The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Ketchem Dome tin prospect in east-central Alaska to evaluate the tin resource. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration of the tin-bearing minerals. The tin mineralization consists of cassiterite (Sn02), which occurs as grains disseminated in a greisen (quartz-mica) matrixo A bulk sample from the largest and best-developed greisen vein exposed at Ketchem Dome contained 0.51 pct Sn. Concentration of the cassiterite by gravity table methods resulted in a product that contained 56 pct of the tin at a grade of 41.4 pct Sn. The mineralization exposed at Ketchem Dome is typical of greisen found in the area and elsewhere in interior Alaska.

Gold placer deposits along the upper Yukon River, in the region between the river villages of Circle and Eagle, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation was conducted intermittently between 1976 and 1985 as part of an evaluation of mineral resources on lands proposed for inclusion in the National Park System. At least 230,000 troy ounces (tr oz) of gold has been produced in the region, principally from Woodchopper, Goal, and Fourth of July Greeks. The placers are underlain by, or occur downstream of, early Tertiary sediments that have been deposited in the Eagle Trough. Strike-slip displacement along the Tintina Fault is responsible for creation of the trough and may have been a factor in the formation of the present placers. Placers were found to have a close spatial correlation to certain altered fault lineaments of the Tintina Fault trench. Placer concentrates contain several different textural forms of gold, suggesting multiple origins. Geological studies and a survey of 162 panned concentrates throughout the region indicated previously unreported sites of placer gold, and potential exists for the discovery of additional placer and lode gold. Because of nearly continuous soil and vegetation cover, further evaluation of the region will require subsurface sampling.

Bureau of Mines research to recover arsenic from mining industry waste material and process streams is reported. Batch and column approaches were investigated for adsorbing arsenic from acid leach solutions and ion-exchange eluate solutions with hydrated titanium dioxide granules. A method for producing hydrated titanium dioxide granules was devised to provide material suitable for use in a packed adsorption tower. Selective adsorption of arsenic from acidic leach solutions was achieved. The loading capacity of arsenic on the granules was 14 wt-pct when synthetic solutions were used, but lower when actual leach solutions were used. Other elements in the leach solution were Zn, Cd, and In. The granules were used in an attempt to lower the arsenic content in a solution containing 0.95 g/l W and 0.027 g/l As from a process devised by the Bureau of Mines to treat Searles Lake brine. The arsenic content was lowered to less than 0.001 g/l, but unacceptable amounts of tungsten also were adsorbed by the granules. Adsorbed tungsten was partially stripped with pH 11.5 NaOH, and both tungsten and arsenic were completely stripped with 5M NaOH solution. Repeated loading and stripping of the granules had no effect on the loading capacity for arsenic.

In 1984, the Bureau of Mines evaluated an area previously identified as having "probable mineral resource potential" for copper, lead, zinc, gold, or silver within the Elkhorn Wilderness, about 5 miles west of Winston, MT. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mineralized structures at nearby mines and prospects outside of the Wilderness extend into and contribute to the anomalous zone and, if so, to expand the domestic supply of strategic and critical mineral resources for future needs by identifying and quantifying resources on public lands. Fifty-eight soil samples, 23 rock samples, and 1 stream sediment sample were collected in the Staubach Creek area. Overall sample analyses suggest the anomalous zone in the Staubach Creek drainage is possibly associated with -.mall pyritiferous quartz veins. These veins or veinlets may be part of a system of northeasterly-trending structures prevalent in this art of the Wilderness. However, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that identified resources outside of the Wilderness extend into it in the Staubach Creek drainage, or that economic base- or precious-metal deposits are likely.

