This study of the rate of evaporation of zinc was undertaken as a part, of a general investigation on refining mixtures of metals resulting from melting reclaimed scrap. One of the methods by which the more volatile metals, such as zinc, magnesium, and cadmium, may be separated is by distillation. Distillation may be carried out at lower temperatures if it is done in an evacuated enclosure. The immediate purpose of the present investigation was to determine accurately the effect of temperature, pressure, and other factors on the rate of evaporation of zinc.

The development of the Sevier Valley Coal Co.'s mine marks the opening of the Salina Canon coal district in Utah. The mine is favorably located with respect, to the existing markets of the West, and if the present estimates of the amount of workable coal in it are accurate it has many Important advantages in favor of its development. This mine is situated 18 miles east of the town of Salina, Sevier County, Utah, which at present is the nearest shipping point oh the Marysvale branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and is about 152 miles south of Salt Lake City, which is the distributing center for much of the coal from the Carbon - Emery coal field and is the place from which nearly all Utah coal shipped to San Francisco and points on the northern Pacific coast has a common haul.

"IntroductionIn the study of mine drainage in the red iron ore mines of the Birmingham district of Alabama, an extensive series of measurements were made in order to determine the drainage from the area overlying and adjacent to the mines. Gaging rods were generally used in measuring streams, and weirs in ditches and sometimes as a check on rod work. These tests in turn were checked by current meter tests. In all, 725 separate stream gagings and 97 weir measurements were made. Certain relationships were worked out, particularly between rod and weir tests, which permitted obtaining results that are much more accurate 'under the existing conditions, than any available formula would give. The large number of weir measurements and the period covered by the tests made it impracticable to construct a weir for each observation so portable, adjustable weirs were built. The methods used are described here for the benefit of those interested in measurement of streams in connection with a study of mine drainage or otherwise. The Drainage AreaThe area draining the mining district lies between the crest of Red Mountain and Little Shades Creek, and for convenience was divided into sub-districts adjacent to certain groups of mines. Gaging stations were established on Little Shades Creek at the upper and lower boundaries of each sub-district, also at points on the tributaries near their junction with the creek. The difference between the volumes of water flowing in Little Shades Creek as it entered and left the sub-districts represents the flow from the tributaries on both sides of the creek. Since the flow coming from the sub-districts was measured direct, the inflow from the tributaries on the opposite side of the creek can be computed from the three volumes determined."

The possible value of the red hematite iron ore of the southern Appalachian States, if some practicable method of concentrating it could be devised, has long been recognized. The ore is very low grade, and although in enormous quantities, particularly in the States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, is only at a few points rich enough to work, and even the best of it ranks among the lowest grade iron ores being mined in the United States. A cheap method of beneficiating this ore would make enormous quantities available and vastly increase the iron-ore resources of the country. However, this low-grade ore in effect constitutes a potential iron reserve, and as long as ample quantities of ore can be obtained elsewhere the question of its utilization does not demand immediate notice. Where these ores are in part of workable grade, however, a problem of more immediate importance arises which, from considerations of economy and prevention of waste in their mining, ought to be solved or, at least, attacked as quickly as possible. Where these ores are being worked they are usually intimately associated with lowergrade material that in mining is left behind. The difficulty and expense of going into ground broken by old workings makes the recovery of this lower-grade ore practically impossible and it is lost forever. Success in concentrating the red ores, therefore, would save material that is now being irretrievably lost. The successful largescale concentration of low-grade ore in the last few years on the Lake Superior iron ranges should encourage the attack of similar problems in the Birmingham district. While studying iron-mining methods in the United States for the Bureau of Mines, Dwight E. Woodbridge, consulting mining engineer of the bureau, was impressed with the importance of this problem, and believed it merited the attention of the bureau. Accordingly, Mr. Woodbridge had Mr. W. J. Penhallegon, general superintendent of ore mines and quarries of the Republic Iron & Steel Co., of Birmingham, send the author of this report five samples of the unworkable siliceous ores of the district. The results of concentration experiments with these ores made a more thorough 'and systematic investigation desirable. In consequence, the author subsequently collected samples in the district, and these became the basis of the experimental work described in this report. The results are published by the Bureau of Mines as a part of its efforts to increase efficiency in the utilization of mineral resources. The experiments were conducted in the geological laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md., with the aid of Raymond Leibensperger, mining assistant. The chemical analyses were made by A. C. Fieldner, chemist, of the Bureau of Mines. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the courtesies extended to him by the mining companies of the district, and particularly to Mr. W. J. Penhallegon, of the Republic Iron & Steel Co. An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission. "The distribution of the wettability of coals of different rank was determined by measurements of contact angles for individual particles. The contact angle was estimated from the equilibrium partitioning of a particle at the water/air interface. Using this technique contact angles were determined for a larger number of particles from a given sample and a frequency distribution of contact angle was obtained. The contact angle distribution was broad for all the coals tested with included an anthracite, a hvA bituminous and a sub-bituminous coal. In comparison, spherical particles of polymethylmethacrylaie gave a much narrower distribution. The distribution for irregular polyethylene particles was somewhat broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but considerably narrower than that for coal. The broader wetting distribution for coal was attributed to differences in surface chemical properties.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the wetting properties of coals is very useful in coal cleaning by flotation and other processes in which separations are based on differential surface properties. The various methods available for measuring wetting characteristics include: contact angle, 1-2 time, time, 3-5 bubble attachment, 6 film flotation,7 displacement pressure, 8-9 penetration rate, 10-11 bubble pick-up, 12 induction time, 13 imbibition time, 14 and calorimetry. 15-16 Of all these methods, however, the measure¬ment of contact angle by the sessile drop and captive bubble techniques have been most widely used. Brady and Gauger"" demonstrated through the use of the contact angle method that the natural hydrophobicity of coal varied greatly from sample to sample. Subsequent experiments showed that this difference correlated well with rank, the larger contact angles generally being associated with the higher rank coals. 18-19 More recent studies by Aplan and co-workers' show that the wettability of various ranks of coals as determined by sessile drop and captive bubble methods is a more complex function of rank. The hydrophobicity of coal usually increases with rank up to about 80% fixed carbon (dmmf) and then decreases."

