The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

To increase safety and productivity in mining , the potential uses and hazards of rigid foam were investigated by the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine . This research resulted in the development of chemical formulations , spraying equipment , and application procedures that permit safe and effective use of urethane foams for improving mine ventilation , for reducing weathering of mine rock and steel , for constructing seals in fire areas , and for thermal insulation .

This publication presents original thermal data for a typical variety of perlite and supplies basic information for use in computing energy requirements in processes for expanding perlite. Perlite has been defined by Raiston 4/ as any silicious lava containing dissolved water in sufficient amount to errand into bubbles when the material is quickly heated to a suitable point in the softening range." The uses of expanded perlite in) the construction and ceramic industries have been discussed by Ralston 4/ and King. 5/ The work described here had a dual purpose: (1) It was desired to ascertain quantitatively, using a typical variety of perlite, just how firmly the contained water is held, and (2) it was desired to obtain basic thermal data sufficient for energy-requirement calculations in processes for expanding perlite.

The Big mine has been a source of mica and high-grade felspar from separate zones in the same pegmatite dike since 1914. In 1943 it became the outstanding producer of strategic mica in New England. The urgent need for sheet mica led to core-drilling by the Bureau of Mines from February to May 1914. Nine diamond-drill hob's aggregating 1,474 feet in length were drilled by the Bureau of Mines with the objective of developing extensions of the known mica shoots. The use of large-diameter bits made it feasible to obtain reasonably reliable results in diamond-drilling this type of deposit.

The Bureau of Mines determined the composition of the vapors liberated during thermal decomposition of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate. Small samples were heated from room temperature to 5500 C with initial heating rates from 500 to 2000 C/min. Gases were rapidly swept away from the heated chamber with Ar and subjected to immediate analysis in order to minimize reaction between the components. In addition to H20, four N-containing compounds were identified: HN03, N02, NO, and N20. Nz could not be determined in the presence of the nitrogen oxides, and at-tempted separation from the oxides led to the formation of more nitrogen. Relative amounts of each component were found to vary over a period of time; however, total amounts measured with different heating rates were reasonably constant and were typically as follows: 84.2 pct HN03, 7.1 pct N02, 4.3 pct NO, and 4.2 pct N20. HN03 and NO were determined from chemical reactions with a permanganate solution, N20 was measured with a mass spectrometer, and NO2 was measured with a spectro-photometer. Details of the methods used are described. Since NO2 and NO can readily be converted to HN03, about 96 pct of the N from the decomposition can be recovered as HN03

During 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 19,700 acres that included the Fish Creek Mountains WSA (Wilderness Study Area), 15 miles southwest of the Salton Sea. Two United States Gypsum Co. claim groups in the WSA have more than .20 million tons of inferred gypsum reserves. These high-grade, surface and near-surface gypsum deposits are an extension of a gypsum bed that has been mined continuously since 1922. The Waters prospect in the central part of the WSA has large quantities of limestone suitable for many commercial uses. Sand and gravel is plentiful in the WSA in alluvial fan and ancient shore-line deposits. Limestone and alluvial deposits are not economic because similar material is closer to potential markets. No evidence of energy minerals or geothermal resources was identified in the WSA. A portion of the eastern Fish Creek Mountains WSA is leased for oil and gas exploration. United States Gypsum Co. holds eighteen unpatented placer claims in the northwestern part of the WSA. No other mining claims or mineral leases were identified in the study area. No mineral production is known from within the WSA.

The Bureau of Mines Gas Synthesis Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., includes apparatus for the gasification of pulverized coal with oxygen and superheated steam. A pebble heater constructed by the Babcock & Wilcox Co. is used to superheat nominal 5-pound steam for the gasification process, usually to temperatures of 1,600° to 2,300° F. with flow rates of 1,400 to 2,300 pounds per hour. Heaters of this sort have been described. So far as is known, the Babcock & Wilcox Co. is the sole commercial manufacturer of equipment of this type. Units have been built with capacities above 18,000 pounds of steam per hour.

