This preliminary paper is intended to answer briefly some of the inquiries coning to the Bureau of Mines regarding the so-called "paraffining", of oil wells and methods of preventing and remedying that trouble. The increased difficulties in operation and the losses of production caused by the deposition of gummy and waxy hydrocarbons, commonly called paraffin, in the wells, tubing, other pumping equipment, and in the pores of the productive sands, have long been recognized but the trouble has not been overcome. The nature and causes of the trouble, together with some of the possible methods by which it may be diminished or overcome, are outlined below. Character of the Peraffining Materials. The so-called paraffin that collects in oil wells end in the pores of the oil-producing sands immediately around the wells, is generally made up of amorphous wax or uncracked paraffin, asphalt, or other gummy hydrocarbons mixed with more or lees water, oil, and inorganic silt. Some of the samples of this "paraffin" collected from oil wells in different fields and examined by the Bureau of Mines contain as mach as 20 per cent by weight of water and inorganic silt, whereas other samples are composed entirely of waxy hydrocarbons and oil. The inorganic silt accompanying this "paraffin" is mostly fine sand, clayey materials, common salt and finely disseminated precipitates of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Sulphates of calcium, barium, and strontium are less common constituents of the "paraffin."

"Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (non-entry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. Prolonged exposure to noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components, known as noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is the most common occupational disease in the United States today. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is addressing NIHL in the mining industry through several research efforts. This paper presents a general review of NIHL, the status of NIHL in mining, the results of the longwall noise surveys, and a review of the longwall engineering controls research efforts.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Recent employment figures (taken from the Mine Safety and Health Administration&apos;s database) indicate that the number of independent contractor&apos; employees working in the coal mining industry has doubled over the past ten years. As their numbers increase, they become a more visible segment of the industry. [ ] Increased exposure to mining hazards has also brought an increase in the number of fatalities involving independent contractor workers. One gauge that is traditionally used to evaluate the overall safety of an entity is the "number of fatalities." Over the five-year period from 1985-89, 27 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on coal mine property. This number increased to 45 fatalities during the subsequent five-year period from 1990-94. Nearly half of these fatalities (47%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage (See Table); 13% were electrical accidents; and 9% were machinery accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 69% of all coal nine independent contractor fatalities. Information taken from fatality data is an important piece of the safety puzzle; however, other variables need to he examined in order to better define contributing factors associated with accidents. More specifically, information on trends in fatal and nonfatal accident and injury data is necessary before deciding what approach should be used to improve safety. In order to implement appropriate safety strategies, it is important for safety practitioners to examine all available lost time accident and injury information. The following coal industry data sites specific and present trends of independent contractor employees working in underground locations at coal mines, surface areas of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and preparation plants. The data compares employment and accidents for time periods at the beginning and the end of a ten-year span from 1985 to 1994. Because the number of incidents involving independent contractors in certain accident categories during any one year may be small, three-year totals are used; the first three years (1985-87) of the ten-year period are compared with the last three years (1992-94). "Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

"INTRODUCTION Organizations formed for the purpose of conducting conservation work in oil fields, in order to conserve and prolong the supply of crude petroleum are rare and novel. Such an organization is the Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Denver, Colo, As our production of petroleum can no longer keep with the consumption, the plan of organization, character of work, and results obtained by this association are well worth considering. It is hoped that the results achieved in the Wyoming fields will serve to stimulate similar organizations among operators in the state or other oil fields of the United States, The Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Danvers Colo., was formed in May, 1919. It comprises the Midwest Refining Co,. The Ohio Oil Co., and the Continental Oil Co. These three companies entered into a cooperative agree¬ment with the Federal Bureau of Mines whereby $30,000 would be spent under the direction of the bureau, which agreed to furnish competent men, and to furnish the work and expenditure of funds. Although the financial burden for the first year's work, now drawing o a close, was carried by only three companies, they stipulated their desire that the benefit of the work should accrue to the industry, and that the personnel employed should be as zealous to assist one operator as another, without regard to whether ha was contributing to the support of the work or not."

