The character of phosphorous-bearing minerals in the Birmingham red Iron ores and iron-bearing minerals in the Eufaula bauxite deposits in Alabama has been Intensively studied by petrographic, ore microscopic, luminescent microscopic, scanning electron microscopic, electron microprobe, and x-ray diffraction techniques. A total of 15 types of phosphorous-bearing mineral grains have been recognized in Birmingham iron ores by their characteristic sizes, shapes, and distributions. Size measurements, modal analyses, and texture analyses have permitted an estimate of potential liberation of phosphorous from the iron ores by beneficiation to be 27% In areas of previous mining and 60% in areas of current iron reserves. Fine grinding, selective flocculation, and flotation may constitute the best beneficiation technique for future research. Hematite and goethite are the most important iron minerals in Eufaula ferruginous bauxites, but pyrite, marcasite, and siderite are Important iron minerals in some varieties of ferruginous bauxite, and lepidocrocite and ilmenite occur locally in minor quantities. Although simple screening will remove the coarsest iron-bearing grains, research on the utilization of high gradient magnetic separation to reduce the amounts of iron-bearing grains is recommended.

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Many of the mines were developed.A preliminary examination of the Sultan mine was made in January 1945 by the author, who recommended investigation by drifting and crosscutting. The Bureau conducted a project at the mine from April to June 1946. Claims investigated are in sec. 20, T. 25 S., R. 58E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in southern Clark County, Nev., about 7 miles southwest of Good-springs.The Sultan mine has been an intermittent producer of zinc-lead-silver ore since 1910. During World War II, ore was shipped to the Government stock pile at Jean, Nev., and to the International Smelting& Refining Co.'s smelter near Salt Lake City, Utah. Throughout the past year, ore has been milled and the concentrates have been shipped to the smelter."

Previous research on continuous mining operations has shown that significant interactions exist between dust control parameter application and the resulting respirable dust levels, but simply increasing the level of the controls does not guarantee a reduction in respirable dust levels. Full-scale laboratory tests are being conducted to provide information to longwall operators which would assist them in selecting control parameters that would reduce dust levels for mine-specific conditions. The interactions between face air velocity, shearer water quantity, drum water spray pressure, external water spray pressure, and spray system design were evaluated in a simulated 2.13. m (7-ft) coal seam for two cutting directions. Locations around and downwind of the shearer were monitored to evaluate relative changes in respirable dust levels as a function of each control parameter.

This chapter describes the adverse health effects associated with exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Epidemiological studies of underground and surface coal miners in the United States and other countries are discussed. Also discussed are animal studies that add to our understanding of particle deposition and retention in the lungs and associated disease responses. This chapter emphasizes studies that (1) were performed since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 [P.L. 91- 173], (2) used standardized methods of exposure monitoring and disease classification, and (3) investigated exposure-response relationships between respirable coal mine dust exposure and disease. Several published review articles contain further discussion of health effects studies of coal miners [Attfield and Wagner 1992b; Petsonk and Attfield 1994; Cotes and Steel 1987; Merchant et al. 1986; Morgan and Lapp 1976; Morgan 1975].

The Thousand Lakes Wilderness has no known economically significant mineral resources. However, the geologic setting of the Wilderness indicates a potential for the discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Thousand Lakes Wilderness occupies 16,335 acres (6,611 ha) in eastern Shasta County, California. A mineral resource study of the area was authorized by the Wilderness Act of 1964 (Public Law 88-577). Mining records and published information were examined, and field investigations conducted in 1979. The Wilderness is about 50 miles (80 km) east of Redding and 12 miles (19 km) south of Burney, California. It lies in the Cascade Range of California. Relief is more than 3,000 feet (910 m); elevation is greatest at the summit of Crater Peak, 8,677 feet (2,645 m).

