The Royal John mine was examined in November 1942 by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, who proposed development of the Royal John and other properties in the area. Geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey studied the area in 1943 and 1944 and made definite recommendations. Also, in 1943 the Peru Miring Co. mapped the Royal John and did considerable diamond drilling. The Bureau of Mines started the Royal John portion of a project pertaining to the general district in April 1944. This project was completed in Juno 1945. The work, consisting of diamond drilling, was supervised by Robert O. Hill, mining engineer, and the results were published in Report of investigations 3904, Exploration of Grey Eagle, Grandview and Royal John Claims, Grant County, N. WIC. In 1947 and 1948 the Royal John was re-examined by a Bureau engineer, and additional development to increase the reserves of low-grade lead-zinc ore was proposed. This project was started in August 1948 and completed in Juno 1949.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the advantage of using either a conventional sieve bend ahead of a vibrating screen or of attaching a sieve - bend screen surface onto a vibrating screen to serve as a scalping deck when dewatering or draining dense medium from fine coal . In dewatering , use of either the sieve bend or scalping deck increased the capacity of the vibrating screen tenfold and the recovery of coal finer than 0.5 mm threefold , with no sacrifice in the moisture content of the oversize product . In dense -medium drainage , either the sieve bend or the scalping deck reduced the amount of magnetite retained on the product of the vibrating screen , particularly when the medium was as dense as that characteristic of the underflows from dense - medium cyclones . The sieve bend was slightly superior to the scalping deck in dewatering , but the scalping deck was clearly superior in dense -medium drainage . Additional advantages of the scalping deck are lower cost and a substantial saving in headroom.

It details both common and unique engineering methods by which the respirable dust, which is generated in coal mines, can be controlled. This document was compiled by Apt, Bramer, Conrad and Associates, Inc. under contract number H0111464, issued by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and forms Volume II of the final report. This contract was authorized by and executed pursuant to the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety. Act of 1969 (P. I. 91-173; 83 Stat. 742).

"INTRODUCTION The Powhatan mine of the Franklin Coal Mining Co. is located in the western part of Jefferson County, Ala., on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 40 miles west of Birmingham. The Mary Lee bed at this point yields coal with fair coking qualities, but with an ash content as mined so high as to prohibit its use in the production of metallurgical coke. At present the entire output of the mine is washed in single-compartment jigs and marketed as locomotive and domestic fuel.Figure 1 gives a typical seam section of the Mary Lee bed at the Powhatan mine. This section shows that the bed is divided by rock partings into three benches. In many parts of the mine, particularly in the older workings the roof rock is so weak that it can not be held without excessive timbering. This condition has restricted the operation in many parts of the mins to the middle and bottom benches of coal. The 6 inches of draw rock between the top and middle benches is very strong and makes an excellent roof requiring only a normal amount of timbering to support it. In the newer workings of the mine the character of the rock above the top bench is strong and it is believed that in the future it will be possible to work all three benches. This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the Mary Lee bed at Powhatan and the effect on these characteris-tics of including or omitting the coal from the top bench. It was also the purpose of the study to show whether it would be possible to produce a washed product sufficiently low in ash to be used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. This paper is one of a series of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and tin University of Alabama. With the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama. It contains the results of screen sizing and float-and-sink tests of representative samples of run-of-mine coal, and the results of table tests on the minus 3/16-inch sizes of the raw coal."

The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a means of designing splice connectors which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. Because of the empirical nature of this effort, time has been devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. Special attention is given to the splice flexing machine which served as the backbone of the test program. In order to familiarize persons with connector terminology, a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. Various types of cable joints are also defined. The major effort is a connector design parameter study. Utilizing the optimum parameters developed along with the suggested design procedure outlined in Appendix I should result in significantly improved splice performance and thus meet the objectives of this contract. A field test program was instituted for the purpose of insuring adaptability of connector design and associated installation tooling along with a field performance study. During the course of work, other significant factors affecting splice performance were uncovered. Although not covered by the scope of this contract, a brief discussion is presented for the purpose of stimulating interest in what is considered other fruitful areas for improved splice performance.

