Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. Physiol. 256 (Cell Physiol. 25): C405-C412, 1989.-A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared with experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The 02 was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH,) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: 1 ) the production of extracellular 02 from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, 2) the subsequent dismutation of 02 to form H,O,, and 3) the reaction of 02 and NBT to form diformazan. NBT specificity for 02 was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) that catalyzes the dismutation of 02 to H,O,. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations because NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 mo! wt) compared with SOD (34,000 mol wt). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/ or electrostatic effects, since SOD is also negatively charged, whereas NBT is positively charged.PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria. This process is accompanied by the production of superoxide anion (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane (3, 31). Superoxide readily dismutates to form H20 2 and subsequently, other oxygen metabolites which have been shown to be both antibacterial and cytotoxic (21, 25, 35).Superoxide is produced from the reduction of extracellular O, at the surface of the cell membrane by NADPH oxidase by the following reaction (3, 4)"

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40° F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1125% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34" C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0° F(-18° C)with 50/50. Reference detonation velocity tests were conducted in 1.4" (3.6 cm) diameter steel pipe at 70°F (21°C) on No. 1 diesel ANFO (94-6), giving an average value of 9722 ft/s (2964 m/s). Comparison tests showed good ANFO performance at low temperatures. Blended fuel ANFO (75% No. 1/25% RO) mixed, loaded, and tested at -40°F (-40°C), produced an average velocity of 9247 Ws (281 8 m/s). A 50/50 blend gave a velocity of 8083 Ws (2464 ds) at -20°F (-29°C). Based on these results, a practical field method has been developed to help evaluate whether a specific oil blend will mix properly with AN at a low ambient temperature. This method will help to promote the safe and reliable use of RO ANFO at low temperatures, with adequate performance.

A specially recommended cable is a rubber-sheathed cable that has met the minimum performance requirements for cables as set forth in Schedule 20. The first in the series of recommended cables was listed September, 1930, by an ad- vance notice published as Information Circular 6375 which described the conditions under which the cable tests were made. Since that time six additional cables have met the test re- quirements and have been specially recommended. The cables were tested under conditions designed to show their approximate perform- ance under mine conditions. Only twin-type cables have met these test conditions. Although the recommended trailing cables are much better and safer for mine use than other cables and withstand being run over by a 7-ton car, they should not be considered as 100 per cent safe. The 7-ton car test represents the minimum limit requirement effective at present under Schedule 2-C, but the test car operates on a straight and level track, and thus does not represent the more severe conditions of mine use such as might result from uneven and curved tracks.

Exploratory research was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of recovering beryllium from Spor Mountain, Utah, ore by the sodium fluosilicate (Na2SiF6) method used industrially for processing beryl. Na2SiF6 requirements to form water-soluble salts of beryllium were determined for three different samples--two clayey ores containing 0.6 and 1.3 pct BeO, respectively, and a calcareous ore containing 0.6 pct BeO. The ores were sintered with Na2SiF6 at 750° C for 3 hours. About 80 pct of the beryllium was rendered water soluble by sintering the 0.6-pct BeO ores with 30 and 40 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO contained in clayey and calcareous ores, respectively. The higher grade 1.3-pct BeO clayey ore required only 20 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO to solubilize over 80 pet of the beryllium. As the 0.6-pct BeO clayey ore was possibly the most representative of the deposit as presently delineated, leach liquor prepared from this sample was treated to recover beryllium salts. About 60 pet of the beryllium contained in the ore was recovered as beryllium hydroxide, which then was calcined to yield a 99-pct BeO final product by means of the following operations: (1) Sintering with Na2SiF2, (2) leaching with water, (3) precipitating crude Be(OH)2 by adding NaOH, (4) filtering to separate the hydroxide from the NaF solution, (5) redissolving the crude Be(OH)2 in excess NaOH, (6) filtering to reject caustic-insoluble impurities, and finally (7) boiling the Na2BeO2 filtrate from (8) to precipitate pure Be(OH)2. Reagent consumption was 49 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO recovered and 17 lb NaOH per lb BeO.

Desulfurization experiments at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville on virgin light distillates obtained from some ‘high-sulfur’ crude oils have shown that the octane numbers of the original distillates are increased on the average about one unit, that the octane numbers of distillates with 4 ml. tetraethyl lead are increased 2 to 3 units, and that the The Petroleum Experiment Station, at the request of the Petroleum Administration for War, instigated and has in progress an investigation of crude oils of the United States to determine their possibilities for yielding straight-run distillates suitable for use as base or blending stocks to produce high octane aviation gasoline. One phase of this investigation deals primarily with so-called ‘high-sulfur’ or ‘sour’ crude oils by seeking to determine the effects of sulfur removal upon the virgin distillates prepared from these crude oils. To date, virgin distillates from several ‘high-sulfur’ crude oils from Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have been prepared and desulfurized in pilot-plant distillation and desulfurization units at the Petroleum Experiment Station. The properties of the undesulfurized and desulfurized distillates were determined and compared to show the effect of sulfur removal. Results of these investigations showing the suitability of these crude oils as sources of virgin naphtha aviation base stocks have been prepared and forwarded to the Petroleum Administration for War and other approved persons. The following preliminary summary is presented to acquaint those interested not only with the present results of the investigation of several ‘high-sulfur’ Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma crude oils, but also to give some basic information as to certain sulfur compounds, especially their identification in straight-run distillates, their depressing effects upon the octane numbers of leaded fuels, the benefits obtained by their partial and complete removal, and some of the processes being used to effect their removal.

