The Empire Mine initiated production in 1963. Since then the unit operations of drilling and blasting have evolved continually in order to meet the increased mining requirements demanded by plant expansions in 1968, 1973 and 1980. Additionally, advance mine planning has become an integral part of proper pit development and is necessary to insure uniform blending of the distinct ore horizons contained within the mine area. Blasting practices have been modified to facilitate the autogenous grinding system utilized at Empire and pioneered in the Iron Ore Industry. Technical innovations in the explosives industry, as well as, progress regarding on site blast engineering methods have substantially increased the use of ammonium nitrate explosives and helped to establish efficient charging procedures. In addition, the recent introduction and use of ammonium nitrate fueled with nitropropane and methanol indicates that it is a viable substitute for aluminized ANFO.

The mining, quarrying and construction industries are often blamed for causing damage to residential-type structures when explosives are used. The claim experience for blasting vibration damage has been poor. This coverage is excluded from the Comprehensive General Liability (CGL) policy. To obtain this coverage, the policyholder must meet additional criteria and an additional premium must be paid. The risk management process offers the explosives user a technique for minimizing the risk of complaints and vibration damage claims on his insurance program and his cash flow. Case histories indicate that the vibration damage claims expense may be a lower risk than the risk of interference with production and cash flow. An annotated bibliography on risk management and defense of vibration damage claims is provided.

"The characteristics of a blasted muck pile can have a significant effect on the productivity and economyof loading and hauling operations. Poorly fragmented and tight muck piles, caused by insufficientdisplacement of the broken rock, lead to higher digging and hauling costs. Therefore muck pile must be tailored to suit the loading and hauling equipment. In order to achieve this objective, it is imperative to understand the relevant muck pile characteristics and factors governing them. In general, muck pile characteristics are governed by the blast design parameters, rock mass geology, explosive characteristics and post-blasting requirements."

High cost - low productivity mining methods at the Homestake Mine forced the need for a new and safer means of ore extraction. Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) was introduced in 1978 and accounts for over 50% of the underground mine production today. Many advantages can be attributed to this form of "bulk mining"; including steady production, decreased labor costs, and the ability to mine bulk stopes in the lower portion of the mine. However, safety and high productivity are the two major advantages. This paper will deal specifically with crater blasting and the application of mass blasting techniques in Vertical Crater Retreat slopes.

In recent years, many individuals looking into the future of the blasting industry have predicted that the most likely next technological breakthrough would be the use of high precision, digitally controlled detonators. This seemed logical since not only was there much room for improvement in this area, but any significant improvement in delay timing could yield great benefits in productivity and control of adverse effects. And in fact, within the past two or three years, such electronic detonators have been introduced in the field by a number of different manufacturers. These systems are currently being used in many routine blasting operations around the world which are being closely watched and evaluated.

The 80 year old Theodore Roosevelt Dam built in a scenic canyon near Globe, Arizona is currently undergoing a major renovation. The old stone dam, built by hundreds of skilled stonemasons, is being covered with a new concrete face that will increase the dam height by 77 feet. The renovated dam will improve flood control and provide increased electrical power and recreation area. The contractor, J.A. Jones is constructing the new dam and powerhouse for the Bureau of Reclamation.

Ever since the 8ms criterion was developed in the early 60’s there has been an ongoing debate among many blasters as to its actual value in controlling ground vibration. The perpetuation of the myth surrounding the 8ms window can be partly attributed to its simplicity and convenience as a means for regulatory compliance. Unfortunately, the mindset that many blasters have adopted has hindered the development and use of more effective techniques and in many cases can actually be counter productive to vibration control.

The paper details the preliminary design utilising both detonating cord only and specialised presplit product charges and compares these to the final designs utilised based on site experience. Modern commercial blasting is as much a technical process as it is a business one. As with most processes both aspects of blasting are driven by and generate new data. The time-critical nature of commercial blasting in mining and construction projects, dictate the timely exchange of information so as not to impede production or commerce. Up-to-date information about the blast to be undertaken can help suppliers: meet customers’ expectations to address challenging ground conditions; react to a market where quickly changing orders occur regularly; and address as-drilled blast patterns as opposed to baseline plans. “Real-time” data exchange into and out of the blasting process supports the whole-of-mine data management that the industry is migrating to.

In the mining industry ANFO continues to be the primary source of explosive energy. The three most commonly used loading methods are bulk, pour in 50 lb. multiwall bags and cylindrical shaped wet hole bags. Each loading method has its advantages. Each method has certain disadvantages which limit its effectiveness. The expandable bag system developed by ECONEX overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional bulk, pour in bags and wet hole package products.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.

Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

Since the signature hole method principle has been described in the 80's, there has always been a lot of controversy about it. The theory is easy to understand but when it comes to apply it for predicting vibration level, optimizing timing to reduce PPV or shifting frequencies, it’s not always working as expected. Simulations show waveforms that don't make any sense or predictions that are far away from actual results.
