"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. This Bureau of Mines report presents the design for a commercial-sized flue gas desulfurization (FGD) demonstration plant that uses the citrate process. The goal of the Bureau's citrate process is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts of industrial plants emitting SO2-bearing gas. The FGD plant is located at the George F. Weaton powerplant, Monaca, Pa. Construction was completed in April 1979 and will be followed by preliminary testing and a 1-year testing and evaluation program. Design capacity of the FGD plant is 156,000 scfm of 0.2-volume-percent-SO2 flue gas yielding about 16 tons of sulfur per day. The plant is intended to (1) clean fly ash, SO2, and Cl- from the gas while cooling the gas in a venturi scrubber, (2) absorb SO2 from the gas using 1,200 gpm of a countercurrent-flowing citric acid-sodium citrate-sodium thiosulfate solution, (3) react the absorbed SO2 in two 13,000-gal stirred closed vessels with added H2S, thus precipitating elemental sulfur and regenerating the citrate solution for recycle, and (4) recover the sulfur from the slurry by air flotation, followed by melting in a heat exchanger and separation from the occluded citrate solution in a sulfur decanter at 35 psi and 135° C.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) In-shaft equipment design and specification criteria are considered as they influence guideline preparation. (b) A comprehensive review of hoist electric drives and controls as applied to mine hoists is set forth with special reference to duty cycle calculations and their effect on electrical component selection.

A 1984 Bureau of Mines investigation identified ho mineral resources in the Wilderness Study Area (WSA). However, four prospects in the WSA contain anomalous amounts of copper and silver minerals; one had traces of gold. Stratabound copper-silver occurrences appear to be prevalent. Quartz veins in the WSA locally contain trace gold, and one mine adjacent to the area produced some gold in the late 1800's. The WSA is underlain principally by Precambrian and early to middle Paleozoic quartzites, argillites, dolomites and limestones that have been complicated by faulting, generally tilted northeastward, and thrust southeastward over sequences of late Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The stratabound copper-silver occurrences and gold-quartz veins are in Precambrian and Cambrian rocks in the western part of the WSA, as are similar deposits regionally. Sand and gravel, and limestone are abundant, but plentiful resources of these commodities are nearer established markets. In November 1983 there were 5 small groups of current claims oh the WSA boundary; none are patented claims. Probably less than 35 claims have been located within the WSA, mostly in the northwestern portion; hut over 100 claims have been located outside, near the northwestern boundary. Oil and gas leases nearly surround the boundary and 6 extend up to 1 mile into the study area. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the WSA. From 3 to 5 miles to the west, several lode nines in the Johnnie district have produced several million dollars worth of gold from quartz veins, and some silver and lead from galena-calcite veins. These veins generally trend northeasterly and dip northwesterly and probably do hot extend into the study area.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a continuous-recording methanometer utilizing a catalytic combustion detector. The methanometer, which is presently operating at 22 exhaust fans at 14 mines in the Eastern coalfields, is reliable and simple to install, operate, and maintain. The instrument and the details of its installation and calibration are described. Analytical data obtained by infrared spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph are presented to substantiate its re liability.

The objective of this condensed handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. It will be carried with the inspectors during their surveys. The complete handbook should be left in their offices except for Appendix II which lists the compositions of products found in previous surveys. There are several portions of the condensed handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 9,600 acres of the 12,350-acre Antelope Creek Wilderness Study Area (MT-065-266) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. Within this report, these 9,600 acres are referred to as the study area. The Antelope Creek Wilderness Study Area, Phillips County, MT, adjoins the north end of the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge. Considered part of the Missouri River Breaks, the area straddles the edge of a thrust fault zone that has deformed the Mesozoic strata in the west half of the area. Shale, siltstone, and sandstone of Cretaceous Age are exposed in the area. Coal beds averaging 3.0 ft thick occur in the Judith River Formation. About 0.20 million short tons of coal were mined from the Judith River Formation adjacent to the west boundary of the area; no production is known in the study area.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated Fe-base alloys containing 8 pet Crwith Ni, AI, and Si additions as substitutes for standard AISI Type 304 stainless steel (SS) in high-temperature oxidizing applications. The objective of this study was to reduce the amount of Cr required to make an austenitic stainless steel while retaining satisfactory workability, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance. Alloys prepared in this investigation had a composition of Fe-8Cr-lMn-0.07C with varying amounts of Ni, AI, and Si. A minimum of 10 pet Ni was required to achieve an austenitic composition. The microstructures of the austenitic alloys were very susceptible to room-temperature, deformation-induced martensitic transformations. When the alloys were cold worked or stressed, the materials had far greater tensile strengths than Type 304 SS at room temperature. At higher temperatures, tensile strengths and workability of several of the alloys were comparable to that of Type 304 SS. Although martensitic transformation caused the room-temperature properties of the experimental alloys to be quite different than those of Type 304 SS, the superior oxidation resistance and similar hot workability of several alloys encourage their use as replacements for Type 304 SS.

