. Blasts are currently not allowed to remain loaded with explosives due to the risk of red alerts, limiting mine operations close to them. There is a need to increase the blast sizes, reducing the number of events required to obtain the planned mass and, consequently, the unproductive operating hours lost with mine evacuations. The WebGen™ wireless electronic initiation system is a technology for firing detonators via lowfrequency magnetic induction that propagates through the medium, without physical connection. A blast was carried out with 406 holes divided into 4 panels, aiming to validate the preloading technique with wireless detonators and its performance in safety and productivity. The absence of lead wires in the system eliminates the risk of interaction between vehicles and detonator cables in stemming and loading operations, which can result in unplanned detonation or misfire. By eliminating the need for a spotter, it reduces people's exposure to dust and the risk of human-machine interaction. Furthermore, it eliminates the risk of unplanned detonation caused by lightning strikes. The pre-loading technique with wireless detonators enables flexibility and efficiency in planning through temporary accesses over loaded areas. In the demonstration, driving over the loaded area was essential to avoid jams and excessive wear on equipment due to the narrow berm and very friable material. Another gain in productivity was optimizing operational stages, since detonators were programmed in parallel with loading, anticipating process stages, in addition to eliminating the need to connect detonators. Considering the average handling and savings in downtime due to the reduction of blasting events, a potential increase in movement of 49,000t (54,013 short tons) in 3 months was estimated, keeping the vibration results within the required limit. The trial with wireless detonators demonstrated the feasibility of carrying out blasts with preloaded panels, without restrictions on the number of panels or detonators, enabling vibration control, innovating mine planning and increasing safety and productivity

The Finnish Defence Forces Technical Research Centre (PVTT) studied the effect of shape of boost-er to its ability to ignite insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX). Therefore an explosive fac-tory produced 20 insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX) charges for the tests. The mass of each of the charges was exactly 9.2 kg (20.3 lb). The charges were equipped by two different type of boosters; RDX and PETN. Both the explosives contained some parts of plasticizers. The weight of all the boosters was exactly 300 g (0.66lb). On the bases of their shape, the boosters were also divid-ed into two different groups, cylindrical and “pancake”. In the middle of the “pancakes” there was also shaped a small cone in such away that the detonation could accelerate to its full speed after the charge was ignited. A time series and system analysis modeling technique was applied to signals from strain egages mounted on a fully grouted resin roof bolt and signals from accelerometers mounted on the bolt head and roof rock to determine the roof bolt's response to repeated blast loading. The derived model gives a comprehensive quantitative description of the modes of vibration of the roof bolt response to each blast loading. The damping ratios and natural frequencies of the modes of vibration can reveal the alteration of the process dynamics due to the deterioration of the roof rock and can be used to identify the incipience of instability in the roof bolt system.

The thermodynamics work-principle was used to develop the rupture-fracture-throw (RFT) model for ranking the performance of reduced-density explosives when shot in rock or other stratum. The RFT model revises techniques used for the rock-water-jelly (RWJ) model, where the reaction-zone remains trapped within the rock/stratum. Therein, ranking of performance refers to trends for the two resolved components of the total expansion work: the reversible mechanical work taken as the heave and the residual irreversible portion, taken as the undissipated shock. For numeric tractability, the RFT and RWJ thermodynamic efficiency were taken equal, while the RWJ late-stage confinement was replaced with restrained venting through the rock, to render the RFT inefficient heave. The transfer of heat from the reaction-zone was neglected and the root-power formula was used to render the gas-covolume. Ranking trends were found for a generic charge formulation over a wide ranging density, with underwater results noted for comparison. Realistic compositions, some with natural resource materials, were treated for just typical and reduced density. Rock characteristics, ranging from hard rock to weak stratum, were represented by their density and rupture compression strength. Quantitative test results for shock or heave in rock remain difficult, so qualitative guidelines remain helpful when reviewing the graphic trends. Theoretical refinements for rock fragment size-distribution remain under development, though some relationships are touched upon to gain insight.

"In this work a blasting seismograph was tested on a vibration shaker controlled by a single-point laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). A total of 43 tests were made to measure the transfer properties(transmissibility and phase shift) of the basic elements of the full monitoring chain and investigate theperformance of the full system. The main elements of the seismograph are described by second ordertransfer functions with typical parameters calibrated through nonlinear fit of the measured responses. The resulting transfer function is used to compare the behavior of the tested seismograph with fourtheoretical seismographs representative of those used in blasting. Fifteen theoretical inputs are runthrough the transfer function of each seismograph to assess their steady-response. The error (expressed as gain) in the peak velocity has been assessed. It varies from -1.5 to 2.3 dB (equivalent to atransmissibility of 0.84 to 1.3, respectively) depending on the seismograph and frequencies of the input.The largest errors occurred for input signals with frequencies in the low (<32 Hz) or high ranges (>125Hz), where the mechanical, electronics and digital parts of the seismograph modify the signals. Seismographs with the nominal transfer function described by DIN 45669:1:2010 are ranked with the smallest errors. Monitoring devices with transmissibility around one in a narrow bandwidth, in line with ISEE suggested criteria for amplitude response, involve large phase shifts at low and high frequencies, resulting in a worst performance."

During the Summer of 1997, rock excavation was carried out for construction of the Centre Block Underground Services building (CBUS) abutting the most historically significant structural complex in Canada, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Controlled blasting was required for the removal of 25,000 cubic metres of limestone bedrock within the ten week time window of Parliamentary recess. A test blast program carried out in 1996 had established that close blasting was viable even within the very restrictive limits considered necessary to preserve the structural and cosmetic integrity of these historic structures. In total 300 blasting operations were required to complete the excavation, including the 20 test blasts conducted in 1996. Based on attenuation characteristics established for the site during the trial blast phase, the blasting contractor proposed excavating the CBUS site in three zones. Each zone contained differing drill patterns, depths and explosive loads. Vibration intensities, air concussion levels and displacements across representative existing cracks were measured and recorded at numerous observation points within and around the Centre Block and the Library of Parliament, as well as on the grounds of the Parliamentary Precinct. The blasting portion of the excavation was completed within budget in less than eight weeks, well within the tune window available. Comparison of very extensive pre and post-blast condition surveys revealed no damage to the existing structures on Parliament Hill as a result of these operations.

In the past, various investigations have been carried out at the Hagerbach Experimental Gallery under accurately reproducible conditions, in order to determine the emissions emanating from blasting operations. Comparative investigations proved that the composition of the blast fumes is influenced by the choice of different explosives. It also emerged that the use of emulsion explosives leads to significantly lower concentrations of harmful substances in the blast fumes. Further investigations concerned the residues and reaction products from the explosive process which are left in the debris. Eluate tests on representative samples of debris were used to determine the concentrations of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium in the debris.

Several areas at the DOZ haulage were observed for the crusher’s location. Initially the new crusher designed position was west of the crusher 1, but due to concerns of the mine crack zone (deep MLZ) the crusher position moved to the south. The new crusher location is situated in a diorite rock massive between 3053 – 3079 levels, with the overall excavation of 2500 cum and dimension of 14m long, 14 m wide and 14 m high. Main Crusher chamber itself excavated by development jumbo in three lifts. Development of access to the bottom crusher was developing the same time as chambering the top crusher. The pocket of the crusher mined with vertical crater retreat system which is initiated in one time after middle slot raise. Collaboration between production and perimeter blast holes to be obtaining in control the actual cuts as per the design shape.
