A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (nonentry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) participated in an experiment to facilitate the remote control of dozers used on coal stockpiles. The experiment consisted of supplementing the normal sensory cues an operator requires to manipulate the dozer from a remote location. NIOSH provided and tested a vision systems intended to give the operator the ability to operate the dozer safely and efficiently from a remote position. This paper highlights the genesis of the experiment, identifies the contributions of Consol Energy and Caterpillar, and details the NIOSH efforts and successful test results. A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. "INTRODUCTION Analyses of samples of crude oil from several Texas oil fields have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports, some of which are out of print, but many other analyses of Texas crude oils have not been published. The purpose of this paper is to make available in condensed tabular form under one cover all analyses of the Texas crude oils that have been examined by the Bureau of Mines.DIVISION OF TABLEThe table of analyses is divided into six parts in accordance with the geographic subdivisions of the State. (See fig. 1.) This grouping of the oils corresponds only in a general way with the principal formations in each area from which oil is being produced. In general, the principal oil-producing formations in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas areas are of Permian age; those of North Texas are of Pennsylvanian and older ages; those of the East Texas Basin and of Central Texas are of Cretaceous age; and those of the Texas Gulf Coast are of Eocene and younger ages.For convenience in presentation the name of the geologic age has been assigned to each group of the table although same of the oils included in the group may be of another age.Group 1 includes oils of Permian age produced in the Texas Panhandle area, which comprises the following counties: Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Roberts, Hemphill, Oldham, Potter, Carson, Gray, Wheeler, Deaf Smith, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Collingsworth, Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Briscoe, Ball, and Childress."

The past 40 years have seen the sand and gravel industry grow from small roadside pits and holes in farmers' back yards to giant corporations selling millions of tons of sand and gravel each year and owning plants representing huge capital investments in land and equipment. The days hen a man could "work out" his taxes by providing the materials for nearby roads are gone forever. In addition to the hundreds of privately owned and operated plants, Government agencies operate sand and gravel pits and plants to supply aggregates for the tremendous road-building and public-works programs in progress during the past few years. EXPANDING PRODUCTION In 1940 the send and gravel industry produced almost a quarter of a billion short tons valued at more than 110 million dollars. This compares with less than 2 million short tons worth 1 1/2 million dollars produced in 1902. The practice of screening sand and throwing away the gravel in the early days of the industry's growth has stopped, and in 1940 gravel constituted two-thirds of the total production. A gas-flow retort for thermal processing of oil shale to recover shale oil was developed by the Bureau of Mines at its Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant, Rifle, Colo., from 1948 to 1952. The retort is a crossflow gas-to-broken-solids heat exchanger. The heating medium is the gas produced in the shale retorting process. The gas is heated in specially designed stoves outside the retort and recycled to the retort. Oil shale from the Mahogany ledge section of the Green River formation in northwestern Colorado was the material processed. Indicated maximum oil recoveries for 20-to 25-gallon-per-ton shale in a l2-inch-thick shale bed and a 20-inch bed are 96 and 91 weight-percent of Fischer assay, respectively. Heat requirements for maximum recovery are 600 to 750 B.t.u. per pound of shale. Properties of the recovered shale oil are affected slightly by shale-bed thickness and extent of retorting. Oil recovery from oil shales assaying over 30 gallons per ton is lower than that from leaner shales.

Soapstone is the term applied to an impure, massive, soft rock with a greasy feel. It is of variable composition, consisting chiefly, however, of talc, tremolite, and chlorite. Although limited quantities of soapstone are used as building material, in fireplaces, and in the manufacture of laundry tubs, sinks, laboratory-table tops, and-oven and furnace blocks, the principal part of the production is ground for use in roofing paper, insecticides, and as a filler in asphaltic paints.

[Surveys of the manganese situation conducted by the Geological Survey any other agencies have definitely established the, fact that the tonnage of high-grade manganese or in the United States is relatively small. It is therefore obvious that large-scale production of manganese is possible only through beneficiation of low-grade material. Deposits of low-grade manganese ore are being examined by engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines to determine their size and possibilities as sources of manganese on a tonnage basis. The Metallurgical Division of the Bureau is developing and perfecting beneficiation processes with the objective of utilizing such low-grade ores. Microscopic study of these ores represents one phase of the research.]

