Following the success of the West Ore Zone distress mass blast in 2001 at Brunswick Mine, a similar approach was taken to distress the North Regional Pillar (NRP) which contained over 3 million tonnes of high grade ore. The NRP is located on the 1000 m Level with very poor hanging-wall (H/W) rock mass qualities. After an extensive geotechnical review, the distress slot is located close to the foot-wall (F/W) of the NRP in order to have the competent ore as H/W. The longitudinal area to distress covers 115 m along the strike and 85 m high from 1000 1-sub to 850 Sill. Prior to the final mass blast, 3 voids were created to allow rock swelling: the North void, the South void and the trench just below the mass blast. After over one year of preparation, the mass blast of 202,000 tonnes was successfully initiated on February 7, 2003 with 1561 electronic detonators and 210,000 kg of emulsion explosives. The blast achieved its objective of distressing the NRP as indicated the mine-wide micro-seismic monitoring system. This paper describes different stages of the project from void preparation to the mass blast itself, as well as some detailed aspects such as muck-pile prediction for mucking sequence with the help of DMC_Blast simulation code and electronic detonators.

On Sunday, April 22, 2001, 38-year old Gilbert Paquette was killed when his singleengine Cessna 150 struck a 1,217-foot tall communications transmission tower while flying in heavy fog over a remote region of upper Quebec Province.

It has long been known that successful blasting in soft and hard rock can require the use of different explosives. While choosing an explosive of the right energy density is important, the dynamics associated with non-ideal detonation behaviour play an equally major role. Tuning the energy release rate of an explosive to optimise its blast efficiency can be likened to tuning an internal combustion engine to improve its performance.

Repelling charges are small explosive charges detonated to frighten and drive fish away from a blasting zone just prior to detonation of a major explosive charge. Use of repelling charges has been recommended by natural resource agencies to mitigate the effects of submerged explosives. Blasting companies have used this technique in a "good faith effort" to reduce potential damages to aquatic resources. It has been assumed that noise or pressure generated by the small charge will drive fish from the immediate area, thereby reducing impacts from the much larger and potentially more-damaging blast.

A blast monitoring program conducted at Chemical Lie Company’s new lime calcining facility near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri is discussed. The purpose was to develop blasting criteria for the construction and operation of the lime plant within the quarry operated by Tower Rock Stone. Further, it was imperative to accommodate production requirements into the blasting criteria. The major concern was the effect of blasting on the curing of green concrete during the construction of the storage silos and kiln stacks. In addition to discussing the susceptibility of curing concrete to blast vibrations, the paper also details how this varies with time.

Blast casting or trajectory blasting, as it is sometimes called, is an innovative mining technique that has been receiving increasing acceptance among operations of surface coal mines and quarries as a means of offsetting the rising cost of mechanical excavation of overburden with a high overburden-to-ore ratio. Many similarities exist between geological characteristics of overburden formations of phosphate beds and the formations that conceal coal seams. Both are sedimentary origin and are removed for mining in an identical manner (i.e. use of a dragline or shovel to strip or cast the overburden aside).

When blasting is eliminated as a cause of cosmetic cracking, often someone will ask, “If blasting didn’t cause the crack, then what did?” This paper describes detection by remotely operated instrumentation of the new cosmetic crack that was climatologically-induced. The measurement was obtained as a part of the development of Autonomous Crack Measurement (ACM) instruments to measure micro-inch response of cracks to both long-term, climatological, and dynamic, blast vibration effects. The crack occurred in the wall of a structure that was monitored for over 29 months and as such represents one of the longest periods of ACM observation.

Drilling and blasting in a Karst (sinkholes and mud seams) environment has long been a problem for blasters, miners, quarry operators, contractors, and developers. While one cannot change the geological conditions, one can take some measures during the bidding process and the initial preparation of the blasting program to help reduce some of the problems. During the geotechnical investigation and developing the test/core drilling grid, the owner/developer needs to take some additional measures that will provide important data to the blaster to help reduce the problems associated with blasting this type of geology. The owner/developer must also understand that, due to the geologic conditions, the results of the blasting will not be ideal and there may be additional blast-related costs. If provided the proper geologic data, the blaster can develop drilling patterns and blast designs that will help reduce some of the more problematic areas.

As part of an accident investigation ANFO was subjected to various abusive tests. A tractor-trailer carrying 18,000 kg of blasting explosives, caught fire, burned for approximately 30 minutes, and then detonated. A series of tests was designed to observe the behaviour of ANFO when subjected to different thermal stimulus tests and more specifically, the Height-to-Detonation Test. Three diameters of steel pipes were used in the Height-to-Detonation Tests thereby simulating cylindrical columns within a pile of ANFO. The ANFO samples were then subjected to various thermal stimuli to initiate a reaction. Through the use of some instrumentation, the response of large ANFO samples was recorded and its behaviour, including the occurrence of phase changes will be analysed.

BCHMX (cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole or Bicyclo-HMX) was studied as an energetic component of three different plastic explosives based on three matrices: C4 matrix, semtex10 matrix and silicone matrix. The original plastic explosives, Composition C4 - based on RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane), Semtex 10 explosive based on PETN (pentaerythritoltetranitrate) and plastic RDX-silicone, were included for comparison. Sensitivity and performance parameters were studied.

Good toe breakage and a flat working bench after blasting are important parameters to achieve a high productivity during material loading and reduce the necessity for secondary blasting. Good toe breakage requires a proper burden – side spacing design and a suitable sub-drilling. With unfavourable jointed rock mass conditions the use of horizontal bottom holes still can be found as common work practice even that this is associated to high risks.

The Florida legislature allocated funding for the Florida State Fire Marshal (FSFM) to review the applicability of the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) Report of Investigations (RI) 8507 blast vibration limits with respect to Florida and its soils. The study also discusses whether the current blasting vibration limits set by statute are still appropriate, including a review of measured vibration amplitudes and frequencies, structure responses, and theoretical analyses of material strength and strains.

Project Owners typically require General and Detailed Blast Plans when blasting close to important structures and specify the maximum allowable peak particle velocity for each potentially affected structure. Low, residential level PPV limits may be specified which significantly restricts the potential for blasting to be effectively used. Contractor’s responding to these contract conditions typically cite historic case studies which may, or may not, apply to the specific situation and/or types of structures for which limits have been set.
