The Bureau of Mines investigated the sequence of principal chemical reactions taking place during the roasting of covellite (CuS). Practically all covellite is converted to digenite (Cul.SS) before oxidation to Cu20 begins. Part of the Cu2O is then converted to CuO, which in turn forms CuS04 through CuO?CuS04 as an intermediary. CuS04 and CuO'CuS04 decompose at 600° to 700° C to yield CuO and S03 (g) as final products. An overall mechanism is proposed for chemical reactions occurring at different interfaces of partially oxidized CuS pellets.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was blown with oxygen-enriched blast in combination with natural gas injected at the tuyeres. The air blast was augmented with oxygen to form an enriched blast containing 24,8 pct oxygen, and tests were run at natural gas injection rates of 4.5, 6.0, and 8.3 pct of the air blast. Similar enrichment to 26.8 pct oxygen was tested at natural gas rates of 7.2, 9.1, and 11,0 pct of the air blast. At intermediate proportions of natural gas to oxygen, (1) the fuel rate and the replacement ratio of coke by natural gas were unaffected by oxygen injections and (2) the productivity increased about 4 pct for each I pct oxygen added to the blast. The higher proportions of natural gas to oxygen were less efficient; in return for a lower coke rate, the fuel rate increased and productivity declined. A deficiency in reducing gas imposed a limit upon lower than normal proportions of natural gas to oxygen. Beyond this limit the formation of reducing gas was insufficient to support the rate of metal production. When this condition was encountered, the coke rate requirement for specification iron was abnormally high and production fell off badly. Adiabatic flame temperature is discussed as a means for proportioning oxygen and natural gas additions.

"INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. There are no reliable records of production or value of minerals produced.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the most effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they take the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines investigated the ZnO-Fe2O3-Fe3O4 system at 1,000°, 1,300°, and 1,400° C, with oxygen pressures between 1.0 and lx10-4 atmospheres. The results, divided into the thermodynamic properties as related to the spinel structure, and the thermodynamic properties as related to zinc concentrate roasting, were used to calculate the activities of ZnO, Fe2O4, and Fe3O4 within the spinel solid solution region of the ternary system, and the pseudo-binary activities of ZnFe2O4 and Fe304. The activities of both systems show large positive deviations from Raoult's Law, especially at high Fe3O4 concentrations. The free energies, the enthalpies, and the entropies of mixing for the binary system were calculated from the binary activities, and the entropies of mixing were compared with two statistical models, one representing an ideal solution, and one representing the mixing of a normal with an inverse spinel. The binary entropy of mixing seemed to be better represented by the latter statistical model, indicating that the tetrahedral and octahedral cations of the reactants tend to remain in the product, even at the high temperatures of the study. This comparison also indicated that the cations of the components are the major contributing factors to the thermodynamic properties.

The Bureau of Mines has developed MULSIM/BM, an improved computer program using the boundary-element approach for geomechanical analysis of mine plans in single or multiple coal seams. This Information Circular presents the improved features of the MULSIN/BM program. The four major improvements are the following: (1) Ability to specify up to 26 material property sets. (2) A new material model capability for gob and inserted materials such as packwalls or cribs. (3) Ability to model a large area with a grid of undivided blocks and to subdivide only a specified fine-mesh portion of these blocks into elements. (4) Specification of extraction ratios for the undivided blocks. In addition, an interactive graphics mesh generator program was written to accompany MULSIM/BM. A complete user's guide and program listings are included within the appendixes. The MULSIM/BM and mesh generator programs are available on tape from the National Technical Information Service.3

Published experimental coke data from a pilot plant slot-type oven were examined by statistical regression analysis. Quantitative relationships were found to exist between the coking rate, bulk density, and fine grinding of the coal, sole-oven expansion, volatile matter, moisture, ash, and carbon con-tent of the coal and coke parameters indicative of size and strength. Regression equations developed from coke data were shown to yield computed values that were in good agreement with experimental results for 11 coke properties. Prediction equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of data. Present results indicate that the variables cited undergo much interaction and the sum of these interactions determines coke size and strength.

Energies of combustion of vanadium nitride (VN) and vanadium carbide (VC) were measured. Correcting to vanadium tetroxide (V204) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15=-118,700±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-240,270±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. With vanadium pentoxide (V205) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15= -133.440±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-255,020±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Combining these results with vanadium oxide data, the heats of formation obtained were ?298.15=-51,880±200 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-24,350±400 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Heats and free energies of formation of vanadium nitride and carbide were calculated to 2,000° K.

