Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

Continuous remote sensing of air speed In underground mine airways. Approach An ultrasonic technique measures a form of air turbulence which is proportional to air velocity. How It Works The stainless-steel enclosed transducer consists of a sensing head with circuitry, and a telemetry card. The sensor uses a patented ultrasonic technique to measure a form of turbulence created In the air. This turbulence, known as vortex shedding, is related to the air speed through the sensor. Air flowing past a cylindrical post creates vortices which flow down the air stream on both sides of the post. Pulses from an ultrasonic transmitter pass through the vortices to a receiver; the effect of the vortices on the pulses is a measure of air velocity. The transducer contains a telemetry card, known as an accessor, which transmits reports on air velocity through a pair of wires to a monitoring system. The accessor contains an analog-to-digital converter and digital telemetry circuitry required for computer system operation. Reduce longwall intake contamination by controlling respirable dust generated by the stage loader. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber on the stage loader immediately outby the crusher. Dusty air from the crusher is drawn through the scrubber and a clean air discharge is delivered into the primary face airflow. How It Works The contamination of intake air is a significant dust control problem often overlooked on many longwall faces. This dust source contributes to the full shift dust exposure of all face personnel, and thus can significantly affect compliance with Federal regulations. Several sources contribute to contamination; however, dust generated by the stage loader crusher is the single largest source. The breaking action of the crusher generates a tremendous quantity of dust, which mixes with the primary ventilation airstream and is carried down the entire length of the longwall face. The installation of a water-powered scrubber (see diagram) has proven effective in controlling crusher-generated dust. The scrubber is mounted immediately outby the crusher. Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

Provide optimum visibility of mining operations while maintaining protection and comfort for machine operators. Approach A cab with hydraulically powered variable-height control was developed and used on a loading machine in underground operations. How It Works The cab is attached to the vehicle on a horizontal trunnion located near the forward end of the cab. A hydraulic cylinder, controlled by the operator from inside the cab, pivots the cab about the trunnion providing variations of up to 16 inches in elevation. The nominal tramming position of the cab is with its underside 6 inches above the mine bottom. From this position the cab can be pivoted up, or down, so that its back end is elevated 10 inches, or lowered to the floor. (See Figure 1.) The cab encloses the operator for protection against both overhead and lateral obstructions, and it raises or lowers, allowing the operator to select the most advantageous cab height. The cab is angled inboard 30 degrees to the machine line of direction. The operator's seat swivels to allow view of the conveyor during loading. All controls are located within the cab and move up and down with it.

A collaborative project between RAG Emerald Mine, NIOSH, and SCT Operations was conducted to investigate ground behaviour, reinforcement performance, and stress redistribution in a coal mine entry subjected to a severe horizontal stress concentration. Field measurements indicated that the stresses applied to the study site nearly doubled during longwall mining, resulting in roof deformations extending to a height of 4.8 m (16 ft) above the entry. This paper focuses on the computer simulation that was undertaken to provide more insight into the roof behaviour and rock bolt interaction during mining. The model’s input rock properties were derived from extensive laboratory testing, and the model itself simulated a broad range of failure mechanisms. The effects of different bolt patterns on roadway behaviour were evaluated. Comparison between the model results and the field measurements indicated that that the model effectively simulated the critical elements of the actual roadway’s behaviour. With the confidence gained, the model was used as a baseline for additional simulations that evaluated the expected performance of alternative roof support systems. The study will also provide a benchmark data set for future applications of numerical modelling to U.S. coal underground mining.

Promote safer and more efficient mine operations by providing communications between personnel located anywhere in the mine. Approach A radio communications system was designed which takes advantage of existing mine wiring such as telephone lines or electric power cables. The existing wiring distributes radio signals throughout the mine, making communications possible between roving miners, vehicle operators, dispatchers, and other personnel. How It Works Research has shown that medium frequency (MF) signals (300 KHZ-3 MHZ) can couple onto and re-radiate from nearby conductors. This effect is known as parasitic coupling and re-radiation. In a mine, these conductors include electric power cables, control lines, telephone lines, trolley lines, as well as metal water and air pipes Since all underground mines require these conductors for normal operations, the necessary network already exists and expands automatically as the mine is developed. A radio communication system has been developed that uses the parasitic coupling and re-radiation characteristic of MF. Using this system, whole mine radio coverage can be achieved without the need to install or maintain communication lines. The system consists of mobile transceivers for roving personnel and vehicles, and fixed-location base radio stations and repeaters.

We present an electromagnetic method taken from the well known radiogoniometer that allows us to locate at the surface of the ground the vertical axis of a magnetic antenna transmitter buried at a depth h in the earth. The method and the equipment achieved are called R. E. P. E. (Relevé Electromagnétique de Points Enterrés). They are daily used to accurately survey old quarries by using triangulation instruments at the surface of the earth rather than in galeries where the setting difficulties considerably reduce their accuracy and increase the work length. The results of several surveys allow us to give the optimum working conditions of the instruments and show that, when the transmitter is at a 20 meters depth, its position is known at the surface with an error lower than 1 centimeter. The power transmitter is of about 8 watts and we can find its location with an error smaller than 1 meter when buried at a depth of about 100 meters. This equipment may be successfully used for location of subsurface miners. The space surrounding the transmitter must then be free from ferromagnetic bodies.