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

While analyzing synthesis gas produced from coal, the Bureau of Mines found that conventional procedures for naphthalene determination were difficult and time consuming. The Bureau developed a rapid and sensitive turbidimetric procedure, which requires only simple instruments and hence can be used in plant-control laboratories. The gas is passed through a saturated aqueous solution of picric acid at 3° to 4° C. whose turbidity is then measured at room temperature. A dispersing agent is added to prevent coagulation of the suspension on warming. Only about 1 mg. (0.015 grain) of naphthalene need be absorbed, and precision and sensitivity are a few ten-thousandths of a grain, or a few hundredths of a grain per 100 cubic feet. The determination can be completed less than 10 minutes after absorption. INTRODUCTION One of the functions of the Branch of Coal Gasification, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va., is to develop economical methods for manufacturing, from coal, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide for producing hydrogen, methane, and other gaseous fuels. This raw gas may contain many impurities, including naphthalene. This impurity is usually determined by first forming naphthalene picrate in a water solution of picric acid, separating the picrate, and titrating the unreacted picric acid or the picrate itself.

During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from four properties in Siskiyou and Mendocino Counties northern California. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable to manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made between 1941 and 1945 to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Johnson and Reynolds properties are near Fort Jones Siskiyou County. The ore occurs in a number of small lenses in that area. Samples were taken for testing for amenability to treatment in a small custom-gravity plant, tentatively planned. by the Waiter Johnson interests of San Francisco. A 2-ton representative sample was obtained from numerous exposed portions of an outcrop on the property of the Mayland Mining Co. The Mayland mine is about 8 miles from Sawyers Bar in Siskiyou County. The ore body consists of stringers and irregular masses of oxide, and. silicate ore scattered through quartz, which these minerals have replaced.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. This Bureau of Mines report analyzes diverse observations of the rates and mechanisms for the pyrolysis and devolatilization of coal and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). New data are presented for PMMA, together with new morphological evidence for the microscopic structure of the pyrolysis and devolatilization wave front in coals. It is concluded that there is no substantive evidence to support the traditional viewpoint that the pyrolysis and devolatilization rate process occurs isothermally, under chemical rate control; or is described realistically by a classical, unimolecular Arrhenius function of temperature. Instead, the reaction process occurs as a highly nonisothermal, heat-flux-driven, pyrolysis and devolatilization wave front, whose speed of propagation is predictable by internal heat transport constraints. Except for the complication of its charlayer residue, whose increasing thickness insulates the pyrolysis wave front from the heat source flux that drives it, both coal and PMMA behave similarly during pyrolysis and devolatilization. For PMMA, decomposition occurs at a temperature of 3500 to 5500 C; for coal it occurs at 4500 to 6000 C. There is no evidence that the reactant temperature ever exceeds those values regardless of the source temperature to which the samples are exposed.

Cleaning and handling of fine coal are generally conceded to be more difficult problems than preparation of the coarser sizes. Increased mechanization in the coal-mining industry has, in general, resulted in an increased percentage of the fine sizes in the total coal mined. If the coal fines are cleaned by wet methods, the minus-1/16-inch square-mesh particles cause most of the sludge and slurry problems encountered in preparing wet coal. Equipment that separates coal from refuse on the basis of specific gravity is not efficient on sizes that, because of their fineness, do not follow the same laws of hindered settling as the larger particles. Probably the best solution of fine-coal cleaning problems is to use other methods, such as flotation, that utilize other physical characteristics than those determining hindered-settling ratios. Regarding the type of flotation known as the Elmore vacuum-flotation process there has been a scarcity of data and information available in this country. An investigation has therefore been made to obtain additional date and information on this process under laboratory conditions. During this investigation an effort has been made to evaluate the relative efficiencies of vacuum and mechanical laboratory froth flotation cells. The investigation included float-and-sink, screen-sizing, and flotation tests on 2 different samples of 14-mesh to 0 raw coal and an a sample of slurry from the settling-tank overflow of a typical washer. One raw-coal sample was obtained from the American bed and represented a type of coal that is relatively easy to clean. The other raw-coal sample was from the Mary lee bed and represented a type considered difficult to clean.

