Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest cost in underground mining operations. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of belt conveyors, a common practice in coal and similar soft miner ii mines. This is particularly true if oversize ore and rock can he eliminated prior to conveying; thus producing a demand for crushers near the production areas. Portable feeder-breakers are extensively used in conveyorized mines, but no suitable, equivalent equipment, is available to provide these benefits to hard rock mines of low to medium headroom. A hard rock crusher capable of easy movement and readily disassembled would allow use to belt conveyors and could improve the general safety and productivity of any underground ore hauling system. This report summarizes proposals and findings made in conjunction with the newly designed M-44 Low Head Portable Crusher which is believed well capable of meeting the requirements of a "portable, underground, hard rock" machine as previously defined in earlier reports. Data gathered by use of the 1/4 Scale Model of the M-44 has substantiated and verified the concept sufficiently to justify construction of a full-size machine for further testing under actual mine conditions.

This paper presents the details of milling practice and costs at the conglomerate mill of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., Lake Linden, Mich., and is one of a series on milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines of the Calumet & Hecla. Consolidated Copper Co. are located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan. The mines of this district lie in a belt not over 4 miles wide and 100 miles long, which contains more or lees commercial ore. The Calumet & Hecla properties are the farthest north, except for the Seneca, of the operating mines. The district borders on Lake Superior, and by means of the Portage and Torch Lake waterways the largest lane vessels, can transport coal and other supplies from the lower Lakes directly to the company docks.

The Bureau of Mines studied the costs of transporting fossil fuels, coal, and residual fuel oil from areas of production to consumer regions. Transportation data were stratified by type of carrier, size of shipment, and distance to determine what general effects these variables have upon transportation costs. Economics of haul for coal exist for longer versus shorter distances, and for larger versus smaller trainload sizes. Tanker and barge transportation of residual fuel oil does not show economies of haul for longer distances. It is shown that tanker size and seasonal variation are primary factors influencing the cost of shipping. Railroad transportation data show that coal from western coalfields could be competitive with foreign residual fuel oil in selected midwestern fossil fuel markets. However, the western coal would not be competitive in the New England and the eastern seaboard energy markets.

4. Preliminary Study - Remote Seal Checker 4.1 Introduction Determination of the completeness of each individual seal at the time of its emplacement is essential for an effective remote sealing system. A satisfactory seal checking technique should provide a signal which: (1) indicates percentage completion as the seal is emplaced (2) provides a definite indication of a complete seal (3) indicates the size of the unsealed area if a complete seal is not feasible This information is required to establish the need for additional seal material, the need for additional seals, and the risk likely involved in entering the mine., In many situations it is as important to know the quality of a seal as it is to build an effective one. It is likely that with repeated use the remote sealing technique developed by Foster-Miller Associates will be sufficiently reliable and predictable to preclude the seal checking requirement. It is recommended, however, that each seal be checked during construction to insure its completeness and increase the level of confidence so necessary in reopening the mine. 4.2 Description of General Problem Several characteristics of remote mine seals are important in considering techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of these seals. In the 39 years from 1891 to 1929 , gas and dust explosions in the coal mines of Tennessee caused 413 deaths , or one- third of the fatalities in the mines for that period . Inasmuch as explosions caused but about 15 per cent of mine fatalities for the whole United States for this same period it is evident that the Tennessee coal mining record is by no means good , as far as explosion fatalities are concerned . Since 1926 , Tennessee has had a clear record as to fatalities from explosions ; this fact may be credited very largely to the improved conditions and safer practices in Tennessee's coal mines which have been brought about by the work of the State Inspection Department and of the Southern Appalachian Coal Operators Association directed toward adoption of safety precautions and practices most of which are advocated by the United States Bureau of Mines . Chief among these improvements are the replacement of black powder and dynamite by permissible explosives , improved ventilation , and the installation of rigid methods of inspection for gas . With the present tendency for operations to pass into the hands of responsible and informed management , and with unrelaxed care and inspection , the good record of the past several years should be maintained .