During the detection phase, several procedures can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SIN) . • Subarrays of up to 10 seismometers should be used. The apparent failure to obtain improvement in SIN in the Westinghouse subarrav work is probably due to excessive noise in the electronics. The spacings needed for sensors in the subarray must still be established. • The sensors should be buried. Even burial to a few feet will probably give appreciable reduction of noise. A deeper burial will probably further reduce the noise; and, if the seismometers can be put below the weathered layer, the signal level will probably be increased. The reduction in noise by burial will be especially effective during high noise periods due to wind or rain. • Before attempting detection, the waveforms should be bandpass filtered. The bandpass should go from 25 Hz to an upper frequency of 100 to 200 Hz. Further measurements with a low noise system must be done before the signal-to-noise ratio can be determined for the 100 to 200 Hz range. Any narrow band noise should be removed by notch filters. • If noise levels differ among seismometers of a subarray, weights inversely proportional to the noise power should be applied to the seismometers. • Automatic methods of screening data for possible signal arrivals should be developed, but the final determination that the signal on a subarray output appears to be from a miner should be made by an analyst. Detection of "signal" on several subarrays should be required for positive identification. In the location phase, after detection: • If repeated signals are received, they should be coherently added (stacked) to give as good a SIN as possible for use in determining signal arrival times, to be used in location computations. The miner should, if possible, repeat the signal 25 to 50 times.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

As a part of the work which the Bureau of Mines carried out in 1916 and 1917 pertaining to the compressibility of natural gas , it became necessary to de termine the pressure -volume relations of several of the paraffin hydrocarbons of which natural gas is composed . Results of the work on natural gas were published in Technical papers 131 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , The compressibility of natural gas to high pressure , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 131 , 1916 , 12 pp. ) and 158 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , Compressibility of natural gas and its constituents with analyses of natural gas from 31 cities in the United States , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 158 , 1917 , 12 pp . ) , and curves were given of pressure volume deviations of the gases , methane , ethane , propane , and carbon dioxide at high pressures . original experimental data on these gases , however , were not published . Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 350 meters (1150 ft .) and 488 meters (1600 ft .) . The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broad- band, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or E layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane. The measurement systems used are similar to those used earlier. The technique is to record broadband, analog signals, digitize the data, and use a fast- Fourier transform to obtain spectral plots. This tech- nique is novel in that it can measure simultaneously all magnetic field energy within a limited portion of the spectrum for a limited time, and, after processing, reproduce the events occurring in that time interval in great detail .

Analytical, geographical, and geological data on 67 samples of crude oils from Utah are presented, along with some correlations and interpretations. Most of the, geologic formations that produce oil in other areas are also productive in Utah; and as in many other locations, the Permian, Pennsylvanian, and Mississippian formations account for the major amount of the total oil produced in the State. Some anomalies and unusual phenomena are noted. Although most Utah oils are low in sulfur, a sample containing the highest percentage of sulfur ever recorded by the Bureau of Mines is among the oils discussed in this paper. Most of the oil from the major producing formations in Utah is low in sulfur; the same formations produce high-sulfur oils in adjoining Rocky Mountain States. Some Utah oils are both waxy and asphaltic, an unusual combination of characteristics. Correlation index curves for some oils are shown suggesting compositional differences in oils from different producing formations. Production statistics trace the rapid rise of oil production in the State after the first commercial discovery in 1947 and indicate a decline in amounts produced since 1959, the year of peak production in Utah.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information and advice regarding the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for the analysis of mine atmospheres. Such requests are made by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with the safety of mining operations. In many instances it is desired to install a complete laboratory, which will necessitate purchase of suitable gas-analysis apparatus and all the minor but important accessory equipment needed to carry on this type of work. Although publications that describe methods and techniques applicable to the analysis of mine atmospheres are available, it is not within the scope of such publications to give detailed information on laboratory equipment or design. Persons unfamiliar with laboratory practices and gas-analysis procedures may find it difficult to decide upon the proper equipment for their particular needs and to itemize the various accessories that must be obtained to set up a complete laboratory.The purpose of this circular is to discuss the different types of equipment that may be used in the analysis of mine atmospheres, with particular regard to the application and limitations of each type. Information on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres is given also, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. As much of the necessary equipment may be obtained from laboratory supply houses, the information should aid in arriving at estimates of the cost of proposed laboratories.The procedures involved in the analysis of mine atmospheres are not described; such information is contained in publications referred to in this circular."

