[Surveys of the manganese situation conducted by the Geological Survey any other agencies have definitely established the, fact that the tonnage of high-grade manganese or in the United States is relatively small. It is therefore obvious that large-scale production of manganese is possible only through beneficiation of low-grade material. Deposits of low-grade manganese ore are being examined by engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines to determine their size and possibilities as sources of manganese on a tonnage basis. The Metallurgical Division of the Bureau is developing and perfecting beneficiation processes with the objective of utilizing such low-grade ores. Microscopic study of these ores represents one phase of the research.]

The Bureau of Mines has determined the heat capacity and enthalpy values for beryllium sulfate (BeS04) throughout the temperature ranges of 10° to 300° K in an adiabatic calorimeter, and 350° to 860° K in a Bunsen-type ice calorimter, The heat-capacity data were extrapolated to 0° K, and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were reported at 10-degree intervals between 0° and 300° K. The method of least squares was used to fit the enthalpy data with an algebraic equation. The equation also was used to calculate values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function at 50-degree intervals between 300° and 900° K.

The specific conductance of solutions of sodium hydroxide and of sodium aluminate was directly proportional to the temperature. The specific conductance of sodium aluminate solutions with identical sodium ion concentration and at constant temperature decreased with increase in aluminum concentration. The aluminate ion population in solution was shown to consist of a mixture of monovalent and polyvalent ions. Aluminate ions did not influence the temperature dependence of pH in caustic solutions containing sodium aluminate. The density and viscosity of a solution was inversely proportional to the temperature and directly proportional to the concentrations of sodium and aluminate ions.

"INTRODUCTION The Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cooperating with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers, has made a series of investigations of the washability of coal from commercially important bens of Alabama. The results of 13 investigations pertaining to the Mary Lee, Clark, Black Creek, Jefferson, Pratt, Corona, Carter Brookwood, Blue Creek, Thompson, and Woodstock beds have been published. 4/ This report, the fourteenth of the series, deals with run-of-mine coal from the Henry Ellen bed at the Acmar No. 5 mine of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.The Acmar mine is 1/2 mile west of Acmar, Saint Clair County, in the northern part of the Cahaba field. Present production at the mine is about 800 tons per day, all of which, accept the lump coal, is treated in jigs. The washability data were obtained by means of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests. There are included, also, tests showing the extent of liberation of impurities by recrushing the coarser sizes of coal from the top bench and tests showing the flakiness in selected sizes.SAMPLING AT THE MINEThe Henry Ellen bed at Acmar consists of two benches separated by a shale parting. At the point of sampling the top bench was 6 feet 3 inches thick and contained a 1-inch and a 1 1/2-inch band of bone. The bottom bench was 5 feet thick and was separated from the top bench by 20 inches of shale. In taking the samples for the washability study the working face was squared up, and a representative 2-ton section was out from each bench. The shale parting was discarded, according to usual mining practice."

THE BARRIER-PILLAR SYSTEM in the Lackawanna Basin consists of 93 barrier pillars between Archbald and Taylor, Pa. These pillars affect 48 mines, have a total length of 87 miles, and confine 21 underground pools, which contain more than 10 billion gallons of water. From an investigation of size, position, and condition of the barrier pillars, it is apparent that those concerned are uncertain, not only as to the method by which the sizes of the barrier pillars were determined but also as to the stability of those that may be expected to act as dams. Where a barrier pillar must act as a dam, its failure may result in loss of life, the mine, or both; it would be far better had it not existed and thereby given a false sense of security.

Each year hundreds of mineral specimens and numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic substances are received by the Bureau of Mines. In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.

This paper on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils from California fields is one of a series of reports on the oil-producing districts of the United States. The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of 16 California crude oils. Analyses of other oil from California have been published in Reports of Investigations 25954/, 26085/, 28466/, and 30747/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of the samples vas facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

The Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of :,!in-s, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, has completed a detailed investigation-of the physical and chemical properties of western cokes made or used in the Pacific Northwest, as evaluated by standard methods./ One of the properties determined, to which more or less importance has been attached, was reactivity5/ or combustibility. As no standardized procedure is available, it was necessary to develop a workable method for evaluating this property. The combustibility of coke is usually measured by the formation of carbon dioxide with time at a particular temperature or by the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Analysis of the resulting gases commonly is required to evaluate the result. The method described in this paper is simple and direct in that the sample of coke or other carbonaceous material is weighed as it burns; the loss in weight and time is indicated by a balance and clock arrangement. Gas analyses are not required. Methods similar in principle have been used by Tu, Davis, and Hottel6/ and by Oshima and Fukuda7/ for determining the combustion rate of carbon and for studying the effect of ash on combustion characteristics. To decrease reliance on foreign sources for the strategic and critical metals gallium and germanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines identified and developed processing technology for two domestic sources of these metals: a Tennessee zinc residue and a Utah ore. Sulfuric acid (H2S04) solutions were used to solubilize gallium and germanium in both sources. Statistically designed experiments showed that the most important parameter for high metal extraction from zinc residue was the H2S04 concentration. At a concentration of 2.9M H2S04, 95 pct of the gallium was extracted, and at a concentration of 0.6M H2S04, 73 pct of the germanium was extracted. Controlled H2S04 concentration was also the key for high metal extractions (97 pct Ga, 87 pct Ge) from the Utah ore. Such control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Testing showed that the insoluble germanium in both the residue and ore was tied up with silica. Several methods for overcoming this problem are given. To recover gallium and germanium from the leach solutions, the solvent extractants octylphenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) (for gallium) and LIX 63-OPAP (for germanium) were identified. These extractants were tested in separate, continuous, solvent-extraction circuits yielding a gallium recovery of 94 pct and a germanium recovery of more than 90 pct.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. Dean, formerly assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Knickerbocker, formerly chief, metallurgical branch, as part of a long-range program involving the development, manufacture, and use of manganese from domestic ores. An apparatus has been developed for determining the helium content of gases containing 40 percent or more helium . It utilizes activated coconut charcoal at liquid nitrogen temperatures to adsorb constituents other than helium in the mixture . Series of analyses have been run where the mean deviation was less than 0.05 percent helium . Twenty or more analyses can be made in an 8- hour day .

