Tin deposits in Catron County, New Mexico, were explored by the Bureau of Mines under authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of August 1939. The investigation covered both lode and placer deposits and was later extended to deposits in Sierra County. Six of the known deposits were examined by E. D. Gardner, supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, and S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, in June and July 1939. It was recommended that the more promising occurrences be explored by test pitting, trenching, and sampling. Field work, under supervision of M. E. Volin, began in September and continued through December 1939. The area was mapped by Carl Fries, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1939 and 1940. The La Cruz Development Co. acquired control of the Squaw Creek placer claims in 1942 and began active sampling and development preliminary to large-scale operations. The result of this work showed a considerably higher tin content than that found by the Bureau of Mines in 1939. Because of this report and reports from other parts of the district that large-scale operations for the production of tin from lode deposits were possible, it was recommended that the Bureau of Mines resample parts of Squaw Creek and conduct a mill test of lode material to determine whether a concentrate could be made that was high enough in tin and low enough in iron to be acceptable in American smelting practice. This work, under the supervision of Paul L. Russell, was begun in November 1942 and completed in January 1943, during which time the Sierra Metals Co. acquired control of a large area in Sawmill Canyon. At the suggestion of the Federal Geological Survey and the War Production Board, which had reason to believe that a great deal of commercial material existed on certain flatlands and gully slopes, the project was extended to include test pitting and sampling of those areas. The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.

Much has been written and many discussions have been held concerning the prevention of accidents in coal mines , and considerable progress has been made in eliminating hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen . Although much progress has been made in the reduction of injury rates in the Pennsylvania anthracite field , the injury rates for the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are generally higher than the average for coal mines in the United States as a whole , because the mining conditions , including the safety problems , in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields are more complex than in other coal fields of the United States . Several factors contribute to this extremely difficult problem , among which are : Multiple - vein mining , steeply pitching measures , folds or faults , hard smooth floors underneath the veins , and the remining or reclaiming of pillars in severely crushed , broken ground . In the early days of the Pennsylvania anthracite industry , only the more productive veins were mined , and this resulted in bypassing those veins that were relatively thin and those containing considerable proportions of impurities . However , the development of modern coal - preparation equipment , improved marketing conditions , and the adoption of mechanical equipment , such as the various types of conveyors and scraper loaders , have made possible the recovery of the thinner and poorer veins . Furthermore , in the early days , little or no attempt was made to recover the coal pillars , usually owing to the great amount of virgin coal available . Consequently , much of the anthracite produced within the last few years has been recovered by second and third mining and frequently by fourth mining - in areas where operations had been suspended for many years . In such areas , the coal veins and intervening strata are usually crushed as the result of gradual subsidence , which intensifies the hazards incidental to roof control , haulage , ventilation , and mine gases . Moreover , the use of coal - cutting equipment is not practicable in most anthracite mines because of. the inclination of the veins and because , in crushed -ground areas , the faces must be advanced slowly and for short distances at a time to permit the erection of timber sets and the placing of forepoles to support the roof and sides . Thus , the slow process of mining brought about by these conditions has resulted in the production of only 0.424 ton of anthracite for each man- hour worked , as compared with 0.753 ton? for each man - hour worked at other coal mines in the United States . A summary contained in Bulletin 462,8/ a publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines , reveals that the rate of fatal injuries in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry was improved from 13.47 deaths per million tons produced in 1870 to 3.88 deaths per million tons mined in 1942. During the period March 16 , 1942 to January 1 , 1947 , the fatality rate was reduced from 3.88 to 2.87 deaths for each million tons mined . On the million man-hour basis , the rate of fatal injuries was reduced from 1.643 to 1.130 and the nonfatalinjury rate was lowered from 119.01 to 83.12 during the same period . The improvements made in both the fatal- and nonfatal - injury rates have required the cooperation of the workmen , the mining companies , and the State and Federal inspection departments . Many individual mines and companies have achieved commendable safety records which contributed greatly to the over - all average for the industry , particularly during the 1942-47 period . One of the most outstanding of these is the Continental mine of the Continental -Archbald Coal Co. , a member of the Moffat Co. Interests .