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

This is the final report on Project CR-102 under the auspices of the Department of Environmental Resources, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania .1 The project was activated on January 5, 1970, with financial support from Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the Pennsylvania Coal Research Board, and the Water Quality Office of the Environmental Protection Agency (WQO-EPA)2 through Grant 14010 EST to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Work on the project was conducted according to the procedures outlined in BCR Research Program Proposal RPP-164R, dated April 24, 1969, and a subsequent Revulsion of Scope, dated February 25, 1970. This report covers the entire project period from January 5, 1970, through March 25, 1971.

1. Potential groundwater pollution resulting from large-scale surface mining in western states should be evaluated. 2. Criteria should be developed for the design, construction, operation, and abandonment of sediment ponds for maximum removal of suspended solids. 3. Methods should be developed for reducing suspended solids discharges from surface mines to less than 30 milligrams per liter. 4. A manual should be developed in the form of guidelines for sediment and erosion control planning and implementation. These guidelines must be designed to cover all phases of the coal surface mining operation (i.e., before, during and after mining). 5. A mine road manual should be developed for use by surface mine operators and State and Federal Agencies. Erosion, water control, and dust control should be covered in detail. 6. The block-cut, head-of-hollow fill, and mountain-top removal methods and techniques of contour mining should be evaluated, designed, and ultimately demonstrated in steep, mountainous terrain. Designs should be prepared for single and multiple seam applications. The demonstrations must show that these mining systems will secure rapid achievement of reclamation require¬ments and provide maximum, safe, economic coal recovery in an environmentally safe manner. 7. A Blasting Manual should be developed for use by industry and enforcement agencies. Stress should be placed on how to keep vibration levels and air blast pressures well below accepted safe criteria. Also, methods that can be used to control noise should be listed. 8. Investigations should be conducted on the effect of continued vibrations from blasting on structures that are near quarries. 9. Additional guidelines need to be developed for sampling and analysis of overburden material and associated coals for trace elements and noxious strata. Samples are extremely sensitive, and the source and manner of their collection, handling, storage, and treatment, as well as the techniques of analysis, need to be developed and described. This information can be used to predict possible future problems.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of Bureau of Mines investigations of iron ores near Scappoose, Columbia County, Oreg. during 1942, occurrences of laterite were noted in road cuts and outcrops at many localities in the county. In 1944, the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries completed a preliminary examination of alumina-iron-bearing laterite occurrences in Washington County north of Hillsboro, Oreg.3/ Their report suggested that the lateritic material might be amenable to treatment by the Pederson process for the commercial production of iron and alumina. In order to determine the extent and character of some of the reported lateritic occurrences, the Bureau conducted preliminary explorations in Columbia County near St. Helens, Oreg., from January through June 1945. Almost simultaneously the Alcoa Mining Co. began to explore nearby areas. Their work was continued and expanded after the Bureau's work had been discontinued. This report presents the data obtained from the exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral re¬sources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "The eighth National Safety Competition, that for 1932, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, was participated in by 322 mines and quarries operating in 34 States. Tables 2 to 6 show the relative standing of the various plants. Bronze trophies, known as the 'Sentinels of Safety,' which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were awarded to five companies, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, - namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or open-cut mines. The trophies are awarded for one year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituminous-coal mines, which has been in New Mexico for the past year, was won by a mine in West Virginia. The metal-mine trophy goes to New York State for the first time in the history of the contest. Previously it had been won by mines in Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The trophy for nonmetal mines remains for another year at Retsof, N. Y.; that for quarries and open-cut mines is transferred to a quarry in Michigan. The trophy for anthracite mines, of course, remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State.In determining the relative standing of the various companies enrolled in the competition, all mines and quarries were graded according to their accident-severity rates, - that is, according to the number of days of disability of employees on account of accidents in proportion to the number of man-hours of work done by all employees at the plant. Reports of accidents and of man-hours worked were furnished by the companies to the Bureau of Mines. These reports were carefully examined and classified to insure uniform weighting of accidents according to the number of days of disability to be charged and to insure uniformity of methods of calculating the accident-severity rates for the various mines and quarries. When the relative standing of all plants had been determined in this way, a summary of the records of the companies having the lowest accident-severity rates in their respective groups was sent to the members of a committee of award for examination in accordance with the rules governing the safety contest. The members of the committee of award were W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining engineering of Columbia University; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. R. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; and A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association. When two or more mines within the same group operated without an accident during the year, the contest rules provided that the trophy for the group should be awarded to the plant whose record showed the largest number of man-hours worked."