During the World War Leadville was an important producer of manganese and maganiferous ores for then steel industry. Normally, the market for these ores is limited to the requirements of the local steel mill at Pueblo for low-grade ores used in making, basic pig iron containing 1 to 2 percent Mr and spiegoloison containing 20 percent Mn, but during the war and a brief period of postwar readjustment, a good deal of 25- to 40-percent manganese ore qua shipped to in-stern steel-manufacturing centers. Throughout the active life of the camp, manganiferous iron ore carrying a little silver and lead and sometimes as such as 35 percent Mn was chipped to load smelters for flux. The total reordered production is 936,024 tons of metallurgical ore shinned to steel mills and 2,576,514 tons of fluxing ore, much of it of metallurgical grade.

"INTRODUCTION When permissible explosives are used in c procedure recommended by the Bureau of Mines 5/ they are relatively safe, and, no mine explosions are known to have resulted from this type of blasting. However, unsafe blasting practices - the use of nonpermissible explosives or the improper use of permissible explosives - have caused many serious disasters. In fact, such unsafe practices constitute the third most important cause (exceeded only by electricity and the use of open lights and smoking) of coal-mine explosions in the United States. During 1929-1947, inclusive, 81 explosions, resulting in 475 fatalities, were ascribed to unsafe blasting. 6/The hazards of black powder, dynamite, and other nonpermissible explosives in coal mines have been recognized for many years, and attention has been called to this in numerous Bureau of Mines publications. Not only can these explosives ignite flammable gas-air mixtures readily, but they can also ignite coal dust, as has been illustrated repeatedly in tests and at educational public demonstrations at Bruceton and elsewhere. 7/Research in the Experimental coal mine 8/ of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., and unfortunate experience in commercial mines have proved beyond doubt that improper use of explosives that have passed the official permissibility tests can cause as explosions. In limited tests with a fey American permissibles at Bruceton, and in more, extensive tests with permitted explosives at the Polish experiment station, 9/ explosive charges were fired from steel cannon and freely suspended in coal-dust clouds. In these experiments coal dust was ignited under some conditions. However, it has never been definitely established whether permissible explosives can initiate coal-dust explosions when fired in a coal seam. It is true that a few mine explosions were strongly suspected to have resulted from ignition of coal dust by misuse of permissibles, but in each case other complicating factors introduced some doubt in the minds of the investigators. Full knowledge of the problem is important, because coal dust is present in most blasting operations in coal."

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of McDowell County, W. Va. Coals from 14 coal beds were selected for study: Upper Cedar Grove, Middle Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Eagle, Douglas, Iaeger, Sewell, Welch, Beckley, Fire Creek and Pocahontas Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 9. Selection was based upon estimated minable reserves. McDowell County coals rank either as high-volatile A, medium-volatile, or low-volatile bituminous coal, and this variation in rank is reflected in the wide diversity of the carbonization properties of the coals. All coals tested were either satisfactory as mined or could be upgraded to meet present chemical standards for metallurgical coke; the coals produced strong coke, as determined by ASTM shatter and tumbler tests.

As part of an ongoing program to develop high-quality materials with improved performance and service lives, and to conserve critical minerals, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, researchers studied the process of hot-rolling metals, alloys, and composites in vacuum. First, a comprehensive review of the literature is presented, including the advantages and disadvantages of using vacuum. Next, details of hot-rolling titanium, chromium, and molybdenum-iron bimetal are given. Finally, the design of new equipment is described. At this time, it is uncertain whether hot-rolling metals in vacuum will gain commercial acceptance in the future.