Previously existing heat-of-formation values for the oxides of vanadium were rudimentary. They were subject to uncertainties of 1 to 5 kilocalories per gram-atom of contained oxygen. This fact has been the only adverse influence on the accuracy of thermodynamic calculations involving these substances, as the requisite entropy and high-temperature heat-content data are known with reasonable accuracy. This report presents new heat-of-formation data for four oxides of vanadium (VO, V203, V02, and V205), obtained by combustion calorimetry. It is believed that the uncertainties have been reduced to 0.1 to 0.3 kilocalorie per gram-atom of contained oxygen. The new heat-of-formation data were combined with existing entropy and high-temperature heat-content values to obtain free energies of formation of the four oxides at temperatures up to 2,000° K.

The average gravity of the total crude petroleum produced in the United States during; the year 1927 was 32.2° A. P. I., or 0.864 in terms of specific gravity. A similar study, made by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1921, gave the average gravity at that time as 32.0.° To one who is accustomed to thinking of crude petroleum in terms of Oklahoma-Kansas and North Texas trades it may be surprising that the average gravity for the entire country is no higher than 32.20. The chief reason for this apparent discrepancy lies mainly in California production, which in 1927 amounted to over 25 per cent of the total, but which had an average gravity of only 24.10. A factor of less importance was Arkansas, which, though on the decline as a producing State, exerted a material effect by reason of its average gravity of 21.6°, the lowest for any State. In view of the heavy production of light crude in the Seminole area of Oklahoma during 1927, it would appear that the average gravity should have shown more than a 0.2 per cent gain over 1921. That this did not occur was due to the fact that in the interim between 1921 and 1927 important heavy oil discoveries were redo, notably the Smackover field of Arkansas.

A naphtha obtained by destructive, recycle hydrogenation of crude shale oil, produced by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale, was found by the Bureau of Mines to contain 49.1 percent paraffins, 20.3 percent cycloparaffins, 7.8 percent olefins, and 22.8 percent aromatics. The naphtha contained only minor amounts of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds. Compounds containing less than 5 carbon-atoms per molecule were removed by distillation before analysis. The paraffins where predominantly straight-chain compounds; n-Hexane was present in the largest quantity, and the other straight-chain paraffins decreased in amount as the molecular weight increased. The cycloparaffins, which contained both cyclopentanes and cyclohexanes, were evenly distributed throughout the boiling range. Although the naphtha had been produced by hydrogenation, it contained a small quantity of olefins. Straight-chain olefins with a terminal double bond comprised about two-thirds of these compounds. Among olefins with an internal double bond, those having trans configuration were present in three times the quantity of those in the cis form. In the aromatics all but one of the alkylbenzenes having nine or less carbon-atoms per molecule were identified; toluene was present in the greatest quantity. Only a few of the higher molecular-weight homologs were identified. The composition of the naphtha was computed from analyses of 105 narrow¬boiling distillation fractions. Volume, density, refractive indices, bromine number, and an ultraviolet spectrum were determined on each fraction. From these data the hydrocarbon-group composition of each fraction was estimated. A silica gel adsorption analysis was used to check the values of nearly one-third of the fraction calculated from physical-property data. Mass and infrared spectra were obtained on some fractions for identifying individual compounds or types of compounds, such as terminal olefins.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous tests to remove traces of dissolved molybdenum from water simulating waste discharged from a molybdenum concentrator, Molybdenum concentrations, initially ranging from 2 to 10 ppm, were decreased to 0.5 ppm or less by coprecipitation of the molybdenum with freshly precipitated ferric hydroxide" The precipitate was separated as a froth by dissolved-air flotation for subsequent disposal. Although the treated water met current environmental standards for contained molybdenum, contained particulate iron might have to be removed by filtration for the water to be acceptable. Estimated costs for treating concentrator effluent water were 55 cents, 57 cents, and 64 cents per 1,000 gal at initial molybdenum concentrations of 2, 4, and 10 ppm, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines instrumented an operating stope in a deep vein mine to determine the amount of wall closure and the magnitude of loads imposed on a backfilled stope. Hydraulic pressure cells used to monitor pressures in the fill) with bolt closure points to measure vein-wall movement and the procedure for their installation) are described) and the results of the laboratory calibration analysis of the reliability of these cells are given. An attempt to monitor density and moisture changes in the backfill with a nuclear density-moisture device was only partly successful) owing to either deformation of access tubing or relative displacements of the vertical vein walls relative to the emplaced tubes. Data from the instrumentation indicate vein-wall closure in excess of 20 inches and pressures within the fill approaching 600 psi. Analysis) incorporating field data with results of laboratory tests of the compressibility of timber and tests defining the constrained moduli of the fill) points out the limited restraint to vein closure offered by timber sets. Ground movement induced by mining activity could be more effectively con-trolled by the use of densely compacted backfill.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

