This paper addresses establishment of an experimental system for measuring biodynamic response (BR) of hand-arm system at the NIIH in Japan. BR measurement system at the NIIH is nearly equivalent to NIOSH installed system. The feasibility of the system is examined through the apparent mass (AM) measurement of the empty handle and a set of calibration masses. Apparatus The grip force was measured by using the handle shown in Fig. 1. The handle has two force sensors (KISTLER, 9212) and one accelerometer (PCB, 356A12). A low-pass filter with 5 Hz cut-off frequency was used to the grip force from measured force signal. Figure 2 shows BR measurement system in this study. The push or pull force at the handle was measured by using the force plate (KISTLER, 9286AA). The grip force and the push / pull force were displayed on a monitor. The shaker (IMV, VE-100S) is used to vibrate the hand-arm system along the forearm axis (Zh direction) (ISO 10068, 1998; ISO 5349-1, 2001). In most situations force actions for operating tools are expressed by grip, push, pull and combined these actions. These actions can be simulated in the test system. AM was obtained by performing H1 estimator in the PULSETM system (B&K, 3109) and it is denoted at the one-third octave band center frequencies. [ ] Methods In order to investigate the reliability of the system, AM measurement of the handle was performed. It is assumed that the handle is rigid in the upper limit of adoptive frequency range in this study. This assumption is validated in AM measurement of the empty handle. A pseudo-random vibration in the frequency range of 10 to 1,250 Hz was used and its amplitude is 1.0 (m/s2)2/Hz with a flat power spectral density (PSD) in the experiment. Measured AM includes the mass effect of the measuring cap in a subject experiment. Compensated apparent mass AMc(?) is obtained by Eq. (1) 1-2.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds from which samples could be obtained in Upshur County, W. Va. One of the 14 samples collected was of metallurgical quality as received, 6 could be sufficiently upgraded to provide acceptable products, and 7 could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because of their high sulfur contents.

A general increase in employment prevailed in the stone-quarrying industry of the United States during 1941 compared with 1940. Likewise, more accidents occurred to men working in and about the quarries, with the result that the accident-frequency rate for the industry as a whole was higher in 1941 than in the previous year. Reports from operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, covering open and underground quarries, as well as rock-crushing and rock-dressing plants, cement mills, and limekilns at or near the quarries, showed a total of 86,123 men employed and a total of more than 22 million man-days of labor performed during 1941. The total working time of the industry averaged 260 days per man. Measured in man-hours, the volume of work equaled 173 million, an average of 2,011 man-hours per employee.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews hypotheses for the mechanism by which water jets reduce the specific energy of cutting for drag bits. Several of these hypotheses are shown to be inconsistent with published evidence and new observations. The notion of a limiting cutting speed, above which water jets would be incapable of rendering assistance, is shown to be improbable. The hypothesis that seems most plausible is that specific energy reductions are mainly due to the erosion of crushed materials from in front of the bit. This hypothesis leads to a prediction that, for a given rock type and jet-bit configuration at a constant depth of cut, the reduction in bit forces should be a function of dM/dx, the jet energy spent per unit length of cut. This dependence upon dW/dx is shown to be consistent with other workers? results.

Poroplastic membranes containing ion exchange liquids were studied for separating cobalt from nickel-containing solutions similar to ammoniacal laterite leaches. The driving force for cobalt transport was differences in pH and composition between the leach and extraction streams. Using a diketone ion exchange liquid, a leach pH of 6.5 to 7.0, and a strip pH of 2.3, cobalt was extracted from a 750 ppm solution containing 2500 ppm of nickel at rates ranging from 1 to 10 µg/cm2 .min in single membrane cells, and from 10 to 100 in more closely spaced multiple membrane cells. Rates were variable, with evidence that cross -membrane flow pasterns were a key factor; a reproducible rate of 30 pg/cm .min would be economically viable. Loss of transport observed after several days of continuous operation was restored by flushing membranes with fresh ion exchange liquid. A major effort was devoted to preparation of thin, leak-free membranes; the resulting membranes endured operating conditions without mechanical failure.

Hatch (260) made the following pertinent statement regarding the present status of engineering design of dust-control equipment: Textbooks on ventilation and engineering handbooks devote little or no space to methods of control of industrial dust, and in the technical journals papers on fundamental engineering design of equipment are conspicuous by their absence. In a recent bibliography of the literature on pneumoconiosis less than 1 percent of the articles dealt with the engineering control of the disease. The science of dust control has not developed beyond the stage of trial and error, and the design of structures for the suppression of dust is based almost entirely upon empirical data together with one or two elementary formulas. The latter were derived from the generalized experience in a limited number of Industries such as woodworking, where conditions and requirements are not at all like those, for example, in a sand-pulverizing plant. Wide experience and good judgment are essential to the proper use of the scanty information that has been collected and systematized. Without attempting to minimize the importance of experience in engineering design, it is necessary to point out that most of the past experience obtained in the empirical design of dust-control equipment was not evaluated by means of quantitative studies of the actual reduction in dust , fence, past experience does not necessarily furnish the proper guide for future design. In fact, recent surveys in certain industries, employing modern methods of investigation, have shown that existing equipment is in many cases inadequate.

