RBH Note: in 1913 black powder was still dominant as a coal-mining explosive, but permissible explosives were making some slight headway. For example, in 1902 there were only 11,300 pounds of permissibles used in coal mining, but in 1913 the quantity was 21,801,285 pounds. However, there were 187,551,653 pounds of black powder used that year. It took many years before the use of black powder ended in coal mining. From the picture of the miner reparing his explosives it’s hard to tell what he’s using, but the fact that a wooden Du Pont powder box is shown, he’s probably not using black powder. That doesn’t mean he’s using a permissible, either, since that was not yet a requirement. It’s interesting that the miners have open flame cap lamps, and the miner is actually smoking a pipe while preparing his explosives.

In some metal mines, it is a serious problem the decomposition of explosives which occurs suddenly by contact with ore containing pyrites under high temperature conditions. In the present paper, we investigated heat resistant properties of emulsion explosives and other industrial explosives by contact with ore containing pyrites under high temperature conditions.

In considering the cost of rock excavation, but little attention has been given to the economical handling and breaking up of boulders. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. The subject is worthy of close and prolonged study.

This article summarizes an investigation of the structural response of a brick façade home in New Mexico. The subject Ricter residence was located some 1100 to 1400 ft away from an aggregate quarry, and was subjected to a maximum peak particle velocity and air blast over pressure of 0.29 ips and 122 dB, respectively. Superstructure (corner) and mid-wall responses to blasting and human induced activities were measured. An existing exterior crack in the brick work was instrumented to measure crack width response to blasting, human induced activities, and environmentally induced changes in temperature and humidity. Crack and structure response data were correlated with ground velocity and airblast excitations. Amplification of ground motions at the upper structure were calculated and compared with values for typical wood frame structures. The natural frequency and damping characteristics of the structure were determined to compare with measured amplification values. Wall strains produced by bending and inplane tension strains were computed from upper corner structure response and compared to failure strains for drywall and brick veneer. Calculated strains were found to be far lower than those required to crack brick and environmentally induced crack response was found to be far greater than that caused by blast induced ground motion or airblast overpressures

Such is my case at a West Virginia coal mine where a mine manager was desperately seeking a way to eliminate coal damage on cast shots while maintaining cast percentage without the expensive process of secondary drilling. This paper will focus on how bottom hole air decking is solving the problem.

Avalanches are commonly mitigated through the use of explosives at ski resorts and above transportation corridors. Surprisingly, very little research has been conducted on snowpack response to explosive inputs, and efforts to model this response have been limited. The purpose of this ongoing research project is to ascertain an understanding of the dynamic snowpack response in relation to explosive size and height above the snowpack, coupled with snow conditions, to enhance avalanche control. A system of sensors and computer-controlled data acquisition components has been created to record the movement of snow resulting from the charge detonation. The system records acceleration vertically and radially within the snowpack at two distances from the point of detonation as well as blast air pressure at one location during explosive events. The data at two locations allows inferences to be made about the transmittance and attenuation of shock waves through the snowpack radially as well as vertically. The data shows that raising charges above the surface results in increased snowpack dynamic response when compared to surface detonations. Applying power function regression to accelerations for individual charge elevations, it was determined that both radial and vertical rates of attenuation were not dependant on charge elevation. Additionally, raising the charge also resulted in increased dynamic response at depth within the snowpack

The goal of a mine is to produce ore at the lowest possible cost with due regard to safety of pemonnel and equipment. The mining process consists of a number of discrete operations such as planning, drilling, blasting,excavation, transportation and crushing. These processes are interrelated and cannot be considered as separate activities when optimising output and minimising cost. In order to optimise the global costs it may therefore be necessary to increase cost in one area such as blasting design and management beyond the norm.

With the millennium fever all but faded, we look to a new century filled with awe and excitement. We step forward in time, marveling over the achievements of the 20th century and wondering what the next 100 years could possibly bring. Will there ever be another time that produces such technological advances, economic progress or social changes? Keeping pace with the awesome accomplishments of the past century has not been an easy task and we must prepare ourselves for the possibilities of the future. Take, blasting safety for instance. We all know that safety is personal - a culture - promulgated not only by the company by which you are employed, but, by a sense of your own personal responsibility that must constantly be reinforced through awareness, training, and discipline. Great strides have been made in blasting safety since its crude beginnings, however, safety consciousness becomes even more important as technological advances and scientific progress are made in the coming years. It all begins with a positive safety attitude where every employee habitually examines each situation encountered, identifies potential hazards, and takes precautions to avoid those hazards.

New mines are frequently located at altitudes above 3,000 meters (10,000 ft.). Drill selection must take the altitude effects into account, to insure high productivity and good bit life. In particular, compressors must be sized differently than for low altitude operation. A larger compressor is required to deliver adequate air to the bottom of the blasthole. Many drills in remote locations use diesel engines as the prime mover. Altitude effects on engine performance should also be considered.