Using bench-and pilot-scale coking facilities, the Bureau of Mines produced experimental coke from blends of char with Sunnyside coal (high-volatile A bituminous) from Carbon County, Utah. At bench scale, additions of char made from lignite improved resultant cokes when concentrations of up to 60 pct were used in the blends. At pilot scale (500-pound movable-wall oven), four chars made by entrained-bed carbonization techniques from the parent Sunnyside coal and from a North Dakota lignite were used in two-component blends with the Sunnsyide coal. Chars from Sunnyside coal had volatile matter contents of 5.8, 9.8, and 16.0 pct, moisture-free basis; the char from the lignite had 16.6 pct. In twenty-five 500-pound tests, improvement in coke quality was observed from all blends at char concentrations to 17.5 pct. The best coke, produced from a concentration of 12.5 to 15 pct of S.8-pct volatile char, exhibited physical properties approaching those of an industrial coke produced from Sunnyside coal blended with three higher rank blending coals. Studies were also made of the effects on coke quality of char source, of particle size, of comparative use of char and of a blending coal, and of prolonged coal storage.

This publication describes an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines regarding the cause of an explosion of a dephlegmator or fractionating column at the Cities Service Oil Company Refinery, Ponca City, Okla., January 22, 1959. The column was that used with the refinery's No.1 Dubbs Coker. The explosion caused the death of an employee of the refinery and resulted in extensive damage to the refinery and to nearby property. The Bureau's study of the explosion began January 26.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nev., hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten that cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydro-metallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hours, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of Na2C03 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution-to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hours, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 wt-pct W03. The pregnant solution contained 11 g/l W03.

"4.1 IntroductionIn previous chapters impactors have been described as useful instruments for classifying particles by their aerodynamic diameters and for measuring particle size distributions. These impactors can be used most reliably if the user has some understanding as to how the impactor classifies particles and what parameters are important in this classification process. This understanding can best be obtained by a theoretical inspection of inertial principles.This chapter reviews the most recent theoretical impactor work and the latest theoretical efficiency curves. Procedures are then given for using these efficiency curves in the design and evaluation of cascade impactors. Finally, several examples are given comparing theoretical and experimental efficiency curves, pointing out when the theory can be used with great confidence and when the theory should be used only as a guideline.Due to the rather simple principle of operation of an inertial impactor (i.e., the impingement of a jet of particle-laden air on a flat plate) the impactor readily lends itself to theoretical analysis. Three notable works in the early 1950,s were those of Davies and Aylward (1951), Davies et al. (1951), and Ranz and Wong (1952).Davies and Aylward (1951) used a method of conformal mapping to obtain an analytical solution to Euler's equation for the flow of a frictionless fluid through a rectangular impactor. Numerical calculations were then carried out whereby the equations of motion of the particles were solved in a stepwise manner, leading to a determination of the efficiency curves. Since this theory assumed potential flow, the effect of Reynolds numbers on the characteristics of the impactor could not be determined.Ranz and Wong (1952) used an approximate flow field to calculate the efficiency of both round and rectangular nozzle impactors. In the vicinity of the stagnation point, the flow field was assumed to be that of frictionless stagnation flow. Here, the resulting equation of motion for the particles was found to be in a form similar to equations for free vibration with viscous damping. Therefore, the known solutions of the vibration equations were applied directly to the problem and the efficiency curves calculated. This solution technique, however, could not take into account the various geometric variations such as the jet-to-plate distance in the determination of the efficiency curves.The work of Ranz and Wong (1952) was later modified by Mercer and Chow (1968) and Mercer and Stafford (1969) so that the rather simple flow fields of Ranz and Wong (1952) could be used to account for various jet-to-plate distances. The same techniques, however, were used to determine the impactor collection efficiency curves."

