Scrap iron and steel attracted attention during 1937 because of the unprecedented exports and the concomitant agitation in some quarters to prohibit the exportation of this essential raw material except on license by the President. This report does not attempt to analyze the statistics given in the light of the controversy over the limitation of scrap exports, but it is believed that students of this problem will find many essential basic data in the various tables presented herein. This paper presents the results of the third in the series of annual canvasses on the consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron in the United States. As part of a project to develop refractory metal alloys suitable for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation-hardening techniques to columbium and tantalum alloys. Thirty-three alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, strength, and oxidation resistance. Three alloys had tensile strengths near 40,000 psi at 1,200° C: Cb-1N-5W-5V-10Hf (No.4), Cb-15Hf-5W-0.5B (No. 31), and Cb-15Hf-SW-IB (No. 32). Oxidation resistance of the high-strength alloys was good. Alloy4 gained only 34 mg/cm2 at 1,200° C, and 21 mg/cm2 at 1,000° C in 2 hours. Hot forming was done without any protection from oxidation.

The Rush & Brown mine has been one of the most consistent small producers of copper ore in the history of Alaskan mining. Approximately 50,000 tons of ore have been shipped to smelters from the property. Production has been made from two distinct and separate ore bodies of dissimilar types. The Shear Vein deposit has been mined to a depth of 500 feet below the surface without a reduction in the size of the ore shoot or the grade of ore. The Magnetite ore body has been partly mined to a depth of 200 feet below the surface. Because of the favorable production record of the Rush & Brown mine, the present need for copper and the fact that the owners were attempting to place the mine in production, it was deemed advisable to investigate this property under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 as a possible source of copper.

From 1895 to 1932, inclusive, 1,0163/ men were killed in and about New Mexico coal mines. Of these, 473 (approximately 47 percent) were killed in the 17 explosions listed in this paper. The second largest explosion of record in the United States, in so far as fatalities are concerned, occurred in New Mexico. The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the State inspector of coal mines of New Mexico. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. A few minor disasters are included, however.

"It is well known by all who are familiar with the oil industry in America that the oil pipe line is as fundamentally a part of this industry as the railroad is of most other American industries. The oil pipe line was first introduced about 56 years ago, and since that time has so demonstrated its superiority as a means of carrying crude oil froze the well to the refinery, that this method of transportation has largely superseded all others. This has made possible the building of refineries in or near the large consuming centers, rather than at the wells, which are usually remote from the centers of population.The pipes for conveying the oil are laid on the surface of the ground, or at a depth varying from 18 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface, and the main lines are generally eight inches in diameter. The oil is forced through the pipes by means of pumps operated either by steam or by internal combustion engines. The pump stations are located from 1 1/2 to 90 miles apart, varying with the condition of the country through which the pipe lines extend, and the viscosity of the oil to be handled.Some of the larger pipe-line systems and hundreds of miles in length. It is estimated by the U. S. Geological Survey that the total mileage of oil trunk lines in the United States today is approximately 34,000, and that the gathering systems, which are a fundamental part of the trunk systems, aggregate about 11,500 miles in length, making a total of 45,500 miles.Using those figures as a basis, some general conclusions as to the investment represented will be made. At the time most of the lines were constructed, the average cost per mile based on eight-inch pipe was about $6,500. The cost of the average pump station at that time varied from $130,000 to $250,000. The cost at the present time, on account of the increase in price of labor and materials, would be much in excess of these figures. The fixed investment in pipe lines is, therefore, very extensive. It corresponds closely with the actual cost of the property, and is estimated to be approximately $500,000,000."

"INTRODUCTIONHydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with crude oil. Hydrocarbon (petroleum) vapors themselves are harmful to the human system, but hydrogen sulphide, when present, is usually more important from the standpoint of health and safety. These conclusions were reached in an investigation of the toxic gases encountered in the transportation end refining of high-sulphur petroleum. The results of that investigation are presented in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 23l. although the writers of Bulletin 231 paid no direct attention to the production of oil in the field, they attributed to hydrogen sulphide reports of accidents caused by gas in the oil fields of Mexico.During the development of oil fields in Texas, a ""poison gas"" was encountered that constituted a decided health and safety hazard. The present report discusses an investigation of this gas made in July, 1926.The major portion of the investigation was conducted in the Panhandle field of Texas, but the study also includes the Big Lake and McCamey fields.Scope of WorkThe work undertaken in each field included:Examination of the gas-coming from representative wells at various locations in the field; also analyses of the gas-air mixtures to which the workmen were or might be exposed.Observation of symptoms of poisoning and severity of these symptoms."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if commercially available automatic sprinklers could withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines without leaking and if exposure to the mine environment affected their leak pressures. New sprinklers and sprinklers exposed to the mine environment were subjected to increasing pressures until leakage occurred. The average leak pressures of the new sprinklers ranged from 640 to 2,300 psig and were significantly different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Generally, standard-response sprinklers withstood higher pressures than fast-response sprinklers. The results indicated that most commercially available sprinklers would withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines; however, they would not provide the same reliability and safety factor as sprinklers used aboveground at or below their rated pressure of 175 psig. The average leak pressures of the sprinklers exposed to the mine environment ranged from 740 to 1,180 psig. The mine environment affected the ability of 66% of the sprinklers to withstand high static pressure New sprinklers were also evaluated at pressures of at least 500 psig for 30 days to determine their ability to withstand long-term exposure to high static pressures; no leakage was observed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted both laboratory and field investigations to study the effectiveness of medium-pressure (up to 30,000 psi) water jets in controlling the generation of airborne respirable dust during the hydraulic fragmentation of coal. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Farmington High Energy Test Site of the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, and field studies were carried out at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, Mount Morris, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The water jets were produced by commercially available triplex pumps. The dust samples were collected by midget impinger samplers, and analyzed by electronic and optical counting techniques. Respirable dust concentration for a full-scale production model was projected at below 2 mg/m3, the maximum exposure allowed by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

"IntroductionThe evaporation losses of gasoline in the refinery, can be reduced by proper methods of refinery construction and operation. When gasoline evaporates slowly, as when stored in tanks that are not vapor tight, the most volatile part evaporates first, so that the remaining liquid in not only less in volume, but is also lower in quality. In some,evaporation changes the characteristics of the product so much that it must be reblended to meet trade specifications.Refiners are, therefore, greatly interested in the various appliances and methods used to reduce these losses. In the past this interest has been directed largely to storage tanks, probably because evaporation from tanks is more readily observed than losses during other refinery operations. As tests by the Bureau of Mines on evaporation of gasoline from small storage tanks had indicated that the losses during the various stages of refining might be equal to or greater than those of standing storage, a survey was during the spring and early summer months of 1924 in a large number of refineries in the Mid-Continent field. In order to enable the refiner to select the results of those tests that conform most nearly to the conditions that he has to meet, tests were conducted at various stages of refining, as follows: (1) Randown tanks, (2) (agitators), (3) filling tank cars, (4) storage of refined products, and (3) miscellaneous handling. The results are presented in this paper."

With suitable instrumentation and techniques it is possible to determine the presence of tantalum in columbium to 20 ppm . This paper discusses the selection of X- ray spectrographic instrumentation and describes a technique for accomplishing the low level determination of tantalum . An ion- exchange method of separating tantalum from columbium is also described .

The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers of Alabama, is making a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data from the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists of screen-sizing and sink-and-float data on the America and Pratt beds at Gorgas, Ala.SAMPLING AT THE MINESAlthough operations were discontinued in 1929, the accessible openings of the old Gorgas mines of the Southeastern Fuel Co. made possible the taking of samples from the America bed at three openings and from the Pratt bed at two openings. A sample was taken from the America bed at the Klondyke opening; a second was taken about 1 rile south of the Klondyke at the Musgrove America opening, and a third sample was taken about 1-1/2 miles south of the Musgrove-America at the Cricket Lodge opening. A sample was taken from the Pratt bed at Musgrove-Pratt No. 1, which is about 3/4 mile east of Musgrove-America, and a second sample was taken at Musgrove-Pratt No. 2, which is about 3/4 mile west of Musgrove-America. The samples ranged in weight from 1/2 ton to 1 ton and were equivalent to approximately a 2-ton sample from each bed. Figure 1 shows sections of the beds at the places sampled.In addition to the samples for washability study, a seam sample for analysis was taken at each of the places sampled. So as to give a representative seam sample for each of the two beds, these samples were combined in the laboratory in proportion to the thickness of the bed at the places sampled."