"A relationship exists between the quartz contents in the underground coal nine airborne dust samples and those in the coal and host rocks that are mined [17, 18, 19] The prescribed method for quartz analysis in respirable airborne coal dust samples is the MSHA P-7 method. Accurate quartz analysis procedures are needed for bulk samples in order to predict the potential quartz content in airborne nine dust, which in turn will aid the design of quartz dust control procedures during mining. thereby reducing the airborne quartz dust in underground atmospheres. The requirements of this method are that the amount of quartz is the sample be less than 250ug, and the total sample weight less than 2,500 ug. Unlike with airborne dust samples, there are no limitations to the available mass of bulk samples. However, these are no standard procedures for the preparation of bulk samples for scanning or prescribed methods for quartz analysis. The NIOSH and MSHA methods are certified for roped* dust and the acceptance of these methods for bulk samples assumes that the bulk samples will be reduced to the conditions specified for respirable dust samples. An alternative method is X-ray diffraction, which provides higher average quartz values than those obtained from P-7 method for the same samples.An investigation was carried out to determine the optimal procedure for preparing the bulk samples for the IR and XRD analyses. In this paper, the investigations on the effects of calibration, particle sizes, matrix composition, interferrous, and behavior of the filter substances on IR, XRD and FTIR results are presented. The error introduced by the presence of kaolinite and a new sample asking procedure to reduce it are discussed. The problems experienced with conventional sample holders for scanning were eliminated with the design and development of a new hollow sample holder. Quantitative comparison of quartz determinations by IR, XRD and MR methods on coal, roof and floor rocks, and airborne dust samples are presented. The important factors affecting the results of quartz analysis methods are: 1) bulk sample preparation for obtaining representative and homogeneous analysis samples: 2) particle size distributions of the analysis samples and calibration standards; 3) qualitative matrix composition of the analysis sample; 4) matching calibration standards to analysis sample; 5) substrates for sample deposition during analysis sample preparation; 6) procedures for analysis sample mounting; 7) selection of proper portions of she response profile for insanity measurement; and 8) interferences of spurious phases with the critical analyses. The recommendations of this study are important to enable comparisons and interpretations of analysis and research results."

This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analy- ses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the per- sons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have been furnished by the collectors themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness of detail. The descriptions are published for two purposes: (1) To prosent such information regarding the character of the coal, the impurities in the beds sampled, and the nature of the roof and the floor of the beds as has a definite bearing on the significance of the analyses of the samples, and (2) to give any supplementary details such as the capacity or the output of a mine, the method of mining and prepar- ing the coal, and the chief uses to which it is put, that may be of assistance to Government engineers or purchasing agents, and to other persons, in preparing specifications and awarding contracts for fuel.

This report presents the results of preliminary studies for the evaluation of some fused-salt electrolytes for refining tungsten metal, and describes the equipment used. Some impurities could be eliminated with electrolytes composed of sodium chloride, sodium iodide, or sodium tetraborate in combination with tungstic oxide or sodium tungstate. Electrolytes composed entirely of chlorides were unusable because of the volatility of tungsten chloride. Refining 96-to 98-percent tungsten to produce a commercial grade was more successful than further refining of 99.9-percent tungsten. No electrolyte tested yielded a product pure in all respects. Electrolyte temperatures of about 900° C were necessary to maintain a good dissolution rate at the anode and acceptable cell operation. Cathode current densities at the beginning of a deposition cycle were limited to approximately 1 ampere per square inch. Higher current densities resulted in a finely divided product that frequently failed to adhere to the cathode. The most conspicuous impurities in the tungsten produced were carbon, iron, and molybdenum; the former two came from the iron cell and the graphite cell liner. Electrolytes com-posed of tungstic oxide or sodium tungstate in sodium iodide, or 2Na, 0.B203, were capable of producing tungsten carbide.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on 138 waterflood projects in Wyoming. Injection was in 25 producing zones and 65 fields. Specific data presented include field location, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. The 138 projects studied will, if successful, recover about 800 million barrels of secondary oil. Almost all of the injection water is from deep water wells.

