To determine the copper and nickel content of reported ore occurrences in the Chippewa mine near Rockmont, Douglas County, Wis., the Bureau of Mines reopened and sampled the old shaft and workings during the summer and fall of 1953. Occurrences of native copper near Rockmont and others near Gordon, also in Douglas County, Wis., are in lava flows, which extend from the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan southwest across Wisconsin and into Minnesota. Sporadic attempts have been made to find additional economic copper deposits in these flows since profitable mines were developed in Upper Michigan nearly 100 years ago. The Rockmont and Gordon areas were explored extensively more than 50 years ago. More recently, from August 1944 to duly 1945, an occurrence near Gordon was investigated by the Bureau.2/

The mining ordinance of Costa Rica dates from 1830. In spite of the numerous attempts to enact a new ordinance , it has been so much amended and reamended during the hundred years of its existence either expressly or , more often , by implication , and sometimes by Executive Decrees of which the validity has been called in question - that in most cases no one but a lawyer thoroughly conversant with Costa Rican mining practice could properly advise with reference to it . The present attempt at a digest of these laws is based on the 1929 edition of Bolandi and Johanning - the only source available in Washington . Apparently this edition has no official character , and the editors themselves often made surmises although one would think that definite facts would be available in Costa Rica where it was published .

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 5,100 acre (2,065 ha) Rubicon RARE II area (No. 5026) in the El Dorado National Forest (fig. 1). Work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for mineral resources in the area is low. Samples from small gravel deposits along the Rubicon River and from favorable structures in the area contained smart amounts of economic minerals. A Tertiary river channel near the north area boundary contains gold values as much as $137.60 per cu yd ($180 per cu m) [(gold at $400 per troy oz ($12.86 per g)]. The channel does not cross the study area. Energy resource potential, including oil, gas, or geothermal, does not exist in this geologic environment.

The United States Bureau of Mines under provisions of Schedule 2C4 issues approvals covering complete operating units such as loading machines, room hoists, and storage-battery locomotives. Certain manufacturers design and build entire machines. Other manufacturers purchase a part or all of the electrical accessories from manufacturers of electrical equipment and make up permissible units by assembling them. Before the assembler purchases electrical accessories for use in such contemplated units he may require certain information from the accessory manufacturer as to whether the particular accessories are suitable for assembly in his proposed permissible outfit. To aid accessory manufacturers in marketing their product, a provision was incorporated in Schedule 20 whereby tests might be made on individual accessories and reports rendered as to the suitability of a given accessory for use in permissible assemblies.

"The underlying principle of the storage battery was discovered within the memory of many still living, hence storage-battery locomotives, which were made possible by this discovery, represent a still more recent development. The Journal of the Franklin Institute for December, 1883, gives an account of the building of an electrical omnibus by The Electrical Storage Battery Co., of Millwall, London, This, if not the first, was among the first attempts to, use the storage battery as the source of energy for locomotion.During the period 1888 to 1893 occasional attempts were made to apply this idea practically, but not much was achieved along useful lines.. The progress during the next, 15 years was slow, and little success was achieved. Therefore, the last two decades may be considered the successful development period of the storage-battery locomotive.In coal mining, the application of the storage-battery locomotive is chiefly in gathering service in competition with animal or cable-reel locomotives. The locomotive delivers empty cars to the rooms or working places where the coal is being mined and hauls the loaded cars from the rooms. The length of haul depends upon the distance of, the junction point from the active workings of the mine. As a rule the haulage from the junction point to the foot of the shaft or bottom of the slope is done by trolley locomotives, but in some instances where the grades permit this main-line haulage work it: performed by storage-battery locomotives.As the place storage-battery locomotives occupy with respect to safe haulage in gassy mines appears to be misunderstood, it is the purpose of this paper to clarify this point.Those who originally designed storage-battery locomotives had no thought of safety in mind and it is just as well that they did not, as these early types of storage-battery locomotives with open controller open motor, open rheostats, flimsy headlights, and crude wiring were very dangerous electrically and not at' all suitable for use in a gassy mine. These locomotives, however, were placed in mines in which open lights were permitted and they replaced considerable animal haulage. Later they were gradually introduced in mines where closed lights were used, but in most cases these mines were not extremely gassy."

