Down time in the Oil Refining and Petro Chemical Industry is extremely expensive. Each day of non-production may easily cost several million dollars. Explosives have been accepted by this industry to solve many of its problems. Explosives offer a solution which is faster, more economical and most important, safer than many of their methods. Our specialties for these industries include: Refractory removal, industrial cleaning, metal cutting and concrete removal. This report does not include information on concrete removal.

A method of determining the fragment size distribution of rock quarry muckpiles using photographic and digital-image processing techniques has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. To assess the fragmentation, photographs and video tapes were taken in both the laboratory and in the field and then digitized for analysis. The fully-automated process uses specially written image-interpretation software which had been developed previously by Bureau researchers to measure irregular taconite ore shapes. The advantages of photographic assessment in comparison with other methods include speed and cost.

An extensive computer program has been developed which will store and analyze pertinent blast related parameters such as date, time, shot coordinates, charge, delay times, etc. In conjunction with these blast parameters, measured ground vibration information can be stored. In addition to actual seismograph data, predicted ground vibration in terms of velocity (inches/sec) can be generated for selected receiver locations. The magnitude of the blast generated ground vibration is based on scale distance relationships. The program can be used for planning blasts, to satisfy local environmental regulations and for insurance and/or legal purposes.

This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. "It is widely accepted that the rock blasting results are a function of several stochastic variables given by: -The natural geological structure of the rock mass (joint spacings, discontinuities length orientation and characteristics, physical-mechanical properties, such as: ultimate strengths and elastic properties, etc.).-The detonation and explosion parameters of the explosive mixture (V.O.D., P2, T2, Q3, etc.).-The drilling and blasting pattern dimensions.-In this paper the most important stochastic variables regarding with the rock mass and the blast design dimensions before mentioned are identified, described and discussed.A non linear programming method to calculate the optimum burden Bo) is proposed and discussed.The great impact of the stochastic variable called burden (B) on the rock blasting results is emphasized. A comparison between burden theoretical calculations and some field blast results is also shown."

Due to the competitive nature of the coal industry we are constantly challenged to reduce costs associated with day to day operations. Every facet of the mining operation is scrutinized for cost reduction and possible efficiency increases. This paper will discuss the pros and cons of two different blasting methods. Buffer blasting has been an institution for many years at Spring Creek Coal and very successful in its application. Cast blasting arrived on a trial basis in 1998 and has produced very encouraging results. This paper will describe the design, drilling, and blasting methods currently used, and a comparison of these two methods.

Photos 1 - 4 – Chris Elliott is a rock slope supervisor on a construction project east of Seattle, Washington. His job is to look after a “two man” scaling crew working on the rock bluffs some 300 feet in height along the I-90 interstate just east of the town Hyak. The Washington State Rock Engineers noticed a very large mass of unstable rock along the upper rock face and asked us to take it out. Chris is loading explosives in 1½" ” holes that are 8 to 10 feet deep by 40 feet long with 1¼” x 8” power primer on the unstable rock mass that is about 300 feet above the new road construction. I-90 runs east and west longside the new construction note the containment fence and the ship containers along the highway for protection and Lake Keechelus in the background.

Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

People used to regard emulsion explosives as the safest industrial explosives. But in the process of manufacturing emulsion explosives spontaneous ignitions of the remnant emulsion matrix have happened under the conditions of constant or low temperature. These fatal accidents show both emulsion explosives and emulsion matrix may involve hidden danger. Since the temperature in its production emulsion matrix is high, emulsion matrix is sensitive to mechanic action.

This paper reviews empirical and analytical information about window breakage due to airblast. As is the case with damage to structures caused by ground vibrations, a fixed break/no break threshold is inapplicable and window damage must be expressed in terms of a statistical probability. The information is summarized in a graph showing the probability of windows being broken by a given level of overpressure.

The results of an ongoing study to determine the response of full contact rock bolts to shock waves due to blasting are presented. A time domain systems modeling and analysis technique was used to identify the axial and bending response of the bolt when explosives charges are detonated at close-in distances.

High cost - low productivity mining methods at the Homestake Mine forced the need for a new and safer means of ore extraction. Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) was introduced in 1978 and accounts for over 50% of the underground mine production today. Many advantages can be attributed to this form of "bulk mining"; including steady production, decreased labor costs, and the ability to mine bulk stopes in the lower portion of the mine. However, safety and high productivity are the two major advantages. This paper will deal specifically with crater blasting and the application of mass blasting techniques in Vertical Crater Retreat slopes.

Cautious, productive blasting is employed in the adaptation of a mobile crushing system extending into a highway through cut. In Hong Kong's final chapter of infrastructure development in preparation for handover of sovereignty, the vital link to the new governing country, The People's Republic of China, is now being completed. The Ting Kau approach and Tai Lam tunnel involves the removal of 6 million cubic meters of rock by drill and blast means. For the main-cut excavation (because of removal Iogistics) a unique adaptation of a Lokotrack crushing and conveyor transfer system is being used. The characteristic narrow working area associated with through cuts, positioning of equipment, and production demand place many limiting factors on blasting. Add to this the strict criteria set by the local regulatory body, the Hong Kong Mines Division, and nearby vibration limiting structures (13mm/sec), has led to highly cautious, fine-tuned blasting.

Of the various methods used to reduce the density of emulsion explosives prior to detonation; ammonium nitrate prill addition, glass micro-balloon addition and chemical gassing, chemical gassing is the method most often selected by emulsion explosive end users. Chemically gassing emulsions costs less than adding micro-balloons and chemically gassed emulsions have better water resistance than emulsions that add ammonium nitrate prills to reduce the bulk density. Unfortunately, the chemical gassing of emulsion explosives can be intricate and is often more art than a science. To gain a better understanding of chemical gassing, we investigated the factors that may affect the chemical gassing of emulsion explosives. Variables investigated as having an effect on gassing were the pH of the oxidizer phase, the amount and type of nitrogen in the emulsifier, the composition of the oxidizer phase, the use of pH buffers in the oxidizer phase, and how the gassing reagents are added to the emulsion.

The Hanging Lake Tunnel Project represents a major portion of the Glenwood Canyon Project, the last piece of Interstate 70 to be constructed. The project features twin bore, large span rock tunnels and six open cut portal excavations, all excavated by drilling and blasting. This paper presents descriptions of the methods used by the Owner and Engineer to control and monitor the drilling and blasting practices in the tunnels and in the portal areas.

The Paseo Bridge was located at the I-29/I-35/US-71 Missouri River Highway Crossing. It was built between 1952 and 1954 by Massman Construction Company. The 1,232 foot long, self-anchored suspension bridge was the longest of its type when built. On Jan. 22, 2003, a connector pin designed to allow the bridge to expand and contract during temperature cycles seized and caused a portion of the bridge deck to raise up and block traffic. This marked the beginning of the end for the old Paseo Bridge.
