"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI)· by NAD(P)H. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O 2) to NAD(P)H-Cr(VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) signal and generates hydroxyl (·OH) radicals (as detected via spin trapping), suggesting that Cr(V) reacts with H2O 2 to generate the ·OH radicals. Reaction between H2O 2 and a Cr(V)·glutathione complex, and between H2O 2 and several Cr(V)-carboxylato complexes also produces ·OH radicals. These results suggest that Cr(V) complexes catalyze the generation of ·OH radicals from H2O 2, and that ·OH radicals might play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) cytotoxicity. KEY WORDS: ESR. spin trapping, Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(V), hydrogen peroxide, free radicals.INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports an ESR spin trapping detection of hydroxyl ( OH) radicals.in reactions between some Cr(V) complexes containing biologically important ligands and hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2 ). This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, the reaction· mechanism is not yet clear. 1 Mutagencity has been well documented for Cr(VI) via various bacterial assays, while Cr(III) has been shown not to be mutagenic.2 • 3 Since it has been reported that compounds containing Cr(VI) do not react with isolated DNA,4 the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular constituents has been thought to be important in the mechanism of Cr(VI) induced DNA alteration.1·4 • 5 For cellular systems earlier studies include those on the reduction of C~(VI) by microsomes,6-8 rat liver DT-diaphorase,9 and aldehyde oxidase. 10 Regarding the reduction mechanism, Jennette used ESR spectroscopy to show that a long-lived Cr(V) complex is formed as an intermediate in the microsomal reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of NADPH.8 She postulated that Cr(V) is the ""ultimate"" carcinogenic form of chromium compounds. This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions.11 - 19 More recently, however, it has been suggested that oxygen-derived radicals generated during the Cr(VI) reduction are the species responsible for the DNA alteration.20.2• To the best of our knowledge, however, no information is available on the generation of such radicals in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions, except some preliminary results on the glutathionyl (GS·) radical formation in the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH). 11 - 19 We, therefore, undertook a systematic investigation of the reaction of Cr(VI) with NAD(P)H, GSH, ix-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and H2O 2 • NADPH was chosen as a model reductant because of its ubiquitous existence inside the cells, its critical role in the enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction,1·6-9 its representation of important cellular Cr(VI) reductants, and its ability to reduce other metal ions.22 GSH was chosen as another model Cr(VI) reductant because GSH also exists inside cells, it represents another important category of cellular Cr(VI) reductants, the thiols, and it also plays an important role in the Cr(VI) toxicity .1• 1 ""- 19.i3.i4 For further clarification, we also studied the reaction of Cr(VI) with several '1'.-hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of H2O 2 since these acids are definitively known to reduce Cr(VJ) to form stable, isolable Cr(V).25 .2 6 The results obtained indicate that Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VJ) by cellular reductants, react with H2 O 2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might be the initiators of primary events in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity."

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. "The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

Recent dry-top electric smelting tests at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., indicate that a high-titanium slag and a good grade of pig iron can be produced from alluvial Idaho ilmenite. A total of 120 tons of concentrates were smelted during this investigation, to yield an average of 0.5 ton of slag and 0.3 ton of pig iron per ton of ilmenite. Power consumption averaged 1,400 kv.-hr. per ton of ilmenite, at a feed rate of 400 to 500 pounds per hour, when operating at an electrical energy input of 290 to 370 kilowatts. The optimum operating voltage appeared to be 110 volts, phase-to-phase. Graphite electrode consumption averaged 15.6 pounds per ton of ilmenite smelted. Magnesite furnace refractory withstood the corrosive action of the hot metal and slag better than carbon refractory.

This report summarizes the first phase of studies to determine the design and behavior of an unsupported roof in an experimental room in limestone. The selection of a roof horizon and the design of the room were results of an investigation of the geology of the formation, the physical properties of samples from the proposed roof, and calculations from the theory of gravity-loaded beams. The design of the opening, some physical properties of the roof in place, and the behavior of the roof were checked by tests in a full-scale experimental room. The room was instrumented to measure roof deflection, separations in the roof strata, and incipient failure. The dimensions of the room before instrumentation was installed were 10 by 100 feet; the room was widened in successive increments to 40 by 100 feet. Between widening operations periods up to 6 months were allowed to provide a time test of the roof spans. The results of the measurements of deflection and separations showed that the lowest 6-inch layer in the roof became detached as the room was widened. This layer was eventually removed after standing without failure for about 4 months at room dimensions of 40 by 100 feet.