Throughout the Appalachian Mountains there are dikes of coarse granite or pegmatite, which were intruded into other rocks. These pegmatite dikes contain feldspar, quartz, white mica (muscovite), black mica (biotite), and other minerals, such as beryl, garnet, and tourmaline. The investigation here reported has to do only with the dikes of the southern Appalachian region, in which the abundance of each mineral is as in the order given above. The pegmatites of this region are in every stage of alteration from those in which the feldspar is fresh to those in which the feldspar has decomposed to kaolin. The muscovite (white mica) shows no evidence of alteration, although most of the other associated minerals show traces of disintegration where the feldspar is completely kao- linized. At many places mining for mica has been done in dikes in which the feldspar is completely kaolinized, though the only evi- dences of disintegration in the mica are clay stains which are some- times noted between the outside lamina. Mining in these pegmatite dikes antedates history, traces of prehis- toric workings and some crude mining implements of stone having been unearthed by recent operations. The prehistoric mining is generally supposed to have been for mica, although investigations fail to show that the aborigines put the mica obtained to any par- ticular use except for ornaments, a few mica ornaments having been found in mounds in this region. The search for kaolin or semikaolinized feldspar is a plausible ex- planation of these prehistoric workings; all of them were in pegmatite that is more or less altered, and seemingly stopped only when the pegmatite became too hard to permit working with crude stone im- plements. The dumps do not represent the amount of material that one would expect, from their extent, the workings to have produced. The kaolin obtained was doubtless conveyed to the coast and sold to English traders for use in the manufacture of some of the early

"Usually a newly developed machine leaves the factory ""on a wing and a prayer."" The manufacturer hopes that the operator will hasten to report defects. In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. That is, instead of using the table to test the ore, the ore was used to test the table. In this critical examination of laboratory table six defects were encountered (and remedied). They are:"

The Ottoman law, which was in force in Palestine before the British con- quest of the country (1917-18), still forms the basis of the legal system. Nevertheless, with respect to mining, legislation has been considerably re- vised since the British occupation and mandate, some of the Ottoman laws having been either radically altered or wholly abolished, in order that the legal status of Palestine might be more in harmony with that of western States. Legal transition is still far from being complete; however, no further mining legislation is pending at the present time (March, 1931). Revisions during the British military occupation (1917-20) took the form of proclamations of the commander in chief. After the establishment of the civil administration (1920) changes in the legal system were a decided de- parture from the Turkish laws. In 1922 the practice was begun of giving con- secutive numbers and short titles to the ordinances. The basic mining law is the mining ordinance of 1925, No. 19 (amended by mining ordinance No. 10 of 1926), an "ordinance to make provision regarding the winning of minerals, and the conditions under which minerals may be gotten, and to replace the existing Ottoman laws relating thereto." The chief regu- latory provisions are embodied in regulations (A) and (B)--mining ordinance, 1925. This mining legislation of 1925 repealed the following laws:

Prevent collisions between large mine-haulage trucks and smaller vehicles parked in areas not visible to the haulage-truck operator, Approach Two electronic systems were developed to detect the presence of vehicles in the blind areas of a parked haulage truck. The systems can warn haulage truck operators of presence of vehicles that are blocked from view. The systems do not apply for trucks in travel. How It Works The systems use electronic transmitting techniques-one system is based on low-frequency radio waves and the other on very-high-frequency radio waves. Each system requires that a signal transmitter be mounted on the smaller vehicle to be detected. Continuous signals from this transmitter are sensed by receiving antennas mounted on the right front and rear of the large haulage truck. Upon receiving a signal, the receiver energizes warning lights and a buzzer in the cab of the haulage truck, alerting the operator to a possible collision hazard. Detection distance is adjustable, depending upon the size of the haulage truck, but a minimum of 30 feet was the design goal.

This report presents the results of an investigation by Federal Bureau of Mines engineers of water-injection projects in the northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York area, where oil-producing wells have been converted from pumping to flowing. Data from 24 leases converted to flowing were collected and examined. Only 10 leases had information of significant scope for inclusion in the final analysis. The projects were classified in one of two categories. Group I consisted of leases operated to permit an evaluation of operational changes in terms of existing pressure differentials between injection and producing wells. Group II included remaining properties, for which enough information was available to justify an economic analysis but which did not have sufficient production data to support an engineering study because of radical changes in operational techniques. Variations in production and costs resulting from conversion to flowing were examined for production methods, well-spacing and completion techniques, and reservoir characteristics. Where water-injection rates were constant, oil production usually decreased rapidly at the time of conversion; production then increased slightly for 6 to 8 months before resuming a normal decline rate considerably below the estimated pumping rate. The abrupt decrease in production after conversion is indicative of lower pressure differentials between injection and producing wells, caused by the increased hydrostatic head in the producing wells.

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.