The manufacture of Energetics Materials (EM), including maintenance and demilitarization of munitions causes dangerously high levels of explosives residues to be harbored in building features. The two commonly approved methods of decontaminating energetics contaminated equipment and building features are thermal treatment and steam washing. The current regulatory environment is generally becoming more stringent and unfavorable to thermal and steam decontamination because of their adverse impact on air, soil, and water and their ineffectiveness to completely remove accumulated energetics from foundation cracks, internal and external piping, voids in walls and ventilation systems, and internal cavities of fixed equipment. However, chemical destruction of energetics, especially high explosives, is gaining acceptance as a safer, cost-effective and environmental friendly alternative to thermal and steam decontamination. Organic explosives, including nitramines and nitrate esters are oxidized organic compounds that are susceptible to chemical oxidation and reduction reactions. Under suitable conditions, a chemical reagent consisting of sulfur-based bulk reductants (neutralent) commercialized as MuniRem generates highly reactive free radicals that very rapidly degrade many energetic compounds to innocuous end products while stabilizing metals as the insoluble metal sulfides.

In Finland Posiva Oy (Company) is responsible for implementing the final disposal programme for spent nuclear fuel of its owners. Company is preparing for the geological disposal in Olkiluoto crystalline bedrock. Excavation will be executed using drill and blast method. Method unavoidably causes variable excavation damaged zone (EDZ) on tunnel surfaces. The EDZ constitutes a risk for long term safety and therefore good control methodology of the blasting technique is required. The thicker the EDZ, the greater is the likelihood for detrimental transport pathways for ground water to transport radio nuclides, should those be present.

"This paper was originally intended to be a presentation of a case study of two surface bituminouscoal mines in the southern Appalachian coal fields located within five miles of each other. These mines were nearly identical in every aspect from geologic setting to equipment application. Althoughrepresentatives from each mine desired to participate in the preparation of this paper through support in providing background information and in review and editing, it was later concluded that, due to the environmental sensitivity associated with each mine, it may not have been a good decision to present this case study in a public forum."

This paper summarizes the course of mine blasting safety, particularly in underground coal mining, in the USA for over a century of mining operations. During the late 1800's and especially in the first decade of the 1900's, a large number of mine explosions occurred in which blasting played a significant role. A contributor to the large number of mine explosions during this time period was the use of black blasting powder to extract coal and other minerals. A review is made of some of the more significant underground coal mine explosions that resulted from blasting operations during this time period up to the present day. The safety measures that were adopted and required by a series of laws as a result of mine explosion disasters in which blasting was one of the factors are examined. The time line of historical improvements in blasting safety and the tremendous reduction in fatalities and injuries over a century is illustrated and discussed. The improvements, which included the elimination of black powder and dynamite and the introduction of safer explosives termed "permissibles" occurred slowly over time and culminated from the occurrence of many coal mine explosion disasters. The blasting accident history over the past decade is discussed to show the great gains made when compared to the first decade of the 1900's. The most recent blasting accident fatality that occurred in October 2006 at a U.S. underground coal mine is also discussed. Although the blasting accident record is significantly improved from over a century ago, continual improvement is needed to reach the goal of zero fatalities.

Stockholm’s Northern Link, currently Europe’s largest urban road tunnel project, will be about 5 km long from west to east. Running through two separate, mostly parallel tunnels, each with 2-4 lanes, the complex will include numerous entries and exits, as well as a major branch to the north. The total length of tunnel will be 11 km, of which 9 km will be in rock. Over million m3 of rock will be blasted. The Northern Link will open to traffic in 2015. After a 10-year stop to deal with environmental questions regarding Ekoparken, Stockholm’s unique “national city park”, the Northern Link project in the Swedish capital was restarted in the autumn of 2006, with the construction of five works-access tunnels.

The phenomenon of sympathetic detonations in blastholes is investigated by comparing experimental observations and numerical modelling results. Numerical modelling using the TDL computer code and Forest Fire decomposition rates for commercial explosives has shown the importance of blasthole diameter, impedance of stemming material and host rock. Comparison with experimental observations has also shown that sympathetic detonations cannot always be treated as shock to detonation transitions (SDT). Examination of previous results which have been obtained from calibrated low amplitude shock experiments reveal that there is an ignition threshold prior to the detonation threshold. The difference between the two thresholds is more pronounced in the case of air bubble sensitized products. The ignition threshold can be very important under the confinement provided by the blasthole and the conditions of application. It also correlates well with the pressures expected at the gap distances of interest in the practical application. It is suggested that critical energies are used as the criterion for cross initiation in blastholes. Practical suggestions based on the numerical calculations and experiments based on these calculations are also given and discussed.