A computer program for calculating capital and operating costs from material and energy requirements and equipment costs for use in preparing cost estimates for metallurgical process evaluations has been written by the Bureau of Mines&apos; College Park process evaluation group. The program permits rapid recalculation of processing costs when changes of data or equipment are desired, and produces tables of capital and operating costs suitable for publication. Equipment cost summary tables for each process section end supplemental information for input-data checking is included in the computer printout. The program is written in Fortran IV except for several subroutines which are written in machine assembly language for the IBM 7094.3 With a few modifications, the program can be used on other computers.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of complex gas mixtures, such as would be produced by coal gasification, for reducing iron oxide pellets. A semiempirical model was developed to predict a priori the reduction rate of an iron oxide pellet in a laboratory tube furnace with simulated coal gases at a total pressure of 1 atm. The model uses partial pressures of H2, CO, CO2, CH4 (methane), water vapor, and a temperature-dependent term to predict the rate of reaction. The reduction rate (weight loss per unit of time) was determined with a thermo-gravimetric apparatus (TGA) in the temperature range of 800° to 1,100° C. The ranking of the reductants, in order of decreasing reducing potential, is H2, CO, and CH4 at temperatures between 800° and 1,000° C; however, CH4 became a better reductant than CO at 1,100° C. Water vapor did not decrease the reduction rate as much as did CO2, Carbon deposition was observed at temperatures below 1,000° C with gas mixtures with high CO and low H2 concentrations. With low-Btu gas at 900° C, over 90 pct of the iron oxide was reduced to iron in less than 3 h. This com-pares with a reduction time of 1.5 h with medium-Btu gas and 1 h with reformed natural gases.

An important function of stemming used to confine explosives in shot holes in underground coal mines is to minimize the chance of ignition of firedamp or coal dust by the detonation products. Until 1952, the Bureau of Mines approved only the use of fireclay or similar incombustible material for stemming permissible explosives. At least 2 feet of stemming were required except in holes less than 4 feet deep; in such short holes the stemming was required to be half the depth of the hole. Over the years, several special stemming devices have been proposed in the United States as substitutes for fireclay. Many economic and safety advantages were claimed for these devices, but only one approved device has been marketed in this country. Bureau requirements for stemming explosives in coal mines were modified at that time to permit the approved stemming device to be used as a substitute for the required fireclay.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycle plants in the United States as of January 1, 1952 was 811,596 barrels per day, an increase of 163,691 barrels per day since the last survey on January 1, 1950. The rate of growth during these 2 years has been 12 percent per year s only slightly below the maximum rate, recorded from 1948-50. This survey, for the first time, presents capacity data on a barrel rather than a gallon basis. Also, for the first time, a break-down of capacity by products has been obtained. The combined LP-gas producing capacity of plants and fractionators equaled 382,790 barrels per day, 47 percent of the total industry capacity tor all products. During January 1952, LP-gas and natural gasoline and other products were each produced at the rate of 76 percent of the January 1 capacity.

The object of this program was to design and build a self-contained system for remote monitoring of the atmosphere in mines. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line as the primary communication channel and also has the capability of using 208 Hz in the ELF band for wireless transmission through the earth. The depth for through-the-earth transmission is expected to be about 80 to 90 meters in high conductivity soil and is limited by the noise level in the ELF band-pass filters. The underground components of the TEM System are energized by mine power through a battery charger - storage battery power supply. In the event of mine power failure the battery capacity is more than sufficient for one week&apos;s operation with interrogations every four hours.

Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps.

As part of its efforts to devise new and improved methods for recovering lithium from unconventional resources , the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime -gypsum- roast , water- leach technique for processing lithiumenriched ( 0.01-0.68 pct Li ) clays . This report presents the results of a study of the technical feasibility of extracting lithium from raw material representative of clay beds associated with the McDermitt Caldera complex in Nevada and Oregon . prepared from water used Pellets suitable for bench-scale roasting studies were mixtures of minus 200 -mesh clay , limestone , and gypsum , with as the pelletizing agent . Roasting pelletized charges at 900 ° to 1,000° C temperatures for 1- to 4-h periods produced calcines that leached readily , yielding water - soluble lithium sulfate ( Li₂SO4 ) . A 5-3-3 ( weight ratio ) mix of clay , limestone , and gypsum produced calcines with the best leaching characteristics . More than 91 pct of the contained lithium was extracted from pelletized mix batches roasted in covered refractory boats . Lithium recovery decreased to about 87 pct when the mix was roasted under dynamic conditions in a gas - fired rotary furnace . A reaction mechanism was postulated which indicated that dilution and loss of SO2 and oxygen in the combustion exhaust adversely affected the leachability of the dynamically roasted calcine .

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for front-end loaders. Approach Automatic fire sensing and suppression systems were developed and ruggedized for use on front-end loaders operating in harsh mine environments. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted in the loader&apos;s engine, transmission, and articulation areas detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. This triggers the release of the ABC class dry chemical extinguishing agent through a fixed piping system onto the fire. The system can also be manually activated from either the cab or ground level. Locations of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing. Two control subsystems were designed to respond to varying fire protection needs and mine conditions. One subsystem only initiates discharge of the extinguishing agent. The other subsystem initiates visual and audible operator alarms if there is a fire sensed or if there is a fault in the control circuit.