Purpose The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator is a software training and communication tool for promoting hearing loss prevention. It allows a user or trainer to demonstrate the effects of noise exposure on hearing without experiencing an actual noise-induced hearing loss. Estimates of the effects of different levels of noise exposure are based on the American National Standard Determination of Occupational Noise Exposure and Estimation of Noise-Induced Hearing Impairment, otherwise known as ANSI S3.44. This standard specifies the predicted hearing loss for noise-exposed populations of individuals based on risk factors that include gender, age, sound levels (in A-weighted decibels or dBA), and years of exposure. Algorithms specified in the standard were derived from empirical studies of populations that had no exposure to loud noise and other populations that had experienced various levels and durations of noise exposure. This manual explains the major objectives that can be addressed with the simulator and training scenarios that can be applied to real-life, real-worker scenarios. The majority of this guide explains the simulator's functions in detail. Simulator users are encouraged to read this manual while learning how to run the software. [ ] Training Objectives The main objective of the Hearing Loss Simulator is to increase motivation for taking effective hearing prevention action by demonstrating simulated noise-induced hearing losses. [The Simulator can also help teach the following facts about hearing loss. Hearing loss is affected by noise levels. Hearing loss worsens as the noise exposure duration increases. Hearing loss can become permanent. Hearing loss makes it harder to hear what others say. Most hearing loss is not caused by age. Speech is made up of both low and high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise makes it harder to hear high pitch sounds. Hearing loss due to noise has less of an effect on hearing low pitch sounds.]

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protec-tive Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conduct a Long Term Field Evaluation (LTFE) program to evaluate deployed self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs). The objective of the program is to evaluate how well SCSRs endure the under-ground coal mining environment with regard to both physical damage and aging when they are deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714). This report presents ?ndings of the combined eighth and ninth phases of the LTFE. For these phases, over four hundred SCSRs were evaluated. The units tested include the CSE SR-100, Draeger Oxy K-Plus, MSA Life-saver 60, and the OCENCO EBA 6.5. The OCENCO M-20 was evaluated only in Phase 9. Testing was per-formed between December 2000 and April 2004. Results of the evaluation indicate that all SCSRs experience some performance degradation due to the mining environment. Observed degrada-tion varies from elevated levels of carbon dioxide, high breathing resistance, and reduced capacity. Mechanical degradation to the SCSR components included breathing hoses, chemical beds, outer cases and seals. The LTFE tests discussed in this report are different from tests performed for SCSR certi?cation to the requirements of 42 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 84 (42 CFR, Part 84). LTFE tests reported here are conducted to an end point, oxygen depletion, to enable comparison of the duration of new and deployed SCSRs. The method for obtaining deployed SCSRs for this evalua-tion was not a random selection from the deployed population of SCSRs. Although the results of these tests are useful for observing performance of the tested SCSRs, they are not representative of all deployed SCSRs. A new evaluation protocol, with revised sampling strategies, test methods, and reporting procedures, is currently being designed to enhance the generalizability of the results. This program will be implemented following completion of Phase 10 of the current LTFE protocol.

The performance of ten anemometers of several types has been measured at low air speeds. Multiple calibration runs provided sufficient data for measuring random error about the mean calibration curve in addition to the difference between indicated and true speeds. Measurements were also performed of the minimum operating speeds of the anemometers.

A parachute-type stopping intended for changing the course of mine ventilation air during mine emergencies has been designed and tested. Some production uses are also visualized for metal mines. Preliminary tests in the laboratory and underground indicate that the parachute stopping is a workable concept, but further developmental research is required.

Several gold-antimony geochemical anomalies were outlined near Stibnite, Idaho, using the humus sampling technique. Several hundred reconnaissance humus samples were collected and analyzed by a combination fire-assay atomic absorption method. The results partially outlined several gold-antimony anomalies and are very encouraging for further work in this part of Idaho.

An analysis of three 1-1/4-diam manufactured wire ropes of 6x19 classification was done to identify and describe reference conditions of new rope. Reference condition is of value when examining tested or retired ropes. Measurements of strand and rope pitch and of wire and rope diameter confirmed adherence of all ropes to those construction specifications. Mechanical properties of strength and ductility were determined by accepted methods for the ropes and wires from the ropes. Individual wires from one rope failed to meet minimum wire ductility values. Wire chemical composition varied in average carbon levels, from 0.70 to 0.78 wt pct, and in manganese content, from 0.45 to 0.80 wt pct. One manufacturer's product contained 1 to 3 wt pct Ni and Cr. Heavily wrought pearlitic steel microstructures were porous and contained inclusions. Cold work variations were evidenced by wrought grain width. Recorded anomalies reflected the condition of the manu-factured products. The report provides data that compare the three wire ropes studied, but cannot verify the effects that these conditions or anomalies have on rope service life.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Diagnostic: tests were performed on a production ST-5A Load-Haul-Dump machine manufactured by Wagner Mining Machinery Company to evaluate and rank order noise sources. The diagnostic evaluation indicated that the major noise sources were the transmission, the engine, and the cooling fan. This phase was followed by implementation of recommended noise control treatments, which included vibration isolation of the transmission, a transmission enclosure, an engine enclosure, and modifications of the inlet to the cooling fan. The final step in the program was an underground operational period which began on 31 August 1976 at the National Gypsum Mine in Shoals, Indiana. The noise control treatments successfully reduced the LHD operator noise exposure by 7 dB(A), thus increasing its allowable operation time by a factor of 2.7. Actual measurements made underground using noise dosimeters have indicated that, during, a typical shift, the noise control treatments have reduced the fractional exposure to an allowable level. The report discusses the mechanical aspects of the LHD, its noise sources, the treatments applied, the final levels achieved, and field experience with the noise-controlled machine.
