Bureau of Mines research on the hydrogenation of coal has been concerned with developing processes that could be used to supplement the Nation's petroleum and natural gas resources. Motor fuel was produced in a subsidized coal hydrogenation industry in Europe prior to 1945, but the process used is still not economical and other methods of producing liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are being investigated. As an aid to the planning of coal hydrogenation research, a literature survey was made of processes or methods of hydrogenating coal that differ from the subsidized or conventional process. This report contains a bibliography of unconventional methods of hydrogenating coal and a brief discussion of the economics of the conventional method. A general discussion of unconventional methods is included, and the advantages and disadvantages are pointed out where possible. The survey supplements a previous Bureau of Mines survey3 and a comprehensive review published in 1930.4

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys containing lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and magnesium (4g) as possible components of a permanent magnet mate¬rial utilizing a cerium-free synthetic mischmetal (M) as a substitute for scarce samarium (Sm) metal. Magnets containing M-Co-Cu-Mg and M-Co-Cu-Fe-Mg were fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques and evaluated. A synthetic mischmetal (M20) containing 20 pct La, 60 Pr, and 20 Nd yielded the best overall magnetic properties. The M20-Co-Cu-Mg alloys had energy products as high as 13.2 MGOe, remanences as high as 7.89 kG, normal coercivities as high as 6.26 kOe, and intrinsic coercivities as high as 13.4 kOe. The best value of intrinsic coercivity, 22.9 kOe, was obtained with an M-Co-Cu-Mg magnet in which the synthetic misch¬metal contained 30 pct La, 50 Pr, and 20 Nd. These values compare favorably with those of the Sm-Co magnets fabricated and measured at the Bureau's Reno Research Center, which had energy product of 15.1 MGOe, remanence of 7.8 kG, normal coercivity of 7.5 kOe, and intrinsic coercivity of 27.4 kOe. Iron substitution for part of the cobalt resulted in a decrease of magnetic properties, although several percent iron can be added before a drastic loss of magnetic properties occurs.

1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.

Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres which might, through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. This paper presents the second of these surveys, which covers conditions in Belgium.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and larger scale studies on samples of domestic perovskite and ilmenite ore concentrates to devise a procedure for recovering TiC from these ores. From the concentrates, mixtures of titanium and calcium carbides were produced. The carbides were then ground and reacted with water. This reaction decomposed the CaC2 to acetylene and hydrated lime and simultaneously liberated the TiC. Using a combination of elutriation and gravity-separation techniques to separate the hydrated lime, approximately 93 pct of the titanium was subsequently recovered as purified carbide containing 54 to 70 pct titanium with CaO content as low as 0,6 pct. This combination of techniques can be used to separate more than 90 pct of the CaO from the TiC. Therefore, this carbiding procedure is a viable method for treating titaniferous materials, including perovskite, that contain more than 20 pct CaO. Tests made in a static-bed reactor showed that for the reaction of TiC with elemental chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4), a temperature of at least 940° F is desirable to achieve a suitable extraction of titanium in a laboratory chlorination reactor. In fluidized-bed tests at 840° F, 98 pct of the titanium contained in TiC was extracted.

This report summarizes work performed under Phase I of USBM Contract No. H0366024, Noise Reduction of Jumbo Mounted Percussive Drills. Four drills -Gardner-Denver D93LAR and DH123 and Ingersoll-Rand 0475 and VL120 models were measured at the two manufacturers? test sites; data are given in terms of characteristic noise and vibration levels. A survey of percussive rock drill users is reported. The rationale for the choice of a demonstration drill, the Gardner-Denver DH123, is given and a desired noise reduction goal is established.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of gamma radiation on reactions between Pennsylvania anthracite and fluorine and chlorine. In the tests with fluorine about 90 percent of the coal reacted at 350° C to form volatile products whether or not irradiation was employed. Up to 0.8 ml of liquid products per gram of anthracite was collected. Among the 25 com-pounds indicated by gas chromatography, fluoroform and l,l-difluoroethylene were tentatively identified from their relative retention times and perfluoro-cyclopentane from its infrared spectrum. In addition, a clear, hard, wax, probably a fluorocarbon, was formed at 45° C in both the presence and absence of radiation. With chlorine there was no significant difference due to radiation, and preliminary tests indicated that the chlorine reacted more with the organic matter of anthracite at 200° C than with inorganic matter. At 400° C the results were inconclusive because of excessive corrosion in the reaction vessel.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is currently conducting a four-year study to assess the mineral resources and the mineral development potential of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD) located in southcentral Alaska. The VCMD study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1988 field work. The field work involved collection of reconnaissance placer and rock samples, and also involved sampling and examination of the mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences which were identified by literature research of the geology, exploration history, and mining history of the district. During the 1988 field season, Bureau personnel spent a total of 11 weeks in the field, collected 1,006 rock and placer samples, and located, mapped, and sampled 106 of the known mineral occurrences. The Bureau has visited 243 of the 250 known mineral occurrences during the course of the VCMD project. Reconnaissance sampling for placer occurrences resulted in the identification of 4 previously unreported gold placer occurrences, and identification of 5 occurrences that contain detectable levels of platinum or palladium. Reconnaissance sampling for lode sources of base and precious metals resulted in the identification of 5 new Lode gold-silver occurrences, identification of 2 occurrences that contain elevated quantities of chromium, cobalt, nickel, palladium, and platinum, and identification of one occurrence that contains elevated quantities of copper, molybdenum, anti zinc.

