The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on substitutes for chromium-containing alloys in order to conserve imported critical and strategic materials. Part of this research concentrates on finding low-chromium substitutes for heat-resisting stainless steels for the temperature range 600° to 800° C. Ferritic alloys are emphasized that have oxidation resistance provided by chromium contents as low as 10 pct and stress rupture strength provided by the precipitation of the chi(X)-phase intermetallic compound, (Fe36Cr12 (Mo, Ti)10). Initially, research was concentrated on selecting an alloy composition having a minimum chromium content with strengthening provided by the X-phase. An Fe-(10-12 pct)Cr-6 pct Mo-(1.5-2.0 pct)Ti alloy was selected. After the alloy selection, the tensile, stress rupture, and oxidation properties were determined. Stress rupture properties were found to be similar to those of 304 stainless steel. However, the alloys possessed brittleness during both stress rupture and tensile testing, possibly as a result of too high a content of molybdenum and titanium. Higher than expected oxidation rates were found that may be caused by the high molybdenum content.

The Bureau of Mines has researched the utilization of mining and pro-cessing wastes as raw materials for the production of glass-ceramic pipe. Characterization of various wastes as to occurrence and chemical composition is reported. A computer program was developed and used to identify waste materials and mixes that would result in glass melts from which glass-ceramics could be produced after cooling and subsequent heat treatments. The production of abrasion-resistant pipe from inexpensive and readily available domestic resources could offer an economical substitute for high-alloy steels containing the critical and strategic materials cobalt and chromium.

Provide the mining industry with a wireless surveying system for increasing efficiency in the drilling of methane drainage or exploration boreholes. Approach The Bureau of Mines has pioneered the technique of methane control by drilling long, horizontal drainage holes from within the mine complex. It was recognized during the early drainage projects that a major portion of the drilling operation was dedicated to hole surveying. In some cases more time was actually being spent on the surveying operation than on drilling. The large amount of time required for hole surveying was the result of having to pump an instrument to the bottom of the hole, then retrieve it with an attached wire line. Naturally as hole depth increased, so did the amount of time needed to perform the survey operation. If the survey operation could be improved it was obvious that overall efficiency in drilling of long, horizontal methane drainage holes would be greatly increased. The Bureau of Mines, therefore, developed, fabricated and tested in an operating coal mine a permissible wireless survey system specifically designed for small diameter methane drainage drilling. The prototype survey system was completed in 1982 and was given the IR-100 Award by Industrial Research and Development Magazine. A second generation survey system is currently being constructed using updated state-of-the-art electronic technology. The second generation system will be more portable, more reliable, easier to maintain, and less costly.

Electromagnetic narrow-band signals were transmitted through the earth at 27 coal mines located throughout the United States. From those Bureau of Mines tests, apparent earth conductivity values were derived based upon a homogeneous half-space model of the earth. The derived conductivity values were found to be inversely proportional to the transmitted frequency and mine depth. A linear regression model relating the logarithm of the conductivity to the mine depth was formulated, and the results indicate that the mine depth can be an adequate predictor of the apparent earth conductivity above coal mines. Apparent earth conductivity was found to decrease with mine depth.

This Bureau of Mines study surveys the current state of technology and the various research efforts that have been undertaken to dewater the dilute phosphatic clays generated in the production of phosphate rock. The research described includes early dewatering experiments, fundamental studies of clays and of flocculation, and minor dewatering techniques such as freeze-thaw methods, the ANDCO process, moving screens, sand wick, crust development, and overburden pumping. Some methods that are currently being evaluated are described. They include the Estech sand-clay mix process using the Enviro-Clear thickener, sand-clay sandwiching, dredge mix, dredge process, and the sand-spray process. Developing technology for dewatering phosphatic clays also is described, including the Bureau of Mines rotary trommel method and the Gardinier process.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

Real gross national product increased at a larger-than- expected annual rate of 8.3 percent in the first quarter of 1984, with both consumption and investment spending increasing significantly in real terms (table 1). Residential and nonresidential fixed investment increased at annual rates of 25.7 and 14.6 percent during the first quarter of 1984, and investment in nonresidential structures, which declined in 1983, also increased during the first quarter of 1984, nearly attaining its 1982 level. The annual level of personal savings increased $27.7 billion, while the personal savings rate (the ratio of personal savings to disposable income) increased to 5.8 percent during the first quarter. The increase in the personal savings rate comes as welcome news to analysts concerned over the flow of loanable funds to the private sector and the impact on interest rates in 1984 of increased private and Government demands. U.S. Minerals Industry Performance A major upswing in the performance of the metal mining sector occurred during the first quarter of 1984, with production increasing almost 11.2 percent from January to March, The recovery of the metal sector is also reflected in the performance of primary metal industry profits, which were positive during fourth quarter 1983 following seven consecutive quarterly losses (table 1). Two thousand nine hundred more metal mining production workers were employed in February 1984 than in February 1983.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolin by leaching with boiling RCI in a train of three 50-gal continuous, stirred reactors. Slurry discharged from the reactors con-tained an excessive amount of fines, which impeded solid-liquid separation. Autogenous grinding of coarse solids that accumulated in the reactors was the source of the fines. This report describes modifications to the reactors and to the operations that led to decreased fines generation and improved solid-liquid separation. Modifications to the reactors included custom-made impellers, the addition of a baffle system, a subsurface slurry discharge system, and slower rotation of the impellers. Concurrent testing of a continuous horizontal belt filter showed that the form filtration rates were increased from 350 to almost 1,000 Ib/h+ ft-2 when the modified reactors were used.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