The Great Eastern nickel deposit is located in the western foothills of the Virgin Mountains in the Copper King or Bunkerville district situated in the southeastern part of Clark County, Nev. It is covered by a group of eight claims that can be reached by turning south from U. S. Highway 91 at Riverside, Nev., and driving about 12.6 miles southeast over a winding mountain road, which rises from about 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet in elevation. The climate is dry, with only a small amount of rainfall throughout the year. The temperature ranges from hot during the summer to short periods of freezing weather during the winter months. The vegetation is of the desert variety, and no timber is available for mining. Water for mining purposes would have to be pumped from lower areas. A granitoid gneiss comprises the largest part of the rock outcrops. It has a steeply dipping foliation that strikes about N. 75° E. The gneiss was intruded by basic dikes, which in turn were intruded by pegmatite dikes. The ore occurs as lenticular bodies formed by the convergence of several pegmatite dikes within the main dike. The principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which contain a small amount of nickel. Late in the year of 1939, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project on the Great Eastern property to extend or delimit the known mineralization. Underground work, consisting of 590 feet of drifting and crosscutting, was completed in September 1940, and 1,091 feet of diamond, drilling for downward extension of an ore body in the Lower edit, which was completed in February 1941.

Case histories were used to document and evaluate deficiencies in underground mine closures which have resulted in post-operation problems such as subsidence shaft failures, acid or toxic water drainage and others. Three different underground mining districts in the United States were investigated; 1) an iron mining district in Michigan 2) coal mining districts in eastern Ohio and southern Illinois and 3) three metal mining districts in central Colorado. Previous work in the Michigan district on problems with subsidence and acid water drainage provided the background from which the concept for this project was developed Student investigators working towards their MS degrees in Mining Engineering did the work on the eastern coal and western metal districts. The combined studies show that problems from acid water drainage, subsidence and inadequately protected mine shafts are the most severe and widespread. Suggestions of a technical nature are presented as partial solutions to some of these problems. It was determined that pre-closure evaluations could result in the identification of some potential problems that may occur after the mine is closed. Early recognition of these problems would be an advantage for at this time more options are available to the mine operator to either prevent them or to plan for their occurrence. Mine closure and reclamation should be considered as a part of mining and be incorporated in the mining plan. This would result in reduced environmental impact and would be achieved at a lower overall cost to the mining companies and to society. The role of water in the occurrence of several types of subsidence during mine flooding was significant at some mines in the Michigan district. These mechanisms which involve, friction reduction, gravity loading, overburden transport and hydraulic forces in a flooded mine probably have a broader effect than is currently recognized. Control of these processes may offer some interesting options during mine closure. It is recognized that technical solutions alone cannot provide all of the answers to problems associated with underground mines. Education, modified attitudes on the part of regulators and operators, and a more realistic perception of the importance and value of mining by the general public are also needed.

Electromagnetic narrow-band signals were transmitted through the earth at 27 coal mines located throughout the United States. From those Bureau of Mines tests, apparent earth conductivity values were derived based upon a homogeneous half-space model of the earth. The derived conductivity values were found to be inversely proportional to the transmitted frequency and mine depth. A linear regression model relating the logarithm of the conductivity to the mine depth was formulated, and the results indicate that the mine depth can be an adequate predictor of the apparent earth conductivity above coal mines. Apparent earth conductivity was found to decrease with mine depth.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

TECHNOLOGY is best nurtured by a sympathetic climate that is a composite of many factors. Necessity is a highly motivating factor as illustrated by the abnormal surge of technologic development curing wartime. Other factors include appropriate timing, economic pressures, available personnel, and in some instances, legislative action. Problems of recent concern to mining technology have been the quality and quantity of available technical personnel and the possibilities of restrictive legislation. The quality and quantity of technically trained personnel may be inadequate to meet the rapidly increasing complexity of modern technology coupled with the growing demand for qualified personnel. The question of appropriate training was a subject for debate.2 The curriculum and methods of teaching have changed. Questions have been raised on the relationship of scientist and engineer, interdisciplinary versus specialized curriculum, undergraduate versus graduate training, and the place of the smaller schools versus the large university-research complexes that have developed at some universities. Various aspects of the subject of engineering education for the mining industry were discussed at the meeting on Mining and Mineral Engineering Manpower at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, November 18-19, 1963. Meanwhile, the trend toward interdisciplinary training gathers momentum as illustrated by the establishment of the School of Engineering Science at Johns Hopkins, the Schools of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia, Princeton, and Yale, the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics at Harvard and, more recently, the School of Engineering Science at Florida State University which cuts across the conventional areas of civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.

