As a part of it investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explocibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmospheres may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that report enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust ran, uses present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.

The objectives of this research were to determine the practicability of using cobalt as a means of controlling the amount of ferrite in the micro-structures of semiaustenitic stainless steels, and to determine the effects of reduced ferrite content on mechanical properties of these steels. Cobalt additions of up to 3 weight-percent were made to type 17-7 PH2 (AISI 631) stainless steel. Ferrite contents were determined for alloys in the aged condition, and for alloys quenched from the hot working temperature. Ferrite can be completely eliminated from the microstructure of 17-7 PH stainless steel by additions of cobalt, but complete elimination of the ferrite phase results in lower tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Tensile properties, hardness, and impact strength were determined for aged material. A subzero temperature treatment before heattreating was necessary to obtain maximum strength in the alloys containing cobalt. Addition of 2 weight-percent cobalt enhances mechanical properties of 17-7 PH stainless steel.

The development of systems for location of miners who have become entrapped following a mine disaster has been one of the major research goals in the Bureau of Mines. This study details the preliminary development of such a system. Current technologies for locating trapped miners from the surface are either simple direction finders or time difference pulse systems that have accuracy limitations. Developing technologies using full vector field measurements at several receiving points are currently being studied. The necessity of measuring field strength with great accuracy can be a drawback in these systems. A system that operates with continuous wave radio signals, whose phase differences can be measured accurately even in weak signal conditions, greatly improves the location accuracy. A microcomputer would be used in conjunction with the system, to gather and manipulate the data to automatically pinpoint the location of the trapped miner. Comparison of this system with existing technology indicates a favorable accuracy/complexity ratio for the phase difference of arrival technique.

The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .

During recent years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive investigation of the materials for making iron and steel. This work includes iron ore concentration, agglomeration, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates, the production of pure manganese, chromium, and cobalt by electrolytic processes, the production of ferroalloys from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of special alloys to utilize these products. As a part of this general program, a Congressional appropriation allowed the con¬struction of an electric-furnace, semicommercial, ingot-producing plant at Shasta Dam near Redding, Calif. The primary objectives of the pilot plant were to determine the costs and operating problems involved in the production of steel and ferrous alloys in which sponge iron was used as melting stock, and to determine the physical properties of the materials produced. The pilot-plant equipment and the results of sponge iron-melting tests in the basic lined, electric arc furnace have been reported in previous publications.3/4/

The mining law of May 16, 1884, is still the basic mining legislation in Smeden. To satisfy a demand for a revision of the entire mining law, special commissions have been at work for a number of years; but present indications are that the work will require several more years for its completion. The changes contemplated would affect mainly the relations between the nine operator and the landemer, as the present law, according to general opinion, tends unduly to jeopardize the landowner's right in favor of the miner. The socialist party desires additional changes, especially in the direction of giving more direct control of the industry to the State, a control that it now seems to exercise through individual agreements with mining companies. Its control of the Lapland iron mines comes through its sharing the ownership with the Luossavaara-iirunavaara Altb. In this instance, the Government should be Considered as a private commercial body, since the agreement with the company

Vermiculite deposits on the. Platt ranch, 12 miles southeast of Encampment Carbon County, Wyo., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines early in 1949. Major activity was centered on property held under lease by the Mikolite Mining & Development Co. (figs. 1 and 2). Vermiculite occurs in masses and lenses of varying size and as disseminations in altered hornblende diorite. Alteration of the host rock probably resulted from the proximity of dikes and irregular masses of pegmatite. Investigation of the Mikolite property consisted of surface trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling. Four trenches totaling 5,401 linear feet were excavated with a bulldozer and Diesel power shovel. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 600 feet were drilled from the surface to determine the character of mineralization at depth. Eighty-one bulk samples were obtained from the trenches, and 130 sludge samples were collected from the drill holes. Samples were analyzed, and ore-dressing tests were made in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City.