A remote-actuated stench gas fire-warning system has been designed and tested by the Bureau of Mines. This system makes use of the hard-wire network for the mine's phone pager system, thus greatly reducing the system cost. By locating stench gas canisters with remote-actuation release capabilities near working sections, the fire-warning time can be greatly reduced. In a test of the system in a Missouri lead mine, the time required to warn miners of a fire at two working faces was reduced from about 20min with the conventional system to less than 4 min with the remote-actuated system.

The Bureau of Mines examined the effects of high humidity and water droplets on the GCA Corp. real-time aerosol monitor (RAM--l). which uses a lO4mm cyclone preseparator. Tests were conducted both in a laboratory and in a full-scale model mine entry. The laboratory tests were conducted in a test chamber saturated with moisture and water droplets. Under these extreme conditions. the RAM-I responded by indicating dust concentrations of 1-1/2 to 2 mg/m3? although the air was dust free. Within the first 2 h of each test. water accumulated in the cyclone and affected the cyclone particle separation characteristics. resulting in readings of 3 to 4 mg/m3. In addition. condensation formed inside the RAM-I case and affected the liquid crystal display (LCD). However. the full-scale mine entry tests revealed that the RAM-I can function ac-ceptably in an atmosphere of water vapor and water droplets similar to the most severe conditions found in an underground mine.

Scale inhibitors and slow-release polymers were tested by the Bureau of Mines at mine drainage treatment facilities. The scale inhibitors were investigated to determine their effectiveness in controlling gypsum (CaSO4) scale; the polymers were investigated to determine their effectiveness for increasing settling rates of suspended iron hydroxide. Two types of scale inhibitors were tested at a site having a severe CaSO4 scaling problem. Both proved to be effective in controlling scale formation; in addition, one caused the dissolution of CaSO4 deposits. Slow-release polymers were tested at three mine drainage treatment facilities. These gelatinous polymeric flocculants were found to be convenient and easy to use, but only effective when pH could be controlled.

The Government of Belize maintained strict control over spending in 1982 as a means of protecting its import-dependent economy against the effects of a general worldwide recession. The modest economic performance was not expected to differ substantially from the $152 million2 gross national product (GNP) estimated for 1981. Exports and reexports were expected to decline in 1982, partly as a result of the Mexican peso devaluation. Imports were also expected to decline slightly in 1982, but the overall trade deficit was projected some-what higher than the $44 million experienced in 1981. On September 21, 1982, Belize became an independent state. As a result, the new Government became eligible for assistance from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Belize's independence from its former status as a colony of Great Britain was marred somewhat by the unsettled territorial dispute between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala declared Belize was a part of Guatemala and. therefore. refused to recognize it as an independent state. Negotations between Great Britain and Guatemala continued without resolution.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated potential availability of domestic nickel from 23 deposits, Evaluations included an estimation of in situ and recoverable resources, applicable mining and processing technologies, and capital and operating costs. Discounted cash flow analysis with a 15-pct rate of return was used to determine the average total cost of production of each operation, Identified in situ resources contain 9.0 million metric tons (t) of nickel; 5.5 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. Demonstrated in situ resources contain 8.2 million t of nickel; 4.8 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. No nickel is available at a total cost of production equal to the January 1983 market price of $3.24 per pound. Analyses indicate that potential annual production can only meet current consumption levels at a total cost of production of $7.60 per pound of nickel, Nickel's availability is contingent on (1) successful adaptability of nickel processing methods to domestic resources, (2) location of a smelting facility, and (3) marketability of byproducts and coproducts. Analyses were performed on the effects of byproduct and coproduct revenues, energy, labor, and transportation costs, and metallurgical recoveries on nickel's availability.

Develop methods to detect and repair poorly functioning dust collectors on roof bolters. Approach In conjunction with a research project to reduce silica dust in coal mines, a variety of roof bolting machines operating under different conditions were examined to find out how much these machines were contributing to the silica dust problem. Results The investigation concluded that if the bolting machines' dust collector is properly maintained, very little dust can be measured in the air, even with minimal airflow over the bolter. Poor maintenance, however, frequently results in high dust levels. Three major problem areas were found. These were: (1) filter leaks, which allowed dust to escape, (2) accumulations of dust in the collection system, and (3) low airflow at the bit due to hose, fitting, and relief valve leaks.