In investigating general problems that relate to the fuel resources of this country, and in testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has given considerable attention to the efficiency and economic value of producer-gas power plants. Government inquiries during the past eight years not only have shown a very low fuel consumption per horsepower-hour for these plants but have demonstrated conclusively the possibility of utilizing commer- cially low grades of bituminous coal, lignite, and peat in plants prop- erly designed for the use of these fuels. The anthracite plant has been recognized as a commercial possibility for several years, although the cost of the fuel used has in general restricted these plants to com- paratively small units. The commercial development of the producer-gas power plant in the United States has been largely within the past six or eight years. In 1909 the United States Geological Survey published in a bulletin entitled "Recent Development of the Producer-Gas Power Plant in the United States" a list of producer-gas power-plant installations. The data presented in that bulletin showed a strong development in this field and led to much conjecture as to the future of this type of power. Owing to the extensive introduction of the steam turbine, however, many persons predicted the almost immediate doom of the producer-gas plant. In addition to the inroads made by this formida- ble rival, the interest of the gas-engine enthusiasts became centered to such an extent in the oil engine that the gas producer was relegated to second place by many and absolutely abandoned by some. During the past three years the belief of many who were formerly firm be- lievers in the gas producer has been that this type of power has reached its height of development in this country and that from a commercial standpoint it can no longer be regarded as a complete success. "Inhalation of certain forms of silica, asbestos and some other respirable dusts can result in pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by destruction of the surfaces of alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa decreases the lung's capacity for gas exchange.Pulmonary macrophage damage by respired dust may initiate the fibrotic response.In one proposed mechanism, dust particles interact with the plasma membrane of a macrophage. This damages the cell or induces some hyperactivity of the cell, resulting in excessive release of lysosomal enzymes and reactive forms of oxygen (1). These reactive enzymes or radicals then damage the alveolar surface epithelial cells. A second mechanism has also been pro¬posed (2,3) in which dust damage to the macrophage causes the release of mediator substances which induce pulmonary fibroblast cell proliferation and increased collagen synthesis. This produces fibrous tissue in the terminal air spaces (4,5).Mineral surface interactions with plasma membrane lipoproteins have been proposed as a mechanism of lytic damage of pulmonary cells by silica dust in numerous models (6,7). The significance of dust surface proper¬ties has been further revealed in studies showing significant changes in dust induced cytotoxicity as a function of dust surface crystallinity and organic or inorganic contamination or coating of mineral surfaces (8,9). Such modification of the mineral surface might interfere with surface sites responsible for the toxicity of dusts for pulmonary macrophages, thus interrupting the early stages of the process of fibrosis.In vitro cellular assay systems using erythrocyte hemolysis or the release of macrophage cytosolic or lysosomal enzymes following dust challenge, have been used to analyze the initial mechanism of dust damage to cells. However the ability of these assays to predict the pulmonary disease producing potential of various dusts is imperfect owing to some ""false positive"" results. These assays as performed are therefore questionable models for the initial lesion in pneumoconiosis or silicosis. In particular, kaolin frequently is found to have comparable biological activity to silica quartz in these assays (10,11).Silica and kaolin have distinctly different fibrogenic potentials. Silica is highly fibrogenic, resulting in both acute and chronic silicosis (12). Some epidemiological data and animal experimentation data have indicated that long term exposure to kaolin can result in pneumoconiosis; however, kaolin is relatively benign as compared to silica (13-18). Kaolin is also of interest because it is one of the major mineral inclusions in Eastern U.S. bituminous coals. We have observed that exposing respirable sized native silica or kaolin for two hours to pulmonary macrophages results in a greater enzyme release for kaolin exposures, on a dust mass basis. Exposure of erythrocytes to the dusts also results in greater levels of hemolysis by kaolin for equal mass respirable dust doses. Therefore, these results do not correlate positively with known disease inducing potentials of the two dusts.Characterization of physical and chemical surface properties of dusts involved in occupational exposures, and characterization of the alteration of those surface properties which are likely to occur upon deposition of the dust in the lung, should improve the identification of respiratory disease hazards.Inhaled dust particles deposited in the lower respiratory tract will come in contact with pulmonary surfactant. This surfactant forms a surface film on and emulsion in the liquid hypophase coating of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. The primary constituent of this pulmonary surfactant is the lipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, lecithin (19). Because this lipid is also a major component of cell membranes, it is possible that surfactant can interact with mineral dust to alter its Interaction with macrophages and other pulmonary cells and, thus, it"