The Federal Bureau of Mines has pioneered the work of preparing ductile titanium on a large scale and has also determined the basic properties of this new and most interesting metal. A number of reports (1, 2, 3: 4, 5) have al-ready been published, and considerable interest has been aroused in a number of industrial and research laboratories. Some of these laboratories have also published results of their work on the pure metal. Although the properties of titanium itself are quite promising, it is apparent that considerable improvement may be expected by alloying titanium with other metals. That is, pure metals in general have shown relatively large improvements in properties when alloyed with other metals and titanium is not considered to be an exception to the rule. Therefore, the emphasis of the investigations now under way in the Federal Bureau of Mines Laboratories has been placed on the study of the alloys of titanium, particularly the titanium-rich alloys. While the main interest is in the properties of such alloys, proper direction and evaluation of the work require at least a rough outline of the phase boundaries of the alloy systems involved.

Examination of seismic records during the time interval of the Sago Mine disaster in 2006 revealed a small amplitude signal possibly associated with an event in the mine. More needs to be understood about the seismicity from mine explosions in order to properly interpret critical seismic information. A seismic monitoring system located at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine has monitored experimental gas and dust based explosions and impact tests. The seismic signatures from these different events were analyzed using standard waveform analysis procedures. The magnitude of seismic energy during a gas and dust explosion was found to be more dependent on mine entry geometry and seal behavior rather than on the amount of explosive fuel present. The results suggest a large explosion that’s not restricted can generate potentially the same magnitude as a small explosion that is restricted.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., conducted a rock mechanics study at four widely spaced horizons in a deep mine shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to measure and analyze rock deformation and lining behavior during construction of a deep shaft in a high in situ stress field within an isotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were monitored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. This report discusses the general trends and magnitudes of data from the four test sites, and relates the data to a proposed anisotropic constitutive model for the rock mass. A design procedure is then outlined for specifications of liner thickness and support installation sequences for future shaft sinking.

"The McLeod sand pits, on the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River in Wheeler County, Ga., opposite Lumber City in Telfair Co., were examined by the Bureau of Mines under its war program of Investigation of Critical and Essential Minerals. The pits are about a quarter of a mile above the bridge, which is half a mile above Lumber City. Mrs. A. T. McLeod of Lumber City owns the land, including the pits. The property was inspected by an engineer of the Bureau of nines on March 8, 1945, on recommendation of Capt. Garland Peyton, director, Division of nines, Mining, and Geology of Georgia.The Mcleod pits are at the northwestern extremity of a mile-long series of old pits that were worked from about 1900 until the 1920's. The burning of the spur railroad bridge connecting the pits with the Southern Railway at Lumber City stopped mining operations. The pits on the south-east, or opposite, side of the Glennwood Road from the McLeod pits were first worked by F. L. Hinson and later, in 1921, by Mrs. n. H. Mobley. The glass sand was shipped to Tallapoosa, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn., where it was used in the manufacture of bottles for soft drinks. Some of the sand was used as molding and construction material. The sand was mined by hand shoveling it into wheelbarrows, which were unloaded on freight cars. The pits were partly refilled with overburden, so that it is impossible to estimate even roughly the amount of sand excavated.Analyses of samples of glass sand made years age3/ and later in 19404/ roughly check those made by the Bureau of Mines laboratory, except that in the former the iron oxide content usually was greater, attaining a maximum of 0.72 percent.The sand pits are in a valley slightly more than a quarter of a mile wide that lies along the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River. The land is either flat or marked by ridges only a few feet high. . A rather thick growth of scrub trees covers most of the valley. The surrounding country consists of gently rolling farm lands. The altitude of the valley is not known, but, judging by its distance from the seashore, it probably is about 200 feet. In addition to the Glennwood highway, which crosses the valley, several old sand roads lead to the pits."

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by sparks caused by frictional impact of aluminum alloys on rusted steel at typical coal mine fan speeds. The objectives were to establish the incendivity of aluminum alloys under these conditions, to investigate differences between aluminum alloys, and to evaluate substitute materials for the aluminum-steel combination. With a specially designed apparatus, three commercial aluminum casting alloys and a number of experimental aluminum alloys were tested for incendivity of the frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. All aluminum alloys tested produced some ignitions. Of the experimental alloys, the harder alloys and those containing silicon tended to be more incendive than the others. With the normal experimental conditions, constructional steel, stainless steel, brass, and plastic did not cause ignition of methane-air mixtures in frictional impact against rusted steel. Some ignitions occurred with constructional steel at high speed in more flammable gas mixtures enriched with oxygen. From these findings, it is suggested that constructional material combinations other than the aluminum-steel combustion would minimize this inc endive hazard. A detailed description is given of previous research, and comparison is made with present results where appropriate.