"A fire hazard exists in nearly all mines. Progressive mining companies recognize this danger and take all possible precautions to prevent any conflagrations, but in spite of such safety measures, mine fires do occasionally occur and endanger life and property. In order to be prepared for such an emergency, miners are trained in the use of self-contained breathing apparatus and the necessary fire-fighting equipment is kept on hand. Men trained to wear breathing apparatus can penetrate workings full of poisonous fumes, but in order to successfully combat fumes or to rescue miners, the rescue crews must be trained in fire-fighting operations and know how to proceed with a minimum loss of time when they get to the scene of action.In order to perfect fire-fighting plans and to train men of the Globe-Miami district under conditions approximating those found at an actual mine fire, mine-reseue maneuvers were held at Globe, Arizona, on October 17-20, inclusive. The work was done under the direction of Orr Woodburn, director, and his associates of the Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First Aid Association. He was assisted by Albert Tallon, safety engineer, and Herbert Finnegan of the Old Dominion Co.; Herbert Hodson, safety engineer for the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.; A. 3. Martinson and J. M. Harrington of Car One, and F. D. Gardner of the Southwest Station, Bureau of Mines. Invitations were issued to mining men likely to be interested and representatives of mining companies from other districts were present and observed the work.The Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First Aid Association is maintained by the mining companies in the district and each company contributes to the organization's support in proportion to the total number of men on the pay roll. A central station*, between Globe and Miami, has been established and a truck with 10 sets of 2-hour self-contained breathing apparatus and the necessary accessories is always in readiness to respond to a call to any of the mines in the district. Besides being in readiness for emergency work, the station employees train men in the use of mine-rescue apparatus and in first-aid to the injured at the mines of the association. The Globe-Miami Mine Rescue organization has been developed to high point of, efficiency under Mr. Woodburn's direction and is one of the best in the country. The three largest mines of the district such maintain a crew of 15 men trained in the use of breathing apparatus, and other mines keep crews of 5 men each."

The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the “bigger-the-better” design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.

How It Works: The inspection port screw thread has a large pitch, which allows the port cover to be rotated from fully closed 10 fully open, in less than one revolution. See Figure 1. When the cover is screwed back in. it be-gins engagement within one eighth turn because the screw design has eight separate threads. To prevent Its unauthorized opening, the port cover has a bolt guarded by ears which accept a padlock. The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional uranium ore-processing steps to confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive wastes. A potential method of minimizing pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226, in uranium mill waste streams is to reuse the waste solutions within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Kerr-McGee Shiprock-type process was investigated in the laboratory. The Shiprock mill employs a two-stage acid-leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and organophosphorus solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium and vanadium from solution. The simulated use of barren raffinate instead of fresh water in the mill circuit was carried through a laboratory campaign of 28 interlocked leaching, washing, and solvent extraction cycles. About 99 percent of the uranium and 91 percent of the vanadium were dissolved from the are, Washing efficiency in the thickener circuit averaged about 99.5 percent when the pulp was washed with enough barren raffinate and makeup water to recover 2.5 tons of pregnant solution per ton of ore. The only solution discarded was that contained in the washed and thickened leach residue. A buildup of salts due to recycling of solutions did not adversely affect operation of the washing circuit.

Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of aflame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety laps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

The Bureau of Mines studied two types of approved coal mine dust personal samplers to determine the effect of decreasing the amplitude of airflow velocity fluctuations on cyclone performance. Results indicate that more dust is collected when pulsation free flow is used. Velocity fluctuations were reduced by means of a pulsation damper; damper efficiency of about 85 percent was needed to reduce the fluctuations to an acceptable level. The data were obtained employing both pulsating and non-pulsating flow. A comparison was made of (1) the masses of respirable coal dust as determined by weighing and of (2) the particle size distributions as determined by an electronic counter. An empirical relationship is given between the ratio of masses collected using pulsating and nonpulsating flow (M') and the ratio of the maximum air velocity to the minimum air velocity (V') as measured in the cyclone entrance channel.

Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

The production of beryllium metal and its alloys is one of the most difficult tasks in metallurgy. In this report we shall examine the progress made in this work- in the last 15 years; taking into account the outstanding publications, including; those of the patent literature, and the information obtained during our 20 years? experience with this metal. The difficulties experienced' in producing elementary beryllium derive from the physical nature as well as from the chemical behavior of the metal and its compounds. Its oxygen affinity is about the same as that of calcium and a little higher than that of magnesium. Its chlorine affinity is much lower than that of magnesium, about equal that, of manganese, and little higher than that of aluminum. The sulfur and nitrogen affinity is probably almost the same as that of calcium for these elements, and beryllium carbide is probably more stable than aluminum carbide, A14C3. The intermetallic affinity of beryllium may be given in descending order, as follows: Nickel - copper - iron. It forms eutectics with -aluminum and silicon as well as with silver. It does not alloy with magnesium and only partly with calcium. Its oxide melts at 2,570° C., but CaO and BaO form readily fusible eutectics with BeO(65).3/ No igneous solvents are known for BeO, which behaves id this regard like Mgo. The beryllium silicate is a strong compound, the aluminete much less so; however, CaO easily displaces Be in the heated mixtures. The Anhydrous chloride hydrolyzes, and it cannot be made from aqueous liquors. It sublimes at 488° C, and melts at 405° C., The fluoride, which, is very Soluble in water, hydrolyzes also, but a kind of oxyfluoride of the approximate formula 2 BeO?5 BeF2 can be made from solutions by dessication. The fluoride melts at 800° C, and boils above 1,100° C. It forms very stable double fluorides with alkalifluorides, which have very low melting points and are fairly soluble in water. They are more stable than the analogous fluosilicates and the sodium fluoaluminate cryolite.

This Bureau of Mines investigation determined the effects of so-called annealing at high temperatures on radon-222 emanation from domestic uranium ores. Concurrently, a method was developed for closely estimating the emanation coefficients of hot samples from measurements of their gamma activity after cooling. Emanation coefficients of 102 samples from 14 domestic areas of past, present, and possible future uranium production were investigated using modifications of the closed-can, gamma-only assay method at and after cooling from 100° to 1,000° C. True annealing probably does not occur below 500° C. In limited investigations at 500° C and above, effects of annealing are masked by the effects of other parameters. Emanation is commonly less at one or more of the steps investigated in the 100° to 500° C range than before heating. This decrease is tentatively attributed to water loss at temperatures dependent upon the minerals present. The average sample emanates least at 300° C; emanation increases with higher temperatures to at least 900° C. Emanation decreases sharply on cooling, but it is partially restored by prolonged exposure to the atmosphere at room temperature. Higher than average emanation of coffinite ores at 500° C and above may be related to destruction of the coffinite crystal structure.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

"Abstract. Based on the premise that understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal will lead to reducing coal dust problems in mines, a thorough study of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal was undertaken. Two approaches were considered in an attempt to understand and quantify the fracture process as it relates to fine fragment formation.In one approach, theoretical models are used which describe the size of the fracture process zone which may relate to the amount of structural damage and fine fragment formation on the new crack surface. The other approach is based on the relationship between crack tip stress intensity and new surface appearance for mixed mode crack propagation. Preliminary observations with a scanning electron microscope support the premise that fine fragment formation is related to fracture surface appearance and fracture initiation conditions.An experimental program designed to supply the input parameters for these approaches is presently underway. The experimentation features mixed mode fracture toughness testing, using a special mixed mode testing rig, and fracture velocity measurements with a crack propagation gage. The interpretation of this data via the approaches discussed will provide further understanding of the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal."

Bureau of Mines studies were made on the sensitivity of several ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures to bullet impact. The experimental work was done with one military rifle and two high-velocity sporting rifles with a variety of ammunition. For the three rifles used, the order of efficiency in initiating detonation in AN-FO mixtures was 220 Swift >300 Weatherby Magnum >30-&apos;06. The velocity of the bullet was found to be a decisive factor in the initiation. The sensitivity of various materials studied increased as follows: Clay-coated prills with 4 percent oil <fresh surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil <surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil and aged 270 days <crushed prills with 6 percent oil <very low-density, surfactant-coated prills (micronized), with 4 percent oil.