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of depleted uranium as a sacrificial anode for the cathodic protection of submerged and underground structures of iron , steel , and copper . Uranium-metal couples were tested in simulated marine environments of varying oxygen contents at pH values between 5.5 and 8.5 and under simulated boiler service condition in Rolla , Mo. , city water . Similar couples were tested in samples of Missouri soils to simulate underground service . Uranium remained anodic to iron , steel , and copper in the simulated marine environments and under simulated boiler service if the electrolyte was oxygen- free city water . Uranium appeared to offer limited protection to iron , low- carbon steel , stainless steel , copper , and zinc in the simulated underground tests . Uranium anodes offer a space advantage because 1 cubic inch of uranium gives approximately the same protection as 2 cubic inches of magnesium or 1-1 /2 cubic inches of zinc .

The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

[A cost/benefit analysis was conducted by comparing the industry cost to protective structures on low-coal face equipment with the benefits paid for injuries/fatalities considered preventable by the use of these structures. Th industry costs were based on estimates by OEM's and rebuild shops for install protective structures on new and rebuilt face equipment. The accident benefit was based on evaluations performed by the USBM Accident Cost Indicator Model. Industry wide population data were developed on low-coal face equipment and injuries/ fatalities preventable with protective structures. The results of the analysis are to be used as a tool by USBM in determining the feasibility of continuing development of cab and canopy technology for low-coal equipment.]

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

Thermodynamic properties of metal halides and, in particular, vapor pressures have become of great importance in recent years owing to increased application of chemical processing to extraction of metals from their ores. Vapor pressure data serve not only as a valuable source of latent heat of vaporization and fusion values but also differences in metal-halide vapor pressures often provide the basis for their separation by conventional mass transfer operations. This literature search was made to provide a ready reference to experimental vapor-pressure data of metal halides and oxyhalides. Results are reported in two main sections: (1) A tabulation of vapor- pressure references for each of the metal halides (listed by metal) for which actual experimental data are reported (table 1), and (2) a bibliography of the citations. Metal halides and oxyhalides are listed by chemical formula and chemical name, based on the stock4 system. To facilitate location of the references, a listing of the journal titles and their abbreviations follows the bibliography.

The principal objective of this Program is the design, fabrication and testing of an Environmental System for operation in underground mines, to assess the effect of various mining systems on the contaminant levels near the mine face and within return airways. In order to determine the effect on airborne contamination in mines resulting from the development of new mining techniques, equipment and control systems, a Comprehensive Monitoring System is required to assess such contamination levels at critical and strategic locations and relate this information with ventilation parameters. The three variables to be sensed on a continuous basis are airborne dust concentration, methane concentration and ventilation air velocity. Each Monitoring Station will consist of a self-contained unit containing a power source and sensors to monitor the three above mentioned parameters. Ruggedness, reliability, ease 'of operation and intrinsic safety are important design objectives. Data gathered by each Monitoring Station will be fed to a Central Data Acquisition System by means of a portable transfer unit.

This report presents results of an investigation undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the clay content of typical petroleum reservoir sands in Wyoming and the effect of clay content on the permeability behavior of the sands. These results should have significance in determining the feasibility of injecting water into the sands for secondary recovery and in estimating the probable damage incurred by these sands if invaded with filtrates from water-base drilling muds. The results of air-, brine-, and water-permeability determinations are given for reservoir sands in three Wyoming fields. The amounts of materials of "fine silt and clay size" (Wentworth scale) in the sands and the types of clay minerals present, as identified by X-ray diffraction methods, are also presented and discussed.

This report describes laboratory-scale experimental treatment of six base-metal ore samples taken by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Region II, while investigating ore deposits in California and Nevada. The information is of interest in developing the mining districts represented or when similar ores from other sources are being studied. Simple treatment methods were employed as far as possible. More complex treatments also were tried when necessary. The possibilities and limitations of the methods applied to the several ores are shown by the data herein reported.

As a part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the United States. Published reports that set forth the pertinent facts of these operations help others to profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in Kentucky by the Cumberland Petroleum Co. on its L. C. Bailey lease, Oil Springs pool, Magoffin County, Ky. This is believed to be the first water-flooding project in eastern Kentucky (fig. 1).