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. Reservoir oil analyses from seven wells in the Greater Clareton area have been included in a study of the original characteristics of oil in the Newcastle sandstone reservoir . These data correlated with areal location of the wells show an increase of saturation pressure in a general north - south or downdip direction . The increase amounts to about 500 psi in more than 17 miles , which corresponds to a depth increase of about 1,600 feet . To facilitate application of the data to engineering analyses , average characteristics are given for arbitrary north and south divisions of the 22 - mile - long producing area . The downdip increase of saturation pressure is taken as evidence of updip diffusion of solution gas from a somewhat higher concentration at the bottom of the reservoir . This effect is opposite to that previously observed in two prominent high- relief reservoirs in the Rocky Mountain area . The increasingly greater saturation pressures southward or downdip in the Greater Clareton area suggest a continuing migration of fluids into the structure .

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 44 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry, despite the fact that the number of fatalities from this cause during the past fiscal year now is nearly double that of the previous year. During there 4 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 45.5 deaths per year, compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3 years 1907-1909, inclusive, and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20 years prior to 1929. Other types of mine accidents also have been reduced during this period, but not to the same degree or by as large a percentage as mine explosions. The fact that in this fiscal year ended June 30, 1937, electricity was responsible for 60 percent of the explosions and 85.5 percent of the fatalities resulting therefrom (see tables 3 and 4) is evidence that either mine operators are lax in providing proper electrical equipment or there is laxity in the upkeep and use of electricity in our mines and more particularly in our coal mines. Several large coal-producing States that in the Fast have had numerous disastrous explosions have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as long as 8 years. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, one of the largest coal-producing States, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions. 'his State, with its large number of operating mines, many with very definite hazards from gas or dust or both, has had only two major explosions (resulting in 16 fatalities) during the past 7 years; this is a decidedly good record compared with any similar period in the past and when it is considered that during this period about 750,000,000 tons of coal have been produced. Other good records are: Tennessee, without a single fatality from explosions during the past 9 years; Alabama, with 6 fatalities during the past 7 years; Illinois, with no explosions during the past 4 years; and

The standard heats of formation (?Hf°) of holmium trichloride and terbium trichloride were measured by solution calorimetry. Heats of solution of holmium and terbium metals and their anhydrous chlorides were measured in 4.360 molal HCI at 298.15° K. From these measurements ?Hf° for HoC13 (c) was calculated as -240,290 ±1,700 cal/mo1e, and ?Hf° for TbC13 (c) was calculated as -238,330 ±1,500 cal/mole at 298.15° K.

The Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Obstacle and Demolition Branch, Engineer Research and Development Laboratories, Department of the Army, undertook some extensive tests to determine the effectiveness and limitations of using standard demolition-type shaped charges in underground Mining. The tests proved the shaped charge has no practical application in the functions of mining covered by this report. At an approximate cost of 0 per foot hole plus spall produced by the most efficient single shots with the M3 shaped charge, the cost is over 20 times that of producing a better hole with a rock drill. The concussion would prohibit its use in many mines, and the excess carbon monoxide gas liberated by the pontolite explosive would be an additional hazard when used underground.

Explosion hazards that may exist when air becomes polluted with combustible gases and vapors are extremely dangerous, particularly if the volume of gaseous atmosphere is large, and an explosion under such circumstances could do tremendous damage to persons and property. The hazard is even greater if explosive mixtures are confined under high pressure, as the pressure could increase to tremendous proportions just before the container would rupture. Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the flammability (explosibility) of various types of combustible atmospheres and published its findings. The explosibility of natural gas has been studied, and the limits of flammability have been determined and published. Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.