According to reports as of January 1, 1931, the total daily charging capacity of the cracking plants, hoth completed and under construction, in the United States amounted to 1,950,781 "barrels, an increase over the previous year of 14 per cent. The total daily capacity of the operating plants amounted to 1,594,990 "barrels, or 82 per cent of the grand total, the capacity of the in¬ operative plants was 244,661 "barrels, or 12 per cent of the total, while the capacity of the plants under construction amounted to 111,130 "barrels, or 6 per cent. In comparison with a year ago, these data indicate a decline in the total capacity of the plants "being "built "but show material increases in the capacity of "both the other two classes. The increase in total inoperative capacity and the decline in construction in 1930 undoubtedly resulted from un¬ satisfactory economic conditions. The total number of cracking units completed or under construction on January 1, 1931, totaled 1,863 as compared with 2,002 the previous year and with a high of 2,559 on June 1, 1926. During the period between June 1, 1926, and January 1, 1931, the total charging capacity of the cracking plants has more than doubled, but the number of units has shown a material decline. This condi¬ tion has been brought about largely through the dismantling of many Burton still of small capacity and through the tendency to increase the size of the new units The "largest unit that can be identified in this survey has a daily charging capacity of 10,000 barrels, but undoubtedly there are some that would exceed this in size. Texas, with a total of 575,300 barrels, ranked far ahead of the other States in charging capacity, and was followed in order by California, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Indiana, with only five refineries, ranked third in cracking capacity, which illustrates the importance of the Chicago district as a gasoline-producing center. Not all of the States showed a gain in capacity during the year; in fact, four of them, namely Illinois, Louisiana, New York, and Oklahoma, reported a decline.

A primary objective of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act is to establish uniform national regulatory standards to protect the environment during mining and for reclaiming land after it is disturbed by current and future surface coal mining. In recognition of the wide range of climatic and geologic conditions in coal-producing areas, Congress provided that individual states may establish their own programs for regulating surface and underground coal mining and reclamation on private land. The standards for state programs must be at least as effective as the federal standards. Initial and Permanent Regulatory Programs Congress recognized the importance of establishing regulations to implement the Act as quickly as possible, while recognizing that the preparation of such complex regulations would be a lengthy process. Consequently, a two-phase schedule was established. An abbreviated initial program was put in place immediately, followed by a more extensive and detailed permanent regulatory program. The initial program regulations were published in December 1977, and mine permits issued by states after February 1978 were required to conform with those regulations. Regulatory provisions contained in the initial program included 12 basic performance standards, continuation of existing state permitting, bonding, and enforcement processes (although if those features did not already exist, they did not have to be added), a federal inspection frequency of once every six months, joint state and federal inspection and enforcement in states that had existing programs, and the prohibition of mining in the specific areas listed in the Act. Permanent program regulations were published in March 1979, following extensive review and comment from the public, including the coal industry and organized environmental groups. The regula¬tory provisions in the permanent program expanded those in the interim program by including the implementation of all performance standards contained in SMCRA, a new permitting process, a requirement for performance bonds, an increased inspection frequency (one per month), a new enforcement process, and a process for designating lands unsuitable for surface mining. The regulations for the permanent program have been revised several times since 1979; more revisions can be made as new mining and reclamation tech¬niques are developed. Such changes were anticipated by Congress; in fact, a provision in SMCRA for experimental practices encourages advances in mining and reclamation techniques.