This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of load cells for measuring compressive loads in timber and lock-bolt support systems commonly used in. coal; metal, and nonmetal mines Design and evaluation is covered in detail to insure a reliable, accurate, and practical instrumentation scheme. The load cells are relatively inexpensive and adaptable to various size support systems. User-oriented procedures are emphasized, and design equations were reduced to a series of nomographs. Laboratory evaluation, destructive testing, environmental testing, and tests to determine the effect of extraneous loads were conducted. Field performance was evaluated in conjunction with ongoing Bureau projects at a metal mine in North Idaho and a coal mine in Utah. Load cells utilizing a titanium alloy as the cell body and weldable strain gages as the strain-sensing components satisfied the basic design and performance criteria, and with minor design modifications, the load cells can be adapted to many mining applications.

The Bureau of Mines made laboratory-scale experiments to examine the technical possibilities of reclaiming manganese from slags produced by oxygen lancing of high-manganese pig iron. Ferromanganese was added to molten pig iron to yield a 4-to 5-percent manganese hot metal, which simulated a product obtainable from the blast furnace. This was injected with oxygen to reduce the metal to 1 percent or less manganese and form a slag containing about 40 percent manganese. The molten slag was water-quenched, treated with H2SO4) roasted at 660° C, and water-leached to give soluble manganese and iron sulfates. The sulfates were precipitated as hydroxides, converted to the oxide form, and smelted to produce a standard ferromanganese containing 74.6 percent Mn and 0.01 percent P. As an alternate method of manganese recovery, a manganese cell feed was prepared from the leach solutions and electrolytic manganese was produced. Direct smelting of the high-manganese slag resulted in 74.2 ferromanganese meeting ASTM specifications except for phosphorus content. The high phosphorus content of the metal and high slag-to-metal ratio obtained made this approach unattractive.

The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

As part of its program to lessen dependence on foreign bauxite as the Nation's primary source of cell-grade alumina, the Bureau of Mines is investigating sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching procedures for the recovery of alumina from domestic aluminous materials. The successful application of a H2S04 leaching process depends on the recovery of the aluminum values in an easily washed and filtered form, containing a minimum of water to be driven off in the subsequent calcination step. This goal was met by the high-temperature hydrolysis of simulated aluminum sulfate [A12(S04)3] leach liquor. Crystalline, insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate [A1(OH)S04], which had a water-to-alumina mole ratio of 1:1, was produced. Eighty-six percent of a solution containing 127 g of A12(S04)3 per liter and 76 pct of a solution containing 336 g of A12(S04)3 per liter were hydrolyzed to insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate by autoclaving for 1 hr at 320° C and rapidly quenching to room temperature. Higher operating temperatures were precluded by corrosion of the autoclave. The yield of aluminum in the hydrolysis product increased with increasing hydrolysis temperature and decreasing A12(S04)3 concentration.

"Prewar Conditions:Metallic magnesium may be considered a war metal, but a war metal with a future, so far as the industry in the United States is concerned. Its production in the United States prior to 1915, on a commercial scale, was negligible, but imports prior to that year may be taken as a gaze of the demand for the metal. Unfortunately, magnesium was not listed separately by the Department of Commerce prior to the war, among the importations, but was included with other metals, as follows: ""Barium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, and alloys of which said metals are the component materials of chief value."" However, the imports of metals enumerated other than magnesium were probably small, so that the importations under the above caption may be considered chiefly metallic magnesium in one form or another and, therefore, is an approximate gage of the demand for the metal in the United States. These imports were as follows:These figures are so close that they give a good idea of the figures for the respective calendar years.Of this prewar use, it has been estimated that about 85 per cent was used annually and in approximately equal quantities in the production of (1) flash-light powder, (2) fire works, (3) aluminum casting work, and (4) nickel and nickel-copper alleys, such as monel metal, etc. The re¬maining 15 per cent was employed for general uses, such as deoxiding brass and other copper alloys in foundry work, and to a small extent in laboratory and research work."

"INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."