Seven coal-related waste samples (mining, cleaning, and gasification) were characterized chemically and mineralogically. Laboratory extracts of each sample, using a variety of different extraction methods, were used in both acute and chronic bioassays. A coal slurry sample (coarse fraction) and two coal cleaning refuse samples were chemically and mineralogically similar, and generated acidic water-waste systems, both in the laboratory and in the field. Acidic laboratory extracts and field samples of acid mine drainage in the area where the solid samples were collected, tended to be in equilibrium with some type of CaSO4 phase and with maghemite. The chemical composition of the extracts was sensitive to the method used to generate the extracts, but generally had the same prevalent chemical character as the field samples. The acidic wastes contain appreciable quantities of soluble Al, Mn, Ni, SO4, and Zn as indicated by both laboratory extraction and field data. Long-term extractions suggest that some constituents (Al, Fe, SO4) continued to be released by the acidic wastes after 22 weeks with no apparent associated change in pH. Two mine spoil samples, essentially shale, tended to generate water-waste systems that were neutral in pH and consequently released lower quantities tit potential pollutants than the acid wastes. The gasification residue was compositionally similar to coal-fired power plant slag and fly ash and generated moderately alkaline extracts with low concentration of soluble potentially toxic constituents. All of the solid wastes contained a variety of organic compounds, many of which are on the EPA Priority Pollutant List. However, these compounds were essentially insoluble in aqueous media. Each extract was tested for acute toxicity with tour species of freshwater aquatic organisms; green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), a crustacean (Daphnia magna), and a snail (Physa anatina). The extracts of the two mine spoil samples and of the gasification residue were not toxic to any of the organisms while the extracts from the acidic refuse and slurry samples were acutely toxic to all of the organisms. For all cases, pH was significantly correlated to mortality while Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn were significantly correlated to mortality in specific instances. Data from 96-hour LC-50 determinations showed that dilutions up to 1:1000 were necessary to eliminate mortality. The most toxic extracts were those with the lowest pH which necessitated the largest amounts of dilution to eliminate mortality. Chronic bioassays with the same test organisms were investigated with leachate samples from a relatively unweathered refuse sample and an older, more weathered refuse sample. The unweathered refuse sample generated a leachate that was acutely toxic while the leachate from the weathered refuse sample was not acutely toxic. No detrimental chronic effects were noted in organisms exposed to dilutions of the non-toxic leachate while low concentrations of the acutely toxic leachate produced lower hatchability for the Lepomis cyanellus and Pimephales promelas eggs, increased mortality with chronic exposure for Lepomis cyanellus, Daphnia, Physa, and reduced weight gain for Physa. Dilutions of a toxic, high-Fe leachate resulted in the precipitation of ferric hydroxide that was implicated as the major causative factor accounting for the physical and physiological toxic effects exhibited by all of the test organisms in these acutely sublethal concentrations. The toxicity of this leachate demonstrates the potential effects that these types of wastes can have on the aquatic ecosystem if they enter a receiving water in a natural setting.

Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .

"INTRODUCTION An extensive test program is in progress by the Bureau of Mines to determine ways and means of recovering ferromanganese-grade ore 6/ from the wide-spread domestic manganese and manganiforous iron deposits. Samples for testing were received from the Interstate Manganese Co. in northeastern Tennessee, 11 miles west of Mountain City and 10 miles southwest of Damascus Va. The ore deposit occurs in the residual material of the Shady dolomite 7/ as an unconsolidated mixture of hard and soft manganese oxides and clay.Numerous tunnels and pits have developed a large reserve of ore in an area of about 15 acres. One pit 250 by 50 by 20 feet is being mined by rower shovels. The ore is hauled to a washing plant for log-washing, hand-sorting, and jigging. In overall aggregate, the world's mineral industry in 1987 experienced a more satisfactory year than in 1986, at least insofar as its performance could be assessed from traditional statistical indicators. Production, trade and consumption seemingly advanced in the case of the majority of commodities, and prices for a number of commodities advanced. It was by no means certain, however, whether 1987 investment in mineral industry ventures would top the levels of 1986, when, in the case of petroleum industry investment expenditures there had been a sharp decline, this in contrast to evidences of a slight upturn in steel industry investment. World crude mineral output value was estimated at more than $1,084 billion, and the value added by minerals industry processing of this material probably raised the total value of the industry's production from primary materials to more than $2,600 billion constant 1983 dollars. Less easy too assess was the value of mineral commodities moving in international trade, but with a resurgence in oil prices from the 1986 levels, an increase above the 1986 $500 billion mark seemed assured. There are no comprehensive aggregate statistics on mineral consumption comparable to those on production and trade, but quantitative growth recorded for most major commodities suggested a favorable trend, particularly when coupled with a general (though by no means universal) upturn in unit prices.

This report discusses some practical applications of a geotechnical investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines that can help mine operators meet revised Federal regulations in their roof control plans. The investigation, designed to characterize roof conditions near the coalbed outcrop in drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky, revealed that weathered stress-relief joints near outcrop are crucial ground control factors in the region. The joints' origin and character were determined through underground mapping of many joints in coal mine roof and detailed observations and measurement of joint trends and physical characteristics in widely separated strip mine highwalls and roadcuts. This resulted in an understanding of stress-relief-joint patterns and the effect of various rock types on the intensity of weathering in the joints. That information is used in this report to show how stress-relief joints contribute to roof failure and how, through improved roof support and mine planning, safer roof support plans can be developed.