Coal analyses help to describe the character of coal as it lies in the ground of as it may he delivered to the user Analyses of samples of coal collected from the face of the bed in mines are plentiful, but available analyses of delivered coal are relatively few, and there is a distinct difference between "mine samples" and "delivered samples.” Mine samples are collected actor drag to a standard method. 13 The sampler cuts a channel. 2 by 6 or 3 by 4 inches from roof to, floor in the face of the bed, and excludes from the sample all partings more than 3/8 inch thick, and any lenses or concretions of sulphur or other impurities more than 2 inches in maximum diameter and 2 inch thick. Analyses of mine samples form a permanent and scientific record of the coal bed at the point sampled, they ale important in determining the character of the coal in any given mine or district These analyses, when the samples are taken by a standard method, are valuable to the operator When compared with analyses of delivered coal they show him whether his mine is being worked efficiently or whether the coal is being properly prepared, which involves the ques¬tion ii Nether he has suitable mechanical appliances for separating the impurities sties. In the purchase of coal, mine samples may serve as a sufficient guide for the experienced buyer who has knowledge of the impurities in the bed, and the degree to which these are eliminated in mining and preparing the coal To the average purchaser, however, unacquainted with these details, dependence on mine samples may be misleading The quality of coal indicated by the base samples call rarely, if ever, be attained in the delivered coal Certain impurities that are eliminated from the formally prepared mine sample may not be eliminated by the miner Some of the roof and floor may also be included if these are soft or flaky When coal prices are high and competition is lessened it is easy for the miner and the management to lower the standards of preparation, and a return to rigid stand¬ards is always difficult. Objective A cable bolt can be a strain-measuring device as well as a supporting device in underground mines. Placing instruments on a cable bolt allows certain characteristics of a rock mass, such as high strain and load, to he evaluated during mining and provides a means for mining engineers and mine inspectors to forecast a potential roof fall. Background Thousands of cable bolts are installed in U.S. mines each year. Studies performed by NIOSH researchers show that support loads can exceed the yield point of the steel, which can result in unstable ground conditions that pose direct safety hazards for underground workers. Rock falls can also create secondary hazards, such as caved escape ways and blocked ventilation passages. Development of methods and tools to assist in the evaluation and selection of rock supports could reduce the number of unplanned rock falls significantly. Approach Instrumented cable bolts developed at NIOSH’s Spokane Research Laboratory were used along with existing ground control systems to monitor rock mass loads and movement Axial and shear loads on the cables are determined as these loads are transferred to strain gages embedded in the king wire. In longwall, room-and-pillar, or underhand cut-and-fill mines, rock mass loads and movements can be detected down to microstrains of stress or millimeters of movement. By detecting such small amounts of ground movement and support load, early intervention to prevent a roof fall is possible, and miner safety and health are increased. How it Works Up to 10 strain gages are embedded in the king wire at whatever locations a mine ground control engineer may specify. The gages m either be set in pairs in the same plane to detect shear or set at 90° angles to detect loading in three dimensions. The cables are up to 5 meters long if they arc to be grouted with resin or up to 15 meters: if they will be grouted with cement. They arc capable of holding m ultimate lend of 214 kN and produce reliable readings to 178 kN, as shown in the calibration curve. The cables are fitted with an instrument plug for monitoring the gages and a special head for insertion into the rock. A data acquisition system, such as a Vishay strain indicator box, Campbell Scientific, or Omnidata system, is required to obtain the data for load and displacement calculations.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the integrity of the existing shutoff valves and actuators used under high-temperature conditions in the Bureau of Mines' horizontal borehole methane drainage pipe- line system and to determine the potential for improvement in the system. In the field tests, both fire-safe ball valves and standard brass ball valves were initially subjected to a 30-min pan fire without thermal protection. Neither valve could maintain line pressure beyond 11 min in a fire that reached temperatures between 500° and 700° C. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the brass ball valve used in the Bureau's methane drainage pipeline system can be retrofitted with an inexpensive "fire bag" to substantially increase its integrity under mine fire conditions.

To enable the mining industry to be kept informed as to the availability of equipment developed by mining equipment manufacturers in their constant endeavor to keep a step ahead of changes in mining techniques, the Bureau of Mines periodically issues lists of equipment approved subsequent to the last previous listing. The present list covers those approvals issued during calendar years 1953 and 1954. It supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953. The procedure established in Bulletin 543 of numbering items in each category consecutively to indicate the chronological order of the approvals has been continued in this circular. Information on approvals issued later than January 1, 1955 may be obtained by referring to Coal Age, a monthly magazine issued by the McGraw-Hill Publishing Co.

PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer's stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.

HELIUM shipments in 1963 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 14th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines plants were 627.3 million cubic feet, an increase of 5 percent over the volume shipped in 1962. Production from Bureau of Mines plants totaled 774.2 million cubic feet. The Bureau purchased 1,420 million cubic feet of helium in the helium conservation program and stored it underground for future use. Each of the five plants, financed and built by private industry for helium conservation, made deliveries during the year. Helium continued to playa key role in space, atomic energy, defense, and other research programs. Additional capacity for liquefying helium became available, and the first civilian helium-cooled nuclear-powered reactor in the United States began pre-operation testing.

Develop methods to detect and repair poorly functioning dust collectors on roof bolters. Approach In conjunction with a research project to reduce silica dust in coal mines, a variety of roof bolting machines operating under different conditions were examined to find out how much these machines were contributing to the silica dust problem. Results The investigation concluded that if the bolting machines' dust collector is properly maintained, very little dust can be measured in the air, even with minimal airflow over the bolter. Poor maintenance, however, frequently results in high dust levels. Three major problem areas were found. These were: (1) filter leaks, which allowed dust to escape, (2) accumulations of dust in the collection system, and (3) low airflow at the bit due to hose, fitting, and relief valve leaks.

The object of this program was to design and build a self-contained system for remote monitoring of the atmosphere in mines. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line as the primary communication channel and also has the capability of using 208 Hz in the ELF band for wireless transmission through the earth. The depth for through-the-earth trans- mission is expected to be about 80 to 90 meters in high conductivity soil and is limited by the noise level in the ELF band-pass filters. The underground components of the TEM System are energized by mine power through a battery charger - storage battery power supply. In the event of mine power failure the battery capacity is more than sufficient for one week's operation with interrogations every four hours.

The Bureau of fines has tested a portable microseismic processor recorder at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, both in an environmentally controlled enclosure and, with minimal protection, in a working area of the mine. In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.