As part of the continuing effort by the Bureau of Mines to promote mine safety, research work is being conducted at the Experimental coal mine, Bruceton, Pa., on the prevention of coal-mine explosions and on other mine-safety problems. The principal subjects studied during the past 2 years are briefly described in this paper. Although at present these problems are relevant particularly to the mine layout and to high-speed mining practices in numerous American coal mines, it is hoped that the findings will prove interesting and useful also to our European research colleagues. Some of the investigations treated here will be presented in greater detail in forthcoming Bureau of Mines reports. 1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF COAL CUTTINGS The seams in mist American bituminous-coal mines are undercut, shear-cut, or top-cut before blasting. The cuttings arc generally loaded out with the balance of the coal. However, in some mines it is not economical to load and remove cuttings from the mine. This applies especially if the cut section of the seam is of appreciably lower grade than the rest of the coal, or if the cut is made partly into an adjacent stratum that is high in incombustible content. In such mines the cuttings are sometimes stored in random heaps in rooms or other areas, along the ribs of mine entries, or in layers on the floor of rooms or entries.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated prospects and mineralized areas in and adjacent to the Indian Pass and Picacho Peak study areas in 1983 and 1984. The Indian Pass study area contains 33,640 acres and the Picacho Peak study area contains 5,450 acres. The study areas are located in the southeast corner of California and are underlain by Precambrian gneiss, Pre-Tertiary metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and non-marine clastic rocks. Low-grade gold-silver resources may be present in hydrothermally altered gneiss in the upper plate and altered schist in the lower plate of the Chocolate Mountain thrust fault. The thrust fault is exposed in the study areas for about 3.5 miles west and 5 miles east of Indian Pass. Mineralized zones in the thrust plates were not discovered until 1983. Earlier prospecting explored areas containing minor copper carbonate occurrences in schist and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are younger than the thrust. Twenty-three mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences inside the study areas and fourteen outs; de were examined for this study. These surficial copper occurrences have been prospected extensively in the study areas; large areas have been scraped, pitted, and trenched by bulldozers. However, they appear to be of limited economic significance. Slightly mineralized zones are in the northwest part of the Indian Pass study area where granite contacts sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

The West Tintic mining district is located at the southern end of the Sheeprock Range in Juab County, Utah (fig. 1). Scheelite was discovered in the area during 1940, and the Desert Tungsten Co. began mining in May 1942. The ore was shipped to the Metals Reserve Co. chemical treatment plant at Salt Lake City during the war. A Bureau of Mines development project was established on property controlled by the Desert Tungsten Co. Work was started during September 1942 and completed in February 1943. The program included removal of overburden in the mine area to facilitate geologic napping, followed by surface trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling (figs. 2,. 3, 4, and 5). Eleven diamond-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were drilled from the surface. Sixty-one samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes were assayed. The logs of the holes are given in table 2. Assay results of samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes are listed in tables 1 and 3. Geologists of the U.S. Geological Survey mapped the mineralized area during the project period. The scheelite deposits occur in limestone areas adjacent to intrusive m9.sses, which are principally monzonite. The ore bodies are pyrometasomatic in origin, but consist of two somewhat different types: (1) a series of veins occupying fault zones in limestone and (2) tactite bodies immediately adjacent to the limestone. The veins in the limestone have been the most productive of the two types.

"The major thrust of this research is directed towards a better undstanding of the behavior of airborne dust particles in underground mine airways. Figure 61 shows a schematic of dust flow in mine airway. The work included development of a mathematical model of dust behavior in mine airways, experimental study of the behavior of dust clouds and comparison of computer model output and experimental results. Re-entraiment is a secondary source of dust in mine airways and factors affecting re-entrainment are being identified.Investigations have encompassed both experimental and theoretical research into the behavior of dust in mine airways. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions (Figure 62). The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and desposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aerosol monitors (RAM-1) (Figure 63).On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. Comparative analyses of results of the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model were carried out. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion were examined in light of the experimental observations."

The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian tribe in the United States and occupies a reservation encompassing about 16 million acres in northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico, with three satellite reservations in western and west-central New Mexico. Coal mining is conducted on a commercial scale at four large surface mines: two are in northeastern Arizona and the other two are in western and northwestern New Mexico. The principal coal-bearing region in Arizona is the Black Mesa coal field, which underlies about 3,200 square miles in the northeastern part of the state. The Black Mesa coal field lies within the boundaries of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations and makes a significant contribution to the economies of both tribes. Coal reserves in this field are estimated to be 352 million tons, less than one-tenth of one percent of U.S. coal reserves. This coal was first mined by prehistoric Indians as fuel for cooking and heating. It has been estimated that the Indians removed more than 100,000 tons between 1300 and 1600 A.D. The coal-bearing region of the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico is located in the San Juan Basin. The Navajo Mine, which supplies coal for the Four Comers Power Plant, is located in this area. The Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Navajo land. The Navajo Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved May 16,1988.

Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978. Domestic consumption of aluminum metal from imported Guinean alumina continued. to grow; thus exports of this metal to France (valued at $2 million in 1978) and Japan

The characteristics of gas-phase detonations were observed in 20 instrumented firings within earthen tunnels, in 100 such detonations in a 24-in-diam by l63-ft-long steel pipe, and in about 200 smaller scale firings. Most of the fuels studied were representative hydrocarbons--acetylene, propane, gasoline, and a roughly equimolar mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene, and propane. In a pipe with two closed ends, the detonable limits were demonstrated to be very nearly the same as reported limits of flammability. The side-on impulses (pressures integrated over 200-msec intervals) were shown to be the same function of concentration regardless of whether deflagration or detonation had occurred. In a pipe with only the initiation end closed, the impulses of all fuel-air systems tended toward the same level when averaged over comparable ranges of fuel concentration; the lower pressures with saturated hydrocarbons were nearly compensated by longer durations of pressure transient. In all fuel-air systems, unexpectedly high impulses were obtained with slightly lean mixtures. In earthen confining structures, the impulse, of the explosion was efficiently converted into momentum of the failing wall. In the configurations studied, an earth velocity of about 20 fps was critical to overcome the soil's resistance to shear. The destructive effect was determined by gas pressure rather than by total energy release. The assignment of a "TNT equivalent" to an explosive gas mixture is discussed in terms of the confinement of the mixture.

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, Be well as the amount of available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Harlan County, Ky., for coking tests was based, in part, on recent studies of coal reserves by Wallace,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in tons, as follows:

This paper describes measured data on strata behavior obtained in recent years from sites in the United Kingdom and the implications for pillar design. The data include results from overcoring stress measurements adjacent to coal mine roadways and deformation monitoring related to longwall extraction. The stresses adjacent to mine roadways or entries have been measured at a number of coal mine sites in the United Kingdom. The results are analyzed with regard to the information they provide on pillar behavior and strength estimates. A reduction in stress consistent with yielding of the strata adjacent to the roadways is evident. This is consistent with the confined core model for pillar behavior. The pillar strength is dependent on the rate atwhich vertical stress can increase with distance from the pillar edge and hence the confinement provided to the yielded material. The measured data indicate a wide range in pillar strengths. Two groups of results are identified that show significantly different behavior corresponding to differing effective pillar strengths. Estimates of pillar strengths derived from the measured data for these two groups are compared with established equations used for pillar design. The differing behaviors and strengths are attributed to variations in the amount of yielding and deformation in roof and floor strata and hence in the amount of confinement they provide to the coal seam. Numerical modeling is used to provide a comparison with the measured data and to indicate that this provides a feasible mechanism to account for the measured data. As the depth of mining increases, pillars tend to become increasingly wide and squat. In such cases, it is possible for the surrounding roadways to become badly deformed and damaged while the pillars remain stable. The criteria of comparing pillar strengths and loads to establish pillar stability become less applicable in these circumstances; rather, considerations of roadway stability may be the limiting factor in determining suitable pillar dimensions. This is the case for pillar dimensions typically employed around longwall panels in the United Kingdom. Depending on the properties of the site and what are deemed to be satisfactory roadway conditions, this can lead to wide variations in required pillar dimensions. Measured data for deformations in roadways influenced by adjoining longwall workings are presented. These show that in some circumstances the influence of longwall extraction can be transmitted over large distances and confirm the variability in required pillar sizes depending on site properties.

The continued worldwide shortage and strategic value of nickel place great importance upon the continued development and exploitation of new sources of nickel in the United States, The deposits of nickel-bearing minerals in Oregon and Washington have attracted considerable attention, particularly since the Hanna Development Co. has engaged in development work aimed at producing ferronickel from the Nickel Mountain deposit, near Riddle, Douglas County, Greg. The Red Flats nickel deposit in Curry County, Oreg., was first examined by the Bureau of Mines in dune 1945, but it was not until 1952 that the deposit was drilled and sampled. In 1953, a 15-ton sample of Red Flats material was procured and subjected to continuous smelting tests in the Bureau's Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Greg.