High-pressure, high-temperature hydrogenation of coal has been known and practiced for many years. A full' understanding of the mechanism in this process by which coal is converted to oil and gas must rest on a critical interpretation of the manner in which external variables influence the rate and the course of the coal-hydrogenation reactions. Same Bureau of Mines studies on the effect of temperature, catalyst, and rank of coal on these reactions have been published. The effect of pressure was not studied in this earlier work, and the effect of reaction time was complicated by the interruption of long reaction periods in order to refill the autoclave with hydrogen. It is the purpose of this paper to present data from more recent autoclave experiments that extend the results of Storch, et al, on the kinetics of coal hydrogenation. These data must be explained by any comprehensive theory of coal hydrogenation; their detailed evaluation, however, will be deferred until a later publication.

Mullite is a substance of prime importance in ceramic technology . Despite this fact , its thermodynamic properties have received little attention . A Bureau of Mines literature survey disclosed the absence of lowtemperature heat capacity data , the absence of an experimental entropy value for 298.15 ° K , and the lack of heat content data beyond the temperature range from 298° to 576 ° K. Data supplied in this Bureau report fill these gaps in the thermodynamic knowledge of mullite . According to equilibrium phase studies of Aramaki and Roy ,3 the mullite phase melts congruently at 2,123 ± 15 ° K , and the equilibrium crystallinephase composition extends from Al Si2013 to Al6.8 Si₂ Q4.2 . The results in this report are for the stoichiometric composition , Al Si¿Qз . • Heat capacity measurements were made over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K , and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated . An economical, remotely operated (automated), temporary roof support (ATRS) has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for use on a single, fixed-head roof-bolting machine (squirmer) that operates in low coal seams (less than 42 in thick). The ATRS eliminates the need for squirmer operators and helpers to go under unsupported roof to set or remove temporary support prior to or during the roof-bolting cycle--a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 pct of all roof fall fatalities. The ATRS can be adapted to any squirmer used in the U.S. low coal fields. A prototype ATRS was field-tested at Imperial Colliery Co.?s Mine No. 20 in Eskdale, W. Va. The Mine No. 20 amended roof- control plan, which requires the use of the Bureau?s ATRS as temporary support during face bolting, has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor.

"INTRODUCTION An extensive test program is in progress by the Bureau of Mines to determine ways and means of recovering ferromanganese-grade ore 6/ from the wide-spread domestic manganese and manganiforous iron deposits. Samples for testing were received from the Interstate Manganese Co. in northeastern Tennessee, 11 miles west of Mountain City and 10 miles southwest of Damascus Va. The ore deposit occurs in the residual material of the Shady dolomite 7/ as an unconsolidated mixture of hard and soft manganese oxides and clay.Numerous tunnels and pits have developed a large reserve of ore in an area of about 15 acres. One pit 250 by 50 by 20 feet is being mined by rower shovels. The ore is hauled to a washing plant for log-washing, hand-sorting, and jigging. Coarse concentrates from the washing plant are marketed without further beneficiation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. F. This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. The Chestatee mine is one of several well known pyrite deposits in Georgia that are reputed to carry appreciable quantities of copper with the ore. The deposit is? in Lumpkin County on the Chestatee River, 6 miles northeast of Dahlonega (fig. 1). Old records and reports indicated the probable existence of an extensive unmined ore body, but the mine is inaccessible at present. The Bureau of Mines, after studying old maps and records, decided to cor8-drill along the strike of the lense beyond the limits of the indicated old workings in an attempt to extend the possible reserves. The advantageous location of the property indicates that it could become an economic source of pyrite to be used for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Iron sinter resulting from the roasting of the ores could be sold at a premium in the Birmingham, Ala., area, and the copper content could be extracted to help replace the nation's depleted resources of this metal.