This report contains a cost estimate of the Bureau of Mines process for dewatering Alaskan placer effluent streams with polyethylene oxide (PEO). In this process effluent slurry is withdrawn from the placer plant pond system after a primary settling stage. A dilute PEO solution is injected into the slurry line to flocculate the fine, suspended solids. The flocculated solids are dewatered on a stationary screen. Clarified water is returned to the placer operation or discharged, while the 35 percent solids waste is pumped back into the mine cut. Cost estimates are presented for dewatering plants processing 1,000 gallons per minute of effluent slurry at three representative turbidity levels. Both the placer and the dewatering plants operate on the same 1-shift-per-day, 6-day-per-week schedule for the 100-day Alaskan operating season. Estimated fixed capital costs for these plants processing placer with effluent turbidities of 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) are approximately $29,000, $31,000, and $34,000, respectively, on a fourth quarter 1986 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.34, $0.37, and $0.40 per thousand gallons of effluent slurry.

"INTRODUCTION The surface areas of the finest fractions of a pulverized material are disproportionately larger than their weights. For instance, Pesrott and Kinney 3/ showed that, in a sample of minus 200-mesh coal, particles that are about 2 microns in diameter represent 15 percent of the entire surface area but only 1.5 percent of the total weight. Because the sur- face area is the dominating factor in the behavior of finely divided materials in many practical processes, the role of the finest particles is of great importance. The oxidation and combustion of pulverized coal, both in the dry form and in suspension in oils, and the hydrogenation to fluid hydrocarbons of mixtures of pulverized coal and heavy oil are reactions in which the surface area of the coal particles has considerable influence. This investigation of the size distribution of fine coal particles was conducted with the hope that such processes would thereby be better understood. The results should also be of value in the study of the crushing and fracture of coal."

Thermodynamic calculations for antimony and its compounds have been hampered by the lack of adequate basic thermal data; much work rains even to fill the more important gaps. This paper supplies heat and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K, for the sesquioxide and tetroxide, based upon new measurements conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were obtained by combustion (bomb) calorimetry, and the free energies of formation were obtained by combination of heat and entropy data. The new values are believed to substantially improve the accuracy of thermodynsunic considerations involving these oxides.

For electric utilities serving the aluminum smelter industry in the United States, sulfur oxide (SOx) abatement legislation could bring about increases in the costs of generating electricity. This paper documents the method and assumptions used in estimating these increases, and the contains the results of the estimation. 1.2 SMELTER INFORMATION The smelters used in this study were identified by the Bureau of Mines (BOM) and are listed in Table 1.1. Also included in Table 1.1 are the electric utilities that serve these smelters. Compliance costs were estimated for these utilities. Some of the utilities are unique in the way that the information is handled or in the way the utility is operated; these are discussed below. 1.2.1 Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops, Data for Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops were gathered by George Mason University (GMU) students for BON and are included in this study.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, did a linear analysis for a new underground coal mine in Grant County, WV, through the interpretation of LANDSAT imagery and high-altitude, color-infrared aerial photography, to identify areas of potentially unstable roof in advance of mining. The Bureau of Mines included this mine in its ongoing study of the correlation between geologic features and linears. Three years after the analysis, after mining had progressed through the plotted linears, a cooperative Bureau-MSHA study evaluated the effectiveness of the linear plot in predicting areas of unstable roof and defined the geology associated with the linears. Adverse roof conditions at this mine include roof falls, potted-out roof, water inflow, and local areas requiring supplemental support. At the time of this study, 34 pct of the mine workings were within 200 ft of a plotted linear. Fifty percent of the adverse roof area in the mine occurred within this area. The primary geologic anomaly associated with the linears is an increased frequency of jointing. The majority of the plotted linears coincide with the prominent joint orientations. Additional features observed in the linear zones include roof rolls and a sandstone channel that cuts into the coal seam.

The Bureau of Mines is currently engaged in a continuing investigation of the thermodynamic properties of certain inorganic compounds. As a part of this investigation, the heat contents of bismuth and cerous chlorides were measured throughout the temperature ranges of 370° to 630° K. and 370° to 1,200° K., respectively. Equations representing heat contents as a function of temperature were derived from the data by the method of least squares. These equations were used to calculate heat contents at selected temperature intervals ranging from the ice point to 650° K. for bismuth chloride and to 1,200° K. for cerous chloride; also, the heats of fusion of both compounds were calculated at their respective melting points. EXPERIMENTAL Materials The cerous chloride used in this investigation was supplied by the National Carbon Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A chemical analysis indicated Ce 56.57 percent and Cl 43.39 percent. No attempt was made to purify the compound or identify impurities since the analysis showed only about 0.04 percent total impurities. Reagent grade bismuth chloride was used without additional purification.