The performance of the world economy improved significantly in 1984. Real world output!/ grew 4.3% (compared with 2.6% in 19831, the highest since the 4.4% increase recorded in 1978 (table 1). The output of industrial nations rose 4.9%, while that of the developing nations rose 3.7%. The United States and Japan had the largest increases in output of the major industrial nations, with respective increases of 6.8% and 5.8% (table 2). The components of real output with the most significant growth in the industrial countries were gross fixed investment (9.2%), consumer expenditure (3.1%), and public consumption (2.5%) (table 1). Industrial output, as measured by industrial production indices, has returned to about the 1980 level for most of the major industrial nations (table 2). Exceptions to this were industrial production in Japan and the United States; Japan's industrial production rose steadily throughout the 5-yr period and is now more than 16% above the 1980 level, and the industrial production index for the United States reached 11 1.2 (1980=100.0). Real total domestic demand grew at 8.7% in the United States, more than double the rate of Japan, which, at 4.0%, had the second-largest growth. Average demand for all industrial countries was up 5.1%. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services and even larger negative net exports of the merchandise sector. While growing U.S. imports helped spread the benefits of the recovery, they also led to a widening of current account imbalances and growing trade tensions throughout the world.3/, 4/

Exploring for additional ore bodies on the property of the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Co.'s property at Idria, Calif., was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. It comprised a study of the geology, mapping, and searching for additional cinnabar by diamond drilling from both surface and underground. Diamond-drill equipment was moved to the project in November 1941, and drilling was completed in.May 1942. Sixteen holes aggregating 2,580 feet were drilled. Diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines developed information regarding ore structures that proved valuable to the operators in planning underground prospecting that led directly to the discovery of high-grade ore.

This report has been prepared by Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, Inc. (LMSC), under United States Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0220040 dated 21 June 1972 for the design, development, fabrication, and certification of the One-Hour Self-Rescue Breathing Apparatus (PBA). The PBA is a self-contained, oxygen-generating, CO2-removing closed-loop breathing apparatus that provides a minimum of 1 hour of breathable atmosphere during escape from a mine with a contaminated or oxygen-deficient atmosphere. This Cost-Plus-Fixed-Fee (CPFF) contract has been successfully completed in a three-phase program. The Phase I tasks included the design, development, and fabrication of prototype units developed at LMSC in accordance with the requirement of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 30, Chapter 1, Subchapter B, Part 11 (Appendix A), and was submitted to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for joint NIOSH and Bureau of Mines certification testing.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for fabricating Sm-Co permanent magnets. This method consisted of arc-melting, crushing and grinding the alloy, alining and pressing the powder, and sintering the green compacts. Results indicated that the optimum composition was 36.7±0.3 weight-percent Sm and 63.3±0.3 weight-percent Co. This composition was obtained by blending together Sm2C07 and SmCo5. The maximum values exper¬imentally obtained were MHC = 27.4 kOe, BHc = 7,510 Oe, Br = 7,810 G, and (BH)max = 15.1 MGOe. The optimum sintering temperatures and grinding times for maximum MHc and (BH)max were determined. Lowering the grinding temperature from 0° C to -60° C resulted in a significant increase of magnetic properties.

In view of the necessity or increasing production of metallurgical fluorspar to satisfy wartime demands, 0, M. Bishop, former district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, L. W. Carrier and. J. S. Williams, senior geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, and E. H. Dawson, mining engineer of the War Production Board made a joint survey of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorite district in July 1942 to determine what steps should be taken to increase production. As part of their recommendations, a program for exploring the idle Klondike mine in Livingston County, Ky., was outlined. All the ore produced at the Klondike mine was mined above the 325-foot level, where some tonnage remains. Factors that influenced selection of the Klondike mine for exploration were favorable geological conditions, the state of mine development and the availability of pumping equipment and some usable mine and mill equipment. In December 1942, the Metals Reserve Co. leased the Klondike mine from the Salem Fluorspar Co.

1. The Pittsburgh is the most important bed in Greene County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 6,011 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 5,967 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