The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

During studies of the various methods for determining and specifying the factors that indicate whether a particular coke is better or worse than other cokes for metallurgical uses, questions arose as to the precision of screen-analysis tests on coke. Although the usual index of precision, the standard deviation of the test result, gives a measure of the precision of these data, the experimental determination of the standard deviation for a particular set of conditions requires tests on a large number of duplicate samples. Because this procedure necessaily involves a great deal of labor, an equation for predicting standard deviations from theoretical considerations has been developed. Results predicted with this equation agree satisfactorily with the experimental values and are applicable to tests on coal, coke, gravel, and other bulk materials.

The panic bars (and associated linkage's and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on Self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and soma commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

Measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise and attenuation along a hoist rope were made in an operating hard-rock mine, Lucky Friday Mine, located near Wallace, Idaho. Spectra of electromagnetic noise generated by various pieces of equipment, spectra of specific noise signals at various depths, and noise and attenuation on the 4250 foot (1295 meter) hoist, were measured. Three techniques were used to make the measurements. First, noise was measured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data were recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape for later transformation to spectral plots. Second, noise amplitudes were recorded at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide data for amplitude probability distributions. A third technique gave attenuation data through the direct measurement of field strength at various depths. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots, amplitude probability distribution plots and amplitude curves as a function of depth.

The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.

The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

This paper presents the results of the second in the series of annual canvasses on the consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron in the United States, inaugurated in 1935 by the Bureau of Mines and published in Report of Investigations 3329. The study was undertaken in response to requests from trade organizations and others for detailed statistics on this phase of the iron and steel industry. Thus, for the first time, producers, buyers, sellers, and consumers of iron and steel scrap have had an accurate statistical picture of this important raw material As originally contemplated, the study was to be continued on an annual basis, but, owing to budgetary limitations for the fiscal year 1937-38, the Bureau may be unable to conduct the canvass for 1937.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. "Using propidium assay and flow cytometry, we examined how silica exerts its toxicity toward phagocytic cells employing the human neutrophil as a model. This toxicity appears to be associated with calcium bound to silica. Once the silica with calcium is phagocytized, the extra calcium causes the death of the cell. Using ""Ca we found that 6 to 10% of millimolar calcium is bound to milligram amounts of respirable-sized silica (diameter of 5 µ.m or less) at physiological pH. If the silica particles arc coated with an organosilanc (Prosil 28). calcium binding is decreased by 60% as is cell death. Pretreating with INDO IAM (a chelator of intracellular calcium) reduces the cellular death by 80%. Nonfibrogcnic particles- polystyrene beads or coal dust-produced 10% or less cell death in a 4-h period. Silica with no added, external calcium appears to exert toxicity to neutrophils; however, pretreating cells with EDT A decreases cellular death to the level of nonfibrogcnic particles. Chronic toxicity with silica-calcium appears similar to the chronic toxicity in gout where particles cause a cycle of inflammation. c 1993 Academic Press, Inc.Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by the inhalation of fine particles of silica, usually between 0.1 and 5 µ.m in diameter (1). A recent hypothesis explaining silica's toxicity suggested that surface free radicals caused damage to cells (2). This explanation appears doubtful, however, since the addition of silica to water, such as that found in biological systems, quenches free radicals; also, such a hypothesis does not provide basis for a persistent inflammatory pattern that lasts for years. Kane et al. (3) proposed that silica's toxicity resulted from an excessive concentration of calcium ions within the phagocytic cell (macrophages). However, the mechanism that was capable of linking silica to an excess of intracellular, ionic calcium was not explained. The surface of silica is certainly involved because covering the surface with polymers or phospholipids decreases silica's toxicity (4-6).When silica is engulfed by macrophages platelet activating factor and leukotrienes are produced (7, 8). This is the same inflammatory pattern produced by phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore A23187 and ionic calcium. How could silica be acting like A23187? Perhaps calcium binds to silica extracellulary and then is released intracellulary following phagocytosis; the latter process, in a sense a ""piggy back"" process, would permit activation of inflammation and cell death mechanisms."