An investigation was made to devise and evaluate a flexible flotation method for beneficiating typical tactite types of calcareous scheelite - bearing ores ; these scheelite - bearing ores are available in large tonnages in deposits containing 0.2 to 0.3 pct tungsten trioxide . The objective was to achieve a high recovery of the tungsten in concentrates , containing a minimum of 10 pct WO3 , that would be suitable for chemical processing into high- quality synthetic scheelite . The principal problems encountered and resolved by bench- scale flotation tests on ore samples from five different deposits were to define the conditions and reagent combinations essential for ( 1 ) achieving selective flotation of a small amount of scheelite from a large amount of calcite and ( 2 ) controlling the effect of small amounts of calcium , magnesium , and iron salts in the ores and water used . The flotation process was evolved from batch tests and continuous runs in a pilot - scale mill with a capacity of 100 lb per hour . The flotation process comprised ( 1 ) removal of sulfide minerals , ( 2 ) conditioning the residual ore pulp with sodium carbonate , quebracho , and trisodium phosphate , and ( 3 ) rougher flotation and single - stage cleaning of a scheelite concentrate . In a pilot plant run , over 91 pct of the tungsten was recovered from ore containing 0.27 pct WO3 , in a concentrate containing 11.2 pct WO3 .

A novel approach to eliminating environmental and public safety hazards that are associated with fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks involves the use of in situ combustion technology developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to accelerate the burning of the wasted coals in place. This technology would be used under exhaust ventilation control conditions that would allow for total management of the hot gases produced. Combustion stoichiometries would be optimized to minimize unburnt combustibles and to maximize the heat content of the gas products, which will be exhausted at one or more fan locations. When necessary, scrubber systems would be employed to remove air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide; heat utilization systems (process heat, steam, and electricity) would also be employed to offset operational costs. Ultimately, complete burnout would solve the fire and acid water formation problems of the abandoned coal mine or waste bank. Pertinent technical data for burnout control are derived and discussed in terms of the important material and operational parameters. In general, it is believed feasible to operate a burnout system in an existing abandoned mine or waste bank fire at thermal power levels in the range of 10 to 100 Mw, and at exhaust gas temperatures of 1,000° C (1,830° F).

This: report gives data on the installation and operation of a packaged-unit heat-pump installation in a residence in McLean, Va., a suburb of Washington, D. C. The original equipment, installed in January 1947, was one of the first of 50 experimental Marvair units manufactured by the Muncie Gear Works, Inc., Muncie, Ind. The compressor unit of this installation was replaced by the company in September 1947, with a modified commercial model. The commercial unit and the original pump and fan accessories have been used as the sole means of heating (and cooling in summer! the. residence for the subsequent five winters and summers. The conclusions and data given herein, therefore, cover 6 winters sad 6 summers of heat pump operation, including 1 winter when temperatures averaged below normal for 2 months and the following summer when temperatures were above normal.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

This report describes the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS) developed by the Bureau of Mines to analyze the records of industrial hygiene samples collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in metal and nonmetal mines. MIDAS is the first system capable of sorting, editing, analyzing, and reporting these data. It is also the first system designed to be used by a number of Government agencies. At present the system contains 225,000 personal and area samples for 61 contaminants in 45 industries. The records date from 1974 to early 1980, and MSHA plans to provide yearly updates to the system. This report presents preliminary analyses of dust exposures and discusses the potential uses and limitations of these data. Analysis of the dust data for 1978 and 1979 showed that bagging had the highest percentage of dust overexposure. Morn than 40 pct of the 1,536 respirable quartz dust, total nuisance dust, and total silica dust samples exceeded the MSHA exposure limit. Other dusty occupations are ranked according to their percentage of overexposure.