Immediately following the capitulation of Germany in World War II, the German State was occupied by various allied forces, who supervised all indus- trial activities in the area. Coal production is vital to the industrial life of Germany, and most of the coal is mined in the American- and British- occupied zones of western Germany. The British-occupied zones include the Aachen and Ruhr districts, from which approximately 90 percent of the coal is obtained. Figure 1 is a map of the Ruhr district. Because of the magni- tude of the task of insuring an adequate supply of coal and the necessity for united action, it was deemed best to reorganize the coal-producing facilities in the British zone undor the joint supervision of American and British authorities. As a result, the UK/US Coal Control Group was established accord- ing to the organization plan indicated in figure 2. Headquarters for the group was established at Essen, in Villa Huegol, the prewar home of the Krupp family (fig. 3). One of the many problems recognized immediately by the UK/US Coal Control Group was the necessity of preventing disasters and reducing accidents to work- men in mines undor military-governmont control. Consequently, the United States Bureau of Mines was requested to furnish the services of qualified men to search for the hazards incident to coal mining and to prepare comprehensive reports on the results of their investigations. The authors, who wore selected for this task, spont about a year in Germany and visited all except a few of the smaller mince. Whereas their principal purpose was to investi- gate safety conditions, somo of the operating conditions and practices also wore studied. The results of the studies and investigations are embodied in this circular with the hope that some useful information will be disseminated to the mining industry of the United States, including supervisory officials, safety directors, engineers, and mine workmon.

The purpose of this research was to determine how much, if any, improvement would be made by subjecting hydrogenated shale-oil naphtha to a catalytic reforming process. Preselected ranges of temperature and pressure within the commercial reforming ranges were chosen for investigation and other possible variables were held constant. All tests were made with a liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 3 volumes of liquid feed per volume of catalyst per hour (Vf/Vc/hr) and a hydrogen feed rate of 3,000 scf/bbl. Operating temperatures of 850°,875°, and 900° F were used at pressures of 200,400, and 600 psig. The greatest octane improvement in the naphtha was obtained at a temperature of 900° F and pressure of 200 psig. The reformed naphtha had a clear research octane number of 89, a liquid yield of 80 vol pct, and a yield-octane number of 71.1. The data indicate that a higher temperature could have produced a higher yield-octane number.

This document describes the development of a conventional mining equipment data base, and an approach for conducting industrial engineering studies of arbitrary mining systems employing network techniques. Data was acquired through underground time studies. Each member of a four-man field team was assigned to a specific machine during each shift for which observations were conducted. Using digital wrist watches and networks describing the man-machine interactions, all events occurring luring the course of each shift were recorded on cassette tapes. The tapes were transcribed, coded, keypunched, and validated using computerized editing techniques. The resulting data files were processed to provide statistics relating to activity durations and event frequencies. The results were used to evaluate operator, machine, and system performance for each section which was observed. Equipment, reliability, and maintainability analyses were conducted using the industrial engineering data files in conjunction with historical information collected at the mine site.

Tests were made at the Government Fuel Yard , operated at Washington , D. C. by the Bureau of Mines , Department of the Interior , in order to determine and improve the adjustment of the carburetors on the trucks used for transporting coal from the Fuel Yard to the different Government buildings in Washington . The tests were made possible through the hearty cooperation of G , S. Pope , engineer in charge of the Fuel Yard . Joseph Burrows and A. E. Foote of the garage department assisted during all the tests and supplied information on the mileage obtained by the trucks for the months preceding and succeding the time the tests were made . The Mack trucks used range in capacity from 2-1/2 to 7-1/2 ttoonnss .. The majority of the carburetors were Stromberg G- 3 type , as shown in Table 2. During the winter months , when the demand for coal is heavy , from 30 to 35 trucks are used . At the time the tests were made , only about ten of the trucks were in daily use , owing to the small demand for coal during the summer months , and scarcity due to labor conditions . Samples of the exhaust gas were taken on the trucks kept in service for summer hauling in order to determine the carburetor adjustment as used . Changes were then made to a more economical adjustment wherever possible , without sacrificing flexibility of operation and power . In every case the adjustments were maintained for maximum power , but were adjusted to the leanest position to give that power . In all but one case the carburetors were found to be adjusted too rich for maximum power and economy . These results are considered in detail in a later part of this report .

The Bureau of Mines investigated a method for increasing the leaching rate of bulk superalloy scrap to facilitate recycling and recovery of critical metals such as Ni, Co, and Cr. Three superalloys were investi- gated, the cast-nickel-base superalloy IN-738, the wrought-nickel-base superalloy Rene-41, and the cast-cobalt-base superalloy Mar-M-509. Superalloys melted with 20, 30, 40, and 50 pct Al metal to form inter- metallic compounds were easily crushed to a convenient particle size and reacted rapidly with acid solutions which dissolved the metals. For example, leaching 1/2-in pieces of unalloyed IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dissolved about 0.5 pct, while leaching 10 g of minus 20-mesh 30 pct Al-70 pct IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dis- solved 96.2 pct.