"Underground operation.In its broader sense the term ""mining"" is applied to all processes whereby raw materials are taken from the earth to be used as sources of mineral products. In a more restricted sense ""mining"" is applied to underground operations as contrasted with open pit work designated as quarrying. The tern is used in the restricted tense in this paper; for it relates to the exploitation of limestone deposits by modern methods of underground operation rather than by open pit methods.Present tendency toward miningIt may seem to some readers that a paper on mining limestone will find little general interest among lime plant operators, for only a limited number of them have yet resorted to this means of procuring raw materials. It is noteworthy, however, that a growing tendency exists toward underground operation, for one by one quarry owners are faced with increasing difficulties in open pit operation. It seems desirable, therefore, for operators to keep closely in touch with this gradual change in process, to inquire into the underlying causes, to compare costs, and to study the effects of the change in method on subsequent steps in calcining the stone to produce lime."

A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a research program on the characterization of tars produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal and their economical upgrading to more valuable materials, Throughout the years, hydrogenation has played an important role in the treatment of these tars, mainly as a means of converting the whole crude tar or selected fractions to motor fuels; diesel oil, lubricating oil, or various solvents. In some instances, production of specialty chemicals has been the objective. The purpose of this report is to summarize, without critical review, the information of the past 25 years on the hydrogenation of low-temperature tars and related substances as presented in the literature or its English translation. Published articles and patents not abstracted in the main body of this report are included in a bibliography at the end. The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.

Increased activity in the beneficiation of taconite, particularly the magnetic variety, has shown the need for more information on the rate of oxidation of magnetite to hematite. This oxidation occurs in the pelletizing step of the beneficiation process. Magnetic taconite is an intimate association of magnetite and a siliceous gangue. It must be ground to approximately 70 to 30 percent minus 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite from the gangue. With sufficient liberation, magnetic concentration will yield a product high enough in iron and low enough in silica for blast-furnace use. The magnetic concentrate must be agglomerated before it can be used in a blast furnace. Agglomeration is the general term applied to all methods of compacting or consolidating fine iron-oxide materials, sintering and pelletizing being the two most common methods. Sintering is clone on a Dwight-Lloyd or Greenawalt sintering machine. Pelletizing consists of balling fine, moist oxide in a rotating drum, followed by baking at .a temperature below that of incipient fusion to develop a permanent bond within each pellet. The magnetic concentrate from taconite is too fine for good sintering practice but fine enough for good pelletizing practice.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated techniques of using gross alpha or beta detectors to continuously measure working levels. Both methods measure radioactive particulates collected on a filter paper using a constant airflow. Inherent-error studies indicate a value of about ±3 percent for the gross alpha method and about ±8 percent for the beta method in typical mine atmospheres. However, the beta method avoids problems associated with alpha detectors and is therefore more useful. Applications of these continuous working-level detectors include work area monitoring of exposure levels in underground openings, such as mines and caves, and calibrating personal dosimeters exposed over extended time intervals.

No detailed information has been published heretofore on the performance of small industrial-type anthracite stokers in building-heating service, apparently because of the difficulty of comparing the performance of one unit with that of another over an entire season's operation. Studies of competitive heating fuels have been similarly handicapped, and attempts to compare fuels are seldom technically sound in this investigation, the performance of a 60-in. Losch4 stoker burning rice-size anthracite in a standard commercial boiler was observed during a 4-month winter-spring season. It was used to heat two buildings at the Bureau of Mines' Anthracite Research Center at Schuylkill Haven, Pa., with the customary type of automatic pressure-range control. Attendance was limited to inspecting, fuel weighing, data recording, and ash removal. Results were computed daily and grouped by weekly periods to minimize daily irregularities. The same stoker-boiler unit had already been tested in a series of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) test code runs, with the stoker running continuously and with other conditions well stabilized A comparison of results from the code test and the building-heating tests provided information not available in the past for a single stoker unit, assisted in analyzing heat losses not computable in a cyclic operation, and established a basis for evaluating stoker performance in heating service.