The Mouat copper-nickel deposit in Stillwater County, south-central Montana, was examined by Paul T. Allsman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in 1939. Because of the strategic importance of nickel, a project was executed by John East, Jr., J. J. Naughton, and E. W. Newman, engineers of the Bureau, to further delimit some of the copper-nickel sulfide-bearing bodies that had been discovered by the Anaconda Copper Mining. Co. in 1937 and to investigate the central part of the deposit, which had not been drilled previously. This report is based largely upon the results of the. Bureau of Mines investigation and the results of exploration by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. In addition, a brief description is given of some other copper-nickel sulfide-bearing deposits along tho Stillwater Complex.

Kittusamy (Kittusamy & Buchholz, 2004) state that there have been few studies conducted to assess exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) in the construction industry. They suggest that there is very little reliable data from the construction industry that characterizes exposure levels to various hazards including WBV or the health outcomes from such exposure and that there is a need for more exposure data. In a recent exploratory study of heavy construction equipment Cann (Cann, Salmoni, Vi, & Eger, 2003) looked at vibration levels for 14 different types of construction equipment. Eight of the 14 pieces of equipment tested exposed operators to levels of WBV that exceeded the recommended limits for an 8-hour period when comparing the measured VDV to the ISO 2631-1 standards. The purpose of the present research was not only to test a larger number of scrapers but also to investigate scraper operator exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) separately for each task. Methods 33 scrapers were evaluated for WBV in a variety of residential and road construction projects. Testing equipment consisted of triaxial accelerometers that allowed vibration data collection in all three orthogonal axes, with the x-axis positioned to measure vibration in the anterior-posterior direction, the y-axis in the medial-lateral direction, and the z-axis in the vertical direction. Root mean square accelerations (aRMS), vibration dose value (VDV), crest factor, and maximum transient vibration values (MTVV) were derived from this software and exported to an Excel™ spreadsheet for later data analysis. Test sessions for each piece of equipment lasted for approximately 20 minutes until at least three work cycles had been completed. Tasks included: idling while waiting for a bulldozer to push the scraper through the scraping phase, scraping, traveling loaded with dirt, dumping and traveling empty. Results Task breakdown by time reveals 25% of the work cycle was spent traveling fully loaded with dirt, 19% dumping, 21% traveling unloaded, 17% idling and 18% scraping. Calculation of aRMS vector sums gave values of 2.55 m/s2 during loaded transport, 2.46 m/s2 during dumping, 2.31 m/s2 during unloaded travel, 0.55 m/s2 during idling and 1.46 m/s2 during scraping (see Table 1). The highest acceleration values recorded were found in the z-axis during fully loaded transport reaching an average aRMS over three work cycles of 2.55 m/s2.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. The Snowbank study area, which had been proposed as Wilderness, lies about 5 air mi southwest of Cascade, Idaho, and about 60 air mi north of Boise. The eastern boundary of the north-south-elongate study area lies 1-to 2-mi east of Cascade Reservoir; the western boundary is contiguous, in part, with the western boundary of Valley county. The 8,200-acre study area is underlain by Cretaceous granitoid rocks of the Idaho batholith. Three prospects were found in or near the study area during a library and field search. Gold occurs at one 30-ft adit, but the gold-bearing structure appeared too narrow to contain resources. Two other prospects appeared essentially unmineralized. No evidence of geothermal activity was observed. Rock in the area is not potentially useful as dimension stone because it does not split into flat slabs. To be used as aggregate, the rock would require crushing and hauling to distant markets. One of 18 alluvium concentrate (placer) samples contained free gold, worth $1.07 per cubic yard of gravel (at a $350 per oz gold price). No alluvial bars were seen; deposits were too small to contain gold resources or be considered gravel resources.

Early in 1936 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission and other groups interested in forecasts of demand for petroleum requested the Bureau of Mines to make a physical inventory of crude-oil stocks in the United States. Accordingly, the 74th Congress -appropriated funds for conducting such a survey during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1937. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at cement-plant quarries throughout the United States, end deals directly with methods and costs at the quarry and mill of the North American Cement Corporation at Catskill, N. Y. The process of manufacturing cement is described only as far as the final grinding of the raw materials. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a Whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding; of the scone of the cost tabulations may ensue.

The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.
