A bridge over a main line railroad system was scheduled for demolition. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and spanned three mainline railroad tracks which could not be shut down due to blasting or demolition. To further complicate matters, the mainline tracks had high tension power lines running above the tracks, but below the bridge. These high tension wires provided the electricity for electrically powered trains. The tracks could not be damaged or disrupted, nor could the power line be broken.

The 80 year old Theodore Roosevelt Dam built in a scenic canyon near Globe, Arizona is currently undergoing a major renovation. The old stone dam, built by hundreds of skilled stonemasons, is being covered with a new concrete face that will increase the dam height by 77 feet. The renovated dam will improve flood control and provide increased electrical power and recreation area. The contractor, J.A. Jones is constructing the new dam and powerhouse for the Bureau of Reclamation.

Proper loading procedures such as primer location, borehole sealing, decking, and stemming along with the hazards of dropping on primers are presented. Effect of each of these variables has been well characterized for ANFO. This paper presents results of underwater energy measurements for one watergel and one emulsion type of slurry explosive which were initiated by 3 types of initiators (one electric and two cords of different strength) in 2 and 3 inch diameter steel pipes. Results of this 2 x 3 x 2 factorial experiment show the effects of detonating cord on energy released by the watergel and the emulsion explosive. Effect of diameter and its interaction with cord strength have also been characterized for the two explosives.

This discussion is an overview of an approach to drilling and blasting angle holes at Martin Marietta Aggregates. Method of determining burdens, hole depths, angle settings and explosive selection will be discussed in detail with an emphasis on safety and production. Such techniques and methods involve the use of hand-held surveying instruments such as the Abney level, pocket transit and inclinometer along with measuring tape and burden pole. An interesting method developed by Oscar Banfield a retired Martin Marietta and E. I. duPont engineer, for setting the proper angle on a drill will also be presented. This treatise is a discussion of the use of simple yet important tools and techniques a blaster should use to resolve both routine and complex problems encountered during quarry blasting operations.

At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

Mixtures of prilled ANFO and 0,5 - 3 mm polystyrene balls are interesting substitutes to the tube charges or other types of reduced explosives or detonation fuses. Experiments have shown detonation ability even of a mixture of 95% bolt polystyrene balls and 5% ANFO. The gas and shock energy in the mixtures decrease proportional with the content of polystyrene. The detonation velocity shows higher values than expected for mixtures with more than 50% (vol.) ANFO.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.