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

Provide an inexpensive, remote actuated, stench-gas system which reduces fire warning time to underground work locations. Approach A mine&apos;s pager phone hard-wire network is used to release stench gas from pressurized canisters located near working areas. The release is initiated by placing a coded message into a control phone at some central location. How It Works Currently, in most mines, the decision to release a warning stench gas is made by mine management after communication from the mine of a fire or similar potentially dangerous situation. Stench gas is then released into the ventilation air and/or compressed air lines for dissemination throughout the mine. This can result in significant delays in warning time. Often, surface personnel must travel to distant shafts, or other release points, wasting valuable time. Also, the time for ventilation air to circulate from the surface to working locations can be long and the effectiveness of compressed air as a stench transport agent depends on whether the compressed air is being used at the face. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with MSA Research Corporation, has designed and tested a warning system which avoids these problems. The system consists of multiple, pressurized stench-gas canisters located under-ground in the mine-ventilation network so as to provide quick dissemination of the released stench gas to working areas. Each stench-gas canister is hard-wire connected to a nearby pager phone and from there to a control phone at the surface or at a central in-mine site. In the event of a mine emergency, the canisters are activitated to release stench gas by placing a coded message into the control phone. A low amperage Signal sent from the control phone to the receiver phone closes a relay, which activates a release mechanism on the canister.

Sudden, violent failures of rock around mine openings influence access, ventilation, and safety in both hard-rock and coal mines. To develop predictive tools for assessing the potential for violent failure, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using (1) multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses of geological and mining conditions at 25 sites to identify the most significant factors contributing to stress bumps in coal mines and (2) investigations of the geological and mining factors contributing to rock bursts in the Coeur d&apos;Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, particularly the influence of preexisting structures on rock bursts. Twenty-five factors were initially considered in the study of coal bumps. The most important variables were identified as (1) mechanical properties of strata, (2) gate road geometry and/or gate pillar factors of safety, (3) roof beam thickness, joint spacing, and stiffness characteristics, and (4) stress gradients associated with previous mining and anomalous geologic conditions. In the Coeur d&apos;Alene district, burst damage related to preexisting structures results primarily from (1) sudden buckling and crushing of rock layers where surfaces of development and production openings lie at low angles to bedding, faults, or other planar structures and (2) disturbance of loose ground caused by seismic fault-slip on preexisting faults or previously sheared bedding planes that intersect veins near pillar-stope margins.

Sponge iron is the metallic product resulting from the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at a temperature below the fusion point of iron. It has been used for many years in the production of certain grades of high-quality steel, such as tool and cutlery steels. The sponge iron available commercially in limited quantities for such use was produced from high-grade ores that were almost free from the contaminating elements that are generally considered detrimental to the production of certain grades of carbon tool steel. Interest in sponge iron as a scrap substitute was revived when World War II began, when the serious shortage of scrap metals for use in the production of armament caused great concern as to whether steel production could be maintained at the rate necessary for vigorous prosecution of the war effort. Tests were conducted in commercial foundries to determine the suitability of calcined anthracite as a cupola fuel. The calcined anthracite performed satisfactorily at two of the three foundries where iron-melting tests were conducted. Performance at the third installation was unsatisfactory because metal temperatures deviated widely and, in general, were lower than is desirable for the type of castings being made.

[Subbituminous coal or lignite when stored in random piles or in ordinary bins in which the temperature fluctuates and air circulates quickly undergoes objectionable physical and chemical changes, which decrease the utilization value of the fuel and increase its tendency to ignite spontaneously. Slacking takes place, and the heating value decreases. These changes are accelerated by fluctuations of temperature and by circulation of air through the storage space. When such coals are exposed to the weather they lose moisture rapidly. If evaporation from the surface of a lump proceeds at a faster rate than that at which it is replaced by moisture from the interior, the rate of shrinkage at the surface is greater than that at the interior; consequently, stresses are generated at the surface which cause the coal to disintegrate. Likewise, when moisture is absorbed by the air-dried surface the outside layers expand at a faster rate than the interior, which results in further break-down. As these cycles are repeated the lump may disintegrate completely. Therefore, successful storage of low-rank coals depends on control of the factors that influence change of moisture.]

A skull breaker has demonstrated its advantages for secondary breaking in a limestone quarry by entirely displacing secondary blasting . It has reduced safety hazards to workmen, increased the number of quarry operating days , and has lowered mining costs by 2.7 cents a ton. It is believed that the application of the skull breaker can be made economically advantageous in the surface mining of other commoditics .