[This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]

Whole-body vibration occurs when the body is supported on a surface which is vibrating. Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration mainly occurs in the transportation industry, but also in association with other industrial process. Epidemiological studies have frequently indicated an elevated health risk for the spine in workers exposed to whole-body vibration. With regarding to train or bus operators, a fall of drivers’ wakefulness level because of fatigue is often pointed out. This decrease in wakefulness results in an increase of the occurrence of accidents. However, a study of how whole-body vibration affects people's level of wakefulness has not been done. To test the hypothesis that exposure to whole-body vibration has a certain effects on level of wakefulness, the change of a subjective wakefulness level and changes of electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed under experimental exposure to short-term whole-body vibration. Methods Subjects are ten healthy male university students, with an average age of 20.7 ± 1.8 years old, and they are all nonsmokers. Using the equipment (CV-300, AKASHI) of whole-body vibration generator, we consider an exposure environment of actual driver work, so that set the frequency and the acceleration level as 10 Hz and 0.6ms-2 r.m.s.. The subjects were exposed to whole-body vibration in the seated position and exposure time was fixed for 12 minutes. Subjective wakefulness level was evaluated using the questionnaire of VASS (Visual Analog Sleepiness Scale) and KSS (The Kwansei Gakuin Sleepiness Scale). For the electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement, it was equipped with the electrodes based on the International ten-twenty electrode system (C3-A2, O1-A2, O2-A1). EEG activity in the alpha frequency band (8 – 12 Hz) is one of the most typical physiological indicator which represent the transition from wakefulness to sleepiness. AAT (Alpha Attenuation Test) which repeats three times each opened and closed eye for 1 minute was performed in a seating position with directions of the researcher in the beginning, in the middle and in the end of exposure to whole-body vibration. For analysis, power spectral analysis was conducted over the last 6 min of EEG, and wakefulness levels were defined as the ratio of mean alpha power during eyes closed versus eyes opened. The laboratory was kept at room temperature (21 ± 1.0 degrees C), humidity was 50 ± 5%, noise level was 63.6 dB (A) eq, and illumination 510 lx. Each experiment was started around 10:00 am to minimize the effect of biorhythm.

"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

A review and synthesis of literature pertaining to biological consequences of submarine mine-tailings disposal (STD) was conducted. STD can result in massive sea floor sediment deposition. STD may also increase suspended sediment, trace metals, and residual milling reagents in receiving waters. These perturbations, which are highly site dependent, invariably smother benthic organisms, and could potentially affect or alter fish, plankton, and benthos through acute and chronic toxicity, bioaccumulation, behavioral changes, smothering, derived secondary effects, and habitat alteration. Much of the available information concerning STD is unpublished and limited to a restricted number of sites. From this information and related research, it appears that benthic smothering is the only major consequence of a properly designed STD system. There have been cases of metal bioaccumulation due to inadequate preliminary evaluation, Also, shallow water habitat alteration has resulted from STD. Reductions in biological production are likely due to benthic smothering. The rate of ecological recovery after termination of an STD operation varies and is difficult to assess, The consequences of STD are site specific. Additional research is needed concerning possible consequences of milling reagents and the broad implications of benthic smothering. Also, methodologies are needed to allow better prediction of benthic recolonization and ecological implications of metal bioaccumulation.

The Ore Knob mine, in Ashe County, N.C., was one of the largest producers of copper in the eastern states during the 1870's. The ore occurs in a fissure vein, which strikes N. 64° E. and dips nearly vertical. The country rock is granite gneiss. Drilling indicated that the vein structure is approximately 200 feet wide and 1,500 feet long. The vein material shows evidence of replacement of the original gneiss by sulfides. Solution cavities in the vein were noted in some places. The ore minerals and pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor quantities of sphalerite. The gangue contains biotite, magnetite, albite, calcite, and many silicate minerals.

This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

In the U.S. coal mining industry, a large cohort of miners is at or nearing retirement age. As these miners retire, there will be a need to hire and train thousands of new and most likely younger workers. Moreover, a large portion of safety trainers will also require replacement due to retirement. In a speech before the U.S. House of Representatives (2004), Bruce Watzman, Vice President for Safety, Health and Human Resources for the National Mining Association said, “[W]e will need to replace a major portion, approximately 50%, of the underground coal mining workforce within the next 5–7 years.” The large influx of new mine workers, along with the deficit in safety trainers, creates the challenge to provide consistent and effective safety training. Given the expected high turnover of the mining workforce, it is very likely that incoming workers will have much less experience than those leaving the workforce. Unfortunately, inexperienced miners have been shown to incur the highest rate of injuries. The piece of machinery most associated with these injuries is the roof bolting machine, which accounts for 56% of machinery-related injuries in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a new report entitled “Roof Bolting Machine Operators Skills Training for a Walk-Thru Roof Bolter: Trainer’s Guide” (IC 9489). It is designed to help safety trainers develop struc-tured training for new operators of walk-thru bolting machines. This resource will help trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. Included in the trainer’s guide are the following tools: [ ] a six-part DVD video series, a skills check survey, talking points, and a complete job training analysis. Also included is an exercise to help trainees learn more about their mine’s roof control plan, as well as a list of supplemental training and reading materials. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their particular mine conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. The goal of every coal mine safety professional is to increase safety awareness and make mines a safer place to work. The Walk-Thru Bolting Machine Trainer’s Guide will help teach new miners skills to create a safer working environment that will ultimately prevent or reduce on-the-job injuries. Safety trainers can also use the ideas and concepts from this guide to develop their own training skills for the safe operation of other pieces of underground coal mining equipment.