The Townsite mine, consisting of 40 acres in the town of Cardin, Okla., is in the center of a highly productive part of the Picher-Cardin district of the Tri-State zinc and lead field. Previous to the time of the work done by the Bureau of Mines, the property had been partly explored by churn drilling, and an area-of about 8 acres in the southwestern corner had been exploited by underground workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation had as its object the more intensive development of the northern part of the property where previous drilling had indicated a possible ore deposit of commercial grade. Churn drilling by the Bureau began in September 1942 and continued to February 1943. Twenty holes totaling 4,827 feet of bore were completed. Utilizing the information gained from these drill holes, the Weidman Mining Co., lessee of the tract, sank a shaft and proceeded to the exploitation of the indicated ore bodies.

The bright annealing of copper is an industrial practice of considerable importance. In connection with this process, equilibrium concentrations of carbon monoxide and dioxide, which may exist in contact with copper and cuprous oxide at elevated temperatures, are of interest. Data obtained at the Pacific Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines enable estimates of these equilibrium concentrations to be made in two independent ways. Although the publication of final data on one method can not take place until certain further experimental work is accomplished, repeated requests which the Bureau of Minus has had for data relative to the annealing and deoxidation of copper justify the present preliminary report. This paper deals with the calculation of gas concentrations in the reduction of cuprous oxide, using more scientific data which will be published later, and refers especially to those conditions of temperature and concentration of practical implication, and from which critical limits ensue.

It is thought that a brief description of the unique mining and milling procedure at the Doyle nine may be interesting to those engaged in small-scale operations at old mines or in working new ore body adjacent to old workings. It also shows what can be done with r. small capital outlay in working a zinc-lead mine on a small scale; as the operation herein described was begun 3 years ago with four men and it now employs 17 men. The original idea was to mine out any ore left around the edges of some old stones above the water level and to rob pillars after an old stope became filled with waste and tailings. This has been done, and the procedure is still being followed; at the same time a paying lead is being mined toward an area in which churn-drill holes have shown ore. Also, preparations are now being made to do some pumping.

Thermodynamic properties of metal halides and, in particular, vapor pressures have become of great importance in recent years owing to increased application of chemical processing to extraction of metals from their ores. Vapor pressure data serve not only as a valuable source of latent heat of vaporization and fusion values but also differences in metal-halide vapor pressures often provide the basis for their separation by conventional mass transfer operations. This literature search was made to provide a ready reference to experimental vapor-pressure data of metal halides and oxyhalides. Results are reported in two main sections: (1) A tabulation of vapor- pressure references for each of the metal halides (listed by metal) for which actual experimental data are reported (table 1), and (2) a bibliography of the citations. Metal halides and oxyhalides are listed by chemical formula and chemical name, based on the stock4 system. To facilitate location of the references, a listing of the journal titles and their abbreviations follows the bibliography.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation, and the U.S. Geological Survey did a geological appraisal of an east portion of the Bear-Marshall-Scapegoat-Swan (BMSS) RARE II area (No. A1485) to provide mineral resource information for land use planning. The Bureau of Mines' investigation consisted of a library and field search for all mineral properties and occurrences, and included a review of Teton County mining claim records. Those records showed two placer claims, the only mining-related activity known in the area. Six reconnaissance pan samples were taken in the vicinity of the two placer claims, the Lone Star and Spotted Horse, located on Hannan Gulch in 1900 and 1901. One sample contained a trace of gold, but there are no identified resources. However, the study area is in the Rocky Mountain Overthrust Belt, which is productive for oil and gas elsewhere. The entire study area is blanketed by oil and gas leases and is currently being explored.

U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation; identified no mineral resources or evidence of mining activity in the Sheep Divide RARE II area. A deposit 10 mi (16 km) southwest of the area contains copper and silver minerals in the Triassic Wild Sheep Creek Formation which probably underlies basalt lava flows covering the study area. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate, but suitable deposits closer to markets are widely available No sand, gravel, coal, oil, gas, or geothermal resource, were Identified. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Sheep Divide RARE II area [10 mi (16 km) west of the Snake River] encompasses 7,100 acres (2,800 ha) of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Enterprise, Oregon, is located 23 air mi (37 (m) west of the area. Peripheral access is provided by the highway from Joseph to the community of Imnaha, Oregon, then south to the study area by the graveled Upper Imnaha Road (fig. 1).