As part of the Bureau's intensive investigation of domestic manganese deposits, lots of ore for testing were collected by Bureau engineers during examinations of several properties in Juab County, Utah. One low-grade and two intermediate-grade samples (13.5, 25.3 and 27.5 percent manganese) were procured by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the 900--and 1,100-foot levels of' the Tintic Standard mine, situated 2 miles southeast of Eureka, Utah. The ore bodies were described as blocks of ore approximately 60 feet long, 40 feet wide, and 20 to 100 feet deep. The manganese-iron association in the Tintic Standard ores was intimate, and no significant concentration of the low-grade sample was made by ore dressing, However, both of' the higher-grade samples were readily beneficiated to marketable manganese products. Ore from the Oxen No. 5974 claim, 2 miles northeast of Eureka, Utah was low in grade (19.4 percent manganese) and was not amenable to the production of high-grade concentrates owing to the intimacy of association of the manganese minerals with silica. However, a fair manganese recovery was obtained in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent manganese. The ore body is reported to be a replacement in limestone and is composed of manganese oxides intermixed with silica, decomposed rhyolite, and limestone. The Fields property consists of five mineral claims situated 3 miles north of Eureka, Utah. The deposit is a replacement in a contact between limestone and a quartz dike. Tests were made on representative samples of a 50-ton lot stored on the property. Although the mineral association in the ore (22.2 percent manganese) is not particularly complex, the physical properties of the manganese minerals render the ore refractory to ore-dressing beneficiation. As the ores varied widely in physical and chemical characteristics, samples from each property were considered as separate ore-dressing problems.

The pegmatite investigations at the Rapid City, S. Dak., Experiment Station during; the pact 3 years have been primarily a study of recovering beryl from nonlithium-bearing pegmatite rock by continuous-testing methods. Beryl concentrates containing 25 to 88 percent beryl were produced from rock that ranged in beryl content from 0.1 to 2.5 percent. The beryl recovery ranged upward from 70 percent but averaged better than 80 percent. Although promising results have been obtained with flotation methods for upgrading these concentrates to standard specifications, additional work is needed to improve and simplify the procedure. In addition, it was demonstrated that several potentially useful coproducts could also be recovered from pegmatite rock. The principal coproducts were mica, feldspar, and quartz. A heavy-mineral product also was made from pegmatites containing tin, tantalum, and columbium. The recovery if these minerals in products meeting the specifications of the commercial users has been reserved for future study. The investigations also included studies on extraction of beryllium from both high-grade beryl and flotation concentrates of medium beryllium content. The procedure investigated consisted of sintering beryl or beryl flotation concentrates with limestone, acid curing the resulting sinter with sulfuric acid to dissolve the beryllium, and water leaching to extract the beryllium. Over 90 percent of the beryllium was extracted by this procedure. Most of the optimum conditions and quantities of reagents were determined for dissolving the beryllium. As aluminum and iron also were taken into solution by the acid, further research is needed on methods of recovering high-grade beryllium salts from the solutions containing these elements.

Future applications of seismic holography to "seismically transparent phase objects," such as rock inclusions, fracture zones, liquid-filled cavities, etc., will require techniques to improve the poor image contrast generally characteristic of these objects. Although conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques could be used, these methods involve additional optical elements such as quarter-wave spatial filters. Owing to the anticipated practical difficulties of properly alining such optical devices and properly locating poorly defined image planes and filter planes, this approach is not considered to be well-suited to the case of seismic holograms and their laser reconstructions. Results similar to those achieved with spatial filters may be obtained without filters by specially processing the seismic hologram data. The new process, which is an extension of Gabor's subtraction holography, achieves an improvement in contrast by an interferometric technique. The process involves adding a ?before" hologram without an object present to a 90° phase-shifted "after" hologram with the object present. Then, the combination is reconstructed with a laser or by computer. Not only is the image contrast improved in such processed holograms, but the images are also phase-contoured. In general, the latter feature is not to be expected when conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques are employed. The new technique is experimentally verified by examining computer-generated synthetic seismic holograms rather than by examining actual seismic field data. However, results of this study are directly applicable to real seismic data and should prove useful in future applications of seismic holography.