The experiments described herein were made at the request of Committee D-5, on Coal and Coke, American is n Society for Testing Materials, in order to obtain data as to the probable contamination of laboratory samples of coke Then pulverized to pass a No. 63 sieve of tine U. S. Standard Sieve Series2 by methods other than by ball-mills or hard-steel diamond mortars, which methods are specified-in the standard methods of that Society.3 After pulverizing, representative samples were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh for ash content to detect any contamination of the samples by the pulverizing apparatus. Preparation of Core Samples for Tests. Two samples of 48-hour beehive coke (Continental and Leisenring) made from Pittsburgh coal were selected for the tests. These cokes were crushed approximately to No. 10 sieve size, by first passing through a jaw crusher and then through a, roll crusher. The crushed coke was then carefully mixed and riffled into portions of about 800 grams each, and sent to three cooperating laboratories for grinding, through a No. 60 sieve. To a greater or lesser extent, the economies of the smaller Caribbean Island countries continued to have common problems. These included unemployment, inflation, foreign exchange shortages, trade deficits, and unstable world prices for their exports. Declining prices for petroleum provided some relief from scarce foreign exchange. Overall, the mineral sector remained stable. The Amerada Hess Corp. crude oil transshipment terminal on St. Lucia was completed during 1981. However, there were no shipments during the year. No official reason was offered for the delay in opening the terminal, but it may have been related to the world surplus of crude oil that occurred in 1981. There has been no further action on the refinery, which was to complete the island's petroleum complex. During the first half of 1981, an announcement was made that a second oil transshipment terminal would be built on St. Lucia. The report indicated that the terminal was to be financed by Saudi Arabia and include underground storage. After the original announcement, no further information was made available. This terminal, like the Hess petroleum complex, may have been temporarily postponed because of the crude oil surplus.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surface underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material. Extended seismic arrays were used to identify the vibration characteristics within a few tens of feet of the blasts and also as modified by the propagating media at distances over 1 mile. Production blasts and specially fired single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency and the influence of initiation delay timing. Vibration amplitudes from the production blasts at all sites exceeded historical norms, particularly at the greater distances. This contrasts with the near-normal results from single-charge blasts. Apparently, between-hole time delays were insufficient to separate vibrations from adjacent charges for the low-frequency waves present. Single-charge tests showed that the propagating media produced low-frequency, ground-roIl-type surface waves at nearly all sites. Large blasts at such sites could produce an unacceptable risk of vibration-induced cracks in nearby structures.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace, Bruceton, Pa., was operated to determine the feasibility of replacing part of the burden coke requirements with solid fuels injected directly into the smelting zone. This report describes preliminary experiments and information resulting from such an interchange. These experiments were made on an all-sinter burden, using two parts sinter to one part fuel. Anthracite fines were injected intermittently into the smelting zone of the furnace by compressed air through auxiliary tuyeres. The interval between injection periods ranged from 5 to 15 minutes. A maximum of 28 percent of the stock column coke bur-den was replaced. This percentage replacement caused furnace malfunction, but the overall percentage of these experiments indicated that 20 to 24 percent of the coke requirements could be replaced in this way. The metallurgical coke consumption was decreased by as much as 377 pounds (25.3 percent) per ton of pig metal produced. Buckwheat anthracite No.4 was used in this experiment; however, such solids as bituminous coal or coke fines also could be used. The frequency as well as the quantity of solid fuel injected has a direct bearing on furnace performance.

"INTRODUCTION Technically speaking, bauxite is not a definite mineral but a mixture of several minerals belonging to a group of partly consolidated material known as laterite, which have been formed by surface weathering of rocks.The term bauxite is applied to the ore of aluminum, although a substantial amount is used for other purposes, such as a base in certain chemical industries and in the manufacture of artificial abrasives, refractories, and certain cements. "Mica" is a group name for a number of orthosilicates of aluminum with magnesium, ferrous iron, and the alkalies. They are characterized by their high reflection and a basal cleavage so well developed that they can be split into exceedingly thin laminae, which are more or less tough, elastic, and transparent, according to variety. Barium, manganese, lithium, chromium, titanium, boron, and ferric iron occur in same varieties. Eight distinct species of true mica, which appear in the following table, are recognized by mineralogists, but only the first five are of commercial importance. A sorption apparatus for measuring the equilibrium sorption isotherm and the rate of diffusion of methane from fine-sized coal was designed and constructed. Preliminary work that used Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coal shows that the diffusion coefficient varies with pressure and that the fracture spacing in these two coals is substantially different.
